  • This has never been one of my favorites by JoCo, but it means a lot more to me now than it did last week. This is now me perfectly.

  • damnit /v/...you and your katawa shoujo threads...

  • @alupihan No matter what happens... never forget that feel, bro.

  • @alupihan come on, dont mention that shit here.

  • @telmacblack I can mention whatever the shit I want. You are not in the position to tell me what to say on the internets.

  • Remember, music can be interpreted in many ways. To each his own.

  • Merry Christmas to the damned.

  • good lord madinno's comment made everything much more logical!

  • @madinno Goodness, that's a much sweeter interpretation. Thank you for your information.

  • When I first listened to this, I thought he was singing about someone he loves that is about to die from a terminal illness. After reading the comments, I figure I must be wrong. Either way, beautiful song and very touching.

  • @christielee1985 Me too. I also though of that, at first. Haha

  • @christielee1985 I read somewhere that it's about his child growing up and leaving home.

  • The boys been hinting that if I'm unhappy he understands if I leave, but I'm not unhappy, the past few days have been rough with our personal stresses mixed with us being in a long distance relationship... but he keeps saying that no one ever cared for him the way I do and he keeps saying its ok if I leave him... I don't know if he's hinting anything -sigh- Listening to this song as preparation.

  • I'm... in the same boat as the last two commenters.

  • @metalkirby777 ditto

  • the bad thing is the girl I think of with this song is my best friend...

  • @w01derdog I know exactly how that feels. but try to keep your head up. just because the relationship ends, it doesn't mean the friendship has to as well.

  • my girlfriend just sent me the "we need to talk" text....so Im pretty sure im about to walk into a breakup.......and this song wont get out of my head...how fitting

  • makes me think of a girl I knew... or at least thought I did...

  • this song is so beautiful

  • oh my glob you guys, drama bomb!

    holy cow

i cried so much i'm afraid the cpu is gonna short circut!

    wahhh TT,TT

  • That's not a tear in my eye. It's a drop of goo from the zombie I just killed with my chainsaw.

Yup, just something in my eye.

  • Man, it's nice to listen to this song when you don't have anyone to think about... Nice or maybe sad.

Either way, this song is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

  • He wrote this song at a time when he was struggling with writer's block. In a way, this song is about the loss of creative talent because he felt like he would never regain the ability to write again. This song is partially about that feeling of loss.

It's written in a way which leads you to believe it is about a person leaving but the more you pay attention to the lyrics, the more the metaphor becomes apparent.

  • @666moshpit666 He has explained since the song was released that this song is about the far-away day when his daughter grows up and leaves.

  • @Madad134

That's not what it says on his Jocopedia.

  • @666moshpit666 thingaweekredux, page 3.

  • There is no stronger feeling than the love a father feels for his daughter, and nothing harder to describe. Coulton does it beautifully, and exposes himself in a unique way, to all of us.

  • I listened to this while I was trying to doze off to sleep, and I started thinking about Metal Gear Solid (I had been playing earlier). The song became about Old Snake dying and leaving Otacon alone to cope and by the end of the song I was cuddling my pillow bawling.

"I saw this coming, but still I am caught by surprise. All of this time I knew that I'd be loosing you; that doesn't mean that it's okay. That doesn't mean I'm ready."

    Straight. Up. Sobbing.

  • @RoyFan33 Nothing like MGS4 to make grown men cry, you know?

  • @theuserofthissite Well, I'm a woman but still, I know very well.

  • the only justification i could have for the 3 dislikers is the fuzzy blue font on an ornage background is abit of an eye strain. the song is perfect.

  • For a long time I thought this was a breakup song. But JoCo recently explained that it was directed more at his daughter and the time when a child grows up and moves on as an independent adult. It makes this song even more powerful with that in mind.

  • @rukidingme so it's like wild world, if cat stevens were jonathan coulton? :O

  • @rukidingme That's still a breakup of sorts.

  • Got love those Baa Baas!

  • To me, this song is about the last bite of a taco...

  • When I was 18 my beautiful girl friend died from a rare blood disease only a few people in the world had it. This song reminds me of her, because she took something I will never get back when she died...

  • Damn! Almost 3 a.m. & I woke up with this song in my head & had to listen to it again :D

  • Amazing song, makes me smile every time I hear it. :)

  • @whenryanattacks you stole my first name....you monster!

you even play guitar (i however play lefty)?!

(i think i have an issue with other ryans, especially one's similar to me....D:)

on a side note name's, habits, and music tastes aside, thanks for posting this song, it makes me feel fantastic (puns hurray :D)

  • 3 people have no souls

  • I wish I found this song sooner, I could've sang it to my ex and got her back.. But I've kinda moved on since.. Meh. Life goes on..

  • I definitely also cried...

  • Why doesn't my volume go any higher?

  • a tear just streamed down my face

  • This song means alot to me because this week a friend passed away and our school went to his funeral and this song perfectly relates to it.

  • I heard this song for the first time today, I am curantly in Iraq and i have left my pregnate wife at home and i know soilders are supposed to be tuff but yes i cried when i heard this. and the really hitting home part for me as a going a way gift my brother had two pendants made for us out of black jade that are a broken heart and each half has our names and when i left he said i got this for you guys so that you have a part of each other while your away and when you return you will be whole.

  • @Stendeck111 i dont wanna be rude or anything but why is it always people with a loving wife and kids go to war? or is it just the media focusing on them?

  • @thegreatninjaman

The media focuses on them more because it makes a better story than "Man with no immediate family loses life in bombing raid"

  • @church1000 war is horrible, unless its in a video game then its fun

  • @Stendeck111 always remember, even the strongest men cry. no one can handle everything by themselves. if they say they can, they're lying.

I feel for you man. my brother recently went back to Kuwait after his 2 week long leave. it was great to see him again and we'll all miss him during these long months. Thank you for your service.

  • @Stendeck111 i really doubt a grown up soldier cannot spell "tough"...

  • @Stendeck111 U r a faget lololol XD haha

  • This song could be relevant to anything, to a child growing up, to a lover having to leave, or to someones who is on the verge of passing..all i know is that i came across it and i burst into tears and i havent stopped listening to it...its on rerun in my head..beautiful song, the words are touching the vocals complimentary..simple and beautiful..

  • its odd i dont know how i got to jocos songs but everyone of them i seem i can relate to..even the name reminds me of a presint she got me

  • The song is about a loved one leaving (in my opinion) either a girfriend or someone in your family

  • Comment removed

  • as beautiful as it is completely heart-rending.

  • I always think this is about a breakup. I'm glad he's not shoving any one interpretation down our throats with it. Very masterful songwriting.

  • @buffmann91 obviously. as allll the comments say

  • @rozar142 what did i say, its been removed an i cant remember

  • sounds like a backstreet boys of umpa loompas

  • to the one person who disliked this.. why do you even listen to music?

  • There in the frame of your face, the cast of your eyes: I remembered her. Sure as hell hurt.

  • I thought this was about a breakup for the longest time, but my grandfather died, and this song came on, and I realized it could be about that, too. A beautfiul song in all respects.

  • Stop saying he "trolled us" This song could be about anything, just like any other song can be about anything. Whatever you see it as, its a good fucking song, so daon't fucking fight over it, K?

  • I thought it was about his daughter growing up and becoming a teenager and going off to live her life.

  • @SpadeX11 It is. He explained it's about your kids growing up and moving on. But it's that open you can attach it to anything. Brilliant song and song writer.

  • This song is so touching.. The one person who disliked this has a heart of steel. >:'(

  • Why do people have to argue about a song? If you don't like it, then fine. Just don't force us to hate it too.

  • Like this if this song ever made you cry. :']

  • Until recently I thought this was just a break up song, but recently, I imagined this man with his wife who was dying of a terminal illness. He knew that he couldn't do anything and no matter how he tried to convince himself she might get better, she just continued to deteriorate.

So he tells her before she dies to take his love with her, but he knows that she can't.

  • @bunnibender1125

When I first heard this song that was actually how interpreted it until I read the comments.

  • I think this conclusively proves that Jonathan Coulton can write about absolutely anything and it'll still be amazing.

  • >Emo lyrics from a satirist musician

    >People think it's deep

Johnathan just trolled you all guys.

  • @XanltheCSG hm no it's not emo its deep because he deeply explains the feelings that you have when your wife/husband leaves you. go to his website.

the only trolling he's done is rick rolling his audience, and i guess fit a few memes in his songs but that's not trolling.

  • @BobFard

Look, everyone has gone through a breakup, this song isn't any more deep then the poetry a girl writes after a breakup.

It's like every other love/hurt song on the planet.

I like Johnathan Coulton and I'm not holding your opinions against you, but I seriously think you guys have been trolled.

  • @XanltheCSG

I think someone's become a bit too paranoid from the internet. Everyone has an emotional side, and singing about sad things does not automatically make things shallow.

  • @eonjolt

I think someones taking music too seriously. Go back to /mu/.

  • @XanltheCSG

Lulz, nice comeback. Someone makes your complaining sound stupid and apparently they're taking things too seriously. I'm pretty sure claiming that the song is a massive troll is taking it more seriously than how I framed it.

  • Goddamnit. I've never been so touched by a song.

  • jonathan coulton PLEASE MAKE MORE SONGS LIKE THIS!!!!

  • I...I was not prepared for this song X(

  • My husband is going to Korea...anything like this makes me sad.

  • my boyfriend died after just three months and this song makes me think of him every time.

  • This song, no shit, almost made me cry when I heard it >_<

I really feel with the person Jonathan Coulton is impersonating - Or feel with him, I dont know if this is a personal experience...

  • close to home

  • I love this song, it's beutiful.

  • @plasmaization1 Usually I'd be a faggot and correct your grammar. But fuck it, this song is too good for arguments.

  • Ive wanted sing this for my X girlfriend for a long time, but id much rather send her a link to this video so she can see the words and hear um

  • this is indeed a beautiful song <3 many sincere thank you's for putting it up :) JoCo is certainly a man of many song writing talents

  • It's moment AGO, not moment TO go.

  • SO. DEEP.

  • Lovely song, but the colors: blue and orange are NOT ok together. Orange on blue isn't so bad but blue on orange hurts to look at....

  • @PocketHamHam and the weird thing is that orange and blue are complimentary colors...

  • WHO HURT YOU JOCO, WHO HURT YOU

  • @onlyashadow1121 famguy ftw

  • john coulton is my idol lol

  • This song is really deep.

  • lol deep

  • Everyone can probably relate to this song in some way. I love it. :')

  • I can see it as losing a relative as well as breaking a relationship.

  • @underwoodfanfreak

Yes, a death of someone is apparent, but starting at 2:40, it becomes almost obvious that it's a break-up.

"No way to make it up now, no room for regret. ... Now I am less than what I was, whatever's left is yours now."

How can he make up for somebody if they're dead. ... Why would he "leave whatever is left of him" with somebody who is dead.....lol Doesn't a break-up just seem more logical? lol

Still, beautiful song. Keep singing JoCo. You're an idol!

  • @omgJOEYJAWS

"No way to make it up now, no room for regret."

For a death, he could be referencing the wrongs that may have happened with said person that's dying. If the person' dead, then he can't apologize to them.

"Now I am less than what I was, whatever's left is yours now."

That could mean that now that said person is dead, his life is no longer as meaningful as it was, and it could mean "I'd rather be dead with you than live without you", but without being suicidal. Just theories.

  • @BroadwayFairy man your right

  • @BroadwayFairy I can see what you're saying, but I still firmly believe it is about losing that one you thought you were going to spend the rest of your life with. I certainly have felt almost everything these lyrics are saying...

I just lost the most amazing girl in the world because we live away from each other, and she couldn't take it any more. And from the start, I knew, somehow, it wasn't going to last for how long I thought it would... Listen to the 2nd verse; it spells it out perfectly.

  • @BroadwayFairy And now, nearly a month later, I wish she would just "Fold my heart up small or break it into pieces," and "find somewhere, and take it with (her) when (she went)," because I have so many precious memories I loved sharing with her, that I can no longer share with anybody... and I don't want to have that kind of pain any more; I want to just forget everything, but I still love her too much to do so, so I'm in almost constant anguish when I reflect on the few times we were together.

  • @BroadwayFairy No its not a deatg uts defenately a break up if the person was dead how could she/he take his heart and fold it up small or break it into peices?

  • @Septemist I think It could be about a person that is ABOUT to die. Like, its not an if thing, its a when thing. He's telling that person to take his love with them wherever they are going.

  • i started tearing up!

<3 jonathan coulton so much :)

  • :D i <3 ittt

  • This song has successfully knocked Bucketheads I love my parents off the best beautiful song IMO.

I knew JoCo was good.. but this is something else
