So what he is saying is "The people of this state have no say in the matter. Whoever the few people in the state/federal court choose for the state is all that matters." to which I say that Minnesota's election is no more democratic than the Iranian election.
Our courts = Iranian clerics. The voice of the people is being silenced by the choices of the higher ups.
"Our courts = Iranian clerics, Minnesota's election is no more democratic than the Iranian election." If you think that then why are you not out on the streets dieing to have your voice heard in Minnesota? Could it be that they are not the same and you're making a stupid point on youtube?
Could it be that I don't give a shit about Minnesota and that nobody else is outraged enough to follow a random YouTube comment poster into the streets?
The point I was making is that the situation is similar. People voted. Somebody won. Then the courts ended up decided who got to be leader.
the entire country knows al franken won the election (how many re-counts do we need), yet the minnesota state government continues to try and block him from taking his seat in senate.
we are going on 7 months now . . . how long does it take to count ballots??
pay me hundreds of thousands of dollars and i would have it done within a week; 100% accurate . . . whats the holdup?
when the whole minnesota senate ordeal is done, i cant wait to see al franken go head-to-head against michelle bachman in national issues. that will be priceless
The feds should stay out of it! It's Minnesota's elections so it's none of their business. Bush V. Gore, That was to decide who the leader of our country would be. So it was the federal election. Also keep in mind how these court cases get paid for and that is through tax payer dollars. I live in New Jersey and I don't wanna have to pay taxes just so Minnesota can have it's second senator.
He is digging deep with this decision to leave MN unrepresented (well they do have 1 in the Senate) for 7 months. I hope that other states have a means to resolve a contested election without dragging the count and the vote out this long.
Did Congress get the laws right after 2000 or could that nightmare happen to a presidential election again?
ScarletteKnights, You are right, It is Minnesota, The same folks who voted for Michelle Bachman. Leaving them without representation in Washington is their problem. 1% Less pork in the budget is a start. As long as the people of MN Tolerate this crap they deserve it.
This is not reaffirming anything at all. he's left himself a dozen 'outs'. we know damn well that coleman is capable of taking it to the supreme court, therefore pawlenty has just said he's not planning on signing anything unless he's forced to.
What are the chances the Supremes will step in - at all?
For the most part*, they operate on the basis of THEIR CHOICE of cases that are brought before them. IOW, they deliberate among themselves in advance of a case being brought, and can decide to NOT hear it.
* Wouldn't be surprised if there were exceptions. Please neglect to enlighten me as to specifics.
The rationale was that it was for national office, so the Supreme Court could rule on it. But, Bush v. Gore exists in a legal limbo, because the opinion states that it is not to be used as precedent.
You do know that Pawlenty is a Republican, right? If Coleman was ruled the winner by the panel of judges reviewing the recount, Pawlenty might have signed the certificate then, even if Franken appealed.
Who votes means nothing. Who counts the votes means everything Stalin.

the whole issue is so stupid.

Perhaps. However, on the other hand, it's a state election to a Federal post, and each state is Constitutionally guaranteed two Senators.
But yeah, I understand what you mean.

Trying to cover his butt with the GOP base. They know Frankin is the Senator, but they want to keep him out of DC for as long as possible. How petty?

Shameless this bastard has let this go on for so long. Thank God this hopefully won't continue into August.

In this clip, Pawlenty DOES NOT say he will sign the certificate. He has NEVER said he will sign the certificate.
He says here that he will sign the certificate IF ORDERED to do so by the Supreme Court. This is what he has always said.
If the Supreme Court decision does not include a specific order for Pawlenty to sign, he WILL NOT sign.

This is a states rights matter and should remain within the state.

The Supreme Court would never step into election issues, because, under the Constitution, elections are a "states rights" matter.
