I saw a Mythbusters episode about this and I think they came to the opposite conclusion... they made 2 smaller scale models of the ship and covered one with the same flammable dope. The one covered with the flammable dope burned MUCH more quickly than the other model.
One of the least convincing SFDs. The "explanation" has little or no corroborating data and no recreation or computer simulation. For example, why did the nose catch fire as it was falling...independently of the main fire? Also, hydrogen is explosive...this fire burned fast, but was there a series of explosions as each gasbag burst? How did so many, the majority, survive?
@jabaiol... Because fire burns up, not down! And the nose was on it's way down at that point.
