Broken axles are a frustrating type of annoyance, especially if it was due to a transverse fissure inside, which is hard to detect without scanning equipment. Now if it was a wheel that dislodged itself from an axle, that would be easier to determine during the investigation.
The reports keep claiming that the derail was an act of vandalism. Apparently, this is at a bad part of town. Kids playing with the switches. Won't know for a year or two the exact cause is.
