People will say anything is animal abuse..starving your pet is animal abuse, unfit conditions, beating it daily, animals so traumatized they fear any human contact...THAT'S what abuse is..swear C&N is not abuse and whether people like it or not..dogs are PROPERTY that's why they're called OWNERS & it's the OWNER'S CHOICE whether or not they crop &dock or not. If you want to leave you're dog natural go ahead,BUT if you want to alter your dog, that's cool too!
Boy all you people worried about rather it cruel or necessary.... all I can said his go to another video... I had my Doberman ears cropped because they look better and more attractive I say so what my dog came home from the vet wanting to play with my other dogs... my mom had me circumsized with out my consent and I'm not calling her cruel or mean I love my mom has my Doberman will love me and my family
A dog is not a Honda Civic - something you can buy and modify the way you want. It's an intelligent living creature with a nervous system just as sensitive as yours. A word to you - If you don't like the looks of a Doberman as they are when they're born, don't get a Doberman. Stop abusing and mutilate these animals to feed your own ego.
i have a miniature pinscher without his ears cropped and i didnt have to tape his ears i just folded them back at night and the next day they were standing
@LOKISlog7 Ha ha ha, Loving and Responsible? So please explain, why exactly is it you're altering the way your dog naturally looks? I bet the sole reason is for vanity. Of course it is. You think the dog will look cooler with its ears deformed. Would a loving caring responsible parent surgically alter their kids nose because it stuck out too far? Nope. But that's what you are doing to your dog who is supposed to be a member of your family. Fucking vane scum bag.
@jose607 A responsible and loving dog owner actually. The excuses ive heard for cropping ears on this site are laughable! The bottom line is if it was safer and beneficial to a dog to have its tail docked then nature and evolution would've seen to it that they wouldn't have tails, but wait a minute what's this........ every wild dog and cat in nature still has a full tail? Weird. And as far as ear croppings concerned dogs are more prone to ear infections when the cover has been removed. Obvious.
O.. we fight over the dogs ears and tail ( which help the dog) but yet there are many family doberman who have a heart condition that kills them.. hmm.. confuzed??? i am!
there is nothing wrong with cropping a dogs ears people! it causes them alot less pain than having them spayed or neutered and erect ears ARE natural! look at wild dog breeds. not a single one has floppy ears. floppy ears where bred into domestic dogs for looks and are the cause of alot of ear infections.
Cropping is not cruel, and neither is tail docking. They serve a purpose. Do you think it's cruel to spay and neuter dogs too? Is it cruel to circumsize male human babies?
I have a dog and my VET said I SHOULD have gotten her ears cropped. She has terrible ear infections and no matter how often we clean them, or what medication we get, she is still miserable most of the time. He said if we had cropped her ears as a puppy she wouldn't be prone to her ear infections.
@MetalPomMom Thanks for your wonderful feedback. It's important for people to read stories from REAL people that have had REAL experience. Not just someone trying to force their opinion on others. Thanks for taking the time to post.
Honey let me break my screen name down for you. You seem to have a problem here.
Metal Pom MOM (not DAD)
First of all, I never cropped any of my dogs' ears. Obviously you have had a hard time comprehending what I typed considering you implied that I, as a female, should have been circumsized.
I said that my VET told me that I SHOULD have cropped my dog's ears because of the ear infections that she gets. Go back and reread before you vent on someone and look like an ass, please.
@MetalPomMom na, woman are circumcised too, and the reasons are justified for same reason they do to boys, which you imply is not cruel, which it is. and you related it to cropping
@mynottwst So sweet of you to say. I love how articulate you are in stating you opinion on ear cropping. A truely wonderful human. An inspiration to us all. Keep up the good work. I am sure people really listen when you speak. I know I was moved by your words.
My Dobermann is about the same size as yours. Her ears were up good. After about 4 days the right one fell. Now the vet says the ear will not stand. It sometimes happens and it is nobodys fault. Any suggestions on how to get that right ear up? Im desperate..!!
@deconsructed What posting method are you using? I cannot imagine why your vet told you this. I have seen pups that took up to a year to get them to stand. I would not give up so easily. Check my blog or e-mail me directly and I will advise you.
A lot of things are not allowed in your land. I would be worried about that if I were you and not a simple ear posting proceedure for dogs. One day you may not be allowed to do anything your neighboor doesn't like. Worry about that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In Europe exist laws against ear cropping on dogs. I think this shoult be applied in the US too. Dogs with cropped ears aren't even allowed to start on a dogshow in Europe.
if you would read more about dobermans, you would know that this is done because they have problems with ear infections and also the tail, which the spine goes into, is cut because it can brake when the dog gets older and than it would be painful for him, so this is done because of health not because people want to...
That's bullshit, i know dobermans very well, my father has 2 of them and i also read books about them. Just read what Abstract 310 wrote about, that's why the ears were cropped but today there's absolutely no need to do that.
@SSLazioSerbia dobermans have to have that done to be show dogs also, or if you want to be traditional, it's to give a more dominant and forceful presence. and working dogs also like a K-9 unit.
Yes, you have to feel sorry for an animal that has the best of homes, best of vet care, best of training, best of breeding and a forever home that takes the good with bad. It's sad to see dogs abused this way. There should be a law that requires people to be more educated before they even get a dog. Perhaps Obama will get a Dog Zar appointed soon. Then everything will be perfect. People should never be allowed to chose for themselves. A group of other people should decide for them. Idiots!
@harrisd1dog its good to get their ears cropped they can hear better and they have a less chance of getting an infection the tail must be docked so its tail wont break they have a very soft tail which break easily so these things r done for health but as u call it abuse get ur facts straight
I love all the comments about this isn't natural and human interferance. Does anyone know how Dobermans came to have floppy ears to start with? Is there anything natural about floppy ears? Are there floppy earred canines in the wild? Hummm.... I wonder. Is there any medical reason erect ears are better than floppy ears?
this breed and great danes were primarily used for hunting back in the day and hunters found that it was safer for their dogs to have the ears cropped because otherwise a wild boar could rip the floppy ear right off. eventually it just became a breed standard.
do some research, dobermans were never primarily used for hunting, not saying it doesn't happen though. the primary purpose for the breed is personal protection. one of the few, if not the only breed created for that specific purpose.
people learn to write and ok it isn't natural and i like both floppy ears and erect but the erect ears are more correct to the Sir Luis Dobermann's idea of the dobermann so you could look upon it as keeping with the history of the breed. Docking is also unnatural but only been banned a few years by the English, Australians and other countries and not everybody body is happy with that so the english aren't exactly saints in not tampering.
Seven weeks is a good age. Depending on the type of crop you chose it can take as little as four weeks for the ears to stand on their own to as long as a year. The shorter the crop the sooner and easier it will be to get them to stand.
i have a 5 month old germasn shepherd mix with hybrid wolf and his ears r half way up and bent at the tip so should i tape them like this and for how long?
No. As the puppy grows older and the proper cartilage forms the ears will stand on end. All GSD puppies have floppy ears and as they age the all stand erect.
Ezearz is without a doubt an excellent method and certainly a bit more dummy proof for new owners. The method I posted has been used for twenty years by Tammy and is effective and easy to use for her. But, your method is excellent also. I personally use yet another method. So, there are many ways to post ears. Experience and personal preference are big factors in chosing the method that works for you and your dog. Common sense is needed with all methods to avoid sores and infections.
How long depends on the length of crop you chose. The puppy I am raising now had a medium crop at seven weeks of age. He is ten weeks now and his ears stand well. I will probably have to tape them again if they start to droop, but I wouldn't expect to have to tape them for more than a week or two. Longer crops can take up to four months to get to stand. Show crops can take as much as six to eight months. So, chose your ear length well. It will make a lot of difference to you and the puppy.
