While the law says parents don't have to be involved in a decision to have an abortion, they most certainly will be involved if something goes wrong during that abortion and further medical treatment is needed. At that point, parents will be billed for medical expenses amounting to thousands or more, while the "clinic" quickly packs up and disappears. In the meantime, that compulsory school will be waving the medical waver parents were required to sign.
Isn't it true that if the school takes your kid to get an abortion (without the consent or knowledge of the parents) and they have complications after and bleed to death it's the parents responsibility?
Get your basic facts straight. The school didn't take her to have an abortion, the clinic did. And parents would be billed for complications after birth too (way more complicated than any abortion, mind you).
This was an incredibly kind and selfless act on the schools part considering the ridicule they received during the few months this made national headlines. I am honored to attend a high school that believes and actively participates in the development of student intellect.
As a Ballard High School senior I can tell you that the Teen Health Center contract which you (the parent), DON'T HAVE TO SIGN, clearly states that the school has a strong student-school privacy contract that should be understood and respected by the parent(s) and student who are signing the contract. Also, as it was previously stated the school did not give the abortion, they only laid out the facts in front of the girl so she could decide on what to do with her situation.
This is such a typical one-sided fox view of a situation that had been thought over carefully by many people working in Ballard High School's Teen Health Center. The mother of this girl should know if she is sexually active and talk with her about the risks of unprotected sex.
fox news doesn't have their facts straight. The school didn't give the abortion, it is a clinic owned by a local hospital with separate employees. In the state of Washington students get to make their own decisions regarding sexual stuff. I despise the one-sidedness of Fox news. conservative pricks
.... its better than the alternative. in my opinion its better to have an abortion and stay in school and try to live a normal life rather than have a baby and drop out. i mean her mother is making a big deal outta this. its like crying over spilled milk.
That black lady is blowing my mind. She thinks it's messed up for a ten-year-old to get an abortion, which it is. But it would be more messed up for a ten-year-old to be forced to gestate. I'll never understand anti-choice women.
@RedDollShoes I agree with you. Parents shouldn't have any say over the raising of their kids. Once they are born then the kids should be raised by the state and the parents can just go back to making more kids.
@bpentium haha i dont think soo...the state wouldnt give you any love, would they? and why should they?? theres this great thing called family, thats incredibly beautiful if done right.
@RedDollShoes are you serious?? u know... these children are young. im young, and i know i couldnt make a decision like that by myself! young people, numerous studies show, dont have fully developed brains and sometimes make stupid decisions, especially under pressure...so i think parents should be involved..
I agree, it is fucked up. And notice the flagrant hypocrisy that there is no parental consent needed to give birth, which is WAY more dangerous than any abortion. Can't trust them to choose an abortion, but yeah we can trust them to give brith to and raise a kid, right?
Looks like things have gotten interesting at my old high school. Funny thing is I'd know the people who decided this. You'd think they'd have enough political sense not to mess around with abortion. But then again I'm not surprised, Ballard is very into the health of its students.
As far as ethics and what not I can't give a view. Not enough characters to express either dissent or approval.
smh i go to this school..........

Parents would be billed for complications during birth too (which are way more likely than during any abortion). What's your point?

@j0th Calling abortion "development of student intellect" is like calling what Hitler did "crowd control."

It's so fucked up that parents can legally prevent their children from getting abortions. So incredibly fucked up....

Why isn't there any parental involvement mandated for giving birth then? Hm?
Funny how those kids with undeveloped brains that make stupid decisions can't be trusted with a choice, but can be trusted with raising a child XD
