  • BRANDON CHUNG LOSES

  • this is like leonard cohen creating halleluyah not many people know the jeff buckley version isn't the original.

  • it's true that the dave and tim version is better but you have to appreciate the creativity it takes to think up this song, if not for daniel then we would never have the dave and tim track, thanks daniel

  • Sorry... Emmylou & Spyboy do this song the best!

  • @mythranite and this is why all nations around the planet hate Americans.

    Grow up jerk

  • @similarfrequency

That's like watching a news report about a crime perpetrated by a black and saying "that's why everybody hates blacks." Jerk. Off.

  • wow this is beautiful! this and dave matthews versions are great but i do think this one is just beautiful!

  • @mythranite I knew to the hole American language so me sorry if me has misspelled words that alter the meaning of sentances.

  • Thank you, Daniel, for such an inspirational song

Hopelessness turning to God for light to see

Those rivers of hope rising up from the oceans

    My eyes have been opened

  • Dave Matthews mastered this song. Sorry to everyone who disagrees.

  • @FutureUCLAStudent I think it's more that you're used to knowing the song through Dave.

  • @abcforall totally agree with you there...

  • @FutureUCLAStudent Sorry, but no.

  • @FutureUCLAStudent Dave's cover is great but the master of any song is the creator of it. I'm sure that Dave would agree that Daniel is a genius songwriter and producer and I'm sure Daniel wouldn't have given permission to cover his song if he didn't think the final product was going to be good.

  • @route00066 Very true... they're both great, but Dave's is better in my opinion.

  • @Muaahahahaha69 english must be a second language, but yes Daniel Lanois did WRITE this song

  • Of course, this is Daniel's song. It's so lovely...I particularly like the version with Aaron Neville as it brings the New Orleans flavor into it. YUM! xoxox DL

  • @Muaahahahaha69 According to Daniel, The Lyrics are by the the Liffey in Dublin

  • @Muaahahahaha69

    Yes Daniel wrote this.

He wrote he lyrics whilst working in Ireland, taking inspiration from a river there that is affected by the tides, He finished the melody to it back in New Orleans.

  • @Muaahahahaha69 please tell me you accidentally typed did daniel lanois WRITTEN this?

  • @asainsoupeaters15 Yes me believes that it was accidentally mistaken for the right spelling when me thinks about it in the past when it happened.

  • Dave does it better in my opinion. Not saying this isn't good, but I think Dave and tim do it way better.

  • Karl?

  • i absolutely loved this song in Slingblade. Jerry Garcia did a great version of this too.

  • all heart

  • @Muaahahahaha69 yeah he did

  • anybody have a tab for this?????

  • @thebobjones333 I've got the chords and main riff if you want that. let me know...

  • @tmmerlo yeah man that would be great

  • @thebobjones333

I just sent it to your inbox, it wouldn´t publish correctly here.

  • very good lyrics and songs but the best i ever heard from him is not to find on youtube, called where the hawkwind kills from the album Acadie

  • @Muaahahahaha69 Yes, he did.

  • anyone else think he looks like Andrew from MGMT?

  • @Muaahahahaha69 You must like Dave Matthews.

  • @abcforall

No he did not, nor did Dave Mathews. I would know. This song was written in Oklahoma City by an unknown.

  • @abcforall No is the answer. The song was was written by an unknown from Oklahoma City.

  • @aaronok1 Guess you are talking about the maker ; I hope you are not talking about The maker ! Because if you do ...well you are just...How should i put it nicely...really ignorant? It was written ,i think, in Dublin and by this guy not really well known...Ya know he produced Bob dylan,U2,Peter Gabriel,Willy Nelson,Emmylou Harris,Neil Young,Neville Brothers,Robbie Robertson...Oooh yeaaaah that unknown guy :Daniel Lanois!!!

  • Haven't heard this song in decades. It is wonderful - so is he.

  • So soft..so good to my ears...and my soul.

Merci beaucoup pour cette belle douceur...

  • This is such a great song, and a wonderful version in this video !

  • I just downloaded this mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • Daniel is from Quebec and he got that special background that makes great artists.

  • @brunofraser Actually Lanois grew up in the Hamilton, Ontario area. That's right, they have French-speakers in Ontario too!

  • @brucewhitehouse Daniel Lanois was born in Hull (Québec). He spent there his first 10-11 years of life. Then he left for the Hamilton area with his mum when his parents got separated. According to his own testimony he had a real hard time learning english. It just took him a few years to get use to it. For sure there are francophone communities in each provinces of Canada. Who doesn't know that!

  • @brunofraser OK Bruno, we've all read "Soul Mining" but apparently nobody knows more than you. But perhaps you could show me a francophone community in PEI!

  • @brucewhitehouse "...but apparently nobody knows more than you." Hey come on! You really got me wrong here... I love Daniel Lanois and I don't care which language he prefer or speaks better. Artist like him should never be in the middle of such controversy. But just for fun and since you mentioned it, maybe you'd forgive me to say that acadians form in PEI 4,2% of the it's population, there even is a french scool committee in PEI so... little but alive, man!

  • @brunofraser The blind and the ignorant...There is no one more blind than the one that refuses to see!

  • @brunofraser What's a "mum?"

  • @terrible714 ... Sorry I ment his mother his mummy!

  • This is an incredible version of one of the best songs written. Thanks for posting this.

  • I dunno, I like the DMB version, I was never huge into Dave's stuff but I have a lot of respect for the guy, he's got a lot of talent and skill, but a lot of it was just never my thing. Lanois though, this guy is just awe-inspiring, the way he takes a very simple progression (I think it's mostly Dm, C and F) and through voicing, flourishes and "punch" on some chords turns it into this ethereal, stunningly beautiful work. One of the most underrated musicians around...

  • Daniel, nobody does this like you! The Master at work! Shivers!

  • this guys good.

  • Love the song and the voice.

Daniel is one of the few true great singer/ song writers with little equal.

    He is special.

  • you kids really out to check out Jerry Garcia Band's version or Willie Nelson's....both passionate...but Jerrys solos are like cascading waterfalls of rainbow tears...

  • he looks too high

  • Wow,,,I came across this from Dave Matthews' and Tim Reynolds' performance. This is great. The original.

  • Performance très émouvante de cette chanson qui transcende les frontières.. Merci!

  • hmmm, me too

  • not gonna lie dmb's version is the shit

  • @sjf6xc

the original on the Acadie record is the shit.

  • @sjf6xc I guess you like the first version you have heard but Daniel wrote this song.

  • @sjf6xc You can keep DMB. Lanois owns this song and always will!

  • @sjf6xc if you mean dave sounds like shit you are correct

  • @sjf6xc if you mean dave matthews sounds like shit you are correct

  • @sjf6xc then you must not understand much about music ;)

  • i wish someone would put the UNlive version on here, geeze man

  • One of my favourite songs ever since I saw him perform at 'Another Roadside Attraction', near Barrie (Ontario, Canada) in the early nineties. We're all very privileged to be able to hear Lanois' music. Thanks for this!

  • Awesome. This is the first time I've heard this performed live. Thanks for yet another great upload, abc.

  • Came to this through Willie Nelson and Emmylous Harris' version. They are both very good. Not sure which I like better as they are quite different.

  • I could not see

for the fog in my eyes

    I could not feel

for the fear in my life

    From across the great divide

In the distance i saw a light

    Jean baptiste

walking to me with the maker.....

    amazing lyrics! Fantastic rendition.

    10*. thank you

  • Love the end, ohh, and the beginning, and then there is the middle...

    :)

  • Happy woman number 2. These are treasures.

  • Wow!!! I am a happy woman! Thank you, thank you, thank you once again abc!!!!

  • This one's is one of my favorites, but there are so many favorites! - I never knew the lyrics before to so many songs. Now all is so much clearer...

  • Just great!!!

  • a song that bring tears.......it is beloved, by me.
