I really loved the "hand shakin' thing" at '7'00. That was "really American". Nothing like this would EVER take place here in Germany - because we don't adore our politicians - we criticize them - every day - and a lot! No place for such a ceremony ;-)) Nice to see it though ;-))

In 2011 Obama has significantly increased his popularity twice: after the Giffords shooting and after the killing of Bin Laden. In Europe we tend to distrust and thrash our politicians even more

I have to disagree with the "Deutschland über alles" bit, but what the hell, it's a good song.

@cbrusharmy The national anthem of Germany is not called "Deutschland über alles" anymore. That was during Nazi Germany. You also don't sing the first anthem anymore as most non-Germans still think.

It is called "Das Deutschlandlied" (The song of the Germans) and since the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany, you no longer sing the first stanza anymore. Since the foundation in 1949 you sing the third stanza instead: "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit"

"Deutshland über alles" does not mean above all other countries, but above all other german states, which were doing their own thing at the time. It's a patriotic thing, the unification of all little states to a Nation called "Germany".

@Muhlineks That's what it meant originally. During the Third Reich it was used to mean Germany above other countries. That's why it is no longer part of the German National Anthem.
