@sniebow I heard "And Sauron... he's in Mordorrrrr" What language are they supposed to be singing anyway? They're awfully good baritones to be Orcs haha
Well i'll say this much, its better than masticating over a bowl of blue cheese and raw shiitake mushrooms with a side order of boiled chittlins...levity
I love this movie, lol. They did such a great job for an animated 70s movie. I see some parts where the animation is integrated with real filming, it's pretty great. I love the movement in this animation, too. I'm just saying, for what it is, it's pretty accurate and well done.
So Friggin Classic!!!! Haters have NO CLUE! This was Cutting Edge in 78. And the director was working against a studio that gave no support, financial or otherwise.
The real reason why Jacksons films were so great was because New Line was behind him 110%. investing almost $300,000,000 in the process. THEY allowed his vision to come forth.
Bakshi was working with a fraction of that budget with an impossible studio and I think still pulled off an incredible vision of Muddle Earth.
@joeylodes Bullcrap. Jackson made a terrific interpretation of the LOTR, having a good budget does not automatically mean a successful film. Look at Cutthroat Island, or Eragon.
Bakshi did probably not read the book, why else would he call Saruman "Aruman" or dress Boromir in a Barbarian garb when Sean Bean's portrayal is far more accurate? This film had potential in its story and actors (John Hurt), but Bakshi wrecked it.
well in the original book it is kind of how sam is portrayed ... for example when sleeping at tom bombadils house frodo, merry and pippin all have their dreams mentioned while tolkien says that sams mind was empty and he slept like a log. i guess for the movie its more effective to have the brave loyal sam rather than the comical servant sam
There sure are a lot of people who think this a horrible adaption and laugh at it. The poor CGI generation born after 1996....this is all we had for decades and they did a good job for the times. They just ran out of time and money to finish it. You got to admit it's pretty impressive when those orcs start singing as they march....today we get a Conan remake that looks like an episode of Xena...now THAT'S a laugh.
One question, which has sort of bothered me ever since I first saw this film as a kid: why do these vikings stand in the open as arrows rain on them? They deliberately stand completely exposed and motionless. Oh and watch out for the orc who impales himself on a spear. He literally throws himself on the spear.
People who knock this movie gotta understand that it was 1978 and this was pretty cutting edge for American animation. They gave Ralph Bakshi a couple of million dollars and let him run with it. Really beautiful and ugly at the same time. The flight to the ford is probably the best sequence in the film.
The Chanting orcs in this version are sooooo much more fucking creepy than the jackson ones, but i think the jackson ones are much better fitted to live action and mainstream audiences than purests of the books. In fact, that can be said for a lot of this movie: more atmosphereic and scarythan the news ones, almost like if they tried to make this lord if the rings if it was a horror series, cause while mabye not as epic as the ews ones, there is some freaky and frightening shit in this one
WTF??Goolum is fecking retarded pervert!..First he shows..em..the "mark"..And then he snoggles with frodos feat..and then he starts to roll around in the dirt...What is this shit?
i prefer jackson's but his version of helms deep is far creepier and more true to the book, i also like how these orcs are more hidden in the darkness rather than obvious grotesque faces and they march singing rather than roaring
This is basically every night in Minecraft for me. I'm doing fine, holding a standing army of zombies, skeletons, and spiders. Then suddenly a random creeper will blast a giant hole in my wall and I end up spending the night in the caves, chased out of my fortress.
The whole problem with this movie can be summed up in two words Money and Budget.
When you see this movie its clear that they had HUGE plans for this movie but the money for the budget needed to make that vision a reality just wasn´t there.
But instead of going down a nudge to make the budget fit, they went with the original plans and the money to make it happen just wasn´t there and it shows.
It would be cool if a fan of this movie decided to finance its completion.
@dutchposer Er....lemme check! *grabs her copy of The Two Towers* Hrm....I guess that's what comes of watching this at about 3:00 am.
I did find a funny thing in the book though, 'Aragorn and Legolas went with Eomer in the van.' Funny, no? Since vans weren't exactly invented in Arda!
I remember when this came out, and to me, a Bakshi fan, this was a huge disappointment, though it does have its great moments. The chanting as the Orcs march into Helms Deep was great, but it's all so muddy looking! I don't like the depiction of Middle Earth: the backgrounds look so dead. I never felt the characters actually existed "there." Also, I don't think Bakshi blocked the battle very well. The guy standing still looking oblivious to all the arrows flying around him was one example.
Assuming of course you sat through the past 11 parts to ridicule on this video, id say something kept you all watching. I love this classic retelling of LotR :)
@Khwaab Yes, ignorant people always ridicule what is not familiar to them. We would have a better world if more people would have a more open mind about things.
If Theo-dan can't beat Arrow-man's orcs, whatever shall we do? Trust in Native american aragorn to make it all better i guess. maybe he'll call up his tribe or something. Yeah epic. the most epic piece of poo ever put to the screen.
I find it odd that with that shower of orcish arrows, a lot of guys got killed, but that one guy at 5:50 manages to avoid getting arrowed several times. XD
@Sisyphus27 They just wrote nonsense lyrics and randomly inserted the words "Isengard" and "Mordor". I'm not shitting you, that is what they really wrote
@40Pacino I don't care, that discordant song almost made the movie for me. The fact that it's just musical enough, but just a little off, and that you almost think you could understand the lyrics. It's like something a twisted subhuman would think is musical. I really got the idea that apocalyptic army was marching into that canyon. I wish Peter Jackson would have added a subtle touch like that.
'SNEAKING?! SNEAKING?! *goes off* 'Hey Smeagol, where you been?" "SNEAKING! HMPH!" i cant tell you how hilarious that part is and how many times i can watch it and laugh! me and my family do this to each other all the time, 'where u been?' SNEAKING!'
The other thing is......Bakshi wanted to include certain Led Zeppelin songs in the soundtrack.....but they didn't let him....how cool would this have been if it had included Kashmir and Ramble On....and The Battle of Evermore.....all clearly referring to LOTR which Robert Plant was a huge fan of.....stupid executive assholes ruined things then...and they continue to ruin things now.....Fuck useless movie executives...they ruin art at every turn...
Like everything that is good in this world......Hollywood executives never let Bakshi finish this.....sonsabitches......I wish they had let him finish it......when I saw this as a child I didn't like it 100%....but now that I'm older....I think it was pretty damn good. Sure there are faults......but still....it's pretty goddamn impressive.....for 1978
So now instead of explosives, it's magical lightning fireworks shot all the way from Orthanc? And people still claim this version is truer to the books.
Gollum performance sucks more every frame. Better physical representation than Jackson's, which inexplicably had blue eyes and was white as snow...Rankin and Bass's Gollum was best, although over-sized in the animation.
Nice squeeky horns in the battle lead up. Look the sky is red, now it's blue, now its red! HAHAHHAHHAAA!!!!! Stupid.
It took a lot of people working really hard to make this look so bad. They all must have been immediately reemployed on Red Sonja.
As much as I love this movie like any Lord of the Rings adaptation, that guy getting attacked by the wolves and the ones fighting the orcs outside the walls were complete idiots. What'd they intend to do? Take the whole army by themselves?
okay, y does gollum look like an allien, and he walks almost completely upright. and he sounds soooooooo much more like a pervert then he did in jacksons....and did u see at 1.08 gollum is kissing frodos feet, and then frode just wipes his foot and looks disgusted. also, smeagols disscussions with himself r so much better than in jacksons. he reminds me of some one from family guy.
@gwenstefanis1 Peter Jackson's gollum sucked with his giant bug eyes and pale skin. This version of gollum is closer to the book. You probably never even read the LOTR. Your generation should read the book then you would understand why so many like this version over Peter Jackson's Hollywood version.
i have decided not to have an opinion on this… there so much good…. and so much bad to this movie.

Take the whole army by themselves?
balrog13571 1 year ago
Wow, they both follow the book quite closely, but man, Jackson basicly copied the movie lol

okay, y does gollum look like an allien, and he walks almost completely upright. and he sounds soooooooo much more like a pervert then he did in jacksons....and did u see at 1.08 gollum is kissing frodos feet, and then frode just wipes his foot and looks disgusted. also, smeagols disscussions with himself r so much better than in jacksons. he reminds me of some one from family guy.

This is so much better than Peter Jack-asse's version. It's got ATMOSPHERE and SUSPENSE, something Hollywood has long forgotten.

i dont like this gollum near as much as Andy Serkis's. This one is so lame. I'm not even scared

@gwenstefanis1 Peter Jackson's gollum sucked with his giant bug eyes and pale skin. This version of gollum is closer to the book. You probably never even read the LOTR. Your generation should read the book then you would understand why so many like this version over Peter Jackson's Hollywood version.

I think I like this version better in the fact that Haldir don't die... Seeing as he was never at Helms Deep in the first place...
and I think Gollum might be from Liverpool... Sounds like it, at least...

Yeah, this movie is old, but really captures the feeling of Lord of the Rings books and atmosphere.
