  • This was a great TV show

  • Ah, Roeper was alright, at least him and Roger had some good chemistry. The two dorks who followed however, should be shot. A.O Scott and Michael Phillips were pretty good but it was apparent the show had run outa gas.

  • I always thought it would be interesting if Siskel met Roeper.

  • @chevypillow247 Yeah, it wouldQve been something like this: "I never thought seeing a substatute on my chear in this show can be such an amusing expearence." "Well I tried not to wreck the chear, haha...." "But no offence, Richard, you did a terrific job. Thank you." "No, thank you. It was truly an honor." "What about now?" "O, haha,..." "Just to be precise..." "It was an honor, and it stayes that way. How's that?" "Definite thumbs up." "Why thank you very much..."
  • Siskel & Ebert & Roeper

    The triumviratus of Hollywood-critics.

  • @qwuezalothus Uhh, sorry, but Roeper BLEW ASS when it came to his opinions on movies. Couldn't stand the guy.

  • @3TNT3

And I couldn't stand the two Bens. Luckly I never watched there show, but just after seeing there faces and one episode from there so called "reviews", it was asssuck.

  • @qwuezalothus

    ass AND dicksuck

  • I'd quit, too, if I had to look at Ebert

  • I would run from the show too Roeper with ugly sleaze Ebert sitting next to me

  • "I was all wet on the Lord of the Rings"?... Doesn't that sound.... awkward?

  • @cancerfider50 I had said I would leave ugly scarface to his look like fans. But since you engaged me I will answer here. "Troll" is the perfect aka for you as you signed up today just to stalk people. LOL. I LOVE your name "cancer". Maybe you are your hatefilled "critic" should get together and exchange body parts? But nothing can change the fact that your ugly critic and his old movies are over...just like you. Have fun. Whenever ebert uses a dead actors family to get publicity, I'll be back.

  • Ebert was a drunkard for years

  • I love how he is sitting in a slouch 0:39 as he gives his heartfelt farewell.

  • Ebert is a styleless deformed ugly freak who wrote failed screenplays.

  • It was downhill from there

  • To the brain dead losers who need advice on which movie to see: Ebert was a failed smut writer and drunk who now could be in a horror flick without make up. And he looked worse before. Lacking in style, color and taste.

  • @Why don't you try reviewing films for a living? Loser.

  • @sha11235 I don't have to "review" Hollywood films for a living and we all see what a loser you are. I don't seek advice from someone who co wrote the screenplay of "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" (Ebert) before I see a movie...you do. I have my own taste, when I want the opinion of a freak of nature like Ebert (then and now) I will let her know. By the way, Siskel hated Ebert.

  • @Dottiecurran That is baloney. Siskel liked Ebert and vice versa. Maybe at first they had some hostility working for rival newspapers, but they did gain respect for each other.

  • It was sad to see Richard leave and Roger not be there for the final show. The last shot of Richard saying goodbye with Michael watching is just like the last time we saw Roger in 2006.

  • The show died when Siskel died

  • @toaker I'm not sure. I thought maybe the show wouldn't work without Gene, but Richard did save it.

  • Well There is now a show out called "Ebert Presents at the Movies" with two new critics. Roger Ebert is producer of it, and gives his reviews via computer voice, since his voice has been taken from him. The two critics still give "thumbs up/down" reviews and that is what gives the show its golden virtue.

  • goodbye fuckers

  • Richard Roeper is a tool. Ask anyone who's ever met him in Chicago. There's a reason he's still single at his age, and it isn't because he's gay. Now he's ruined the Roe Conn show, which I used to listen to every day. F*cking dislike!!

  • @ChiBoompty wow, your comments make YOU a tool. ''theres a reason why he's still single at his age" ?? hey genius, not everyone sees the value in relationships. you ever think of that? no, because YOU ARE A TOOL :)

  • @quackajack13z, And your point is?

  • @guy2008rules My point is pretty obvious.

  • @quackajack13z Hey you're an asshole. okay that's all.

  • @clutchcityrockets At least I don't subscribe to Ray William Johnson.

  • @quackajack13z oh is that supposed to be an insult. that's badass, my feelings are really hurt

  • @clutchcityrockets They should be. Ray William Johnson is a faggot.

  • @quackajack13z haha

  • I started watching in the early 80's when they aired on PBS. The constructive battles they had was so enjoyable. Real, unscripted arguments that we don't see today.

I don't know if it's still on because I stopped watching when Ebert retired

  • The show was over the day Gene Siskel died.

  • @LordoftheJimmy yeah no one can replace Siskel, not even Ebert either, guess it ok to see this great show end, its about time

  • Ebert & Roeper was the BEST movie review show ever, imo. It was an excellent balance. The Bens were the worst (particularly Lyons). I was OK with A.O and Phillips, but Ebert & Roeper will always be my favorite.

  • i hate how at the movies by ao scott and michael phillips is going 2 end soon.......because of low rating caused by the stupid Bens...

  • I hate Richard he is such a douchebag

  • I don't remember watching this... how the hell did I miss it?!?

  • what was roepers last televised review?

  • now that both roeper and ebert are gone, this show officially sucks.

  • @tvnutboy he was fired? wow. why?

  • @tvnutboy he was fired? wow. why?

  • @tvnutboy he was fired? wow. why?

  • @He wasn't fired. What happened was, Richard's contract was up and he wasn't able to come up to an agreement on a new one, plus Disney wanted to revamp the show and Richard didn't think that would work, so he left and so did Roger, taking the thumbs with him.

  • not the most sincere goodbye i ever heard.

  • I have never liked Roeper much. He is a thoroughly unlikable man who has a lot to learn about movies and art. I would assume he learned a lot from Ebert and hopefully will continue to grow as a critic.

  • Roeper was great!

  • no i love this show, it was a great show. COME BACK TO US MR ROEPER AND MAYBE OCCISIONAL EBERT. I hate the new guys

  • Nothing will ever bear Siskel & Ebert. Nothing

  • what was roepers last review?

  • all wet over Lord of the Rings???...what???..haha

  • Siskel & Ebert kicked ASS!!

Ebert & Guest Hosts was okay

Ebert & Roeper Was pretty cool

Lyons & Mankiewicz SUCKED MONKEY FUCK!

    Phillips & Scott are....decent

  • jesus christ almighty people why dontcha bitch some more

  • obviously no one could replace siskel but i really liked roeper.

  • I liked him, too and I think his good-bye was heartfelt and classy.

  • Amen. Roeper hated most of the movies he reviewed. What a whiney bitch!

  • wow how about someone attack YOU how would you like it

  • @hamleyjeremy

Well he is a film critic, and film critics are supposed to look at these movies from a professional point of view. Just because they don't "recommend" the fim with a "thumbs up" doesn't mean they don't "like the film" or think it is "unwatchable."

  • @hamleyjeremy

For example, you could tell they both wanted to give Jackass a thumbs up, but how do you think that would make them look as film critics?

  • the show is now changed to At The Movies

  • So what happened- they just took the show off the air for good? Or are they handing it over to some other critics?

  • @808Lana After Richard left, Ben Lyons and Ben Manciewicz did the show for a year. It bombed so they brought back Michael Phillips and AO Scott, but it didn't work either.

  • Roeper was an excellent critic.

  • @AllianceCrusha

Do you mean "excellent" in the sense that literally every single thing the supernaturally charisma-free Roeper ever said and did totally sucked and proved beyond question that he knows nothing, has no credible views whatsoever, and should have been washing Ebert's dishes?

  • Phillips is the guy sitting right next to roeper

  • was a shame to see him go, but i found he was always too soft on movies when they were bad.

  • Really? I always thought he was a little too harsh sometimes. He called movies that he thought were bad, trash and garbage all the time.

  • @123rockfan with a book title "YOUR MOVIE SUCKS", yeah, that's harsh, and he didn't have a problem being thought that, I guess :)

wikipedia org wiki Roger_Ebert#Bibliography -- a few others of his books had harsh titles ;)

  • What the hell is Phillips and Scott?

  • The new show, silly. Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott have been the hosts for quite a while now.

  • Honestly I rarely watched either version and have no idea when the heck it's on anyways.

  • Epic critics the best

  • when and why did ebert leave?

  • Several things. Poor health and frustrations with the network. They wanted certain movies to be given positive reviews and ad time even if they sucked quality-wise, and worse, regardless if they made any money long-term so long as they make money when there being pimped on the networks.

  • i hate those shows that just tell you about a movie as if its all one big comercial and I actually care about what it was like working with big shot director Bob blow job, or cindy vapid blonde. i don't care! fuck them all! what i really get a kick out of is the fact that the stars hate doing those interviews just as much as i hate watching them

  • Roeper seemed to be in lockstep with the network's scheme on almost a weekly basis, so I would seriously question whether he quit due to reasons of conscience. He was probably well aware of the war Ebert was raging against Disney-ABC, knew he was pissed about and going to pull out, so he just took the first step knowing his contract wasn't going to be renewed without Ebert next to him.

  • Yeah his leaving kind of left me stunned. Like watching Boondock Saints at the scene where the cat gets shot.

Could his relationship to Ebert have been a cause?

  • I doubt it. They saw eye-to-eye on virtually everything both movie and business related. That was, arguably, the biggest problem with the show once he became co-host. The relationship was too cordial and there was no rivalry.

  • Yeah i agree. I think he looked up to Ebert a little too much, and didn't argue like a peer, but as a fan.

  • @levanyzzuf

Not like the rivalry between gene siskel during the 80s and 90s.

  • I think Roeper did leave out of conscience, for the most part at least. He had a loooot of respect for Ebert and it shows.

  • Actually he left because he didnt like the new direction the show was going.

  • knuckle cancer

  • he cant speak

  • @NegativeNick Ebert became ill in July 2006 after his carotid artery burst after jaw cancer surgery. He was unable to speak, eat, or drink and although he tried reconstructive surgery to restore these things, it didn't work, so he was never able to return to Ebert and Roeper. He does appear on his new show, but only in segments.

  • bravo!

  • I have been watching "at the movies" for 15 years (approxamately) and the sad part is, as soon as Richard Roeper said his goodbyes, the show hasnt recovered. I wish that Disney would do something to bring him back because the show desperately needs him.

  • If ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • it's funny how everybody hated the Bens...I'm sure who ever got the idea of getting 2 young hipper critics for the At the Movies got fired too.

  • A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips were always the best of the new guest critics.....E entertainment my ass....we want the more mature kind of review....i might start watching this again now.

  • A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips will be hosting at the movies, thanks God.

  • Thank God they fired the Ben's.

  • I like Gene Siskel too but the best Movie Critic ever in my point of view is Roger Ebert he is so nice and kind to Kids Movies. In fact Roger Ebert is the Movie Critc who inspired me to become an inspiring Movie Crtic myself.

  • Are you kidding Spider man 3 and alivin and the chipmunks sucked.

  • first of all I wouldn't consider Spiderman 3 a "kids movie"....and i know this is hard to believe....but the majority of kids movies with some awesome exceptions are usually just made for a quick buck with qualty suffering in the process....hell Roger Ebert doesn't always defend kids movies for example he didn't like Monsters vs. Aliens and G-Force....and alot of other ones :/

  • Personally, I perfer Phillips, Roeper and Ebert than the Ben's. I finally caught a clip of the two Ben's and I just changed the channel afterwards.

  • they finally fired the Ben's

  • They announced that A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips will be taking over in September 2009 and the Bens are out of here.

  • YAY! I hate those guys, they gave Madagascar 2 a good review.

  • And Both A.O. and Michael returned to "At the Movies" as they co-host together for the first time. Michael Phillips will co-host the show for the first time since the final "Ebert-&-Roeper-era" episode. Good luck, A.O. and Mike. We'll see you at the movies!

  • It really sucks that Roeper and Phillips left since I started watching At the Movies since I was a kid with Ebert and Roeper. Now, At the Movies is beyond unwatchable! Ben Lyons makes my ears bleed and the new format is beyond cheesy. I heard that Roeper and Ebert might create a new film critic series together, hope it's true, I have my fingers crossed! :)

  • I thought ebert was unable to talk

  • He can't but maybe he's producing the show, I don't know. But it was posted on his blog for months that there would be a new film critique show and he would be apart of it.

  • I could see roeper and philips doin their own show they have good chemistry...despite philips being such a douche bag or i would actually like to see roeper do a show with peter travers of rolling stone. And i think it's a good idea for ebert to produce

  • yeah, id like to see roeper and phillips back. phillips may be a downer and harsh on most movies, but he's very analyical and intelligent, and roeper may be too much of a fanboy sometimes, but hes energetic and has brains as well. and phillips and roeper had good chemistry and were fun to watch.

  • I agree, Roeper, Siskel, Ebert and all the others that have been on the show, were intelligent people. However, the world seems to be embracing 'stupid'. So, stupid is what we get.

  • @lenzino7383 First of all, At the Movies has new hosts now - Phillips and A.O. Scott and while they aren't nearly as good as Gene and Ebert or Roeper and Ebert, they are light years away from those terrible Bens. Second of all, the show just got cancelled and the current season, ending in august, will be the last. Third, Ebert said he is working on a new show. Like you said, keep them fingers crossed.

  • @lenzino7383 Sadly, it won't happen now

  • @lenzino7383 true dat man, true dat, I mean beyond the movies, its shit, but I don't know if the Roeper and Ebert thing is true

  • @highwings89 Apparently Ebert is producing a new show with new hosts. I don't think Roeper is involved but you never know

  • ...or were giving chances to filmakers that they respected where sometime would screw up with one movie. Everything was on the service of Cinema.

That is why I think they should bring in a group of fans of films, sit around a diner table, eat, drink and discuss the weekly flicks and ever go deeper with other conversation about flicks. Of course it would need to be more than 30 minutes.

  • I wish Richard Roeper and Michael Philips would continue the show. Those two are great together. At The Movies has always been great up until now. To be honest, I think Ben Mankiewicz would make an OK guest critic for like once every 10 shows. However, Ben Lyons is just terrible.

  • I never minded these two. Of course I wished Roger would come back, but Phillips and Roeper are good too. At least they have respectable opinions and views on film. Ben Lyons has no idea what the fuck he is talking about! He's like a fucking 6th grader going on about how I am Legend was one of the best movies of all time or how the new GI joe movie lokks awsome. Fuck him.

  • I think Phillips and Roeper were doing a servicable job. They were better than the new guys but they were never interesting. I never liked Roeper. We need ciritics like Siskel & Ebert were, you felt like they were true passionate of Cinema and could talk all day about it. And their technic was less robotic more warm, they would sometime tell the other guy to go f himself. When they were discussing flicks they cared about the evolution of an actor for instance. ...

  • A tragic ending to a great film critique show. I can only imagine how many people were turned off by the new format once the new show aired. I liked Ben Mankiewicz on Turner Classic Movies, but he is not qualified to review new movies. TCM is where he should have stayed, introducing older films from TCM's archives. As for Ben Lyons, I'm really starting to think that man is a living robot, he shows no emotion or scorn for movies, and overall he just seems dull & tedious as a host. What a shame.

  • stop ben lyons before its too late!

  • They need to overall the show again. The two new fools are boring as fuck. I would rather they changed the format completly, maybe even add a few more people and make a table talk show with 5 interesting people talking about movies around diner or beer.

  • I think a format similar to that of the BBC's 'Top Gear" would make for awesome viewing.

  • the new two guys aren't as good. less interesting, less interesting analysis, and less chemistry than roeper or ebert had with any of their guests. i still love the old siskel and ebert. they were the best!!

  • Roeper and Phillips had great chemistry and they were both pretty likeable guys. They should have just resumed the show with these 2 as the permanent critics!

  • @TheWorldisYours21 yeah but I think both are more likeSkeptical critics at heart, likeSiskel, the critics that give the movie structure, the opinons might of been uneven if they continued theshow. There wasn't the caringlike soul critic, role taken byEbert,if they someone at least at least similar,it might of worked.PlusEbert never died.It was kinda weird to seeRoeper take up that caring role,Ebert can be cruel,Roeper could really give it.I think thats one of the reasons why they discontined it

  • i miss these guys the new host are assholes

  • yeah even this version with roeper and phillips wasn't bad but the bens have absolutely no charisma and personality at all! and they give bad reviews to horror movies just cause they're violent and good reviews to almost every kid's animated movie!!!! cancel the show already!!

  • I heard Rumors that Richard Rooper has moved to Hollywood. He might work with Lenard Malton.

  • I liked Roeper (even though I disagreed with him a lot). He had that "average Joe" way about him that made Siskel & Ebert work.

  • Siskel and Ebert as a team were the best at what they did. No doubt about it.

  • I miss this show...it should've been called "Roeper & Phillips" once Ebert couldn't be back on anymore...DAMN YOU DISNEY!!!!

  • God, there's really nothing beautiful or good being made in the world anymore. Everything that was once wonderful seems to be degenerating into lowest-common denominator awfulness.

  • i hear you brother!

  • That statement makes me very sad, because all it shows is that you're not making an effort to look in the right places.

  • Roeper and Phillips were the best thing that happened after Siskel and Ebert left the show. They really knew how to look at films for what they are. I'm sad to see them go because they were the only critics I felt whose crtiques and opinions actually mattered. The new guys suck and I hope their show gets cancelled.

  • Yes they do suck. Even though I stopped watching E&R (because where I live MadTV airs @ the same time) at least S&E/E&R were waaay better than these new jackasses Mankiewicz and Lyons.

Maggot-wicz and Lame Lyons really ruined the formula of the show, which I grew up with. I swear, if those two don't get fired or if they don't at least change the show for the better then I am definitely going to go absolutely apeshit!!!

  • I want to protest the new show by just not watching it so they can cancel the new guys

Stop watching the show at the movies!!!!!

  • WHY THE **** DID DISNEY CANCEL THEM!

  • Disney didn't cancel them. Richard Roeper decided not to renew his contract and left the show.

  • the new hosts are fags

  • totally

  • i think the show really needs to get cancelled because those as-holes ruined what was a fantastic show

  • What's the new show called? I thought Roeper was still doing it?

  • The new show is still referred to as "At the Movies", but due to contract and health issues, Ebert (Sounds so impolite, but at your request..) revoked the use of the "Thumbs Up" / "Thumbs Down" and left the show, then Roeper followed soon enough after.

If surgery goes well on Ebert's (again, ugh..) vocal chords, then they may set up the review show they mentioned that would be along the lines of the original "At the Movies" series.

But, as of yet - no Roeper show!

  • I haven't watched since Roeper left. I tried the first episode with Ben Lyons and the other guy, and couldn't even finish it. I can't wait for what Richard is working on.

  • Could the 2 new guys be any less interesting? I mean talk about your Carson Daly, Ryan Seacrest type of critics....Siskel and Ebert were the greatest and I wasn't a big fan of Roeper but these new dudes....Man oh man..they suck!

  • Roeper and Phillips were an excellent combination, and Roeper & Ebert weren't as good as Gene and Roger, and never will be.

I <3 Roeper, though - I like his review style, and his passion for movies. Much much more than can be said for the current replacement for Ebert - Ben Lyons.

  • Why do you say Roeper & Ebert first and then say Gene and Roger? Say Siskel & Ebert!!

  • The reason I referred to them as Gene and Roger is mainly because they are the originators of the series. Sure I don't know them personally, obviously, but I prefer to refer to them as Gene and Roger!

  • i missed this episode!!!!!!

.....Philips was starting to grow on me but oh well Roeper said on the Tonight Show he was working on something so i can't wait

  • God Ben Lyons is destroying the show, he is such a tool and seems to know nothing of film.

  • Please come back!!! ;(

  • *sigh* Shame to see a great show go away.

  • the new show is almost unwatchable. any reports of roeper doing another show?

  • Richard mentioned he was talking to new producers last summer. Nothing new yet.

  • They should really do something about the new show. I'd rather see people off the street than the guys on there now!

  • since they've changed the show i don't watch it...the new guys aren't even that good...

  • the showed stop being good when they stopped going by the thumbs up/thumbs down way of reviewing, then it just got boring. the two new guys don't have the credibllity of Ebert, Roeper, and Siskel.

  • At least Roeper and this guy are way better than the Bens are now.

  • this is sad, i enjoyed this show, now its gone. now we just got those two bens who got picked just becuz they just so happened to review films, and have the name ben. that show is disapointing.

  • ;(

    Why?

  • what channle is that on because i want to see how gay they r they suck just from seeing thast other video of theres

  • Protest the new hosts and don't watch the show anymore

  • This just sucks I really wanted to see Phillips take over Ebert's place.

TBH those two have such different view points that it makes it clear which side you should pick.

But it's not like Ebert won't be missed and I'm gonna have to agree with many that it's the end of an era.

Even though the Thumbs being removed was a sign of things to come, it has finally happened.

Either way I hope these two get a shot at their own critic show and that we'll see them again soon.

  • i liked roeper a tiny bit more than ebert but siskel a hell of a lot more than both of them

  • Maybe we haven't seen the last of them. I'm sure someone would be happy to pick them up for a similar show, or these days - even online.

Then again maybe it's for the best, especially with the crap movies hollywood is dishing out these days. Roger Ebert may just want to retire, he's been doing it for so long. I think it seems he probably would enjoy doing it the rest of his life though.

  • Those bastards at Disney closed a great era when they replaced Ebert, Roper and even Philips with those friggin robotic Bens. I hate them, they don't discuss films at all, they just market them for Disney and the other companies.

Thank God they don't get to use the coveted "thumbs up or thumps down" as their rating system. They don't deserve it

  • I'm not American and i access the archive and watch the show online. I don't know if i will use the site anymore now that Ebert and Roeper have both left. I think i agreed with either of them like 90% of the time. It really sucks when they makes changes like these. O well, i hope they still write reviews as usual.

  • It's the end of an era. Nothing will compare to the Siskel and Ebert that had such great chemistry together and such memorable arguements. And with Ebert and Roeper it continued the tradition well. Now it's dead with the two Ben's who aren't very interesting nor have much inciteful about film.

  • thats sad
