This glitch works anywhere there's a wall, even in Saffron City. It's not reccomended in most places though (Saffron City, Peach's Castle, or Hyrule) because of stage hazards (Hyrule's tornado, Saffron's Pokemon garage, Peach's Castle.. movnig floor)

You could also go to Sector Z.

And M and L aren't really getting bigger or smaller, they're moving toward or farther away from the screen. It makes sense then, Glitchmaster, that they can hit each other when they're the same size: they can actually reach one another.

this works with mario or luigi:

when you do a tornado attack (Down+B) tap B quickly

if you do well, mario or luigi could do a higher jump than the regular way, plus you can still use Up+B (Up,Up,Up+B)

To clear up a few things...

They don't get bigger/smaller, they move in the third dimension, AKA towards or away from the camera. This is noticeable if you move the other character (player 2) to the side (which moves the camera.)

The "size" change is not canceled by walking/running, however, you will shrink while not rolling, and jumping will return you to normal instantly.

This has no effect on hitboxes/hurtboxes, so people can still hit you as normal, and vice-versa.

To unlock this stage (Mushroom Kingdom,) you must complete 1-player mode with all 8 starting characters (everyone but Luigi, Ness, Jigglypuff, and Captain Falcon.)

Rolling right=closer, left=farther.

To my knowledge, it DOES work on the real N64, which means that it isn't due to PJ64's video plugins being bugged. Also, although I'm personally too lazy to test, it seems to be only Mario and Luigi who have the small bit of 3rd-dimensional movement in their back roll that causes this.

Technically speaking, he is. Instead of the 2D X and Y axis, he is actually moving through the Z axis, meant solely for camera control. But still, he is only moving through the vector, so if he moves, automatically Mario goes back from, lets say, point +9, to the default coordinate.
