it's always great when you hear actors not best renown for their musical talents. It's usually pretty bad. Kirk is the exception this is bloody good. He sang a song in the Western Man Without A Star and he was just as good then. I'm surprised he didn't do more.
Someone gave me this on DVD this year and it was edit at the end. I was so pissed I through it out. I found the first relase of the video (unedited) and recorded the song right from the movie.
This version for radio is a little down-tempo and the arrangement has been made more campfire than forecastle. And it is missing the bass riff from Thurl Ravenscroft.
@carbunicle I have all three version, and the one one the movie is indeed more uptempo due to his performace.Yes the deep voice adds a lot to the song. Thanks for stopping by... :)
This was, and still is, my 22-year old daughter's favorite Disney song. She STILL has the cd, and she STILL listens to it. I just pretend not to listen :)
It is impossible not to like this song (it's infectious),and seeing Kirk Douglas performing the song in the movie is so much fun.His actions add flavor to the song. Thanks for sharing with us,and thanks for stopping by... :)
Except I have heard this before. Disney released some sing-along VHS videos a long time ago and I used to watch them as a kid. This song was on it, with the clip from the movie as well as some words edited into the bottom.
@Nachuelerrimas There was a version done by the Wellingtons (the gents who sang the theme to Gilligan's Island).Although it wasn't in the film, it was on the 20000 leagues under the sea soundtrack.
I like both versions but the song in the movie had a different final verse than the one on this record. Is there a story behind this? the one in the movie references monsters. Maybe the change was for a wider audience that hadn't watched the film?
The version of this song that was released on the Disney cd is almost the same, just no mention of monster as in the movie version. Each one (Movie,CD and Record) is just a little bit different. They probably added the word monster for fun, and I think it was a good idea.I also think that your idea as to why it was added is a good one. Thanks for stopping by.
WOW what a great song no doubt bring back old memmories can't wait until our 1st. born arrives she/he's gotta listen to this for sure definately watch 20,000 leages under the sea
I think it's a concertina--sounds like an accordion, but each button produces only one note instead of a chord...Sailors often play them, since they're small and transportable.
Huh. The soundtrack (avalible on iTunes) has this version on it (in addition to the original and the "Moon got brighter and brighter)
However, the instrumentals on this sound synthesizers, and the deeper-voiced back ups didn't sing in the version I have from the Vinyl. However, yours is crackly and sounds as if it did come from a vinyl recording.
