  • i have decided not to have an opinion on this… there so much good…. and so much bad to this movie.

  • SNEEEAAAAK

  • This is brilliant, using live-action and animation together. Is there a name for this? Roto-scope comes to mind, but I don't think that's it.

  • @SigEpBlue It is Rotoscoping.

  • On 4:05 what is the song called?

  • 0:37 hahaha gollum's arm movements

  • what is with that fucked up hybrid animation?

  • I think that at the end of the song they are saying "this is mordor"

  • @sniebow I heard "And Sauron... he's in Mordorrrrr" What language are they supposed to be singing anyway? They're awfully good baritones to be Orcs haha

  • I love this movie, lol. They did such a great job for an animated 70s movie. I see some parts where the animation is integrated with real filming, it's pretty great. I love the movement in this animation, too. I'm just saying, for what it is, it's pretty accurate and well done.

  • Sam is such a retard

  • What is wrong whit it ?!

  • Yes, Muddle! :b

  • So Friggin Classic!!!! Haters have NO CLUE! This was Cutting Edge in 78. And the director was working against a studio that gave no support, financial or otherwise.

The real reason why Jacksons films were so great was because New Line was behind him 110%. investing almost $300,000,000 in the process. THEY allowed his vision to come forth.

Bakshi was working with a fraction of that budget with an impossible studio and I think still pulled off an incredible vision of Muddle Earth.

    Joe

  • @joeylodes Finally someone agrees with me!

  • @joeylodes Bullcrap. Jackson made a terrific interpretation of the LOTR, having a good budget does not automatically mean a successful film. Look at Cutthroat Island, or Eragon.

Bakshi did probably not read the book, why else would he call Saruman "Aruman" or dress Boromir in a Barbarian garb when Sean Bean's portrayal is far more accurate? This film had potential in its story and actors (John Hurt), but Bakshi wrecked it.

  • ohhhh gurl!!!!! 1:08

  • 5:42 I dont give a fuck

  • 0:15 pretend to be a rock, pretend to be a rock!!

  • 0:45 gollums hand jive

  • does anyone else think the Rohirrim all look like He Man?

  • @BaronVonKenny

    More like a Gall Force.

  • Smeagol is Afro-American here?

  • nazgul looked like a dinosaur xd

  • It's realistic, that the most unrealistic part of the books = Helms deep is also unrealistic in this movie.

  • I can accept people liking or loving this movie, but find it better that Jacksons? hell no, and I'm a fan of the books.

  • i thionk the animation, voicing and the overall atmosphere in this version! really a shame theydidn't do the rest!

  • @mordacis666

The rest was done, but by a different studio - the same who did the prototype The Hobbit feature.

  • the score is really kick-ass

    especially 7:57 and 9:00

  • Favorite Gimli quote ever!

  • I like it how Gollum throws random tantrums.

  • well in the original book it is kind of how sam is portrayed ... for example when sleeping at tom bombadils house frodo, merry and pippin all have their dreams mentioned while tolkien says that sams mind was empty and he slept like a log. i guess for the movie its more effective to have the brave loyal sam rather than the comical servant sam

  • Why do you think that the theater production gave Samwise more of an image of Valor instead of such a bumbling boob?

  • @ZinfinityX Because the theater version is more true to the story, in that respect at least.

  • the fighting looks so fake

  • There sure are a lot of people who think this a horrible adaption and laugh at it. The poor CGI generation born after 1996....this is all we had for decades and they did a good job for the times. They just ran out of time and money to finish it. You got to admit it's pretty impressive when those orcs start singing as they march....today we get a Conan remake that looks like an episode of Xena...now THAT'S a laugh.

  • aragorn is so weak in this movie ..

  • There is good rock here ! I can eat them and shit bricks :D

  • Somehow I never imagined singing lessons as being central to the training of the Uruk-Hai. Wonder what happened to the guy who had to teach them?

  • @zz13x THIS is what happened to the guy who had to teach the Uruk-hai to sing.

    ht tp://w ww.youtube.com/watch?v=KaqC5FnvAEc

  • @Jonatron101 500 Internal Server Error? That's what I got.

  • @zz13x Mmm, first result for youtube "Trolling Saruman", such a shame that damned link didn't work.

  • @Jonatron101 Ouch! Poor Saruman. He was just vocalizing, and Legolas had to shoot him.

  • One question, which has sort of bothered me ever since I first saw this film as a kid: why do these vikings stand in the open as arrows rain on them? They deliberately stand completely exposed and motionless. Oh and watch out for the orc who impales himself on a spear. He literally throws himself on the spear.

  • Lol the way smeagol moves would seriously be able to be a dance

  • Whatever happend to the elves dammit!!!

  • @magnumhero33

The elves don't come to Helms Deep, Peter Jackson added that to his movie.

If people would read the fucking books, they would know that.

  • @LeannefunkE lol its been a while since I've read the books lol

  • People who knock this movie gotta understand that it was 1978 and this was pretty cutting edge for American animation. They gave Ralph Bakshi a couple of million dollars and let him run with it. Really beautiful and ugly at the same time. The flight to the ford is probably the best sequence in the film.

  • The Chanting orcs in this version are sooooo much more fucking creepy than the jackson ones, but i think the jackson ones are much better fitted to live action and mainstream audiences than purests of the books. In fact, that can be said for a lot of this movie: more atmosphereic and scarythan the news ones, almost like if they tried to make this lord if the rings if it was a horror series, cause while mabye not as epic as the ews ones, there is some freaky and frightening shit in this one

  • there is seriously a storage of pants in middle-earth. ah but the memories this brings back, priceless. And the attention to detail

  • @SeattleWaffle

    *shortage

  • *Trying to get to Mordor as quietly as possible so you dont get noticed*

Gollum: WRRRRRAAAAAAIIITTTHHHSSS!!!!! WRAITHS ON WINGS!!! THE PRESCIOUS IS CALLING TO IT!!!!!

    Yeah nice one Gollum

  • eww Gollum Eat a Sandwich or something

  • WTF??Goolum is fecking retarded pervert!..First he shows..em..the "mark"..And then he snoggles with frodos feat..and then he starts to roll around in the dirt...What is this shit?

  • 7:13 WTF ARE THEY TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH? Bash down a huge stone wall with a wooden ram...?

  • @jhibbitt1 this version sucked

  • @FrogWalrus Then WHY are you watching this?

  • i prefer jackson's but his version of helms deep is far creepier and more true to the book, i also like how these orcs are more hidden in the darkness rather than obvious grotesque faces and they march singing rather than roaring

  • Interesting how Bakshi shot the Battle of the Hornburg in red while Jackson shot it in blue.

  • @RingLupine red works better than blue, in my opinion.

  • This is basically every night in Minecraft for me. I'm doing fine, holding a standing army of zombies, skeletons, and spiders. Then suddenly a random creeper will blast a giant hole in my wall and I end up spending the night in the caves, chased out of my fortress.

  • I love the Orc's war chant.

  • Gollum sounds like a gay crack addict

  • @141target how else do you think he got like that?

  • all i hear in that marching song is isengard can someone tell me what theyre saying?

  • Now whenever someone asks me what I've been up to, I'll just say "Sneakin'! Hmph!" and stick my nose up in the air. xD

  • The wolves of Isengard look pathetic in this version

  • And at 3:26 we've asked before, but who the fuck let the dogs out?

  • Gollum, you'd be able to snatch it off sleeping Frodo if you'd quit talking to yourself & making anxious motions!

  • @cleanhomer LOL I KNOW!

  • lol at Gimli: "there is good rock here!"

they must sling some good crack in the kingdom

  • @slangshotstudios There is good ROCK here!!! Gimli is ready to rock out.

  • @slangshotstudios Me look for rock-rock!

  • hahahah Gollum is the shit in this adaptation

  • Gollum looks like a wierd brain.... xD

  • 2:34 = best shocked dance in the world.

  • Gollum dances like Thom Yorke.

  • @MoorLetoh :-D

  • aragon undies at 9:40

  • SNEAKIN'!

  • Are those magic lights meant to be the gunpowder substance invented by Saruman?

  • Again, I love how gritty this movie is

  • @mrdropkicker1 So much better without constant comic relief. Good to see Gimli not being a clown.

  • is that how it happened in the book? magic bunker-busters?

  • @awinterb Not as I remember it.

  • Gollum: Sneaking! -humpf- XD Total drama queen

  • wheres Gimli in the fight scene?

  • @owenmcgarel 6:25 or so

  • i thought at 8:00 that a giant puppy was eating the pplz on the walls!

  • Gollum sounds like Mr bean

  • Wow. Uruk-hai have nice voices. Who knew?

  • The whole problem with this movie can be summed up in two words Money and Budget.

When you see this movie its clear that they had HUGE plans for this movie but the money for the budget needed to make that vision a reality just wasn´t there.

But instead of going down a nudge to make the budget fit, they went with the original plans and the money to make it happen just wasn´t there and it shows.

It would be cool if a fan of this movie decided to finance its completion.

  • Unless I am very much mistaken, the counting game was in the books, as well as the elves coming. I did like the chant though!

  • @SilvaAdrianiel the counting game was in the books, there weren't any elves at helm's deep, save legolas

  • @dutchposer Er....lemme check! *grabs her copy of The Two Towers* Hrm....I guess that's what comes of watching this at about 3:00 am.

I did find a funny thing in the book though, 'Aragorn and Legolas went with Eomer in the van.' Funny, no? Since vans weren't exactly invented in Arda!

  • @SilvaAdrianiel van is short for vanguard..it means the front division leading the way.

  • @vetamur I know! I'm just saying the way it was worded was funny!

  • Anybody else besides me notice that the orcs were hitting the ram at the wall versus a door at around 7:21ish?

  • Not enough people kiss my feet.

  • is there more carttoons 2 this i rember this from when woz a kid it woz amazing

  • I remember when this came out, and to me, a Bakshi fan, this was a huge disappointment, though it does have its great moments. The chanting as the Orcs march into Helms Deep was great, but it's all so muddy looking! I don't like the depiction of Middle Earth: the backgrounds look so dead. I never felt the characters actually existed "there." Also, I don't think Bakshi blocked the battle very well. The guy standing still looking oblivious to all the arrows flying around him was one example.

  • Assuming of course you sat through the past 11 parts to ridicule on this video, id say something kept you all watching. I love this classic retelling of LotR :)

  • Wow, so many haters here. Wonder why they bother watching if it´s so bad. On top of it, commenting too.

I just love this movie, it´s more true to the books.

  • @Khwaab Yes, ignorant people always ridicule what is not familiar to them. We would have a better world if more people would have a more open mind about things.

  • If Theo-dan can't beat Arrow-man's orcs, whatever shall we do? Trust in Native american aragorn to make it all better i guess. maybe he'll call up his tribe or something. Yeah epic. the most epic piece of poo ever put to the screen.

  • @ashtashaway Yay for engine Aragorn! 8D

  • Devil worshipping gorillas using the exact same horns *cough!* *Cough!* I mean buzzers as every single other character.

  • i love how the orcs are realized!

  • "Hello,Smeagol. Where have you been?"

    "SNEAKIN'!!! HRMF!!"

  • PUPPIES!!!!!!

  • They called in an Artillery strike on Helms Deep! "Come on Sammy! Bring it in at 045.82 danger close"

  • 4:05, looks like Filmation and Mattel got the idea for Skeletor's staff from here. :3

  • How is the footage of the wolf attacking the man between the Helms Deep shots relevant to what's happening in the story?

  • @Sisyphus27

I find it odd that with that shower of orcish arrows, a lot of guys got killed, but that one guy at 5:50 manages to avoid getting arrowed several times. XD

  • What are the Uruk-Hai chanting?

  • @Sisyphus27 They just wrote nonsense lyrics and randomly inserted the words "Isengard" and "Mordor". I'm not shitting you, that is what they really wrote

  • @40Pacino Well in the book, there is this chant by the Uruk-Hai in the Orcish dialect, so I was thinking that might be it.

  • @Sisyphus27 I think I read on imdb that they really just wrote nonsense

  • @40Pacino I don't care, that discordant song almost made the movie for me. The fact that it's just musical enough, but just a little off, and that you almost think you could understand the lyrics. It's like something a twisted subhuman would think is musical. I really got the idea that apocalyptic army was marching into that canyon. I wish Peter Jackson would have added a subtle touch like that.

  • @wentshow

    This. : )

  • @Sisyphus27 That's the official Isengard national anthem.

  • :35 Gollum is truly frightening

  • Metro sexual smeagol... haha

  • The atmosphere of this film is just fantastic! Thank you for uploading this classic.

  • the orcs were pretty good archers to , took out quite a few of the whiteskins there

  • haha, mute 0:35 and put thriller

  • Gollum makes me think of a gargoyle.

  • hahaha the battles scenes are priceless.

  • I don't know about you guys, but I like this middle earth way better. It's Conan/Warhammer edition.

    And please, it's not racist.

  • Was Gimli stoned at 3:25?

  • @40Pacino gimli's gettin all deep and esoteric right before the battle, hehe xD

  • cartoons frodo ftw

  • 7:34 Did somebody open the ark of the covenant?

  • Eowyn looks like a disney witch and Gollum's eyes look like disney bad guy's. The battle of Helm's deep is like the Jackson's movie with Aragorn.

  • Eowyn looks like a disney witch and Gollum's eyes look like disney bad guy's.

  • 'SNEAKING?! SNEAKING?! *goes off* 'Hey Smeagol, where you been?" "SNEAKING! HMPH!" i cant tell you how hilarious that part is and how many times i can watch it and laugh! me and my family do this to each other all the time, 'where u been?' SNEAKING!'

    LOVE it!

  • 5:39-5:54 wtf are they yust standing still when like hundreds of arrows hiting them????

  • The other thing is......Bakshi wanted to include certain Led Zeppelin songs in the soundtrack.....but they didn't let him....how cool would this have been if it had included Kashmir and Ramble On....and The Battle of Evermore.....all clearly referring to LOTR which Robert Plant was a huge fan of.....stupid executive assholes ruined things then...and they continue to ruin things now.....Fuck useless movie executives...they ruin art at every turn...

  • Like everything that is good in this world......Hollywood executives never let Bakshi finish this.....sonsabitches......I wish they had let him finish it......when I saw this as a child I didn't like it 100%....but now that I'm older....I think it was pretty damn good. Sure there are faults......but still....it's pretty goddamn impressive.....for 1978

  • I Love that war chant at 4:05

  • So now instead of explosives, it's magical lightning fireworks shot all the way from Orthanc? And people still claim this version is truer to the books.

  • This reminds me of a punch-up we had after a Motorhead concert in 1980.

  • Gollum performance sucks more every frame. Better physical representation than Jackson's, which inexplicably had blue eyes and was white as snow...Rankin and Bass's Gollum was best, although over-sized in the animation.

Nice squeeky horns in the battle lead up. Look the sky is red, now it's blue, now its red! HAHAHHAHHAAA!!!!! Stupid.

It took a lot of people working really hard to make this look so bad. They all must have been immediately reemployed on Red Sonja.

  • Where have you been?

    Sneaking!

  • wow, even in Middle Earth they have Vuvuzelas! @ 4:00

  • As much as I love this movie like any Lord of the Rings adaptation, that guy getting attacked by the wolves and the ones fighting the orcs outside the walls were complete idiots. What'd they intend to do? Take the whole army by themselves?

  • Wow, they both follow the book quite closely, but man, Jackson basicly copied the movie lol

  • in the 70's... middle ages where so weird... hahaha I like middle ages better now...

  • 8:14 mini skirt race!

  • okay, because of all this red, i cannot even see the battle going on. that it reeeeaaalllllyyy annoying.

  • okay, y does gollum look like an allien, and he walks almost completely upright. and he sounds soooooooo much more like a pervert then he did in jacksons....and did u see at 1.08 gollum is kissing frodos feet, and then frode just wipes his foot and looks disgusted. also, smeagols disscussions with himself r so much better than in jacksons. he reminds me of some one from family guy.

  • This is so much better than Peter Jack-asse's version. It's got ATMOSPHERE and SUSPENSE, something Hollywood has long forgotten.

  • i dont like this gollum near as much as Andy Serkis's. This one is so lame. I'm not even scared

  • @gwenstefanis1 Peter Jackson's gollum sucked with his giant bug eyes and pale skin. This version of gollum is closer to the book. You probably never even read the LOTR. Your generation should read the book then you would understand why so many like this version over Peter Jackson's Hollywood version.

  • I think I like this version better in the fact that Haldir don't die... Seeing as he was never at Helms Deep in the first place...

and I think Gollum might be from Liverpool... Sounds like it, at least...

  • we want´snt we want´s nt :D :D

  • I do like the look of the gollum, but he sounds a bit... weird

  • just love this.. excellent job on the animation.. could sit and watch this all day long.

  • Ouch! Frodo and Sam look like lovers and they SO have Gollum wrong

  • This entire book/movie series is amazing. I wish movies like this were still being made today.

  • No "Youtube, you better not try to get this deleted."

  • Nice but Legolas 7:20

  • Gollum looks even weirder XD

  • Yeah, this movie is old, but really captures the feeling of Lord of the Rings books and atmosphere.

  • so gollums taken too much extacy, dancing the night away and muttering to himself
