this is one of my favorite war movies along with the dirty dozen. like the dozen this movie has an all star cast as well.steve mcqueen is one of the coolest actors that i have ever seen and james garner is great is just about everything he does.i heard that the producers of the film didn't want mcqueen to any of his own stunts but he still did a lot of them anyway because he's an expert bike rider.

My grandfather, Walter Newman wrote the original screenplay for The Great Escape, but took his name off of it because the producer changed a few details that my grandfather didn't think needed changing. He also wrote Cat Balou and The Magnificent Seven as well as several other famous screen plays.
