You guys in the u.s must be gutted as the euro version has 286hp and 440lb/ft as standard. Just had mine re maped and it's now 350hp and 540lb/ft. Traction is the only issue now, so i,m running it on 285/25 20 rears which does help but i wish bmw would fit lsd's to their m sport models and not just the M versions. The euro cars have slightly different styling too.
Twin-turbo is far more responsive and fuel efficient. It is only as reliable as the engineers who designed them and the materials that were used to make everything.
i am a diesel mechanic and i would say hell yes twins are worth it you get no lag and the power of a big turbo best of both worlds although there are more moving parts the benefits far outweigh the risk
Lamborghini used to make some pretty ugly tractors and even a pickup - so you should probably have a go at them too. And Porsche for the Panamera, and Alfa for the Mito.......
Ethanol is a terrible fuel. Less stored energy than gasoline and WAY less than diesel. Also cuts into corn crops and other food crops. Not a good economic affect on our economy. Also, the diesel revolution is upon us - we will soon see all car companies offer a diesel option like in Europe. Diesel engines always offer better fuel economy, better torque, and much better longevity and reliability than its equivalent gasoline counterpart. with fuel demand low, ethanol is struggling big time!
I talk all people living in United States. Maybe you've never seen even a diesel car in the country. But please try especially diesel bmw's. It's not only saves fuel but also have much more torque which affects the elasticity (acceleration of 60-100km/h 80-120km/h 100-160km/h etc)
@7150285 When you are starting from zero kph, yes gasoline will a bit faster and can reach the maximum speed (for example 250km/h) earlier, but if you start from 80km/h or 120km/h, torque of a car more effective instead of the horsepower. 3.35d has 580N.m torque, 3.35i has 400N.m,
180N.m torque is a great number so 3.35d has a greater acceleration except from starting 0
Please check 3.35d and 3.35i technical details. For ex:
@bekomach another thing that i wanna know is that but diesel pickup truck have extremely fast acceleration even from 0-whatever but not a very high top speed thou......i heard they uses boost launch or something like that??
I don't know about trucks, but, nearly all diesel car or bus or truck has a turbo unit to increase performance.
Diesel has lower top speed because it reaches maximum of 5000-5500rpm but gasoline cars can reach even 8500-9000rpm, if there are two cars with a same gearbox, of course gasoline has a higher top speed, do you understand?
There are several things affecting the performance of motor and the acceleration:
1-HP of engine
2-Torque
3-Gearbox ratio
4-Equipment and all materials used in production
5-ECU, chip tuning etc
6-Sequence of cyiinders ( V, boxer, in-line, wankel)
7-Weight of car
As a matter of fact, prediction of acceleration is not easy, but generally if there are cars with 200HP (one of gas, one of diesel), always diesel has a greater compression ratio, means greater torque, so diesel is good :)
@bekomach i just wanna know one thing is that torque or horsepower is ACTUALLY more important during acceleration cuz i keep ppl hearing that ppl say diesel will be quicker cause it have a greater torque BUT gasoline have much more HP and RPM so idk who or what to believe..........:(( not talking about top speed thou. just acceleration
if you take new 5.30i 272HP with 300N.m torque 0-100is better than 5.30d but acceleration from 60kph, or 80kph or whatever due to 500torque 5.30d is quick ok?
However if you draw torque, HP, RPM curves yes you'll see that gasoline uses their max torque wide range of RPM.
In conclusion, if gasoline has a bit greater HP and the torque difference is not much (smaller than ~100-120N.m) then gasoline generally takes the diesel.
Just try it! I just dropped my old VW Golf R32 (241HP) with a 335d st.car. I think I never will return to gasoline. I know that diesel quality is not the same in the U.S. So it baybe not the exactly the same experience. But try it!
I own one and I love it when i said not in Cal i meant that diesel is cheaper than gas and car can go 600 miles on one tank on highway. LOVE the torque too.
i have a 98 323is. not only will this diesel get equal to or a bit better mpg than my 2.5 six, but it will SPANK me off the line. so im gonna just have to see about a new one.
The 330d and 335d are both 3 liters, but the former is a lower output single turbo, the latter is a twin turbo high output, 170kw and 210kw repectively. The 330d is more economical, and if you want 50 mpg plus, go for the 320d with 110kw, still more torque than a big 6 petrol at takeoff, and a nice cruiser for those not into road racing.
american mpg are different than imperial mpg....and 33 mpg here is good....i think i get about 37 out of a civic.
id buy this engine over the gas....just for the torque...it would be bad ass....otherwise id get a 135...better value for the money....i just hope they dont put a huge premium on the diesel model
I have a 320cd which is 200bhp and i get 54mpg on the highways.
335i gives 23mpg combined.
If you do the math on your fuel costs like i have (being a BMW diesel owner and a former BMW petrol owner) then the saving is roughly £1k per year per 10k miles on fuel alone. This is assuming 15% higher cost for diesel than petrol, as is now the case with a lot of european countries.
The real reason why 67% of BMWs in Europe are diesel powered is because diesel is about 10-15% cheaper than petrol to buy. It's a lot cheaper to run diesel cars in Europe.
I bet the marketing men in the US don't tell US customers that rather inconvenient truth.I believe diesel in the US is around $3.50 for a gallon, compared to $3 for a gallon of petrol, meaning that it won't be that much cheaper to run a diesel in the US, and then there is the extra cost of AdBlue too.
Well we had two problem over here, in the U.S. 1)Crappy high sulfur diesel fuel and 2)The good ole supply and demand game. I'm glad that BMW is bringing their diesels over here as well as VW and Audi ramping up their efforts. It's about to get really interesting over here.
The 335d lost to the 335i in the 2007 International Engine of the Year competition. It came second in the 2.5-3.0 litre category, with the 335i's engine in first place. The 335i also won the overall title and the best new engine in the same competition.
people in America need to wake up about diesel engines....they are the future. Why were gassers ever invented. In my opinion, use gas only for racing events but as far as commuting, diesel should be the norm.
These diesels are amazing. I rode in an X3 w/a diesel engine in Germany. We were driving along, when all of the sudden the light started turning red (in Germany this happens fast).
The Driver floored it, and the earth started moving backwards as the car moved passed the light.
Out government MPG tests in the USA are less forgiving than the European tests, so the same car in America would get less MPG on the sticker than it would in Europe. I don't really think our new efficiency tests are too good. I drive pretty hard and I get better mileage than what the sticker on my car suggested I would be getting. This 335d will most likely get better than 33 MPG.

No, I just know that the US MPG tests changed dramatically for the 2008 model year. Cars that remain unchanged from 2007 are all getting worse mileage on their stickers this year, as a representation of "real-world" driving styles.
Ah but that doesn't necessarily mean the US standards are harsher. We pay a lot more for our engines here in Europe I have a feeling they might be better. You know high gas prices and all localized needs.
I really doubt BMW would put cheap versions of their engines in the cars they send to the US, considering the high volume of cars they sell here and their buyers' fastidious quality expectations. And like I mentioned about my own car, many US drivers have reported getting better mileage than suggested on their new 2008's sticker. So it's got to be the new tests.
Well actualy they do the cars shipped to america do not receive efficent dynamics tecnolgy. Without this the engine suffers slightly more drag when revving and lower fuel econemy. In theory this also reduces the horepower and torque that cars delivered in america receive in comparison to european versions. However this 3.o litre diesel is an excellent engine it uses twin variable geometry turbos and ther for suffers no lag and no reduction at the top end either
Oh thanks. I didn't know that we weren't going to get the efficient dynamics engine. I just figured we would get the same thing. That's really ironic that the USA of all countries, one that wouldn't allow diesel cars in certain states for being "dirty," would not get the more efficient engine. Sounds like hypocrisy to me lol. I wish we could just get the same cars here that Europe has. I really want a Citroën C4, but we don't get ANY Citroëns here at all. :(

Butanol in fact. is 1/4 of the price of gasoline, has much lower emmisions, and brings with it torque and performance increases.
Meaning that it will overtake diesel as well.
