Got to agree with the comment about never knowing this song was about Mickey Mouse breasts on T-shirts. That picture was weird. Always loved Art's version of this song, though; so thanks for posting.
I'm all for cover versions but sorry Art, all the changes made here are for the worse. I guess BW is such a perfectionist there is no room for improvement.
@peetludlow not a Brian Wilson song, my friend, but written by the underrated genius Bruce Johnston. I think Art does a great job here, he always has this kind of melancholy in his voice. Thanks for posting, jokarilon.
@michieljansen57 You're right of course, a BJ song, but I think if you're going to change a few chords, do it to improve, not to simplify. I take your point about the voice though.
This is a beautiful song about a time of childhood innocence, and the video was completely ruined by adding the picture of the tramps from MardiGras with their "Micky boobs"....WALT DISNEY WOULD NOT APPROVE and neither do I!
This is my second favourite version, after Bruce Johnston's solo performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
The Beach Boys' version is too "sleepy" but that was down to Bruce's production. I wasn't alive during their dominance but they stand alone as the most i-n-n-o-v-a-t-i-v-e band ever ..... imo.
@Vip3rAce "billions of light years ahead" is a gross overstatement and a joke. but if you're taking all the beach boys vs all the beatles then yeah, beatles are ahead for sure. but if you're just taking wilson, mccartney, lennon, then no. those three were right with each other.
Hey guys, we've got similar stories here, one of my favorites too, when I was in college ( we could be classmates ha ha ha), and studiebaker, its DZMB, used to listen to that FM station too before.
I completely agree. The Beach Boys didn't do justice to this song as much as they should have. Only Bruce singing solo brings this emotion to it. Amazing lyrics which could explain Art's decision to cover the song.
to hannibalQueen666 : we have more or less the same story on this song. Brings back a lot of memories so many years ago in the Philippines when it was played in an FM station ( DZBM if I remember correctly ). I was then in college also.
I've been looking for this song for 30 years. I finally hearing it again it reminds me when I was in College. I was only a freshman student when this song became so popular in the Philippines and then my family migrated to North America and never heard it again until now. Thank you so much for uploading this song it brings back a lot of memories.
Now, people. I read this as a totally ironic song about Disney-plastic denial. It's a peaceful life, but only if you go to this fantasy world--"reality/ is not for me." Pretty, yes. But real--it would be pretty to think so.
of course, he does in every song he sings... you're cute, lol!! well, you know... i mean not on this particular song. i didn't expect him to sing it this well... but art even surpassed the excellence of the capt. and the wife in this particular song. thanks for your nice comment. i, too, like art. friends?
I don't have any of it because sadly I lost my entire record collection when I got divorced, every single one - even my War of the Worlds that you bought me :(
jokarilon thanks for this package many sweet memories its this sort of stuff that makes you tube work by the way who do you reckon done the whistling?
trfesok (see his/her comment 4 months ago) said, "The whistling on three versions (Beach Boys, Captain and Tenille and this one) is done by Bruce Johnston!"
No biggie. I jumped a little too hard. You actually did a very nice job editing that video. You gotta have an eagle-eye to even notice it. I thought you sort of knowingly "slipped" the pic in there. It's fine. I didn't mean to be that critical. Quite frankly, the only reason I noticed it is because a while back, someone e-mailed me that pic as a novelty.
"Pulverises" The Beach Boys version? Hahahahaha! How silly. It's a nice version but Garfunkle's voice is much thinner than Johnson's and compared to Bruce,Art is singing like a man singing someone else's song.Which he is. The definitive version is The Beach Boys version. Period.
You don't think that the production values on the Beach Boys original are a little rough? Or the arrangement on the AG version and especially the musicianship leave the orginal standing? Granted, Johnson's voice is great.
Thanks so much for putting this together, it's an exquisite song. Although the images I see when I hear this song are different to those you chose, it is cool to see yours. Its so poignant, this song, it moves me every time. Thanks!!!
I have a Beachboys recording of this song but had never heard Art Garfukel's version until now - he has the voice of an angel. So - thanks for making this available - lovely pictures. I always regarded it as a very beautiful song with a definite sting! Thanks for posting.

It should be pointed out that the "Disney girl" shot shows the blonde wearing the mouse shirt with the mice and noses in very interesting positions.

Great version but no one can do the harmonies on 'Church Bingo Chances & Old Time Dances' like the Beach Boys.
STEVWATSON 3 years ago 5
It simply pulverises the Beach Boy's original. Smashies it to smitherines which say a lot.
AMERICANA AT IT'S BEST.
Up there with Gershwin et al. It's that good. Sublime.
