  • Where did you find such a good clip of the Porgy and Bess movie?

  • Outstanding - especially the music editing! Great job.

  • @ohbutyes

Thanks - people don't know how hard it is to make such different songs flow smoothly.

  • Could you possibly track down Jeremy Brett before he was dubbed by Bill Shirley for "My Fair Lady?"

  • @darthkurland

From what I understand, he never recorded any tracks. I have uncovered many others, tho, if you check the clips on this channel and at lostvocals3.

  • This is a wonderful montage and it has wit ... Marni Nixon for Marni Nixon in Sound of Music.

You clealry know of Jack Nicholson's singing scene in "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever." It uses Jack's voice and was cut from the film. And Audry Hepburn did a charming turn with Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but I believe that they used another's voice in the release. You Channel is super ... it is interesting and puts a spot light on some might fine hidden talent.

  • @SidFortune

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I've heard Jack's cut number, and that actually is Audrey's voice singing "Moon RIver" - she also did her own singing in "Funny Face".

  • Great informative compilation.

  • I was struck by the quality of these singers and wondered what became of them.Martha Tilton and the afore mentioned Margaret Whiting were reknowned bandsingers who made recordings for posterity in their own names.I am not sure if this kind of session work paid well, more like it was a supplement to other lines of work.

  • I was very surprised by some of these, like Rosalind Russell. Many of these performers could not sing and were dubbed even after some tutoring.Ava Gardner did a good job and she can be heard on the album recording.I read she talk advice from her then husband,Frank Sinatra.Others wer dubbed, like Belafonte,as he may have struggled with the operatic style of singing. A virtually unknown(then) Marilyn Horne sang for Dorothy Dandridge.

  • @TZEITEL10

You can watch Ava sing both her songs from Show Boat herself and read the entire story at my other channel, lostvocals3.

  • I always assumed that Duke and Hayward had done their own singing and every time I watched the movie I thought to myself "didn't they ever hear of dubbing?" Now I find out they were dubbed so I would have expected better vocal quality. Maybe its the horrible material that Whiting is singing?

  • @expoboy52

You can hear Patty sing it herself and Judy Garland sing for Susan in other clips on my channel. You'll see why Patty was dubbed.

  • Also, hard to believe Patty Duke and Susan Hayward were dubbed for "Valley of the Dolls." Those vocal performances are absolutely dreadful. And as far as "too many to add - it would end up being an hour long" I say go for it!!!

  • @expoboy52

Margaret Whiting dreadful? Don't let Michael Feinstein hear you say that...

  • @expoboy52 If you go back to the Forties you will find that Margaret Whiting was a popular band singer;in her day i believe she outsold Doris Day.Margaret died recently,RIP.

She sings pretty well here,i have heard worse.I never understood why Carol Channing was feted as Dolly Levi as her voice is like listening to nails on a blackboard.Elaine Stritch and Ethel Merman were not much better.

  • Some of these are really surprising, especially Harry Belafonte, Rita Moreno and Lesley Caron.

  • @expoboy52 Rita could sing but there was some dispute over royalties which was settled by hiring someone to sing for her.

Belafonte likewise,in his case i think the songs were out of his range and comfort zone, its operatic in style.

  • @TZEITEL10

Rita has said she was dubbed in WSS because the key was too low for her. She did her own singing in "America" so that means that royalties were not an issue.

  • @lostvocals6 I heard the story during a documentary,i know Rita can sing well -she has a warm voice .She sings in The King annd i.Thank you for thses videos.

  • @TZEITEL10

I think you're misremembering. You need to go back and check your source.

  • another you could add is Rocky in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

  • @blonddie

Too many to add - it would end up being an hour long! = )

  • Charlie King sings elsewhere in the film. This bit of Nagel sounds like a non-pro singer, which King was. Still, it's a wonderful montage - super!

  • @djwein

Yes, I know he does. But all those sources list him as dubbing for Nagel. I never go by the sound of voices, since dubbers are expert at changing their voice to match the onscreen performer.

  • I think that really is Conrad Nagel - doesn't sound like Charles King.

  • @djwein

The IMDB, Wikipedia, and The Dubbers List all say it is Charles King. I did get the film title wrong, however - it's "The Hollywood Revue of 1929".

  • Awesome! Thanks for making this. Interesting and entertaining.
