Im assuming that the puppet in the television, was the president, Which would then be under control(Who saw that coming)

And he was rallying the people, probably with propaganda, igniting a war(Thats why there are fighter jets) Which then could be dropping bombs upon first glance, but then seem to fill up the screen baring a resemblance to oil.

And the fire and destruction would most likely be bombs and destruction.
