I live in Arkansas and we have these bad-boys all over the place.....basically anywhere there is water and its not moving at a fast pace....this particular cottonmouth is relatively small compared to many I've seen....best way to find them is not with your eyes but with your nose as the bigger males stink like a rotting animal corpse...one word of advice, don't do what these guys are doing as the bigger moccasins are the ONLY agressive pit-viper in N America...they will chase you
@HawgtiedXX Damn right they will. mean bastards. Had one bite me for no reason, as a kid while collecting tadpoles. Just swam up, bit my arm, and took off.
@HawgtiedXX Your so right bro. I live in Clarksville and see these bad boys every time I go camping or fishing. I try to leave them alone but had to dispatch one in my backyard when it went after my dog. I've seen more cottonmouth than copperhead and their everywhere also.
When I was a kid we had one swim across a lagoon at lake waco to engage us. It was a night fishing trip and that little sucker went out of his way to come over to where we were. Nope, I don't lik'em.
For a Water Moccasin he is really patient with you. Usually they get pissed off right away and won't take a lot of agitation. Should have caught his ass and kept him as a pet.
This is a perfect example of how cottonmouths aren't the "mean, vicious, aggressive" snakes that people think they are. It didn't even strike when you touched it and never once tried to chase you.
It is most certainly a water moccasin. I had one for SEVERAL years (I wouldn't call her a pet, either) Anyway, it is VERY unusual to see one lay there like that. They tend to be extremely aggressive when cornered.
@ChanielDang Cottonmouths usually aren't aggressive, that's usually banded water snakes that act aggressive to scare predators, they look almost exactly like cottonmouths.
@JSpradley123 are banded water snakes poisonous? I don't think so... damn I'm forgetting everything from my field biology class, and I loved that class so much
Nope, there are only 4 types of venomous snakes in the US- Cottonmouths, Copperheads, Coral Snakes and Rattlesnakes (ok so there are 4 or 5 types of rattle snakes but you get the point. lol) if it's not one of those it's not venomous. The Eastern Hognose snake is technically venomous but from what ive read it only effects certain people and it only causes a slight swelling at worst.
@JSpradley123 There are four genera of potentially dangerous venomous snakes in America. Of the rattlesnakes, the US is home to 14 species of Crotalus and all three species of Sisturus.
@sns21274 Yep....cotton mouth. I think it wasn't agressive because of the rubber boot. No heat detection. I was bitten by a copper head. Not a pleasant experience.
Almost steped on one these stupid things while walking next to a creek in Oklahoma with shorts and tennis shoes on. Why can't they move out of the way.
I found on the side of my house, which is next to a pond in Florida, it was a big adult, i had to kill it cause it was so big and it kept striking at me, til this day i have nightmares, the scariest thing I've ever done.
I really wish that people were more educated on snakes. The media made them out to be these man eating aggressive animals. Reading through some of these comments like "if it were a moccasin it wouldve attacked you" is just flat out stupid.
At camp I nearly stepped on one of these by mistake. O_O I was about to step down, then I heard a faint hiss. I quickly backed up when I noticed a thick, black snake slithered under my foot and into the bushes next to me!! You can hardly see it!!
@loopo455 Stepped right on one or it's tail near dusk ,wasn't wearing shoes . Think it was going through my yard to go to the neighbor's pond with fish in it . It tagged me on the calf . Calf swelled up like a ripe melon and huge blisters started forming. Doc took care of me , 1wk off work and now I have a hand size scar on back of calf .
@mwillblade wow dude thats intense, that venom mustve worked fast to do that kind of damage. my friend killed one in his garage the other day, pretty scary stuff.
He's a little one. And clearly not in the mood to waste his venom on a cold object like a stick or a boot. He must be a young adult; his tail isn't yellow and he's black, but he's also fairly small; only about the size of a fully mature copperhead.
Personally I think the name cottonmouth has a double meaning for these snakes. After all, if you sat there with your mouth gaping open for 20 minutes, what do you suppose it would feel like eventually? :)
I think because it is a young snake that is why it was not very aggressive. If it would have been a foot longer, it more than likely would have been aggressive. I am just assuming this. BUT YES, IT IS A COTTON MOUTH. I think people from the south are raised with the knowledge on what to look for with dangerous snakes. If you do not think this snake is dangerous then you are an idiot and probably from the north. :) In the south, We know how to survive.
very dangerous thing to do.....i had one stand up and chase me! they move very very fast......your lucky this one was in a better mood than the one i ran into.....the one i saw dropped from a bush branch and proceeded to attack,......i ran faster than it did...
Wow...I saw one of those in North Carolina. It had horns over its eyes it had to be at least 4 ft. long...maybe bigger. Wish I had a camera with me had to see it to believe it. I didn't know what kind of snake it was since it had the horns over its eyes. Never saw a snake like that before. Must be pretty rare. It was laying in the sun on a tree stump. Always wondered what kind of snake it was. New it was venemous B cuz of its triangular head. Thanks for the vid =)
Incredible video. Beautiful snake and surprisingly reserved. We found my little sister when she was around 5 years old, poking a dead moccasin with a stick.
Beautiful find. I'm presuming it had room to flee and with that, it was also a great display of standing it's ground as cottonmouths are known to do from time to time.
@downrazor11 very cool vid, with a very very cool snake! But, now something off topic; could you please tell me the name of this tune? I know it from a movie, but i can't remember the name of this music, no're the name of the movie! Hope you can help me out! Ok, thank you very much, and thumbs up for you so close to the snake!!
@PetersVidSkillz and often times they are not all a solid dark color either... I have seen diffrent variations of color in the wild.. some appear to be more brown in color others can seem almost black....
this is not a water moccasin because they are much bigger and only live in the water and on the edge of water plus cottonmouth snakes are not the same as water moccasins
Trust me ive seen a moccasin it was at least 5 feet long it was laying by a ditch i poked it with a stick it hissed then i poked again then it was chasing me.
@footballfan927 it is indeed a moccasin. can't you see the fangs? i am so surprised that so many people doubt that this snake is a water moccasin. aside from the rattlesnake family, there are only 2 pit vipers in the us, the cottonmouth (water moccasin) and the copperhead and this is not a copperhead..
@downrazor11 Cottonmouths and water moccasins are the same snake, and they are not overly aggressive by any means. 99% want to be left alone and want you to just back away without them having to resort to biting. Even when they feel threatened they remain very calm and keep their head about themselves. They want any interaction to end peacefully as possible. Very misunderstood species of snake I am afraid.
Very thick in the mid-body compared to common watersnakes, and the tailtell trait is that when they swim in water, they float very high. You can see the entire body on the surface. a watersnake swims with just his head above the surface. Seen it time and time again down here in Mississippi. You will see only 1 or 2 moccasins for every 15 to 20 common watersnakes...
@sambpatriot nah copperheads have hour glass shaped designs on they're body and the head and tail is a copper tone color. this is most def a cottonmouth
Question: Is that really a "cotton mouth" I thought that cotton mouth snakes had a white coloring on the inside of the mouth. Therefore giving it the name cotton mouth?... (I could be wrong)
@TheBBomb94 I understand your concern, but, across its range (the southeastern US), cottonmouths show some variation in their coloration, both external and inside the mouth. The distinct facial markings, facial pits, scale pattern on the crest of the head, and presence of fangs positively identify this creature as a western cottonmouth, without a doubt.
You're luck's going to run out, son. Saw my first cotton mouth/water mocassin today. Actually two. The first was a steel bluegrayish-smoke color which the snake slid fast into the water. The other snake was rusty patterned and I swear on my life the thing was venomous. I stomped my foot over waterhole and the damn thing come out fast after me. I ran screaming for my life!
and what would we have done if the snake popped you on the foot? sorry been there done that! a helicopter ride to the nearest er and a huge hospital bill later. please people be careful these snakes do hurt and will kill you so dont mess with them unless trained.
I fukin hate these snakes there mean as hell. I was walkin down a river one morning and stopped to take a piss then I saw one of these fukers outta the corner of my eye. He leap forward to bite me but luckily I reacted quick enough and avoided my leg gettin bit. A WARNING TO ALL WALKING AROUND THE WATER'S EDGE. LOOK BEFORE YOU PISS
For how aggressive everyone has told me these snakes are I am surprised this one just sat there with its mouth open. Even though you kept messing with him he just sat there.
Next time kill the snake. That's just one more deadly snake out there that could eventually kill someone, especially if a small child walks up on it. Seriously,it's at a state park?? That means alot of tourists go there. Help people out dude, kill it.
@americanliberal09 OMG. What color is cotton? What color is the inside of the snakes mouth? You've got the "liberal" part of your name right. Liberals are dumb.
@z28931 i didn't say the color of his mouth dude i say doesn't look like it to me geez take it easy.
don't mistaken me for a political liberal, the liberal part of my name is meant for personal freedom not political freedom. so no I'm not one of those liberals.
for starters i'm an independent bro what's your take?
@z28931 republicans used to be for individual rights and freedom but now they change their ways. i hate political parties it's not really effective and it's becomes too distracting. your nothing but a slave to the elite control. now that's how i see it what about you bro?
it's not biting because it just wants to be left alone. snakes (just as sharks, wolves, other animals) are NOT killing machines that are out there to get you, they just want to live and protect themselves if they have to!
I like how they stand their ground and reveal their fangs. I used to catch western cottonmouths as a kid. The place where I grew up was infested with them. Luckily, I never got bit by one.
You're just about putting your foot right in it's mouth. If that had been out in the woods and not in a state park, that thing would have bitten you. Cottonmouths don't seem to be fearful of people. They won't try to run away from you, at least not right off the bat. They are slow to evade people.
That is a great video and the hi-def made that thing look like it was sitting in my lap when I was watching your video, well done!! There is something spooky about mocassins, that's for sure!
Actually, this video was a great example of how all the stories you hear about Water Moccasins being super aggressive killers are fabrications! If you'll notice in the video, it took a long time for the snake to get truly agitated and even when he was, he never actually tried to strike. Being a Tennessee boy, I've encountered Water Moccasins countless times and never had one do anything except try to get away or remain motionless hoping I'd go away. Snakes are not monsters, folks!
I really hope you know what you're doing... One thing I love to do is go to school's with my collection of snakes...

Question: Is that really a "cotton mouth" I thought that cotton mouth snakes had a white coloring on the inside of the mouth. Therefore giving it the name cotton mouth?... (I could be wrong)
TheBBomb94 9 months ago
@TheBBomb94 I understand your concern, but, across its range (the southeastern US), cottonmouths show some variation in their coloration, both external and inside the mouth. The distinct facial markings, facial pits, scale pattern on the crest of the head, and presence of fangs positively identify this creature as a western cottonmouth, without a doubt.

@downrazor11 Ok. Thanks for the clarification.

I don't understand why this dude had to provoke and mess around with a dangerous snake? I won't be sorry if he gets bitten!
toddwills 10 months ago
For how aggressive everyone has told me these snakes are I am surprised this one just sat there with its mouth open. Even though you kept messing with him he just sat there.
freshmaker15 11 months ago
Next time kill the snake. That's just one more deadly snake out there that could eventually kill someone, especially if a small child walks up on it. Seriously,it's at a state park?? That means alot of tourists go there. Help people out dude, kill it.

why are they called cottonmouths?
americanliberal09 11 months ago
@americanliberal09 Look at the inside of its mouth.
z28931 11 months ago
@z28931 i'm looking at it but i still don't understand how it looks like cotton.
americanliberal09 11 months ago
@americanliberal09 OMG. What color is cotton? What color is the inside of the snakes mouth? You've got the "liberal" part of your name right. Liberals are dumb.
z28931 11 months ago
@z28931 i didn't say the color of his mouth dude i say doesn't look like it to me geez take it easy.
don't mistaken me for a political liberal, the liberal part of my name is meant for personal freedom not political freedom. so no I'm not one of those liberals.
for starters i'm an independent bro what's your take?
americanliberal09 11 months ago
@americanliberal09 My take is that all politicians are evil, but republicans and independents are the "lesser" of 3 evils.
z28931 11 months ago
@z28931 republicans used to be for individual rights and freedom but now they change their ways. i hate political parties it's not really effective and it's becomes too distracting. your nothing but a slave to the elite control. now that's how i see it what about you bro?
americanliberal09 11 months ago
it's not biting because it just wants to be left alone. snakes (just as sharks, wolves, other animals) are NOT killing machines that are out there to get you, they just want to live and protect themselves if they have to!

Have you ever got bitten in the boot? Wonder if it would puncture it or not.

I like how they stand their ground and reveal their fangs. I used to catch western cottonmouths as a kid. The place where I grew up was infested with them. Luckily, I never got bit by one.

Is this a Esatern,Western or a Florida cotton mouth?
mookeychase0907 1 year ago
You're just about putting your foot right in it's mouth. If that had been out in the woods and not in a state park, that thing would have bitten you. Cottonmouths don't seem to be fearful of people. They won't try to run away from you, at least not right off the bat. They are slow to evade people.
