hey wiz this machine is tight man sounds are just great do you suggest one of these for a first hardwhere synth? see im trying to get into the hardwhere synth world and was thinkin of gettin one these i mainly do urban production.
@FreestyleLilWayne The 1080 would make a fine first synth, although you'll also need a MIDI keyboard to play it with. Lots of great sounds, although it really is a 90's instrument.
Can someone tell me if a roland such as xp 30 or a jv 1080 or Juno Di when being part of a rock band , have they have more presence or punch in a mix than a Korg Triton or Korg tr ? Great video by the way!!
@sbatakki ......midi out on the keyboard to midi in on the rack. You can also assign a midi channel to each patch or preset which is great for using multiple sounds simutaneously in a track you are composing........drums etc!
The Roland JX-305 Groovesynth has the same sound engine as the JV-1080 but with extra sounds from the D-50 & more + extra abilities. For some reason people think the Roland JX-305 is a Roland MC-505 with keys. How wrong they are.
If you own a JX-305 compare the sound to the JV-1080 & D-50. Better still open up your machines & compare the sound board. ;)
Hey there friend, I bought the JV2080.. I like the sound patches you got.. I can deal with them.. I got it for 227.00 on Ebay.. 227 dollars on Ebay? this is awesome.. If this was only 1993, life would be soooo different music wise.. Thanks for inspiring me sir..
I have one huge nagging question. Cans filter cuttoff/resonance and amplitude attack/sustain/release be controlled directly through the oxygen out of the box? if not how can I set it up this way. I'm looking into getting one, but I'm not sure if GM is complient with GM2 standards. Are the MIDI control change numbers the same?
@prinznevsky Sorry, but I don't have answers to your questions. I don't know the default MIDI cc numbers for the various M-Audio controllers. They are typically easy to configure, however. And my guess is that the cc numbers for GM2 and GM are the same, although many instruments don't adhere to these.
@slightlydrybeans I do know how CC work, but "Rolandese" is a pain in the butt to understand. That, and I realize that this was manufactured before TX/RX protocols for GM2 were implemented, so you have to deal with that issue.
Thanks for the insight Wiz! I'm a midi newbie trying to assemble a live setup that doesn't rely on a computer. I just need to be able to play keyboard sounds, no sequencing or anything complicated. It sounds like the m- audio keyboard, USB midi box and jv1080 will do the trick... Or am I missing something?
@machomouse The USB MIDI box has to be used with a computer. If you want to connect a keyboard directly to the JV1080, you need a keyboard with a regular MIDI OUT port. There are plenty of those around. Just make sure you don't have a keyboard that is USB only.
hi keybdwizrd, thnks for posting these videos!..they really help people, like myself, who are considering buying the jv1080 but would like to hear the sounds on it played live... a couple of questions: are you running any additional hardware other than the module and keyboard? I wasn't sure if the oxygen49 has a midi out or not...
@machomouse Good question. I don't have the Oxygen set up right now, but often these inexpensive MIDI controllers only have USB for MIDI. In my case, I have the Oxygen connected to my iMac via USB. I also have an M-Audio USB-MIDI box, which allows me to connect to the JV-1080 using regular MIDI cables. To route the MIDI data from the Oxygen to the JV-1080, I either use Digital Performer or "MIDI Patchbay," a freeware program for the Mac.
@owen320 The JV1080 has a "perform" mode where it can play 16 different sounds on 16 different MIDI channels. This is called multi-timbral mode on many synths. Best get the manual, study up, and do some experimenting.
by the way... on ebay is one for sell. if you are interested, seems to be in good condition. i just bought another one now... and i´m not sure if that was a mistake, if i think it over...
I used to have one, Pet Shop Boys used to have 6 on stage. It is better played in patch mode, no multi because you will loose all the effects for that sound. It has LFO sync even in the effects. These is an amazing machine.
@MrChrisJG Sorry, but I really don't do "how to" videos. Everyone's setup is different and there are many different ways to make MIDI equipment work together depending upon what hardware and software you have. There are plenty of online forums for keyboardists, such as the ones at Harmony Central and Gearslutz. You can find plenty of tech support and "how to" information there.
I just bought a JV 1080 off Ebay, it may be only sample based but the sounds on this hardware are unique to the Roland JV synths, that's why I wanted one, not even VST can meet up to the standards of the instrument sounds on this hardware.
True. I have several software instruments that try and function like sample-based hardware instruments, but they generally pale in comparison. Companies like Roland and Yamaha have spent many years developing awesome patch libraries.
@Penguindog55 VST are only software, modules like the JV 1080 or any other synth are hardware and software together, dedicated machines, you can not beat that with a VST unless you have a very expensive D/A system. Still, there are some softwares that are amazing, just like the real thing but SOME, not all.
@vjrei but it's still not the same as having the real thing, and the likes of Native instruments or any vst instrument can't replace the JV 1080 or any real Roland instrument.
@Penguindog55 I have several sample-based VSTs such as Plugsound Pro, Cakewalk's Dimension Pro, MOTU Ethno Instrument, and MOTU's MachFive 2 sampler. I have found the sounds in each of them to be somewhat inconsistent, although each one contains some gems. In my opinion, if you could hand-pick sounds from each of them and combine them into a single VST, you could create a sound library that could rival hardware instruments. I just haven't found one that kick's butt unto itself.
@keybdwizrd " I have several sample-based VSTs such as Plugsound Pro, Cakewalk's Dimension Pro, MOTU Ethno Instrument, and MOTU's MachFive 2 sampler. I like the JV synths. I had a JV 1000 for a lot of years. I was surprised by the number of folks that think it's an abomination. I don't get how anyone could not like this synth.
I just prefer the 1080 and 2080 because of the sound chip, I have been wanting such a thing for a few years, you can also get some keyboards with the same chip as XP 50 60 or 80.
I must say, I thought I was completely done with the Roland digital synths, but I was looking and ebay has these for a nice price when they are there. I'll probably never get one, there are just too many other things out there I want. My next is going to be the DSI Prophet 8.
The SC8850 shoud be close to the JV-1080 in the means of sound characteristics. However, the SC8850 cannot be expanded, and the JV can, so I'd go for it.
I produced a lot of tracks with a JV-1080 at one time, but using it multitamb for a whole mix I always found it produced a kind of dull, veiled sound, like it was all behind a curtain, never clear and open sounding. Much better to use it for max a couple sounds in a mix.
sorry I keep asking you all these questions but your videos are great. Just wondering, how are you finding editing this module like the built in sounds. that's if you've still got it. A friend of mine recently purchased one and he's having a hard time so I was wondering if you got any tips or anything to help? thanks, appreciated
Often editing sounds with rack units can be very frustrating, as there are menus inside of menus. If he doesn't have the manual it can probably be downloaded from the Roland site. Personally, I don't really buy synths like this to do much editing - I get them to use the patches that they come pre-programmed with. I may adjust the timbre a little bit, or modify the effects, but nothing major.
yeah he mentioned the endless menus etc. i doubt he'll get deep into editing as there are a ton of authentic great sounds already. thanks for replying
I play modern jazz and I would like to know the following of the m-audio oxygen :
When i play live i use several sounds within one song such as: Flute, brass, human voice, guitar.
Can you assign sound patches to the buttons, and press just one button to hear for example flute, and if you would like to switch to brass you can do that by just pressing another button ?
How do you make all this sounds? i notice you dont move any of the buttons on your keystation. and do you know if its compatible with windows vista 64-bit?
The sounds are factory presets in the JV-1080 synthesizer module. I use Macs, so I am sorry, I don't know if anything is compatible with Vista or not.
Completely different instruments based upon completely different technology, and intended for different purposes. Sorry, but this is like asking "should I buy a minivan or a compact car?"
Instead of posting this question all over YouTube, I'd suggest you try one of the many online forums dedicated to discussions about synthesizers. A good one is the "Keys, Synths, and Samplers" forum at the Harmony Central website. You should search that forum for posts about this topic - I could be wrong, but I think it was discussed some months ago.
Same engine. The difference is that the 2080 has three FX slots instead of one and eight expansion slots instead of four. Unfortunately, it has a noisier DAC too. I recommend the XV-3080, which takes SRX and SR-JV80 cards. It has all of the same sounds, but a higher sample rate and better DAC.
I like the drums, but some people might find them to have a dated 90's sound to them. I have the drum/bass expansion card although it is not used in any of the videos. Honestly, I was not profoundly impressed with the additional drum kits on the expansion card. But the electric bass patches are awesome, IMHO.
you can find these all day for about 300 bucks, and the expansions for between 50 and 120 bucks. I just bought a 2080 about 2 months ago and its my favorite piece of equipment
Got it backwards when I typed that, didn't realize. I always used to remember it as double the amount to get the amount in pounds but I forgot that's how to turn pounds into US dollars not vice versa. The pound has more value than the US dollar and the way I said it was backwards.
The Fantoms are very distant descendants of this synth. The XV-3080/XV-5080 was the last synth to have these exact patches. I believe there is a patch conversion tool for the Fantom X that will convert XV-5080 patches.
As for the Fantom G, unless it can import X patches, you'd be out of luck. All of the basic waveforms are there though.
My first ever synth was a Roland XP-30. It is based on the JV-1080 as far as I know. It had plenty of nice sounds, until I put them in a multi performance, the patches started to loose effects and layers. Any way to work around that?
Dude, that was my issue also I couldn't believe it, I felt ripped off! You can only apply chorus, reverb and on fx of your choice to all the instrumetns in performance mode that's it.
I would like to know if the JV 1080 and the other modules do the same thing?
I was looking a JV 2080 a little bit. Is it really a lot better than JV 1080? Here in Slovenia are both quite cheap: from 400-500 eur, not new of course ;)
I have never had a JV-2080... I just know that it was the newer model that came out after the JV-1080 and can have 8 expansion cards (only 4 on the JV-1080).
i got a jv 1010 recently. all the patches out there work on it also. though id recommend a 1080 over the 1010 anyday too. but the sound engine on all 3 is so incredible. im gonna pick up a few in the next year while there cheap. i think that you can get so much out of it without any soundcard though. people need to learn to use soundiver already though.with that the possibilities are endless! lazy musicians. lol.. thanks for the vid dude.
I heard the jv 1080 lots of times before but I never recognised it. now I now how it sounds and it sucks imo! its almost in every single pop production that was made during the 90ies. uargh!!
BUT - as always great clip from kybrdwzrd!! thanks
KBW (or anyone else), Can you recommend some resources on music theory: Books or such explaining different scales, chord progressions, etc? I want to improve my improvisational and composition skills.
Wonderful, Michael. Luv the "Poly Saws" That JVC rocks. Don't be such a stranger, it's been like a month since you last posted a video...some of us were suffering from Keybdwizrd withdrawl.....that's a terrible thing, you know....

@Penguindog55 "personally I pick and mix sounds"
I can't think of one musician that doesn't.
"I mean one....being the only synth"
Who is arguing for one, and only one synth. I doubt you could find one musician, especially a keyboard player, that would only want/need one.
"VST....sound quality"
Of course some VST's have good sound quality. Why wouldn't they? Who is arguing against this?
Some freeware VST's are good, some are garbage. So what? Has nothing to do with this video

How do you make all this sounds? i notice you dont move any of the buttons on your keystation. and do you know if its compatible with windows vista 64-bit?
GSPGF 2 years ago
The sounds are factory presets in the JV-1080 synthesizer module. I use Macs, so I am sorry, I don't know if anything is compatible with Vista or not.

i'm considering to buy a roland JV 1080 or a novation a-station.. what's the best choice?
thomasverb 2 years ago
Completely different instruments based upon completely different technology, and intended for different purposes. Sorry, but this is like asking "should I buy a minivan or a compact car?"

Can anyone in this world tell is the 2080 that warm like the 1080?
Or do thay have the same sound engine?, I don`t care about the effects.
Are 2080 and 1080 sound thesame ?
SashoMusic 2 years ago
Instead of posting this question all over YouTube, I'd suggest you try one of the many online forums dedicated to discussions about synthesizers. A good one is the "Keys, Synths, and Samplers" forum at the Harmony Central website. You should search that forum for posts about this topic - I could be wrong, but I think it was discussed some months ago.
keybdwizrd 2 years ago
The 1080 is not warm
It's a digital ROMpler, with a krappy filter.

Same engine. The difference is that the 2080 has three FX slots instead of one and eight expansion slots instead of four. Unfortunately, it has a noisier DAC too. I recommend the XV-3080, which takes SRX and SR-JV80 cards. It has all of the same sounds, but a higher sample rate and better DAC.

how are the drums/percussion on this module? im thinking about buying one with the bass/perc expansion
djcripplecrunk 2 years ago
I like the drums, but some people might find them to have a dated 90's sound to them. I have the drum/bass expansion card although it is not used in any of the videos. Honestly, I was not profoundly impressed with the additional drum kits on the expansion card. But the electric bass patches are awesome, IMHO.

I sell Both the JV1080 DVD Tutorial and a JV1080 Resorces Kit disc. Both make working with this Module so much easier...

Wrong way round mate.
$1 = around 50p but it's different because of the recession at the moment.
Superape613 2 years ago
Two questions, 1) how much does it cost? 2) Do you know how to make jens johannson's lead sound?
Superape613 2 years ago
you can find these all day for about 300 bucks, and the expansions for between 50 and 120 bucks. I just bought a 2080 about 2 months ago and its my favorite piece of equipment
kurtgainz 2 years ago
Hmm, what's that in pounds?
Like, 200?
I wonder if they'd actually have all this stuff in England anyway.
Superape613 2 years ago
Check ebay, im sure someone would have it for a good price. i think your right about the currency as well.
kurtgainz 2 years ago
If it's $300 thats around 600 pounds. I would imagine so in any case.
Shintsu2 2 years ago
Actually, $300 is about 200 pounds.
keybdwizrd 2 years ago
Got it backwards when I typed that, didn't realize. I always used to remember it as double the amount to get the amount in pounds but I forgot that's how to turn pounds into US dollars not vice versa. The pound has more value than the US dollar and the way I said it was backwards.

are you running your MIDI synth thru a computer in this video??
fabbe155 2 years ago
All of my keyboards and synth modules are connected to an iMac via MIDI.

sounds so rich...all the demos on roland website for their new gear sounds thin and weedy! maybe roland should hire you!

Se puder responder, duas perguntas:
1- Esse Reverb todo em alguns sons vem do modulo?
2 - Vem com quantos patches de fabrica? e podem ser editados?
HLVilela 3 years ago
1. Sorry, I do not understand the question.
2. 512 patches, and yes.
Please try freetranslation com.
keybdwizrd 3 years ago
I am sorry! I thought you were Brazilian because you answered a question in Portuguese..
.. repeating :
1- Are this (aewsome)Reverb effect I hear from module?
HLVilela 3 years ago
LOL, I use the freetranslation site to answer questions in languages other than English. And yes, the reverb is from the JV1080.

isnt the fantom X series based on the jv1080 and its relatives? if so are these sounds in the fantom too??
haikousei 3 years ago
The Fantoms are very distant descendants of this synth. The XV-3080/XV-5080 was the last synth to have these exact patches. I believe there is a patch conversion tool for the Fantom X that will convert XV-5080 patches.
As for the Fantom G, unless it can import X patches, you'd be out of luck. All of the basic waveforms are there though.

i believe there are 2 'Orchestral' cards available for the 1080. Has anyone used either of these ??
Is anyone familiar with the 'Vintage' card ??
monsterjazzlicks 3 years ago
My first ever synth was a Roland XP-30. It is based on the JV-1080 as far as I know. It had plenty of nice sounds, until I put them in a multi performance, the patches started to loose effects and layers. Any way to work around that?
Robbinsffxi 3 years ago
Dude, that was my issue also I couldn't believe it, I felt ripped off! You can only apply chorus, reverb and on fx of your choice to all the instrumetns in performance mode that's it.
I would like to know if the JV 1080 and the other modules do the same thing?
Sweetassour 3 years ago
I have the really essential 1080 DVD tutorial up on ebay - tells you everything in an understandable way!!

great playing for "poly saws"! 10/10
I think the JV-1080 is the best synth ever made.
devonrose742 3 years ago
@devonrose742 have to agree with you
Penguindog55 1 year ago
Can you connect JV to the normal keyboad, not midi controller? Or does almost every better keyboard have this controller integrated.
Great playing btw.
voltaspeeder17 3 years ago
The JV can be connected to any keyboard that has MIDI. There are many great synths that do not have their own keyboards.
keybdwizrd 3 years ago
I was looking a JV 2080 a little bit. Is it really a lot better than JV 1080? Here in Slovenia are both quite cheap: from 400-500 eur, not new of course ;)
voltaspeeder17 3 years ago
I have never had a JV-2080... I just know that it was the newer model that came out after the JV-1080 and can have 8 expansion cards (only 4 on the JV-1080).
keybdwizrd 3 years ago
So, JV-1080 can be expanded with some new sounds? But why is it so cheap ? ;)
voltaspeeder17 3 years ago
Many Roland modules can be expanded. The JV series uses the SR-JV80 series of expansion cards. Try Google.
keybdwizrd 3 years ago
I think i will buy JV - 2080, because it has a techno expansion card added by a guy, who sell this machine and its only about 450euros.
voltaspeeder17 3 years ago
i got a jv 1010 recently. all the patches out there work on it also. though id recommend a 1080 over the 1010 anyday too. but the sound engine on all 3 is so incredible. im gonna pick up a few in the next year while there cheap. i think that you can get so much out of it without any soundcard though. people need to learn to use soundiver already though.with that the possibilities are endless! lazy musicians. lol.. thanks for the vid dude.

I heard the jv 1080 lots of times before but I never recognised it. now I now how it sounds and it sucks imo! its almost in every single pop production that was made during the 90ies. uargh!!
BUT - as always great clip from kybrdwzrd!! thanks
