The US doesn't need a smiling clown for a president like Reagan. If you think Obama is bad, think again, Reagan DOUBLED the deficit. Meaning Obama would need 25 trillion dollars in debt to beat fiscally conservative Reagan.
This country is paying the price today because of those policies made yesterday by Reagan. Trickle down economics does not work no more than Trickle up economics can work. Reagan should have been impeached or over trading weapons to Iran. But yet Clinton was Impeached for lying under oath over a consentual sex.
@MegaELECTRICEYE Congratulations, you are proof of the sorry state of education in America today. Go back and study your history and learn some critcial thinking so you don't embarass yourself anymore with ridiculous comments like this one.
@smmichie You mean like no Child left behind Education that Jefferson and Obama forced down on us? It was JFK and Obama that traded those Weapons for Hostages. And Bill Clinton did not Lie under Oath about Consentual Sex, it was Rape. And trickle down economics does work we just have not seen it yet. OK!! Yeah your right I need to go back and study history. So I can learn some critical thinking like Sarah Palin you betcha.
Reagan, a great communicator? His "there you go again" comment was the last resort of a schoolyard bully that couldn't immediately think of anything to say when confronted. A college debate judges panel would have destroyed him. That's why Mondale smiled broadly. He thought Reagan had just fallen on his sword. Fortunately for Reagan, the GOP spinners turned ii into a victory.
Reagan did away with free education in state universities, raided the social security fund, killed FAIR&BALANCED NEWS by ending the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE,allowed corporations to monopolize by not enforcing the SHERMAN ANTI-TRUST ACT, espoused DEREGULATION,stopped PENALIZING employers that hired the undocumented in order to break the backs of unions&the MIDDLE CLASS.Touted the MAGIC HAND OF THE FREE MARKET(code words for BILLIONAIRES), YES HAPPY BIRTHDAY RONNIE REPUBLICAN CLOWN
Does anybody remember how UNPOPULAR Reagan was after he left office... ??? History is really being rewritten... Scandal after after, HUD, Iran-Contra, EPA, Inslaw, Deaver... He was THE GREAT COMMUNICATOR, but people are totally rewriting history without regard to the facts...!
Mondale lost every single state except Minnesota. Now Ted wants to name the new stadium after him. Mondale wanted to raise taxes on everyone that made over $25,000. I think LA will be able to get the Vikings with the Mondales fixing things.
Reagan was a mediocre president at best, and I say that as a lifelong conservative. A simple perusal of the national debt should be enough to see that the story of Reagan as the arch-conservative is a myth. Isn't there usch a thing as a president who doesn't tax AND doesn't spend?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What a hypocrite. Worst President ever. Full disclosure: they all suck(ed), but Reagan was exceptionally destructive. Reagan's fiscal policy is responsible for the greatest recession in the history of the world, one for which there is little likelihood of ever fully recovering the wealth and stability of the middle class seen in the mid-twentieth century.
Reagan also both expanded government and raised the deficit to historic levels and then walked away from office with the biggest deficit ever
@googleviI Clinton was the last fiscally responsible president in recent history.
Reagan gets credit for realizing his tax cuts were grossly irresponsible and were damaging the economy and responding by raising taxes in spite of his incessant public anti-tax blather.
In fact, no peacetime president has raised taxes so much on so many people in American history.
@RFIDemocracy - I love reading these silly little posts by lefties because they show a that liberals posses an inability to engage in critical thinking and a complete lack of knowledge economic policy and leadership. Please keep posting, RFI, I enjoy laughing at you.
1. By a country mile, the president that increased national debt the most by every metric was Ronald Reagan. Conversely Clinton increased it the least.
2. The only years with average annual gains in the national debt over 15% were under republican presidents.
@RFIDemocracy -- Never mind that the Congress was controlled by the Democrats...after all, the Constitution doesn't allow the president to do anything other than sign bills into law. In fact, the Democrats controlled the purse strings--i.e., fiscal policy. Also, wealth isn't created by government but by individuals. There isn't just a single pie to slice up and recover. Nice try.
@chrikac No shit? So you are suggesting the president doesn't control the political agenda while he is in office.
How convenient. I guess it must have been Congress who came up with the idea of blowing a trillion on two fake wars off the books. That's a cute little notion. Enjoy it.
@RFIDemocracy Silly uneducated liberals criticize great Presidents like Mr. Reagan and turn around and vote for a president who is truly destroying our country. Recommendation: Economics 101 & History 101 before you open your mouth or keyboard again. I am gald I can help you.
@smmichie Yeap!!! this is why we need to close down more Schools and layoff Teachers. So we want have uneducated liberals. IT's a known fact Schools, and University's are whats wrong with America. They support the communist agenda. And yes Reagan economics worked real well we just have not seen the good of trickle down economics yet.
@smmichie The problem with your Economics 101 & History 101 theory is it has proven to not work. Of course your way to educated to notice that one. Well Obama is getting alot of help from the GOP in destroying this country. Of course the GOP plan of TODAY in getting Americans back to work is we are against Abortions and Gay Marriages and Just Say NO! And of course shut down our education system. So we will have more future GOPers. Yeah out of the LOOP Reagan was great.
Reagan, Clinton and Obama...to have 3 great Presidents in my lifetime is unexpected and not underappreciated. Thank God there are people who still care to this extent about our general welfare and the American dream.
Terrible watching Reagan stammer and stumble through his lines, 3.40 shows him at his worst. Plainly Alzheimers was already having an effect on him, and he should not have entered into a second term. America is successful in spite of its presidents, not because of them, Reagan's illness in his second term proves that.
Reagen was a fool. His deregulation and tax cut policies are largely responsible for getting us in the messes we're in today. Reagenomics works well for the wealthy and you know what trickles down. The gap between the middle class and the filthy rich has widened dramatically. Our long-term prosperity will pay the price! And you "republicons", thanks for the war monger team of w/cheny too! They are responsible for the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands!
@ReduceGHGs Actually, the US needs to STOP policing the world, and that began after 1945, first against Communism, now against Islam. The US should've done the one thing that mattered most for the once great nation.... CLOSE.... CLOSE the Rio Grande border (US-Mexican).
It's not just Reagan, EVERY US president after FDR has been a FUCKING War Monger MORON!!!!!
I certainly agree that the US does far too much policing around the world. And I agree that more border security is needed but you simply can't stop the flow of illegal immigrants if the disparity of living standards continues.
.
And thank you for considering me "MoreOn" rather than "MoreOff". But it is true that reagan did much to harm the long term prosperity of this country.
All that I posted hold true despite your adolescent vulgarity.
@ReduceGHGs On the Border issue, it's NOT to stop flow of illegal immigrants, more like LIMIT it. I agree with your points on Reagan, but again it's NOT just him, EVERY US president (after FDR) have done every possible way to ruin the country's world image and economy, too focused on building war machines to defend it's political interest at the expense of other countries. Capitalism is what actually works well for the rich, "Reaganomics" just pushed that to the extreme.
I do like Regan but what I desagree with him is he only cared about the rich & give weapons to the Iranians to free US hostage. It was the stupid pilots fault who failed the mission Operation Eagle Claw.
Wow, and this is coming from the guy liberals at the time called a 'dunce.' He absolutely humiliated Mondale, made him look like an idiot, deflected every attack so cleanly.
A sack of shit moron who read Westerns in the afternoon before taking his afternoon nap. He was bossed around by his corporate handlers like a little bitch. Thank Ron for the great health care system you supported and the terrific free market principles and deficits you and the rest of your followers gave us. Take a shit on Reagan's grave. He deserves it.
@MrConservative1776 we dont need Reagan. Reagan created a bigger recession. Bush sr just did the same policy. Clinton made a surrplus in the state budget.
@MrMacintosh2011 ok. Let me ask you: Who Invaded Libanon? Who invaded Grenada? Reagan did. He is the reason why US went from nr. 1 to 14 in wages. Now in 2010 USA is on 52.
@MrMacintosh2011 im going there, cause its the truth. Reagan created a huge recession in us economy. Worst part is that his VP got got elected president in 88 and continued his policies Today has this numbers. Infant mortality rate: US is 48th. Overall health: 72nd. Freedom of press: 44: Literacy: 55th .honestly, USA look silly, waving the big nr. 1 finger!!! and guess what? Reagan were selling arms to Saddam Hussein!
@MrMacintosh2011 no. im not a democrat. I were until the democrats started moving to the right. And the rights has moved into the mental hospital. The democrats has taken over all the old things the GOPs used to stand for. All the GOP`s is now is this: a group of religious lunatics, flatter at first, and civil war rean-actors, whos worrying that Obama is a sosicalist. He is not even a liberal. Im a Libertarian.
@Kimmis1990 It has nothing to do with right, only with who can do the necessary international crime fighting, and the will to do so. Right now that is mostly the U.S. The Arabs and Chinese are part of the problem, and the Europeans are too self absorbed to contribute meaningfully to fighting international maritime pirating, for instance.
@Kimmis1990 Reagan was selling arms to Saddam Hussein because he was at war with our much greater enemy at the time, the Ayatollahs of Iran. Clearly he was correct to be doing so, as was Bush correct to oppose Saddam when he invaded peaceful Kuwait.
@Kimmis1990 My head is spinning from attempting to read such a wreck of a paragraph. Seriously friend, you should go to your local community college and enroll in an English class. You don't help your argument with that horrible grammer.
@NICCAGE26 Like Carter but even worse, he'll go down as a clueless ideologue whose simplistic, anti-American view of the world failed him and us time and again when it came time to make real decisions.
@hatchbx That is because Obama was a Hollywood actor. Liberals elect presidents that came from Hollywood. If they act well on Screen then they must be a good leader.
@pluto4847 Your right, I remember Abraham Lincoln, he was great, and he give the Liberals hell. Yeah!!! I always enjoyed watching Abraham Lincoln on TV. He was far better than Obama, and CNN could not talk negative about President Lincoln. And Lincoln did Free the Slaves, and won the civil war. How many wars have the Liberals won? WWII NO, Vietnam NO, Iraq NO, If it was not for BUSH Bin Laden would still be free.
Actually Reagan's wit rivaled that of Lincolns. He was more of a leader than Lincoln was, though he was a decent president but not a great one. Reagan was a great president and no other modern president matches his reputation.
@Mage13246 are you insane? he had senile dementia/alzheimers while in office..started prayers in his speeches and quoted the bible, almost bankrupted the country and lied about the whole iran/contra scandal, then pulled our troops out that just got massacred,so 241 marines deaths were for nothing..yeah,thats a great reputation..not..i cant believe i served my country under this shithead
Is Ronnie senile at this point or did it take another couple of years? He sure seems a wreck to me. Regardless, he's the proud owner of the largest deficit of all presidents before him combined. So much for fiscal conservatism.
this fascist bastard declared War on the American people with his phony war on drugs a, economic policies, and reckless borrowing from foreign banks (tripled the national debt).
Half of America is now pauperized living below the poverty line, and we now have 25% of the planets prisoners with only 5 % of its people....A 500% increase in prison population since he and his treasonous laws/ policies took affect.
He was the enemy and only stupid people don't see this
is it just me, or at 0:37 does Mondale admit that he is going to lose? Or is he just talking about between Nov. and Jan. between the election and the inauguration?
Reagan was a great speaker, and I am very much close politically to the sort of ideas he espoused in 1980.
Unfortunately after he was shot in 1981, GHW Bush pretty much became the de facto president.
It wasn't just the military that grew in the 1980s, however in the late 70s a the Soviets had gained a destabilising nuclear advantage that had to be closed
@disamjisa Then let me correct myself: the Reagan Administration facilitated one of the largest expansions of government in US history.
I accept that the process began before Reagan, that Carter started much of what Reagan finished. But Reagan can't accuse the Democrats of over-feeding the government while he (or his administration) is doing that even more so.
A nuclear advantage is meaningless. It would only take a few hundred nuclear weapons to destroy humanity. No one needed to close it
@seltian mass murder? do you have any sources to back this up or are you just going to keep spewing crap out and just claim its all facts? and screwing the poor? the poor are screwed no matter what, it didnt take reagan for them to be screwed. huge debt? and clinton, bush and obama havent made the debt even worse than its ever been?
@seltian since when hasnt a president made the debt even worse than it already is? and i believe bush, clinton, bush 2 and now obama all have us involved in a bigger war than reagan did, in fact, reagan did not even have our military involved in a full scale war. quit talking out your ass and come up with credible statements.
Clinton worked to pay off the debt. Under Clinton, we had the first balanced Federal budger since 1969. He made up for the deficits that Reagan and Bush the Elected gave us.
Reagan did not directly take our country to war. But he bombed lots of people and financed smaller wars by puppet states. He also embargoed leftist nations (Nicaragua, Yugoslavia), leading to economic collapse, starvation, and death.
@seltian so what? every president finances a country to fight a war. and what about presidents that do not get involved and help when genocide is being committed, like, hmm, i dont know, Jimmy Carter when Idi Amin was leader of Uganada, or when Stalin was in charge of the USSR, why dont we make the case that Carter was a murderer then too because he didnt not help 300,000 Ugandans from being slaughtered?
I accept that just about every American president was a mass murderer. I never claimed otherwise.
My only point about Reagan is that he was a particularly nasty one. Reagan, Nixon, and Truman were probably the three most aggressive, pro-war, militant presidents we've ever had.
@seltian oh really? What about Lyndon Johnson, James Knox Polk (if you even know who that is), and Andrew Jackson? Andrew Jackson was a huge supporter of injustices on Native Americans, hence the Trail of Tears. Polk was for sweeping across the West and taking California, Arizona, Texas, etc, hence the Mexican-Ameican War.
@seltian And Lyndon Johnson was responsible for the mass murder of Vietnamese during the Vietnam War by sending mass amounts of American troops there. So, honestly, Lyndon Johnson has probably killed more people than Reagan, Truman and Nixon combined. Johnson wanted the Vietnam War badly, one of the reasons he did not get along well with Kennedy who was not so pro war.
@seltian yeah and we went to war with Kosovo under Clinton, went into Somalia under Clinton, fired missiles into the Sudan killing many civilians under Clinton. And Clinton financed many wars, as did Reagan, Bush, Bush Jr. Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, etc. There is never a president who does not finance some sort of military escapade, so get off your high horse and realize that. most of the wars in American history were started under the leadership of a democrat president.
Never did I claim that liberals/Democrats are any less pro-war than conservatives/Republicans.
The other two nasty mass-murdering presidents that I named were Truman (a Democrat) and Nixon (a liberal Republican). And some of the most anti-war activists (Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan) are conservatives.
@seltian So don't come here and say Reagan was one of the most pro war Presidents we ever had, seeing that we never got involved in a full scale war during his 8 years in office, I think the evidence speaks for itself. Lets see, who is more pro war? Lyndon Johnson who threw hundreds of thousands of American troops into a war no one wanted to fight, or Reagan who did not get involved in a war?
As I understand, Nixon killed far more Vietnamese than Johnson. Johnson mainly sent troops to Vietnam (which was bad, but at least troops can discriminate between civilians and combatants). Nixon bombed their major cities. Bombing is far less discriminate than sending in soldiers.
Again, sending in soldiers is not the only, and not even the worst, pro-war action. As I said, bombing can be far worse, because it doesn't discriminate against civilian targets. So can an embargo, for it starves innocents to death.
So can providing funding and weapons to another's troops (as Reagan did for the Contras, for Iraq, and for al-Queda).
@seltian u want to talk about bombing? ok, great u support my argument with Johnson. Kennedy withdrew 1,000 troops in 1963 before he was killed, Johnson then expanded the war right after. The Tet Offensive occurred during Johnson's term, not Nixons and the majority of attrocities were commited during Johnson's term and the napalm attacks were more frequent during Johnson's term, I believe it was Nixon who got most of our troops out of Vietnam.
@seltian And Johnson had more people bombed than Reagan, in fact Clinton had more people bombed than Reagan. So Reagan provided weapons to Al Qaeda, so what? We were not the only ones funding Al Qaeda. And honestly, war in general does not avoid civilians. You want to know how many German women were raped during World War 2? Over 2 million. Why? Because that is what war is. Bombing is not the only thing that hurts civilians in war, even ground assaults hurt.
I didn't say that bombing is the only thing that hurts civilians. You're missing my point entirely. I said that bombing is worse than deploying troops because troops have the ABILITY to discriminate between civilians and soldiers, explosions do not.
Nixon eventually got the troops out (because of Watergate), but bombing was intensified, and it was Nixon who invaded Cambodia and bombed that.
@seltian So don't talk about war and how bombing is the worst aspect of war, there is no worst aspect of war, it is all terrible. And it does make a difference if we did not get involved in a war. When we get involved in a war, we bomb, we invade and we destroy which is what we did in Iraq, we did not do that with Reagan. Can you name countries that our Air Force bombed during the Reagan administration? Any wars? I am curious.
"So Reagan provided weapons to Al Qaeda, so what? We were not the only ones funding Al Qaeda."
That's SUCH a good defence. Because other people were doing it, that makes it okay.
Sure, Reagan bombed Libya. And we funed plenty of wars (Contra war, Iraq-Iran war, etc.). We didn't land troops there, but we provided the money and weapons that kept these wars going.
@seltian no it doesnt make it ok, but u dont bash those people, you are ignorant and hypocritical and u point the finger at one out of many who do this stuff, that is where my beef with u is, and your lack of evidence.
The Reaganites did attack Libya but it was humiliated in Lebanon and chose to stand down vs Syria and Iran. For eight years they talked tough against Hezbollah', Islamic Jihad (in truth, they didn't even know the difference between them) but did next to nothing. Afghanistan looked good but, ahem....
@seltian I am curious, not funded but involved personally, can you name any, and I want sources from credible people, don't give me something like "oh well, this college student or wel this guy who made this film" No, I want credible, scholarly sources.
Funding is involving personally. If I provide guns for a mob boss, and he goes and massacres people, and I knew that was going to happen, I definitely carry some responsibility for what happened.
Reagan also embargoed countries (economic warfare). Our embargoes on Yugoslavia and Nicaragua had devastating effects on the populations.
@seltian Lyndon Johnson is a murderer for our long overdue involvment in Vietnam, Kennedy for the Bay of Pigs invasion and for early missions in Vietnam. Nixon and Vietnam too, see, you can point to just about any president in the last 100 years and say they had a hand in some sort of killing, so to point at Reagan and say he was the only one is hypocritical and shows your ignorance.
@seltian And also, that does not make someone a mass murderer, you need to understand what that word means cause you obviously dont. Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, Ghenghis Khan, Nero, Idi Amin, those were mass murderers, not Ronald Reagan, lol, my god, i can believe I even have to defend that.
With regard to Reagan's spiel on tax cuts being equitable across the board. In 1986 there was a bait-and-switch; another round of tax cuts that brought the top bracket all the way down to 28 percent and it was flat from about $30,000 all the way up ($60,000 in today's inflation terms). So as soon as Reagan got re-elected he went to work butchering the tax system's progressivity.
WRONG....the 1986 tax bill was a tax INCREASE on my "rich" people because it eliminated hundreds of tax-loopholes enjoyed by the ultra-wealthy (loopholes put in by Democrats and benefiting mostly wealthy leftists). So some people have termed his 1986 tax cut as a huge tax inctrease. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
Ronald Reagan is said to have played four years of football at Dixon High School and four more at Eureka College (both Illinois) but finding team photos has proved to be difficult. Helpa, helpa!
He and his brother and his cousin who was hired by FOX News fucked some things up. I somehow doubt that Gore lost in my blue state. Bush rigged 04' too by raising the terror alert and shooting his numbers up from 43% to 45%, and knocing Kerry's down from 49% to 46%. He didn't win either election legitimately, and America is now totally fucked in so many areas because of a President who didn't even fucking win.... It makes me sick to my stomach.
There is no election, only selection. You people have to know this. Does anyone believe "The People" have anything to do with these monarchs and their reigns of lootings, thefts of seized drugs, etc.? Repub + Dem = twins. Read the Declaration of Independence--it's mostly hype, having nothing to do with reality. And Ronnie gave us the same twaddy.
As repusive as a Reagan is, the Dems are the eternal partners-in-roadshow of the Repubs. One must have the other in order to maintain the charade of "democracy." Yes, we may petition our Govt--but our Govt is not obliged to read the petition. And it's been this way from the beginning. The King was replaced by a more subtle dictatorship, but a two-party (one entity) dictatorship is what it is.
The dip-chad votes were not counted when they should have been, which would have went in Gore's favor. The Supreme Court and Republican representatives in Florida rode this process along.
I already described what happened in 2004. Although Bush didn't directly rig the elections, you get what I mean.
@IFloridaMotocrossI You have never read nor heard about Nixon losing Illinois to Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election due to questionable votes?
My point being is that you are arguing Bush stole the 2000 election because a bunch of dip-shits in Florida either didn't punch out their chad correctly or voted for the wrong individual because they didn't know how to read a ballot.
The 1960 Presidential election was flat-out stolen from Nixon because of rigged votes.
Kennedy would have still won the election if Nixon was to take that state. The Republican National Committee initiated recounts in multiple states, but the results still favored Kennedy.
If the Chad votes were counted in Florida, Gore would have taken the overall win, but the Supreme Court kept shooting down attempts to file a recount in various ways. Jeb Bush, Katherine Harris, and other Florida Republicans played their role in stealing the election.
thats why they need to get rid of the electoral college in pres elections. just let the people decide. yet no one comes up with that as a actually issue that needs attention
As we observe Russia today, we still see the largest country on the Planet, still a fully loaded super-power. Yes, the USSR shed its "Empire" but the new map-lines have only given birth to new conflict, new struggle, new wars. It was an open secret that Cowboy Reagan wasn't to be taken seriously, that he was what he appeared to be, a storeroom dummy. Then, Talk Radio began re-writing Hx ala the "MINISTRY OF TRUTH" in Orwell's "1984." "1984" has become reality in many ways--starts with Reagan.
As fiendlike as Ronnie was, he was almost human compared to LBJ. Our country's leadership is out of control even as it remains firmly in control. Dem and Repub highriders as a monolith compare favorably to the Inner Party as scrupously defined in "1984."
In point of fact, no one voted for Ronnie. Ever since LBJ engineered the JFK removal, our votes have been "lost in space." Never again will our Power Structure allow anything as dispensable as "The People" to decide anything. It may seem ludicrous but it is a fact of life. Believing in UFOs and strange beings who live in the sky or in a firepit below is the same thing as believing in democracy. Forget these imaginary flights of fantasy. Lump them and dismiss them as the bunkum they are.
Oh, by the way, PutinBlood, I think that the Chinese might have something to say about that 'ruling the world' thing. If there were nothing left but islamic fascists like yourself and the Chinese, I think the odds would heavily favor the Chinese. They are not compassionate like we are.
We want freedom...for all people.
I pray you take a breath before you go down that road because the Chinese will systematically eliminate everyone of you.
As much as you hate me, I still pray you feel joy.
Obama passed that Stimulus Bills at almost TRILLION $'s a World first ever in History & money is being printed at this very moment.. Obama also give acorn in that bill 8'5 billion.. Inflation is coming to smack Americans in the face & the middle class at some point will get tax.. Jimmy Carter all over again..
A Dem. president handed Bush a 128 BILLION dollar surplus; over 8 years Bush turned that into a FIVE TRILLION dollar deficit. While financing a TRILLION dollar war, based on lies, GWB passed a TRILLION dollar tax cut for the wealthiest 1%. He also passed an UNPAID for TRILLION dollar Medicare Rx drug bill that he tacked on to the debt. 8 years under Bush=2 wars, an economy of the verge of collapse, stock market crashing, 5 trillion added to the deficit, and you're worried about O?
"A Dem. president handed Bush a 128 BILLION dollar surplus; over 8 years Bush turned that into a FIVE TRILLION dollar deficit. Obama's deathcare bill will spend more in 1 year than all 8 yrs of Bush's Iraq fiasco.
Our economy isnt even close to the verge of collpase...our GDP is still growing at the rate of Chinas, which is still incredibly fast...we are in a recession, not a depression. Stock Markets are at the same place they were at 2000. Look at the facts...there IS difference between a recession and a depression.
yeah but the worthless GOP didn't even try to stop it... Obama may be another Jimmy Carter but i'll be damned if we're gonna find another Reagan in the sellout GOP!
Actually when Bush sent us to war and enlarged medicare he screwed us financially...the stimulus put money back into the system, not all of the stim money but alot. And when you say Obama has spent more than Bush did, that's just not true. Do you know how much he spent in Iraq? He was in such a good position after Clinton (300 billion dollar surplus) but he didn't take advantage for the sake of the nation...as he should've
Reagan was out-debated. I had the opportunity of watching Carter/Reagan debate of 1980 and come to the same conclusion, Carter won the debate. I realize this goes against conventional wisdom.
Huh? Yeah it does go against conventional wisdom in the same way that thinking that the sun revolves around the Earth goes against conventional wisdom. Please tell me you're joking! Otherwise, take your meds and go back to sleep.
Never said he was, so stop putting words in my mouth you disgusting moron. It's 2009 now, and Obama's already screwed us beyond comprehension with his stimulus package and trillions in debt. Do you even think before you post??
Reagan, of course, DID raise taxes but what the hell...he also sold arms to terrorists but...what the hell.

Mondale lost every single state except Minnesota. Now Ted wants to name the new stadium after him. Mondale wanted to raise taxes on everyone that made over $25,000. I think LA will be able to get the Vikings with the Mondales fixing things.

1. By a country mile, the president that increased national debt the most by every metric was Ronald Reagan. Conversely Clinton increased it the least.
2. The only years with average annual gains in the national debt over 15% were under republican presidents.
Suck on those silly little facts, junior.
RFIDemocracy 11 months ago
@RFIDemocracy -- Never mind that the Congress was controlled by the Democrats...after all, the Constitution doesn't allow the president to do anything other than sign bills into law. In fact, the Democrats controlled the purse strings--i.e., fiscal policy. Also, wealth isn't created by government but by individuals. There isn't just a single pie to slice up and recover. Nice try.

Terrible watching Reagan stammer and stumble through his lines, 3.40 shows him at his worst. Plainly Alzheimers was already having an effect on him, and he should not have entered into a second term. America is successful in spite of its presidents, not because of them, Reagan's illness in his second term proves that.
WinchesterRanger 1 year ago
Reagen was a fool. His deregulation and tax cut policies are largely responsible for getting us in the messes we're in today. Reagenomics works well for the wealthy and you know what trickles down. The gap between the middle class and the filthy rich has widened dramatically. Our long-term prosperity will pay the price! And you "republicons", thanks for the war monger team of w/cheny too! They are responsible for the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands!
ReduceGHGs 1 year ago
@ReduceGHGs Actually, the US needs to STOP policing the world, and that began after 1945, first against Communism, now against Islam. The US should've done the one thing that mattered most for the once great nation.... CLOSE.... CLOSE the Rio Grande border (US-Mexican).
It's not just Reagan, EVERY US president after FDR has been a FUCKING War Monger MORON!!!!!
putinblood 1 year ago
@putinblood .
ReduceGHGs 1 year ago
@ReduceGHGs On the Border issue, it's NOT to stop flow of illegal immigrants, more like LIMIT it. I agree with your points on Reagan, but again it's NOT just him, EVERY US president (after FDR) have done every possible way to ruin the country's world image and economy, too focused on building war machines to defend it's political interest at the expense of other countries. Capitalism is what actually works well for the rich, "Reaganomics" just pushed that to the extreme.

I love how Reagan says the government is "over-fed," and he facilitated one of the largest expansions of government in our country's history.
Did he think the military doesn't count as government?
seltian 2 years ago
Reagan was a great speaker, and I am very much close politically to the sort of ideas he espoused in 1980.
Unfortunately after he was shot in 1981, GHW Bush pretty much became the de facto president.
It wasn't just the military that grew in the 1980s, however in the late 70s a the Soviets had gained a destabilising nuclear advantage that had to be closed
disamjisa 1 year ago
@disamjisa Then let me correct myself: the Reagan Administration facilitated one of the largest expansions of government in US history.
I accept that the process began before Reagan, that Carter started much of what Reagan finished. But Reagan can't accuse the Democrats of over-feeding the government while he (or his administration) is doing that even more so.
A nuclear advantage is meaningless. It would only take a few hundred nuclear weapons to destroy humanity. No one needed to close it
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian yeah, well Reagan is much better than any president we have had so far, so stuff it
RyZombie619 1 year ago
@RyZombie619 Oh yeah? How so? What did Reagan do that was so great?
Huge debt? Screwing the poor? Mass murder? This is the legacy of the man who was "much better than any president we have had"
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian mass murder? do you have any sources to back this up or are you just going to keep spewing crap out and just claim its all facts? and screwing the poor? the poor are screwed no matter what, it didnt take reagan for them to be screwed. huge debt? and clinton, bush and obama havent made the debt even worse than its ever been?
RyZombie619 1 year ago
Again, Clinton did not make the debt worse. He worked with Congress, with both Democrats and Republicans, to balance the budget.
Mass murder resulted from many of Reagan's oversees activities. Reagan's role was indirect, but he still holds partial responsibility. These include:
the aid to the Contras, spurring on a war that killed 30,000 people
giving chemical weapons to Iraq, which were used to kill thousands of civilians
embargoing Yugoslavia and Nicaragua, causing starvation and death
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian since when hasnt a president made the debt even worse than it already is? and i believe bush, clinton, bush 2 and now obama all have us involved in a bigger war than reagan did, in fact, reagan did not even have our military involved in a full scale war. quit talking out your ass and come up with credible statements.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
Clinton worked to pay off the debt. Under Clinton, we had the first balanced Federal budger since 1969. He made up for the deficits that Reagan and Bush the Elected gave us.
Reagan did not directly take our country to war. But he bombed lots of people and financed smaller wars by puppet states. He also embargoed leftist nations (Nicaragua, Yugoslavia), leading to economic collapse, starvation, and death.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian so what? every president finances a country to fight a war. and what about presidents that do not get involved and help when genocide is being committed, like, hmm, i dont know, Jimmy Carter when Idi Amin was leader of Uganada, or when Stalin was in charge of the USSR, why dont we make the case that Carter was a murderer then too because he didnt not help 300,000 Ugandans from being slaughtered?
RyZombie619 1 year ago
I accept that just about every American president was a mass murderer. I never claimed otherwise.
My only point about Reagan is that he was a particularly nasty one. Reagan, Nixon, and Truman were probably the three most aggressive, pro-war, militant presidents we've ever had.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian oh really? What about Lyndon Johnson, James Knox Polk (if you even know who that is), and Andrew Jackson? Andrew Jackson was a huge supporter of injustices on Native Americans, hence the Trail of Tears. Polk was for sweeping across the West and taking California, Arizona, Texas, etc, hence the Mexican-Ameican War.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
yes, i do know who James K. Polk was. Let's stick to arguments, not insults.
They were all murderers. I'm not denying that.
In terms of sheer numbers, though, Reagan killed more.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian And Lyndon Johnson was responsible for the mass murder of Vietnamese during the Vietnam War by sending mass amounts of American troops there. So, honestly, Lyndon Johnson has probably killed more people than Reagan, Truman and Nixon combined. Johnson wanted the Vietnam War badly, one of the reasons he did not get along well with Kennedy who was not so pro war.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
@seltian yeah and we went to war with Kosovo under Clinton, went into Somalia under Clinton, fired missiles into the Sudan killing many civilians under Clinton. And Clinton financed many wars, as did Reagan, Bush, Bush Jr. Nixon, Johnson, Kennedy, etc. There is never a president who does not finance some sort of military escapade, so get off your high horse and realize that. most of the wars in American history were started under the leadership of a democrat president.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
Never did I claim that liberals/Democrats are any less pro-war than conservatives/Republicans.
The other two nasty mass-murdering presidents that I named were Truman (a Democrat) and Nixon (a liberal Republican). And some of the most anti-war activists (Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan) are conservatives.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian So don't come here and say Reagan was one of the most pro war Presidents we ever had, seeing that we never got involved in a full scale war during his 8 years in office, I think the evidence speaks for itself. Lets see, who is more pro war? Lyndon Johnson who threw hundreds of thousands of American troops into a war no one wanted to fight, or Reagan who did not get involved in a war?
RyZombie619 1 year ago
As I understand, Nixon killed far more Vietnamese than Johnson. Johnson mainly sent troops to Vietnam (which was bad, but at least troops can discriminate between civilians and combatants). Nixon bombed their major cities. Bombing is far less discriminate than sending in soldiers.
seltian 1 year ago
Again, sending in soldiers is not the only, and not even the worst, pro-war action. As I said, bombing can be far worse, because it doesn't discriminate against civilian targets. So can an embargo, for it starves innocents to death.
So can providing funding and weapons to another's troops (as Reagan did for the Contras, for Iraq, and for al-Queda).
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian u want to talk about bombing? ok, great u support my argument with Johnson. Kennedy withdrew 1,000 troops in 1963 before he was killed, Johnson then expanded the war right after. The Tet Offensive occurred during Johnson's term, not Nixons and the majority of attrocities were commited during Johnson's term and the napalm attacks were more frequent during Johnson's term, I believe it was Nixon who got most of our troops out of Vietnam.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
@seltian And Johnson had more people bombed than Reagan, in fact Clinton had more people bombed than Reagan. So Reagan provided weapons to Al Qaeda, so what? We were not the only ones funding Al Qaeda. And honestly, war in general does not avoid civilians. You want to know how many German women were raped during World War 2? Over 2 million. Why? Because that is what war is. Bombing is not the only thing that hurts civilians in war, even ground assaults hurt.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
I didn't say that bombing is the only thing that hurts civilians. You're missing my point entirely. I said that bombing is worse than deploying troops because troops have the ABILITY to discriminate between civilians and soldiers, explosions do not.
Nixon eventually got the troops out (because of Watergate), but bombing was intensified, and it was Nixon who invaded Cambodia and bombed that.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian So don't talk about war and how bombing is the worst aspect of war, there is no worst aspect of war, it is all terrible. And it does make a difference if we did not get involved in a war. When we get involved in a war, we bomb, we invade and we destroy which is what we did in Iraq, we did not do that with Reagan. Can you name countries that our Air Force bombed during the Reagan administration? Any wars? I am curious.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
"So Reagan provided weapons to Al Qaeda, so what? We were not the only ones funding Al Qaeda."
That's SUCH a good defence. Because other people were doing it, that makes it okay.
Sure, Reagan bombed Libya. And we funed plenty of wars (Contra war, Iraq-Iran war, etc.). We didn't land troops there, but we provided the money and weapons that kept these wars going.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian no it doesnt make it ok, but u dont bash those people, you are ignorant and hypocritical and u point the finger at one out of many who do this stuff, that is where my beef with u is, and your lack of evidence.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
@seltian
The Reaganites did attack Libya but it was humiliated in Lebanon and chose to stand down vs Syria and Iran. For eight years they talked tough against Hezbollah', Islamic Jihad (in truth, they didn't even know the difference between them) but did next to nothing. Afghanistan looked good but, ahem....
lumpagogo 1 year ago
@seltian I am curious, not funded but involved personally, can you name any, and I want sources from credible people, don't give me something like "oh well, this college student or wel this guy who made this film" No, I want credible, scholarly sources.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
Funding is involving personally. If I provide guns for a mob boss, and he goes and massacres people, and I knew that was going to happen, I definitely carry some responsibility for what happened.
Reagan also embargoed countries (economic warfare). Our embargoes on Yugoslavia and Nicaragua had devastating effects on the populations.
seltian 1 year ago
@seltian Lyndon Johnson is a murderer for our long overdue involvment in Vietnam, Kennedy for the Bay of Pigs invasion and for early missions in Vietnam. Nixon and Vietnam too, see, you can point to just about any president in the last 100 years and say they had a hand in some sort of killing, so to point at Reagan and say he was the only one is hypocritical and shows your ignorance.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
@seltian And also, that does not make someone a mass murderer, you need to understand what that word means cause you obviously dont. Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong, Ghenghis Khan, Nero, Idi Amin, those were mass murderers, not Ronald Reagan, lol, my god, i can believe I even have to defend that.
RyZombie619 1 year ago
Re the progressivity of taxes, Reagan smashed the progressivity after getting re-elected in the 1986 tax bill.
I like how Reagan was grilled about poverty toward the end of this video, especially the plight of the working poor!
ComradeSephiroth 2 years ago
With regard to Reagan's spiel on tax cuts being equitable across the board. In 1986 there was a bait-and-switch; another round of tax cuts that brought the top bracket all the way down to 28 percent and it was flat from about $30,000 all the way up ($60,000 in today's inflation terms). So as soon as Reagan got re-elected he went to work butchering the tax system's progressivity.
ComradeSephiroth 2 years ago
WRONG....the 1986 tax bill was a tax INCREASE on my "rich" people because it eliminated hundreds of tax-loopholes enjoyed by the ultra-wealthy (loopholes put in by Democrats and benefiting mostly wealthy leftists). So some people have termed his 1986 tax cut as a huge tax inctrease. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

@IFloridaMotocrossI You're so full of shit.

@IFloridaMotocrossI Bush won Florida by a little over 500 votes. The 2004 election was not rigged. Check outside your window for black helicopters.

@mrblujet
The dip-chad votes were not counted when they should have been, which would have went in Gore's favor. The Supreme Court and Republican representatives in Florida rode this process along.
I already described what happened in 2004. Although Bush didn't directly rig the elections, you get what I mean.
IFloridaMotocrossI 1 year ago
@IFloridaMotocrossI Just to satisfy my own curiousity, do you believe that the Nixon-Kennedy vote back in 1960 was rigged?
mrblujet 1 year ago
@mrblujet
I don't know much about it.
IFloridaMotocrossI 1 year ago
@IFloridaMotocrossI You have never read nor heard about Nixon losing Illinois to Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election due to questionable votes?
My point being is that you are arguing Bush stole the 2000 election because a bunch of dip-shits in Florida either didn't punch out their chad correctly or voted for the wrong individual because they didn't know how to read a ballot.
The 1960 Presidential election was flat-out stolen from Nixon because of rigged votes.
mrblujet 1 year ago
@mrblujet

Check out the popular vote. Bush rigged Florida.

thats why they need to get rid of the electoral college in pres elections. just let the people decide. yet no one comes up with that as a actually issue that needs attention

Dem and Repub highriders as a monolith compare favorably to the Inner Party as scrupously defined in "1984."
lumpagogo 2 years ago

All this blather about Presidents and their effect on the economy is actually silly - it's the private Federal Reserve that makes the big decisions.

I realize this goes against conventional wisdom.
lucki39284 2 years ago
Huh? Yeah it does go against conventional wisdom in the same way that thinking that the sun revolves around the Earth goes against conventional wisdom. Please tell me you're joking! Otherwise, take your meds and go back to sleep.

Anybody in their RIGHT mind knows that other than his foreign policy that Reagan was not a genius in economics. NO REPUBLICAN IS!

Never said he was, so stop putting words in my mouth you disgusting moron. It's 2009 now, and Obama's already screwed us beyond comprehension with his stimulus package and trillions in debt. Do you even think before you post??
