At 1:17, I wonder if Mac was smiling because he was happy that he used the squidge very well for the first time or if he was smiling because that was his way of saying "that will teach him not to paint on things he's not supposed too" and/or "that will teach him after he painted a "2" on my sailboat, a "6" on the cake I baked, a "7" on my box, an "8" on my head, a "9" on where I just cleaned, and painting a "10" on my stool after getting my clothes messed up.
If the nurse came back to the waiting room at 0:45, I wonder whether the painter would continue to finish painting his "11" since he already started painting getting paint on the window and got his first "1" painted at 0:45 or, I wonder if he would rush to sit back down to act normal like he did the first two times when the nurse was coming since he was shy and embarrassed in this skit for anyone to see him painting his "11."
If the painter is very embarrassed for the nurse to see him painting his "11" on the window, wouldn't he feel embarrassed if the nurse saw the "11" on the window if the janitor didn't come by to wash it off since he was the only one in the waiting room where the nurse would probably know that it was him who painted the "11?"
Stockard Channing once again in this episode as the nurse saying.."next". She was also in the episode where he is wanting to paint a 3 and she keeps taking away the bread he is painting the 3's on.
She was also in the #4 painter skit wearing a rain jacket and a rain hat and carrying an umbrellia where she was wondering where the rain was. Also, she was in the #7 painter skit which took place at an elevator where she was a passenger in the elevator.
This is a great one!! Paul Benedict and Stockard Channing really worked well together in these skits. As I recall, it was this one, number 3 and number 4.
It's sad to know Paul is gone. But this character, as well as his kind hearted Mr. Bentley on THE JEFFERSONS will help keep his memory alive. He was a great man!!
If the painter didn't want his "11" to get removed, I wonder why from 1:07-1:15 he didn't stop the janitor from washing it off. Of course, I'm sure he was looking at the janitors cleaning stuff that whole time and was watching him what he was doing but, I don't know why he didn't stop him.
The reason why there isn't a number 1 painter skit was because, Sesame Street didn't use the number 1 as the number of the day at this time.
Also, I guess the reason why there isn't a 12 painter skit was because, at the end of this skit, the nurse pulled the painter in the office (showing the audience that the painter has been caught and won't paint numbers anymore). Once the doctor checked him out, the doctor found a problem with him, and put him away in a hospital for crazy people.
Yes, it does sound funny but, maybe it is true just to show the audience that, now that the painter has been caught and put away in a hospital for crazy people just for painting numbers in spots he's not supposed too, he's probably never set free to paint a "12" or any number anywhere. (Probably the doctor took away his paint can and paint brush too just so that he doesn't paint a number anywhere around the hospital).
Maybe the doctor did that which could be the reason why the painter is not seen anymore to paint anymore numbers between 12-20 or, once the doctor did a full body check up on him and saw a problem with him , the doctor probably put him away in a hospital for crazy people just for painting numbers on spots in public places he's not supposed too. Plus, before he was taken to the hospital, the doctor probably took away his paint can and paint brush, so now he can't paint numbers between 12-20.
The Mad painter moving his head in circles even after the cleaning man is finished using his cloth really cracks me up! This clip and the ones with 3 (picnic), 4 (umbrella), and 7 (elevator) are the ones in this series which feature Stockard Channing. All in the series, however, are great memories!
I've had it insisted to me that the fellow who composed the music for "Milk Crisis" (milk, mee-yulk, milk) played and composed the Mad Painter cues. However, to me they sound *identically* like Joe Raposo, and Nick Raposo said that his father wrote and played this. We may never know for sure, but I tend to believe Nick Raposo. The Mad Painter cues simply sound like Joe.
The Mad Painter/Mr Bentley(Paul Benedict) has made it to the heavens as of December 1,2008. He now custom paints numbers on the wings of each new arrival and refers to jesus as "Mr. J" :0)
Yes, the nurse is played by Stockard Channing. Also that's right, she was in the Mad Painter #3 skit. She was also in the #4 and #7 Mad Painter skits.
My mom actually had a copy of that SEVENTEEN magazine that he is holding upside - down in this clip . I am crushed to hear of his passing . He's in a better place now . You can bet on that .
Whoa... what is wrong with my memory? I used to love this guy and forgot all about him, until I saw this. Makes me wonder how much more I need refreshing on.
Yes that's true. It would be great if my doctor could see patients that fast too. Unless, maybe there was more than one doctor which is why the patients were called in very fast. The nurse was nice to let the other patients walk into the office themselves but, I'm not sure why she had to pull and push the painter inside. Perhaps the painter was checked out by the doctor and was put away in a hospital for crazy people since he paints numbers on things he's not supposed too.
The Mad Painter is played by Paul Benedict, a wonderful, sweet and dear friend. Paul died this week, it is so hard to believe, it feels like I have lost my funny bone.
What a surprise to hear that. That's too bad. His memories will last forever as long as we're able to keep these "Mad Painter" posts up! I'm sure he's making God laugh now! RIP Paul Benedict!
I love Mac's face when he sees the 11 on the door before he washes it off. Turns to the camera and basically says "Oh geez.. not AGAIN!". Mac was a workaholic in most of these skits! A baker, A janitor, street cleaner... did he sleep?
Yes, I love seeing Mac's face too when he turned to the camera. Also, Mac was also a sailboat harbor owner in the #2 painter skit, and he was a swimming pool owner in the #8 painter skit. Maybe he's playing as a different character/person in all the painter skits because in the #10 painter skit, Mac looked like he didn't know the painter because as the painter was looking closely at a stool that he painted a "10" on, Mac then looked at the stool very confused what the painter was looking at.
lol i figured out he was bently on the jeffersons when i was like 7 or somthing, back in the 80's. you know the bartender on the jeffersons was luigi on the super mario super show from the early 90's as well
Only recently(the 90s ) did I realize that as a kid I was watching Stockard Channing in the mad painter episodes.Ive been hooke on the lady since I was a kid.Ill never be free of her charms or those killer legs :)
Yes, I also thought it was funny when he said "Yikes" but, I wasn't sure if he said "Yikes" because he was being pulled in or, because he got caught for always painting numbers in spots he wasn't supposed too. However, I thought it looked a little unprofessional for the nurse to be pulling him in, even if he was a patient waiting to be called in. I'm sure the nurse knows that he can walk inside himself, and if she was going to pull him in, I wonder why she didn't pull the other patients in.
I agree the doctor was probably very fast or, there was probably more than one doctor which is why the patients were called in that fast. Also, I wonder if there was also a back door in the office that the patients were exiting after their check up because this skit doesn't show the patients walking out the door they entered into the office.
Yes, the number 6 painter skit is posted on YouTube. On the google website, just type in Mad Painter #6 and the number 6 painter skit is the first one to click on, on the top of the list.
I liked it too but, I wonder why he was trying to not get caught because on the other number painter skits, it looked like he didn't care if anyone saw him painting a number somewhere and sometimes he would show the number he painted to someone on the skit. Also in this skit, it looked like he didn't care that the janitor saw the "11" he painted on the window before the janitor washed the "11" off.
I remember this one. :) Since this was the last segment of the Number Painter, the doctor probably had him committed and that's why you don't see anymore of him after Number 11. :)
Yes that's true. Also, maybe all the past Number Painter skits were making kids put graffiti anywhere in the world, so Sesame Workshop decided to make a last Number Painter 11 skit where the Painter gets caught to show that the Painter won't be able to paint numbers anymore and to show that they won't be doing anymore Number Painter skits. People were probably complaining to PBS that their children were putting graffiti around the world and are getting in trouble for it.
I agree. Probably as soon as the nurse pulled the painter into the office, the doctor did a check-up on him and found out that there was something wrong with the painter in the head since he paints numbers on people and things he's not supposed too. So probably the doctor took away his paint can and his paint brush and then the doctor put him in a hospital for crazy people where he's not set free. Since he's never free, he's not able to get hold of a paint can or paint brush to paint a 12.
Funny what would have happened had a number 12 film been made. The Mad Painter, in a straitjacket somehow got loose, stole a can of paint and brush, and intended to paint a "12" near, say, a wall (indicating what address it is), then someone...maybe Mac, caught him and as the Mad Painter was led away, he screamed, "12"...hmmm. but alas, the Mad Painter did get his.
I thought of something a couple of days ago. This last "Mad Painter" segment is the only one that has another character's voice dubbed in other than, of course, the painter.
WOW, that nurse that comes out in the beginning is Stockard Channing, (aka Rizzo from Grease) As a kid I had seen this segment a thousand times and never realized it.
Are you sure this isn't Paul Benedict's voice? I don't notice a difference in the voices from the other painter sketches. But if it is, I wonder why they felt it necessary to use another voice.
It IS Benedicts' voice! What I meant was that the woman that says "next" was the only time that you heard another voice other than the painter. In all the other painter segments, Benedict's voice was the ONLY voice that was heard.
The Number 5 Painter skit was posted up on YouTube but now, I think it has been removed either because the person who probably posted it decided to remove it. Or, maybe since that skit took place at a zoo in a gorilla's cage, the Number 5 Painter skit was probably encouraging young kids to go near a gorilla.

I've got it in one of my Unpaved episodes, I think; it'd need the logo replaced first, though.

I would appreciate that too!

I think the guy who posted number 5 got suspended about 7 or 8 months ago. That's why it disappeared.
