i heard jms said that for mira alot of this scene came from her experience of the war in the balkans that raged while others (especially powerful european neighbours) did nothing since "the problems of others aren't our our own". That makes this scene even more intense for me, the reality of her rage, just picture those guys as modern day politicians and it still makes sense
Delenn is alright in my book, she stood up to the Grey Council and told them what she thinks of their cowardness and petty interests. I think the Religious Caste are more honorable than the Warrior Caste, the Religious Caste have more courage cause they are willing to help fight the Shadows. I see why Delenn broke up the Grey Council, but it did cause a Civil War on Minbar later on between the Warrior and Religious Caste, but a new Grey Council is created later on.
Loved it when she created the new Grey Council with not 3 of each Caste, but with 2 of the Warrior Caste, 2 of the Religious Caste and 5 of the Worker Caste cause the Worker Caste are always ignored and caught in the middle of the disputes between the Warrior and Religious Castes.
@jeffman52001 hmph. did`nt she and the religious caste try to get sheridan in trouble with that "death 1st" incident?or have all of you forgotten that?she`s not ALL sweetness,goodness,and light,you know.
You do realise the staff was light and hollow anyway? that they would give her a lighter prop for one shot for the break while for the next shot she would be given a metal replica broken in two to drop for the sound effect when she drops it. Its easier for actor and time to get a prop broken then spend five minutes breaking it in one go. The whole point of the scene is to show that Delenn is comitting the unthinkable, tearing apart order, the staff was symbolic of order.
Nah, she couldn't break for the first couple of takes so they gave her a damaged one instead, if you notice there is a slight smile on her face in the clip when she breaks the staff.
@vega3000 They said in the commentary that it was a weakened prop that was suppposed to break on the first take, but she got to the end of the long speech and it didn't.
melodramatic rubbish? looks so dated, but come to think of it, it was dated at the time.

I love this scene.
Shows just how strong these characters are and how much they are committed to the cause of fighting the Shadows.
If I heard this speech myself I would damn well follow her myself.

The cut where she breaks the staff is so fake. It was there because Mira Furlan was too weak to break the staff without a crack being made into it.

the breaking of the staff was inconsequential compared to the breaking of the grey council and eventually of Minbari society.
