Unexpected link forged between Pride and Prejudice and Doctor Who in my mind...that "WHAT" equals the many uttered on various occasions by David Tennant xD
Interesting fact about the actress who plays Caroline Bingley. She is an actual descendant of Jane Austen (eight times niece). And has family ties to the sister of Anne Boleyn. How's that for ancestry?
So why DID Wickham run off with Lydia, knowing she had no money? Was it just so he could have sex with a virgin? Seriously, can someone explain it to me?
@harrietcow I think he ran away with lydia knowing that if disgrace was brought upon elizabeth's family, mr.darcy would come to her rescue. In other words, he wanted to get back at mr. darcy through elizabeth
@harrietcow it was probably because he was attracted to lydia and just wanted to have sex with her and then because she had no money, leave her. i also think that maybe he thought that he was trying to kill two birds with one stone as kayreen85 said
@Suenosdeunicornio I thought Wickham ran off with Lydia because Darcy assured him that if he was to marry her, he would supply him with a steady income. He did this in order to not bring disgrace to the Bennet Family knowing that if that was to happen, he will be unable to marry Elizabeth.
1. Wickham had absolutely no means to know of Mr. Darcy's affection for Elizabeth, as only them two and Jane knew about it. And even if he did, he had no way of knowing how serious these affections were (and therefore he had no way to know whether Darcy would indeed help them).
@memandi2 2. Mr. Darcy's reason for helping the Bennets has nothing to do with him being unable to marry Elizabeth otherwise. He had confessed he had little hope, his reason was far less interested: he didn't want her and her family to be humiliated, "tainted by association". He simply did this because he loved her, no matter how she felt about him or whether or not she would eventually consent to marry him.
The answer was discreetly given by JA for she had painted a vivid picture of Wickham, far more so than of Darcy. Lizzy said to Mrs B: “But Jane knows, as well as I do, what Wickham really is. We both know that he has been profligate in every sense of the word. That he has neither integrity nor honour. That he is as false and deceitful, as he is insinuating.'' W was a rake with enormous appetites for women and the good life. (con't)
Darcy found on questioning him after the elopement that he had no intentions of ever marrying Lydia. Wickham faced debtors’ prison if he could not pay his due, so he fled - Lydia provided a convenient means for Wickham to also slake his lust for flesh while on the run.
“He was declared to be in debt to every tradesman in the place, and his intrigues, all honoured with the title of seduction, had been extended into every tradesman's family.”
W must have tried the quick fix to his problems by hoping to succeed in gambling but this only increased his debt.
“He confessed himself obliged to leave the regiment, on account of some debts of honour, which were very pressing; and scrupled not to lay all the ill-consequences of Lydia's flight on her own folly alone.”
@memandi2@KattunxLuv“She had scarcely needed her present observation to be satisfied, from the reason of things, that their elopement had been brought on by the strength of her love, rather than by his; and she would have wondered why, without violently caring for her, he chose to elope with her at all, had she not felt certain that his flight was rendered necessary by distress of circumstances; and if that were the case, he was not the young man to resist an opportunity of having a companion.”
“Mr. Darcy asked him why he had not married your sister at once. Though Mr. Bennet was not imagined to be very rich, he would have been able to do something for him, and his situation must have been benefited by marriage. But he found, in reply to this question, that Wickham still cherished the hope of more effectually making his fortune by marriage in some other country. Under such circumstances, however, he was not likely to be proof against the temptation of immediate relief.” Chap 52
@Suenosdeunicornio@kayreen85 this is not it. As Mr. Gardner put it, the temptation was not worth the risk. The reason that he ran with Lydia is unsure but the best speculation is that he was running away from his creditors and this excuse gave him more time to escape them (as they would have believed him to have eloped and only later realize that this was not his true plan). And he had no way of knowing the feelings Darcy had for Elizabeth, either (regarding the second reason).
I cannot understand Mrs. Bennet. Her daughter's behaviour has scandalised the family and the only thing she is thinking about is wedding clothes... This women is so light headed.
@HotbutterOnToast. I agree Mary is nerdy and somewhat prudish but she is not silly. If she lived in todays world she would go on to get a PhD and have a very successful life. In Austen's time a girl was judged on her looks, wit, accomplishments and of course her fortune.
bahahahaha, love how u can always see mr.hurst passed out in the back. and when caroline mentions how she hopes darcy isnt thinking about lizzy hes all "WHAT?!" lol, we all know thats what he was doing.
@fyredancesteppz The woman playing Ms. Bingley is realated to Jane Austen, who was her great aunt, I believe. She looks prettier with a different hair style. The one she wears here doesn't do her justice.

i love reading comments while i wait for the video to load bcoz i get to read many great ideas of other intelligent ppl.and it help me to make up my own idea abt the video
I know Austen always lumps Mary in with Kitty and Lydia in her description of "silly girls" but Mary never seemed silly to me, just kind of nerdy and trying-too-hard because she's not as pretty as the others.
@HotButterOnToast her vanity is that she thinks she is the best. she's blinded by what she thinks are her "accomplishments" and that makes her silly.
@HotButterOnToast Mary is silly, i think. Not in the way that Kitty and Lydia - she is not a bimbo - but she is pompous and ridiculous in her lack of understanding of people. She is silly in the same way that Mr Collins is silly.
@HotButterOnToast exactly! and lets not forget that she is eighteen at most. I have seen a lot of bright teenagers trying too hard and being isufferable because of it, but growing out of that habbit with time.
@HotButterOnToast I think it might be fair, especially with this interpretation in mind, to think that "silly" in regards to Mary could be seen as "pretentious".
@HotButterOnToast Austen never included Mary in Mr. B's comments of silly girls. Blame the screenwriters for this impression; it's not in the book. This is what Mr. Bennet says of Mary:
“What say you, Mary? for you are a young lady of deep reflection I know, and read great books, and make extracts.''; and of Lidia & Kitty:
``From all that I can collect by your manner of talking, you must be two of the silliest girls in the country. I have suspected it some time, but I am now convinced.''
@HotButterOnToast I was wrong- Mr. B called his three younger daughters collectively silly (Chap 41.) when L was trying to convince him not to allow Lydia to go to Brighton. Other than this instance & my prior quote, he called all his daughters silly (Chap 1), allowing for L's greater wit. I could not find any instance when L referred to her younger sisters collectively as silly. L saw Mary as pedantic & vain but one who at least applied herself in study, while Lydia & Kitty were just airheads.
@shortypingi Mary is acting ridiculous at the dinner table. What the heck are you guys talking about? She is inappropriate with a complete lack of tact in the book and the movie. She actually fell for Mr. Collins too... HELLO! LMAO
Good point! I think Mary was stuck between the strong and intelligent (Jane and Lizzie) and the silly (Lydia and Kitty). It does show in her personality, doesn't it? She realizes it's better to be intelligent than silly, which does make her better in my eyes. :D
Mary is silly. In a different way than the other two, but very stupid anyway. She understands nothing of what she reads or what is discussed and she understands and has no subtlety. Reading books in itself does not necessarily make you smart.
@HotButterOnToast but don't you think its a bit silly to try too hard when you know you are not very good at.. singing, for instance? what about her behaviour at the Netherfield ball? :)
i love georgiana, she is so cute, and very lucky to be protected by her brother, i fear otherwise the stupid bingley sisters would have her in their power (i hate their idiotic headpieces in every scene these women appear -.- )
@GingerEckley818 haha the only way to survive having THAT for a wife, especially being friends with the vile caroline bingley... nothing a jealous woman wont do i guess...
@Sage80 in the book it says that mr gardiner is her brother, but in this adaption its a little unclear, mainly because she calls mrs gardner 'sister', because she's her sister-in-law. Even now some people address their spouses parents and siblings the same way their spouse does, e.g calling your father-in-law 'dad' :) if your not familiar with this, it might be cos its just an english thing, but im not sure. hope this helps!
I like both versions for various reasons. However I do not like how they wrote Mary's part in this version. In the 2005 version Mary just seems sardonic( i think that is the right word please correct me if it doesn't make sense.)
I can't help but wonder how such a dysfunctional family would get two fine, smart and good-hearted daughters - Jane and Elizabeth. It feels like these two were brought to this house from another planet... They certainly support each other and grow together, but still...
Hey ! I'm french and i watched the beginning of P&P in french, it was good but no more. Then i decided to watch it in original version and i saw a clear difference !! I think this adaptation is better than the last one (2005) despite i like it too !
"you must tell him what a dreadful state im in how i have such tremblings & flutterings all over me, such spasms in my side, & pains in my head & beatings in my heart that i can get no rest either night or day." Really Mrs. Bennett do you not know your husband well enough to know that this news will lift his spirits?
It makes you wonder how the first two sisters came out so sensible in the Bennet household. Mary is a little odd and the youngest two have air in their heads, so how did Jane and Elizabeth turn out so well? Maybe the father had a bit more of a hand in raising them and as he lost interest in his wife he also left the kids with only the mother as the role model...THE HORROR! :)
@ainnhana I don't think we should be so hard on Lydia. She's stupid and very naive. Like Lizzy said, she's just an insufferable flirt. Wickham should be able to judge how abominable what they were about to do is and how he should not take advantage of her. Her letter says it all, she fancies herself in love with Wickham and eloping to marry him probably seems logical to her. After all, she never had much sense! I doubt it was her design to ruin her family.
"And tell Lydia not to get any wedding clothes 'till she see's me" hahahaha. The least of Mrs. Bennett's problems. The actress that plays Mrs. Bennett is fabulous in her role.
I know times were really different back then, but wouldn't it have been better just to get Lydia back, without having her marry Wickham, and just pretend like the whole thing never happened?
No,I think if they had done that it would've been worse.Since in that day and age women were supposed to be virgins until marriage,an elopement was considered scandalous and dishonorable, let alone if there was no wedding soon afterwards. Back then,"news spread faster than diseases" and this kind of situation was probably even more degrading than prostitution is nowadays...Imagine the whole society knowing about it from Merryton all the way to Brighton...
the 'scarf' lizzie takes of at 2:26 . . . what is that supposed to do? it can hardly be to keep warm :) I'm sure it was very fashionable at the time, but it just seems silly, how small and pointless it is, lol.
@suiamanda yup, mr. wickham had sex with lydia (knowing her she probably deserved it -_-) but he planned to do the same with Mr. Darcy's sister but it said before that the day before they were to leave, Mr. Darcy came and his sister told them of their plan and mr. darcy stopped it
love this part: "for she's not the kind of girl to do that sort of thing (yeah right) *pausepause* if she had been properly looked after!" so great hahaha
poor lydia? seriously? how can these sisters feel sorry for lydia and place the blame on wickham alone? could they not see that their so-called poor lydia was having fun with denny boy even before wickham made his presence? ughh! theres a limit to hide one's own dirty washings.
Can someone please tell me WHY Wickham elopes with Lydia to ebgin with?
I mean, he had liked Lizzy and plus, Lydia doesn't even have any money, so what does he get out of having a relationship with her....I mean his plan was never to marry her certainly, but then Lydia would have told everyone what he had done to her and he would have gotten a bad name anyway?
I never understood this particular point of the novel/movie.
@peacealways100 Most likely Wickham did it cause he knew Lydia was stupid and smitten with him and he was jealous/mad about Lizzie's change of preference which she clearly stated awhile back when Wickham asked her how Darcy had changed and how she said her opinion of him has changed.
@peacealways100 It's never mentioned out-right, because it would be improper, but there are hints: Wickham is a womanizer. Any woman will do to slake his lust. I think by getting Lydia to run away with him, he's also punishing Lizzy, because he would have preferred to get into her skirts, but she changed her mind about him. :O
@peacealways100 PrayerWarrior is right, plus having sex out of wedlock and running off with a woman did nothing to a man, even though it destroyed a girl's reputation. Men were more or less allowed to do whatever they wanted, earning a reputation as a 'rogue' or as a 'casanova', but never being reprimanded in any other way. For Wickham it was just about having a bit of fun and getting a little petty revenge in the process.
@WildGiggleGirl whats worst too is that not only does it ruin the girls reputation, it ruins that of her entire family which is just ridiculously unfair...
@Candican2 Guilt by association. It was thought that if one girl acted that way, that something had gone wrong in raising them or that they had "bad blood". Unfair, but the logic of the times.
Oh Mrs Bennet! any reason to whine and moan! and when she finds a reason, oh! then she lists all the problems that existed since she was young! Oh dear me Mrs Bennet! dear me!
Good god, Mary is annoying. Anything that comes out of her mouth is just spewing judgment in the form of speeches about morality and god-fearing behavior. No one needs that crap in a time of despair like this!!
What a collector's item: a "should of" and a "would of", and in consecutive sentences! Now that's what I call hilarious! Miss Austin "would have" really appreciated your comment.

In some ways, Mary is right. However, I believe she can be more compassionate for her sister than that..

Is Mr Gardner Mrs. Bennett's brother? Or is Mrs. Gardner her sister?
Sage80 1 year ago
@Sage80 in the book it says that mr gardiner is her brother, but in this adaption its a little unclear, mainly because she calls mrs gardner 'sister', because she's her sister-in-law. Even now some people address their spouses parents and siblings the same way their spouse does, e.g calling your father-in-law 'dad' :) if your not familiar with this, it might be cos its just an english thing, but im not sure. hope this helps!
fabziepie 1 year ago
I like both versions for various reasons. However I do not like how they wrote Mary's part in this version. In the 2005 version Mary just seems sardonic( i think that is the right word please correct me if it doesn't make sense.)

I can't help but wonder how such a dysfunctional family would get two fine, smart and good-hearted daughters - Jane and Elizabeth. It feels like these two were brought to this house from another planet... They certainly support each other and grow together, but still...

Pineapple2141 1 year ago 5

Danirox1994 1 year ago
@Danirox1994
No,I think if they had done that it would've been worse.Since in that day and age women were supposed to be virgins until marriage,an elopement was considered scandalous and dishonorable, let alone if there was no wedding soon afterwards. Back then,"news spread faster than diseases" and this kind of situation was probably even more degrading than prostitution is nowadays...Imagine the whole society knowing about it from Merryton all the way to Brighton...

the 'scarf' lizzie takes of at 2:26 . . . what is that supposed to do? it can hardly be to keep warm :) I'm sure it was very fashionable at the time, but it just seems silly, how small and pointless it is, lol.

poor lydia? seriously? how can these sisters feel sorry for lydia and place the blame on wickham alone? could they not see that their so-called poor lydia was having fun with denny boy even before wickham made his presence? ughh! theres a limit to hide one's own dirty washings.
ainnhana 1 year ago
Can someone please tell me WHY Wickham elopes with Lydia to ebgin with?
I mean, he had liked Lizzy and plus, Lydia doesn't even have any money, so what does he get out of having a relationship with her....I mean his plan was never to marry her certainly, but then Lydia would have told everyone what he had done to her and he would have gotten a bad name anyway?
I never understood this particular point of the novel/movie.
peacealways100 1 year ago
@peacealways100 that or he was horny...
PrayerWarrior4 1 year ago 2
@peacealways100 Most likely Wickham did it cause he knew Lydia was stupid and smitten with him and he was jealous/mad about Lizzie's change of preference which she clearly stated awhile back when Wickham asked her how Darcy had changed and how she said her opinion of him has changed.
Tygrfawn78 1 year ago 6
@peacealways100 It's never mentioned out-right, because it would be improper, but there are hints: Wickham is a womanizer. Any woman will do to slake his lust. I think by getting Lydia to run away with him, he's also punishing Lizzy, because he would have preferred to get into her skirts, but she changed her mind about him. :O
JadedLilth 1 year ago
@JadedLilth haha!
THEAkariTsuya 1 year ago
@peacealways100 PrayerWarrior is right, plus having sex out of wedlock and running off with a woman did nothing to a man, even though it destroyed a girl's reputation. Men were more or less allowed to do whatever they wanted, earning a reputation as a 'rogue' or as a 'casanova', but never being reprimanded in any other way. For Wickham it was just about having a bit of fun and getting a little petty revenge in the process.
WildGiggleGirl 1 year ago
@WildGiggleGirl whats worst too is that not only does it ruin the girls reputation, it ruins that of her entire family which is just ridiculously unfair...
Candican2 1 year ago
@Candican2 Guilt by association. It was thought that if one girl acted that way, that something had gone wrong in raising them or that they had "bad blood". Unfair, but the logic of the times.
WildGiggleGirl 1 year ago
just because Miss Bingley's jealous that lizzie is 1000% prettier than she'll ever be.
caroline's such a pain in the arse, especially when she points out all the "bad things" about Lizzie.
