Pinochet's evil did visit our shores. His assasins murdered an exiled diplomat and former ambassador, Orlando Letelier and his American co-worker Ronni Moffit with a car bomb in Washington D.C. on Sept. 21, 1976. Jara had been killed three years earlier...Sept. 15, 1973. This was the first act of terrorism on U.S. soil but because of the U.S.' attachment to the Chilean government it was downplayed and isn't a history lesson today. It should be!
Adrian Mitchell's was a great voice for freedom and justice. Thank ye Mr Guthrie for putting his words to music in memory of another champion of decency.
Beautiful. When I hear songs like this, I remember why we have to keep fighting for a socialist world that belongs to all the workers, where there are no more capitalists or bosses.
Anyone who ever questions the power of song, should ask themselves why it was not sufficient just to kill Victor Jara to attempt to silence his voice. Was it necessary to break both his hands? However, music and spirit lives on.

The sentiment in this beautiful, classic piece also expresses the life and spirit of the Seeger and Guthrie families as well as people like Harry Chapin and Joan Baez! May this spirit never die, and let us pray that nothing akin to the song's ending ever happens on or near our shores. We must all remain vigilant.
Thanks Jackie for all of this great stuff! This brings back some fond memories. I saw Arlo for the first of many times back in '77 or '78 with Shenandoah. It was a truly memorable show.

Arlo has been one of my all-time favourites for about 30 years. Glad I saw him live in Germany some time in the late 80s.

It wasn't nice of the US government to support Pinochet's military coup in Chile in 1973

"'The copper bosses killed you Joe. They shot you Joe,' says I. Says Joe, 'What they forgot to kill went on to organize.'"

"As long as we sing his songs, as long as his courage can inspire us to greater courage, Victor Jara will never die."

Check out a version sung by Christy Moore, an Irish singer. Very different, but equally brilliant. Can be found on youtube.

Indeed, a very fine version with great guitar work, but Arlo's rendition is still my favorite.
