  • haha nice makeup :) and your preety :)

  • i admire ur strenght ...

  • You go, girl.

  • i love your style! my mother had cancer as well its a hard thing to go through much love and success to you! :)

  • Wow, I can relate! I was thin my entire life until my mid 20's when I started to gain weight. I worked a boring job. Nordstrom was a block away so l would go there to play with makeup often. I became obsessed. It made me feel pretty. I bought more than I could spend and ended up returning things. I even got in trouble for returning too many products. My war paint was literally a cover up of my emotions. I have now lost the weight and use makeup to express myself. Thanks for sharing your story.

  • You are a true inspiration from your story of fighting a disease to you pulling yourself out of a dark corner and becoming who are today. You are living proof that people can grow and be strong simply by being positive and seeing the depth of life not just what is on the the surface. You are an amazing person and a wonderful YES MAKEUP ARTIST! You are a PRO!

  • This was beautiful, really made me tear up. I love your life perspective, very cool.

  • I love your style ;)

  • I am glad you are here and have made it through your trails. You are a beautiful person Risa!! And blessed with a great talent that you share with the world!!! Don't worry about foolish people that judge. They are sad souls who still have to work on themselves. Take care love...I will continue to watch and support you 100%!!

  • ...and i do something that is way more natural and brings out my natural beauties or don`t wear it and i feel beautiful either way. I started judge girls who (and still admit i kinda still do) wore lots of makeup and thought they were insecure and felt sorry for them and i wanted to tell them they would be better off without it. I guess this vid taught me that yes people might be insecure without it but they might just like the expression they get with it. thanks

  • Hi i am cathy I am a teen and who was always known for that (when i was younger) little girl who got into mommy`s makeup. haha. Of course i was never aloud to wear outside the house till middle school. In the middle of my junior high years i did the average black eyeliner thing. I would take it off and hate to see what i saw in the mirror. when ppl wear to much makeup they look washed out w/out it. i decied that wont be me. i stopped wearing makeup for a while.i got back into it and...

  • You honestly amaze me... seriously you are so strong and your story inspires me to quite being the stupid teenage girl who cares so much and to just give up my "image" of what i want people to view me as but to just be me!

    So thank you!

  • I agree with you about makeup and the process of applying makeup. It is the act of focusing on the face, taking that few quiet minutes in every day to do something creative, that is so therapeutic. Having to live with a body that is falling apart as you did really makes one aware of how inconsequential appearances are, it's expressing your inner self that leads to happiness. I love your videos, you are really very talented.

  • Hi dear Risa, you've touched me deep with you're story. And you're só right,if you're beautiful inside it's more important as only the outside.Make up must be fun,and i'm glad you look at it the same way.We women/girls just wanna have fun with it.You look great dear,i love this look a lot. Thanks for this honest story about you.Respect!! xox

  • Thank you for sharing your story; it was very moving. And I totally agree with you. There is no one way that we're supposed to look. Image is really all an illusion and is not what matters at the end of the day. While makeup, clothes, hair, etc. are forms of self-expression, they do not accurately reflect who you are or the true depth of a person. I have actually heard girls call other girls sluts just for wearing a lot of makeup. Ridiculous!!

  • Thanks for sharing =D

  • wow, how strong are you! for you to come on here all the time and show us how to make our selves feel better with make up, and to put yourself out there the way you have, and to admit that you dont care if someone doesnt think ur make up looks natural, if u like it thats what matters, wow! that is the best thing i have heard on here yet! i love anyone who can just love the skin they are in no matter who says what! you are amazing in so many ways! love love love you!!

  • I love your chain ;o) bbox

  • oOO ur makeup looks dope in here!!

  • you are amazing risa.

what ever you choose to do to make your spirit better and stronger is the only thing that matters.

  • ive noticed that ironically...a lot of makeup artists have image issues, which is probably why they get into that industry in the first place, similiar to how a lot of physical trainers have body issues...

  • I think U r very brave person. Thank U for share your ideas with us :)

  • Well Said! We are quick to judge but not quick to compliment.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure you have touched several people, I know you've touched me.

  • You're a beautiful person - Physically and spiritually.

  • i so love your message in this vid.

  • great video i also have luekemia it is mds which never goes away , and it is slow to well kill me but at least i can be alive,

  • your story is amazing and you should maybe go and do something at the hospitals or something that would be really cool. keep going ill pray for you all the way

  • i love this girl

  • Happy human beings are first of all capable of living in a peaceful relationship with themselves. In most cases, values and norms that are given to us by society harm our personal happiness ......................

Thanks I like yore personality just be yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like you a lot. You kick ass. xoxo

  • I just love love you.

  • Like ive said before you are an inspiration a true Muse keep being true to yourself the world needs more people like you! Thanks !

  • I really wish this could be a commercial. There are so many young girls that would benefit from hearing this. It should be played on tv, train stations, malls, anywhere young people hang out. The message is beyond positive!

  • you are a surviver you go girl nothhing is in your way

  • It's wonderful to see you are as beautiful on the outside as you are inside too... The world has a lot to learn from people like you... =^.^=

  • I don't wear makeup because otherwise I feel ugly, I just have a passion for it, and it's fun for me. I totally understand what you're saying, but being a 14 year old, I wanted to share that.

  • Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I think you're make up looks beautifull!!

  • I wanted to mention how much your story touched me. I'm waiting for a call from my boyfriend in jail to tell me how far his cancer has spread, & he's only 24. It is such a long & scary road ahead of us & to see someone so beautiful and amazing as you be so deeply knowledgeable and healthy and just alive even is such a hope for me that everything will be okay and in time everything will be better. Thank you for being so open, just sharing your story is beyond words.

  • i love your creativity! i'm not as bold and daring as you, but i love all the ideas you give me! hope you keep the vids coming, and if you come across some great products don't forget to share with the rest of the class. LOLOLOL

  • your an amazing person

  • We have the same philosophy. And that's something really hard for most people to understand and GET because they consider makeup as a way to beautify themselves FIRST and FOREMOST..whereas we see it as an ART FIRST. I way of expression. Our face is our canvass. Some draw on paper we use our face and it feels good to be creative.

  • Inspirational. I wish I had ur strength. I've had fibromyalgia for 3 years and I feel like not being in this world . I'm only 27 . And I feel like ive been here way 2 ling. God bless

  • Bravo. Well said, great video. <3

  • cannot believe you're 28! wow but guess you are hehe..just like my boyfriend : he is the same age and looks wayyy younger..

  • you are so strong LOVE YOU SOO MUCH HUN!

  • I really love this. You really are an amazing artist. I love make-up and cant leave the house without at least powder on but still its good to hear when people say they dont NEED it.

So Point of this comment is to say how amazing i think you are. and that you can do anything. I mean you lived through cancer! Hahaa...well thats not really funny but yeah. You will defintly make it.

    :3

  • Very well said! Love your channel!!!

  • very well said! you're inspiring and a true artist -- it definitely shines through. i really enjoy your channel!

  • UR SO BEAUTIFUL:)

  • Hey Lady, take this from a past cosmetologist. You've done an excellent job on your make up. You do not look like a drag-Q. Someone jealous must have said that about you. In my opinion you could easily pass for a professional model. Keep up the good work and I look forward to checking out some of your tutorials. Be blessed!

  • That's exactly the way I think! Thank you sooooo much for this video! Warm regards from Germany ;)

  • I appreciate your philosophy!

  • risa your such a strong and beautiful girl . your philosophy is wonderful . your truely and inspiration to be happy with your inner self and not to care about what people think . speaking of art therapy its what i plan on majoring in during college and that really got to me . god bless and stay strong.

  • I completely agree with you Risa you are beautiful and you have a beautiful soul =) if someone wants to wear a bright colour on there eyes let them its not about hey you look, but if i did that my mom would kill me she lets me wear makeup to school but only friggen neturals but i like colours XD xD

  • I agree. I personally think of makeup as an art and don't really care if something looks natural or whatever. I think it should be fun and not a necessity.

  • risa u are #1 FIERCE in makeup and GORGEOUS so girl i don't know whose mirror u were looking in when u were insecure but many girls would die for your looks....#2 BLESS U (my friend passed from cancer last year) I am so glad you are healthy and doing this makeup... such an ARTIST i really appreciate your work

  • you are an inspiration. thank you :)

  • Your such an inspiration!=]

Your a great person and a great artist!=]

  • you should read Cancer Vixen

  • I also get comments with "drag queen"...just because I love color & dramatic stuff...I really don't care!!:))

I always say "oh well....they laughed at picasso" :))))

  • Risa, I had a very similar experience to you. I was fourteen (I am only fifteen now) when I got dangerously sick and was on medication that made me into a stick and had horrible side affects. I am just recovering my normal looks, and the same realisations that you made have come to me. I was in the hospital for months, and my consolation was my art, but I see exactly what you mean about finding solace in your makeup. Thank you for sharing: I could not have said it better myself.

  • Very well expressed!

    Thank you for sharing.

  • you are a beautiful person, and it emanates to your outer appearance

  • I can kind of relate to where your coming from. I'm 15 and am not very well.Thankfully, when i was tested for Leukemia,It was found I didn't have it.

Makeup and Art are things I'm very passionate about.

  • i think ur brave for sharing this with us. and ur videos are amazing

  • you're amazing and uber talented. You're so inspirational! Thanks for the vids! (Just ignore certain people. It's not your fault they're stupid. Because obviously you're telling your own story and giving information and those people just don't want to hear it or understand, making them stupid)

  • Maybe I should post my hospital videos. When my central line was infected. My ambulance ride. Because you know what, it's kind of a slap in the face and extremely disrespectful for anyone to question my honesty about something like this.

  • to all of the people calling her hypocritical, etc ... since when is there a rule that says you can't love yourself on the inside but still want to look pretty on the outside? they are not mutually exclusive. as a makeup artist, she is helping people feel better about themselves on the outside which hopefully, in turn, makes them realize their inner beauty as well. i love you, risa, you're incredible!

  • you remind me of fergie =)

youre very talented.. keep it up. youre an inspiration.

  • You don't need to prove anything or answer to someone like banilya. Your experience is your own, and people think you're bullshitting them, then screw them. Rock on sister!

  • yes true true but too bad that people only see your cover

  • how can you say that image is not important when you became miserable when you lost it?

  • She says that she realised image isn't important afterwards. When you go from looking pretty damn good to (no offence) pretty lousy you're going to feel awful. She's just trying to help people understand the importance of character instead of image faster and without certain events to change their minds. She's not being hypocritical.

  • The thing is, I understand why people can depend on wearing makeup. For me, when I did feel ugly and I was so wrapped up in image - yes it helped. But it was also theraputic in that - just like sketching on paper or a canvas, I put all my feelings and emotions onto my face (i did masks and a lot of "different" makeup during this time) The comfort for me came in yes, being able to cover my face sores - but moreso in the actual time spent creating art & using my face as a canvas. And correction...

  • I was NOT a makeup artist BEFORE I got sick. I pretty much wore sketch & stomp eyeshadow very poorly applied - every single day. It wasn't like I woke up and was like "OMG!! Image doesnt matter" It was a slow process over the course of 3 years - 2 of those - working for MAC. Do you understand what I'm getting at. And just because someone doesn't read books on Buddism doesn't mean they didn't take the spiritual route. I did both actually. Spirituality is something that you can pursue in your own

  • yes. i know that you became a makeup artist after your disease. what i dont get is that youre saying image is not important but you entered a job that focuses and improves the oustide beauty of a person. i know how important it is to be beautiful and im sure you do too despite what you've said. i have nothing against you being a make up artist but i do question your honesty in the things you say. dont take this as an attack, i am not a hater i just didnt agree with what you said in this video.

  • i entered the job while I was still going through chemo therapy actually. Image should not be important. It is not important to me. I do not value it. But most of our world does. And as women, we are raised to believe in image - an illusion. So am I just going to not apply makeup to people because I dont value image? No. I'd rather talk to people while I do their makeup, and tell them "you have beautiful skin - you dont need foundation" etc etc You have my whole personality twisted. If you care

  • to watch - check out my personal channel. Because if anything, I'm probably more honest and upfront than most people. Because my opinions are my own and frankly I don't care if people disagree with my opinions. I will not censor myself for anyones viewing pleasure...the same goes for makeup. If I feel like being creative - I'l wear makeup, but I'm not going to wear a mask of makeup and censor who I really am anymore because it IS an illusion. Does that make more sense to you?!

  • way, however you choose to do so. It's dealing with the spirit, period. Which is a very personal thing. The reason I only spoke about the makeup aspect is because, well this is my makeup channel lol and that is how I got into makeup.

  • Yeah, but in the video she said going through that process in her life and working at MAC made her realize that it shouldn't matter how much make-up you wear, those experiences were an eye opener for her.

  • That definitely wasn't the only reason I was miserable. Did you even watch my video? lol I basically said I became aware of how screwed up my priorities and values were.

  • lol, I didn't reply back to the first person, because I realised they weren't paying any attention. Wow, this is a long thread of replies and YT is screwed up so you have to hit "view all comments" to read them in order.

  • @MakeupByRisa SOmetimes ppl reply with out seeing the whole vid... and end up making asinine comments. Don't worry about it, girl!! Great vid, its very intimate & I applaud you for putting such sensitive, personal information on here so that we can know you better!!! Great Stuff. Its content like this that keeps me reading your blog & watching your vids.

  • ghetto!! <3 jk jk ily

  • that was so inspirational and sooo genuine! Fell in love with your personality!

  • this video was actually inspiring.. your story touched me.. i can relate too, even though i was never sick like that.

  • Amazing story! I have a lot of respect for you. To bad not all people think like you, looks are more important to people these days and I think that's sad. I also feel makeup is a way to express yourself, and I to get comments if I wear dark, but it fits me... and I don't care. My best friend says I look great with it, and that's what really matters to me.

  • You're story is awesome and I wish you many blessings. God bless deary!

  • I found you through Leesha *XSparkage and I'm glad I did. You're very talented and I hope you make it big. BTW, you're story is very inspirational. Hope it touches others. Be Blessed!

  • thats really inspiring!

  • You seem a truly wonderful, grounded, deep individual. Bravo for having such a great outlook on life. :)

  • Thanks for sharing! I saw you on petrilude's channel. You're so talented! :)

  • Loved this vid<3

  • I love how level-headed you are.

  • you're a beautiful inspiration darling <3 and you definitely have a knack for make-up and fashion =)

  • nice style.

  • I'm really glad you're ok with having Leukemia but at least you found you're love for makeup from it..an I totally agree about society being so obsessed with what people look like..it's really depressing cause I'm not fat but I'm not like skinny..and I feel so pressured to lose 5 pounds or if my eyeshadow isn't right since I do makeup then I don't know what I'm doing..so I'm glad you did this video =D

  • ur r soooo pretty....thanx for sharing ur story

  • All I have to say is I love you and your makeup is absolutely stunning!

  • I agree with you on your makeup - some of us however don't have your style :) I still am obsessed with looking and appreciating ... unfortunately makeup and I don't mix :)

  • u kinda look like fergie in the vid. from themy humps vid

  • exactly what I thought!

  • a Lot of women have that style, its not just Fergie's.

  • Great story, I can relate as a survivor and a disabled woman. I am of the faith of gratitude. Love who we are in every moment!!!!

  • you seem very sweet. i don't think there are many sweet people. and thats a shame.

  • i just wanted to say i think your great and i love your attitude and philosophy i wish more people would think like you cheesy i know but the world would be a better place. thanks for the message

  • you are soo right! i love your honesty!

and dont pay attention to what other people say about your make-up because it's beautiful and all those other people are just insecure. :)

  • Comment removed

  • luv your honesty and keep being you, i love people who aren't afraid to be themselves.

  • you are an absolute beautiful soul

  • i have felt the same way...thanks for a guru to post this personal story.

  • Please do a tutorial on red lips. Yours look amazing!

  • great story!

  • This is such a moving and inspirational story (:

  • i like you. you are very real. =)

  • I never knew about the Leukemia, and I'm so glad you were able to recover and overcome. I've lost two close friends to strange, rare forms of Leukemia in the past year. It's been a lot to deal with and no one seems to understand it. I'm so glad that you're happy and healthy.

  • do you have a tutorial for this look ?

very inspiring philosophy by the way.

  • Thank you for this video. I was just moping about something going on in my life and wished so much that people didn't focus so much on image. I feel a little better now, and I wanted to say that I appreciate you.

Now go forth and have warm fuzzies!

  • wow I love your philosophy... I think too many gurus don't make their philosophy known and in the process they encourage their viewers to feed their insecurities with make up and to obsess over make up in an unhealthy way...This video was so inspiring and so nice to watch!! Thank you!

  • You have the most amazing eyes!

    Thanks for the video!

  • You are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your story. I just found your channel today! I LOVE IT!!! I think you are so amazing and strong.

  • Amazing video...thank you so much for sharing this YOU ARE TRULLY BEAUTIFULL !!! God Bless You Tremendously!

  • I've always thought about that. Makeup is art. People take it too seriously when you go out of the boundaries. I started to get into makeup and got rude comments about how I can't do this or that.

I'm happy that I'm more comfortable and confident with a bare face. It took years to get to the point but it's such a better feeling than rushing to put a mask on.

I've seen many kids say "I look fat" and it's really screwed up. I've noticed some kiddie shows are going for a more mature audience.

  • your so pretty! :)

  • Truth is Beauty! Thank you for sharing and keeping it real.

  • you're amazing :)

  • Very Inspiring! You're beautiful!

  • great video love your look :) btw you dont look 28 lol you look young like 23 or something well i thought but yeah..thanx for sharing your story :)

its good to stay strong and be happy

  • Wow thank you for sharing your background, I agree that doing makeup is an art form and if more people saw it like that

they would not have time to throw negative comments @ others. Keep your head up girlie, GOOD JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lmao @ "now that i'm 28 i agree with her" i know just how you feel ;p except, well, im 20, but still

:C you are a very strong woman for going through this  i agree with what you say, your ideal and about society, agreeeeeeeeed

  • Way to go, Risa! :) Well said, lovely girl, well said.

  • Thank you Risa for this inspiring video. You are just an absolutely beautiful person inside and out. I adore makeup and love to experiment myself. You are a courageous person and my prayers are for your continuous well being through your trials. Greater gifts and blessings are destined for you.

  • Thank you for sharing this. Life is too short and it's up to us to live it to the fullest! You seem like a really amazing person!!

  • thank you so much for your backstory risa. xoxo

  • Thank you Risa for being so real and true. Peace

  • wow, what an amazing video and thank you for sharing your story! You are an incredibly courageous and beautiful woman. I agree with your philosophy one million percent, btw. Do yo thang, girl! xxoo

  • that was really eloquent, and i definitely agree about viewing makeup not as an obsession about image, but an art form.

    thanks for this!

  • Great video! BTW Love your lip color! I adore red lipstick!

  • Thank you for your courage. I agree that it's important to value someone's essence vs their appearances. I appreciate art and make up to me is like wearable art. Thank you for your honesty and your reflections have made me think of my own reasons for needing it. Perceptions do make the world go round. I don't agree with that. Make up is art and I think our face is a canvas, It is our canvas so we can do what we want with it,. Judge not, judge not, bless you :) you're hella cool!

  • i love watching your video and love your make up and who you are, risa!

  • I'me overweight and I know people judge me for that. But hey... it's only the way I look.

I'me trying te be an good doughter, friend co worker etc. I like who I ame and thanx for helping me remember this!!

I Love the things you do and hope te see lots more ...

    thanx for sharing your story!!

  • Thanks for this video. You are a true inspiration. Like you said, what matters is what's on the inside, not what people see. Make-up IS a form of art, of expression! People who judge you for the looks you create tend to be the superficial ones. Keep doing make-up. It's what has made you happy and helped you grow. It is something other people appreciate and learn from. So, again, thank you for this video :)
