Thanks, have you tried 'silent cycling' using live plants? I'm thinking of trying it. Apparently this way there is no need to add ammonia or fish food, there are no ammonia spikes as the plants take care of that, and the fish are added later on, when the levels are safe, although the down side is it takes a while longer!
is TopFin dechlorinator okay? and I'm doing aquarium salt treatments in separate containers 100% water changes everyday for 10 days, I was recommended to do that.
@cashn100 If it removes Chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals it's fine, but I just personally prefer a product like Prime that removes those things and also neutralizes Ammonia, Nitrites and some Nitrates while helping with slime coat. But anything that removes Chlorine is fine. Are you doing Salt dips for accute Nitrite poisoning? if not, that's really all it's good for when it comes to cycling. Remember your main tank needs water changes the most but never more than 50% on a daily basis.
Question if I might, I was in the process of setting up a 30 gallon tank, I had a brand new in the box filter, it didnt work, so Ill need to go to the pet store this weekend, and replace it, in the mean time the 30 gallon is setting ,full, no fish, nothing in it but an air bubbler. The water is starting to take on a semi cloudy appearance, no fish food or anything added.
@redtagman1000 Nope, no need to drain it. Just make sure that you have added the right amount of de-chlorinator/ water conditioner to start off. The cloudy water usually means a beneficial bacterial bloom. This is a good thing and means that the cycle is starting.
@redtagman1000 : ammonia is now maxed out and Nitrates are at .5 , , bought fake plants at Walmart Friday, they're now in place, finish cycling and Im ready for my gold fish.
I have a divided 10 gallon tank for 2 Bettas, I messed up on cycling the tank /: I have the fishes in the tank right now & they both seem depressed always at the bottom or top of the tank. one of them got fin rot, what do you think I should do about the cycle? take them out the tank? and the fin rot too? as much advice you can give me would be best (: please get back to me, thank you
@cashn100 Well the best thing for you to do right now is to change 50% of the water with dechlorinated and conditioned tap water with Prime or Stress Coat Plus. Fin rot usually comes about when the water quality is low. If you can, it would be best to also get liquid testing kits for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate so you can see where your aquarium is in the cycle. Most likely you will need to perform 50% water changes on a daily basis especially until your fish heals from the fin rot.
Excellent Job on THIS! Very clear, and thorough explanation.

quick question where does the first set of bacteria come from ?
seanlid123 2 months ago
@seanlid123 The bacteria is naturally in the water, but the ammonia allows a mass colonization.

Did you ever do the water testing video, just wondering,.......peace
By the way, my 30 gallon now has a good 40 gallon filter, the ammonia has started climbing, but its only been one week.

@redtagman1000 ok ammonia has dropped .5 and nitrites are still .5 (?) , nitrates are still zero.
Water hardness is max at 300 , alkalinity is max 300 , and ph is maxed at 8.4. Is the last three normal to be this high? and are they a problem??
