Ok, never a big fan of Reagan but it is refreshing to hear self-deprecating humor. He also NAILED Mondale in that debate....and the "sip of the water" was priceless after.
@oldschoolhunter Actually I'm more conservative than Reagan or any of the neo-cons in office and in media today. Sorry, I'm actually for the states rights, personal liberties, balanced budgets and constitutional levels of federal authority. Basically, the definition of conservative. As a result, I can't get behind Reagan, Bush (or Obama since you mentioned him).
@FiveInchTaint Personally, I don't feel the need to be any more conservative than Reagan. Not that he was perfect, nobody is, but I'm quite sure he embraced the ideals that you listed. (BTW...I don't think you need to be sorry for it either) Obama shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as most presidents or even on the same page as Reagan; He's only good at campaigning for president, not being one.
Amnesty for illegals, massive spending with massive deficits? Yeah, awesome president. You guys need to turn off talk radio. Real conservatism is about less government. Yeah, he's funny and has an excellent delivery, but results determine greatness. He simply didn't deliver.
Pretty easy to pick out negatives from ANY presidency. I have yet to know president who made every living soul happy. In this case, we see you jump on interest rates. Doesn't change the fact he was a great president...and obviously WAY more genuine than anything we see today. To criticize over one thing and ignore all the other great thing just drips with blind party allegiance and ignorance.
I will say Reagan had a great sense of humor. He could make fun of himself. Whether you liked him or not or agreed or didn't agree, he was a very funny man. Obama shouldn't try to be funny. Obama isn't at all.
Great actor and orator for sure. Many posting comments seem to forget about double digit interest rates, recessions in 81-83 (and again in 91-92). But whatever....
@skepticismjoe God bless you, whoever you are. I feel your sadness for this (once having been a great country). I hope Romney will be our next president. He's no Reagan, but at least he will help this country gain some respect and dignity once again. We had enough "change" for the past 4 years.
I'm an Independent political person, and I'm wondering if Reagan really did make the economy flourish. I can see that he was a humble and humorous man, but did his economics work?
well, he turned around the catastrophy known as stagflation that plauged the country during the 70s, and the 80s was a period of strong economic growth followed by the 90s which was another very strong period of growth. Economic policies continue to affect the development even after they are introduced, so the 90s would have been weaker without Reagan.
So the fact is, there were no bad effects afterwards since the 90s were strong, and the period when he governed was a period of strong development to.
So all the empirical data certainly supports the view that regans policies worked. the 80s were strong, and the 90s were even stronger.

@AETutorials42 Yes, at State of the Unions and pretty much every Presidential address to Congress the Vice President and Speaker of the House (Tip O'Neil in this video) sit behind the President.
I agree, he was by far one of the best presidents this nation has ever known. Liking his policies or not, his genuine LOVE for this country and respect for the fellow man ALWAYS shined through.
He built Star Wars but he didn't POWER over Gorbachev, he won his respect and that's what stopped the cold war! We owe a serious gratitude to this exceptionally gifted person who gave his best to the nation he loves. Thanks for the comments Sheppard - he made me proud as well.. :)
Ronald Reagan will forever be remembered as "The Great Communicator". It wasn't his policies or his effectiveness to find the right words, which he ALWAYS did.... It was that boyish smile, and that soft toned delivery followed by an extremely intellectual finesse to cut someone's legs off without them ever feeling a sting. I grew up 5 miles from Mount Rushmore as a child, and I say if there is any rock left, President Reagan should be added. :) God please re-incarnate him, we need him now!! :)
@BONZAII42 "I say if there is any rock left, President Reagan should be added" I would absolutely support such a measure. He was one of our greatest Presidents and I admire him greatly!

I feel sad and miss him greatly.....but also very priveleged that he was my first President that i voted for. I share him with my children every chance possible so that they can experience a true American President. Go to his Presidential Library in Simi Valley, you won't have a dry eye. It is trully inspiring <3
I did volunteer work, my freshman year in college, on his '84 campaign...not that he needed my help or anyone else's. It was a great time in the nation.

I read a story somewhere that said he used to always feed squirles in the front yard of the White House everyday. When he left office, he left a note where the squirles would eat that said, "Warning: The new guy has a dog."
Ronald Reagan stood for everything that's right with America. Boy- did the liberals hate him for that!!!! Great man, we could certainty use someone like him now. Instead we have a guy in the White House who hates America.
If you visit the eastern european countries you will find his picture everywhere, in homes, offices, and bars etc. When i travelled through these countries after the fall of the berlin-wall the freed peoples always mentioned his name with praise and were so greatful that he stood up to the soviet union and ultimately helped greatly to its demise. @whatevr192 a lot of people does, specially farmers in the north and right wing politicians in Nicaragua appreciate and feel admiration for this great men. THANKS TO RONALD REAGAN THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE¡¡¡
The only thing I remember about the Carter administration was eating government cheese all the time. My dad left my mom and I when I was about 5 years old and she had to stand in line for government cheese and peanut butter. The grilled cheese sandwiches were horrid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, seems like happy times are back again:)
Ronald Reagan loved his country, and he was such a great President. I would definitely call him "Mr. President". He is the kind of man we need now, rather than what we have. What a difference!
@safewaysecurity God had the old stream bed for centuries but only produced errant rocks, boulders, and worthless brush. The farmer tackled the old stream bed one year, turned it around, and then produced bountiful crops. Meaning, God produced nothing substantial and the Farmer produced all the healthy vegetables, etc.
A great US president, and, quite surprisingly (well, not so, putting his presidency back in the context of the time), probably the one which most Europeans will remember fondly...
Reagan was a politician his tax and economic policies weren't fantastic. He really did love this country though. You could tell by his words he loved it. Great man.
