  • Vocal fries sound like stuck pigs. I'll never get it.

  • DUUUUUDE your practise under lose glass fibre insulation? maybe your vocal fry comes from your constantly irritated throat? seriously that just isn't healthy

  • Dude, you are really good! Keep up the great work!

  • your highs sound like black metal

  • Whitechapel uses fry for their highs. and he uses gutturals with his lows but mixes a little vocal fry in them for enunciation.

  • Your lows scare me! Sounds like a demon from hell! D:

  • dude your great make more vidddssss

  • Your low's are pretty nasty.

  • Dude, your pretty good. LOL dude my phone in my pocket vibrated at the exact same time as that vibrate noise at the end of the video

at first I thought it was my phone and I was like.... wait... I wouldn't hear it through my headphone wtf. so I played it back to make sure I wasn't trippin

  • Whitechapel don't use vocal fry...they use complete false cord/power exhale. grindcore vocals. They NEVER use vocal fry...wait, haha, I think I had a disagreement with you on another one of your vids, haha. Dude, just to let you know, I am not stalking your videos or anything, this just came up in my recommended for you section xD Peace!

  • @InsanityIsNormality haha!! No worries I thought it was funny you bumped into these videos again. Uhh I have really old demos of them where I have no idea how that could be false chord, there's a 6 track demo and a 2006 two track promo demo. I used to argue about it but now I don't really care about it enough to worry about it.

  • @InsanityIsNormality he actully never used vocal fry for ANYTHING including the demo until ANAOC. Live he started to use vocal fry. i talk to him at a show about it.

  • @InsanityIsNormality Whitechapel uses fry for their highs. and he uses gutturals with his lows but mixes a little vocal fry in them for enunciation.

  • @SuperRageFest You're joking, right? They are obviously false chord highs. Just gotta listen to them, plus I have seen them live. They are false chord. And his lows, maybe...but...for the most part, definitely false chord. And he doesn't only use gutturals for his lows, they are just one style he incorporates. Trust me, I know, they are one of my fave bands.

  • @InsanityIsNormality I have seen them live too. and i talk to phil about it. I know my shit. he uses all gutturals and fry. not false. and live he actually uses straight fry vocals. dont believe me? listen to his vocals on the videos on my channel. I know my shit son.

  • pretty sick

  • Okay! I've always been interested in learning to scream properly instead of JUST playing the bass(which is not bad FYI between the buried and me) now to my point. THIS is the exact sound I want lol thanks bro.

  • fucking awesome dude!

  • Tht is a true vocal fry I can vocal fry to

  • You're awesome! :D:D

  • Can some one watch some o my videos and leave some comment and tell me how im doing! I have some vocal cover of some songs an I need feedback!

  • ur amp makes you sound better than you are with the settings your using but ur doing a good job

  • @choeuchkin I have a vid that's still from forever ago with no mic and I link to a recording where obviously I wouldn't be goin through an amp, but thank you for the compliments!

  • @DrowSwordsman well pretty much every screamo frontman SOUNDS better than they really are, the sound you get from the amp is a large component with screaming

  • shits tight bro

  • Dude those recordings on soundclick sound LEGIT!

  • Just watched this video coz...I didn't know what vocal fry was. But it sounded awesome, especially the lows XD nice job

  • nice lows man!! how old r u?

  • @RetroRifleGuitarist2 Thanks man! I was 17 when I posted this, 19 now. The link to the soundclick is a recording of me done in December/early January.

  • can you make a more detailed tutorial on how to screeni think you are really good

  • ...Ugh.

  • you'r lows are fucking amazing!

  • I don't really like that so much, I just prefer to do something like...

    ASLDFKJAKLWEFJSKJFWIOEFJ SOULS

    I love these tutorials.

  • dude..ur really good. dude u dont suck

  • i'm not gonna lie i wasn't really into your highs. but your lows gave me a fucking hard on. good job.

  • LOL

  • @ihatethisstupidform Thank you! I suggest checking out the link in the "more info" section or checking out my other vid, imo my highs are much better now.

  • FRY SCREAM FTW! pretty good tho

  • check out the cover i did and tell me

    please what u think

    cheers

  • your lows are awesome but the highs kinda suck

  • Dude you really suck! lol!

  • I know. :(. Workin on that. Next video should be better.

  • I was jokin.. lol! I thought you didnt care what people said? lol!

  • Do you expect me to remember what I said in this video over a year ago? XD. I won't even watch it now, ha! And my screams did blow in this video. :3.

  • Well it is YOUR video and its right up there.. just press play. maybe it will jog your memory. :)

  • i dig the vid :)

    real true!

tho may i ask what do u call it when u LITERARLY go ALL OUT in a vocal fry, i mean when u get alota confidence on stage and you scream REALLY hard for a lonnng note, PUNCHING THROUGH the Fry and hitting that ONE point that reachs...i think your own voice litterarly screaming and not "singing screaming" anymore~

it would help allot if u could reply back! :)

  • Not going to lie, I am unsure as to what exactly you mean. You can scream and do fry and go "all out" as you call it. You just push as hard as you can, and chances are your screams won't last a whole show like that, you should be able to have large amounts of volume without screaming your throat out. I mean at any point you could switch from your fry scream to your "literally screaming" voice which is essentially an untrained false chord technique.

  • woow,

    thats reaally awkward D:

haha, no wonder why some girls just ran out of the gig x'D

    alright, gotta cool it~

    Thanks mate! :)

  • Never push too hard. Most of the volume is through your facial expression and PA system, trust me volume should never be an issue. Has a vocal fry screamer your goal is to get what is called overtone. If you don't know what overtone is it basically having two notes played. You have your scream which is mainly heard and then you will hear a higher note right above it. Gives great definition.

  • make another

  • cup the mic more why don't you

  • Please learn to read comments before running your mouth. I have another vid, though still just as old as this one where I don't even use a mic. Also, I pwned a guy with a vid of Whitechapel cupping the mic on the recording of This is Exile when he was like NO WAY GOOD VOCALISTS EVER DO IT

  • If you can do it without a mic then why would you cup it when you ARE using one? Cupping it = automatic fail. And anyway I don't listen to music like this so I could care less about your whitechapel or core nonsense. Inb4 you say "don't watch the video if you don't like it."

  • "Anyway, I don't listen to music like this, nor do I understand it, but I make it a point to make my opinion known away via trolling youtube by commenting on how someone...holds a microphone"

  • Yeah, I don't understand why someone would want to make a fucking ridiculous inaudible series of animal noises instead of actually learning to do proper death metal vocals. But hey deathcore isn't even metal anyway so whatever. Oh and last time I checked youtube comments weren't reserved for people to say how much they like you or tell you how good you are. If you post a video on this site you better be ready for someone to tell you what they think about it.

  • whitechapel uses gutterals and growls dont they? sounds better than frys i think

  • they sound exactly the same...gutterals and growls arent a ..."way"? of screaming....and thats usually more throat so i doubt whitechapel uses that

  • Yeah, gutterals in my opinion are a way of defining a "low". Growling is a specific way of using the false chord technique aka Opeth, Swallow the Sun, and probably a bunch of other bands I'm too tired to name right now.

If you listen to the old Whitechapel EP's that aren't clouded with production I think its easy to tell its vocal fry and the way his lows are leads me to think its vocal fry, its not as pronounced as growling, though Phil hasn't come out and said anything about his technique.

  • Haha. Dude, you are fucking good!!!

    Epic win!!!

  • Thanks man!

  • ahh praise him :) scope out my covers! you wont be disipointed id bet money on it!

  • I checked your cover of HTML rulez d00d since that was the only song I knew, and you have sick highs! I would turn the music down a little because I couldn't hear your scream super clearly.

  • thanks man! stoked you liked it! thats legit! any way i can post it as a video response here?

  • Yeah dude sure! Gotta help each other out. :).

  • your growls sound nothing like whitechapel dont cup the mic and lets see how low you can get.

  • They aren't growls because growling is a false chord technique, and why don't you check the vid without any mic ;)

  • And wow, your false chord screams sound terrible. Put up something half decent before slamming ANYONE else. I posted this over a year ago and am about ready to make a new vid.

  • yah notice how old my video is as well i was screaming for about 2 weeks when i posted that video, i could show you up anytime, false/death chord screams r better than fry unless u actually use a power fry.

  • Yeah man youtube slamming is so pro I bet you're really cool ;). EPIC INTERNETZ BATTLE. If you had really good false chord technique man I'd shut the hell up. Until then, you're just trolling.

  • yup your right lmao just made my self look like a dumbass but fuck it.

  • FINAL comment.

Youtube search "Whitechapel this is exile studio blog". Click first video. Go to 4:27. yeah, Whitechapel would never cup, especially in a studio recording ;)

  • looks like i just got shut up, nice legitimate arguments.

  • wow you have some pretty sick vocals! :0 I effen love them and whitechapel is incredible more props to you!

  • you kinda sound like a pterodactyl... from the mongolian forest flying over the sacred trees and as you look for a mate and cant find one you let outt your last breath and do a calll....

  • I was raised in the wilds of the jurassic...my mother was a pterodactyl and my father a brachiosaurus. My scream is actually dinosaur speak, it is how we communicate with each other when we are hungry. Metal stole our language and I AM HERE TO TAKE IT BACK!

  • your lows are raw as fuck player

i honestly dont understand how to do it and idk what technique i use....but i think i sound good haha

    your highs sounds like oceano

  • Awesome, So Demonic!!

  • yah dude its inhale... dont try and fool anyone :o that both your highs and lows... you cant fool me =]

  • thats not fry screaming, its inhale -.-

  • none of these are inhales, at all. Can't you read the over 9000 comments I've made confirming it's exhale?

  • when i vocal fry i sound like the fucking grunge lols.

  • Yeah that's how it sounds a lot of times when under-developed. The problem with a lot of videos is all they show you is the grunge sound and go "okay kids have fun with your fry scream"! I've been plagued with swine flu and have a cough so I can't scream at the moment but I mean to make a new vid as soon as I get some time.

  • Whitechapel doesnt vocal fry hahah noob, do it without a mic, itll show the actual sound, when you scream witha mic it makes it sound a shit load better, thats why i cover my w/out mics to show raw talent, which you look like ur good, but i cant tell on the lows man. =/

  • Uh first, I have another vid without a mic. Second, Whitechapel does use vocal fry. Do you have their old EP's? It is incredibly obvious. And third, get the stick out of your ass man, "noob"? For at worst getting Phil's vocal style wrong? (which I did not, by the way).

  • hhaha chill i wasnt critisizing you, and stick out of my ass? Really? And no they don't use vocal fry, its just he pitched shifts a lot in all of his albums, and especially ep, his highs do sound like frys, but theyre not he just doesnt have great highs hahaha. And i saw ur vid, w/out frys, im not one to go to ppls profiles and look at all of their vids, i dont have the time.

  • Comment removed

  • I can do inhale but I suck so bad at exhaling xD I gotta watch your vids on exhaling lol. great vocals btw :)

  • Please make a video explaining how to do this, I am not making any progress with anything lol. I fail pree bad aha.

  • sorry just saw you already had :P

  • Please make a tutorial :) I do the high fry's very well and have been doing them for a really long time but I would very much like to know how to do the lows cause I just can't get there.

  • U are elite at vocal fry I think, way better than me but that ain't hard, Im really bad and I'm trying to get help off youtube vids 2 but they not very good for explaining if ur not doin it rite or watever.

  • How long does it take to master the vocal fry technique? it dosent feel like im geting anywhere with it

  • I red it can take 1 year or more to master it

  • your high pitched fry sounds like the black dahlia murder guy. i can get the lows but i cant reach the highs, is this because i have a limited range or is it something that just needs practice? also how do you get your fry to sound so demented cos mine kinda sounds like randy blythes roar atm. send me a message if u have any advice.

  • yeah but randy has the best metal scream ever haha so it's cool.

  • thanks a lot man :D you helped me a lot :D

  • i'm sorry can you please explain me differences between vocal fry and fry scream ...because i can fry scream but it sounds like melissa cross one...not really like your one...(sorry for my english i'm italian)

  • Don't be sorry, vocal fry and fry scream are the same technique, just different words being used. This is the same technique that Melissa Cross uses and teaches, how it develops for each person affects the end sound though.

  • ur pretty good at it but the tutorial sucked.

  • I agree, I've been meaning to make a new video that really shows how to do the technique, I've been mega busy with college.

  • damn dope ass lows

i can do it that low sometimes but after i swallow it goes away

    am i doing something wrong?

  • Can you make a step-by-step tutorial on how you do it? I know how that cat fry works but is there anything you're feeling in your throat? like a vibration or a kind of "phlegm"?

  • Considering you favorited Zen of Screaming, bring me the horizon, suicide silence, and attack attack, all bands/tutorials on exhaling, I think you just posted that to troll. XD.

  • hahaha dude inhales are good and all but they mess up ur throat man, i exhale and i can make all the inhale "sounds" and brees exhaling plus i can do reg exhale screams which are waaayy better man.

  • dude im interested :P

  • inhale right?

  • Nope! Vocal fry is an exhaling technique. Everything I do is exhale.

  • I thought my phone was vibrating at the end lol

    Nice lows though.

  • fuck yeah, that's tight finally good shit haha stick with dem lows ;]

  • ATR doesnt use fry. his highs might be but his lows arent.

  • def not

atr is all false chord death chord

hes one of the best at it

  • atr = all that remains? i thought they did. what kind do you think they use? not trying to be an a hole, just curious

  • its definetly false chord. or death wutever. but u can tell by the gargles in his scream

  • ah, thanks. i never really paid much attention to the gargles in screams.

  • dude you sound like a fucking monster.

  • HA! Thanks man!!

  • ddaaaammn...DUDE your pretty good. haha

  • just a quick question, what mic and speaker system do you use? sounds awesome man, keep it up.

  • Thanks man!! As for the "speaker system", I'm actually just using a Vox AC50VT guitar amplifier, using an adapter to convert the XLR of the mic to a 1/4" male pin to put into the input of the amplifier. From there I put it on a clean preset and EQ it a bit.

My mic is a Samson Q7.

  • anyone that finds this or any "fry" vocals as "talent" needs to check themselves into a mental ward ... and for the record , this type of singing has NOTHING to do with "METAL"

  • Oh no! Classic rock fan hates something that is new and different! What a surprise! Sorry there are people who listen to music that doesn't conform to your "definition" of metal.

You can listen to what you want, nobody's stopping you! I think Tom Petty and SVR have a lot of talent. But even if I didn't think that I wouldn't say "OH MY GOD YOU'RE STUCK IN THE PAST YOU ARE AN IDIOT".

  • PS. had* concerning SVR. I wasn't going to allow a simple grammar mistake because I know how classic rock fans have an ego and think they know everything and assume that everyone who doesn't agree with them knows anything. "OH MY GOD SVR DIED IN 1990 YOU IDIOT". XD. I see it now..

  • This. Backed hard.

  • And if you're actually 43 (like your profile claims), don't you have anything better to do than whine about some 18 year old idiot screaming into a microphone? Like a job on a Thursday afternoon? o_O.

  • i'm not whining mr no talent ... merely making a obvious observation that what your doing in this video doesn't take any kind of special talent ....

and i'll state again , this isn't Metal .. not even close to being Metal

  • I never claimed to have any talent, thanks though! Great observation. "Mr. No Talent", what an epic insult! I'll make sure when I'm having my midlife crisis that I start fights with kids on the internet who listen to shitty new music and bust their balls and attempt to lower their self esteem so I feel better!

Go ride a Harley or something, dude.

  • You are whining. Sorry, but your complaining that this isn't "Metal" When nobody really cares.

Thats whining. Sorry to break it to you. Dude do you honestly know how stupid you sound right now?

State whatever you want, and we'll do well to make you look and sound like a dick.

    Thanks.

    and btw..lrn2insult.

  • You suck and know NOTHING of screaming. Vocal Fry is 10 times harder then False/Death Chord screaming, or your METAL screaming. And both screams are really good. Vocal Fry is harder and used for more melodic metalcore and screamo and such. Sorry if you don't like it.

And sorry if you didn't notice, but there are people who ACTUALLY like that kind of music.

Shut up and leave, you close-minded know-it-all.

  • fuck yeah man! i love it! :D

so like how do youactually klearn the technique, if you wouldn't mind sharing the secret with me:)

oh and btw did your phone go off at the end of the video? haha!

  • Its no secret!! And I'll check to see if the phone went off at the end of vid, but generally there's no service down there so I doubt it. XD.

I'm just awful at describing it. It's been six months since my last vid though, I think I've actually developed a way on HOW to start the scream when you've never used vocal fry before.

  • haha sorry it's just like an observation that i should have really noticed haha! but yeah its cool no worries, ithink i've established that i can't scream now so....well i'll just leave it and stick to drumming haha! but yeah dude, screw the haters and keep up the good work my friend! :D

  • cupping the mic kinda makes your scream sound deeper and its not metal

  • I have a vid without using any mic.

Oh man I'm not "true metal". My reputation is lost!

    Thanks for watching, though!

  • Heh. That was pretty metal.

  • Pretty good example, Phill Labonte uses false chord technique though, not the fry :P, Matt Tuck from Bullet For My Valentine is an example of a screamer who uses vocal fry. just puttin all that out there :P

  • Actually Phill uses False Chord for his highs Vocal Fry for his lows.

    Pretty cool actually lol

  • I don't think so dude :P, you see it wouldnt make much sense to use vocal fry for lows if you have already accomplished such highs with false chord.... i would understand more if he were to use fry for highs and false for lows but i'm almost 100% sure he uses false all of the time...

  • No dude lol, listen to his lows, totally different then false chord growls.

It would make sense cuz its a different sound.

  • his lows sound nothing like vocal fry ,not at all. i mean an example...have you heard the opening scream in become the catalyst? clearly a false chord low... when i go to learn a song to scream its pretty easy to spot whats fry and whats false

  • or maybe he uses both the techniques for hs lows? i mean who are we to judge..?

  • No listen closely, do you hear his own voice. They are really closely related.

Listen to August Burns Red's lows, sound kinda close to All that Remains.

Its hard to spot with lows actually, because they are both really the same concept.

  • yeah, august burns red are false chord as well, jake uses false chord for both but as oppose to the average sounding scream he makes his sound "choppy" . and yeah its pretty hard to spot when it comes to lows, but not impossible

  • Ok Im going to have to say no to that.

August Burns Red DEFINETLY do not do false chord screams. I met them and talked to them, and I asked Jake if he uses vocal fry, and he said "That thing that Melissa Cross uses? Yeah"

  • Well, sometimes with vocalists like Labonte its really hard to tell the difference, I'm not saying I was 100% right. He DEFINITELY uses some false chord, but I think a lot of that is for his mid-ish and maybe lower-highs kinda sound.

Example: In "Empty Inside" I  he uses false chord for the first forty seconds. But I'm pretty damn sure those highs at 39 seconds in are vocal fry. I could be wrong though. I know he did take with Melissa Cross, though who normally supports vocal fry.

  • it would make more sense for screamers who use fry to use it for highs, but yeah.. although melissa cross does normally support fry herself, don't forget that a lot of her students utilize the false chord technique... (ex. Randy Blythe from log, Byron davis from God Forbid), they both take great skill and technique and sound great as well... but i think phil labonte uses it for most of his mid ish lowish and higher stuff, but then again he also probably does use fry for some of his stuff too...

  • oh yeah and dont forget to just open ur mouth wider cuz alot of it is how ur open ur mouth is too

  • good lows bad highs though its not bad to put a little throat in it just push with the diaphragm and do it just like ur lows add a little raspiness to it

  • Yeah I think my highs blow in this video. DO me a favor and check out my other vid and see if the highs are any better? I haven't made a video in months, I keep meaning to make a new one soon.

  • Yeah I don't know anything about Cobain's screaming to be honest, I should say nothing. XD.

  • Yeah I just posted on a basso profundo vid that it sounded like oooonnne looong burp. i sometimes want to scream like cobain. but it'll probably ruin my voice.

  • If you screamed like Cobain for every single song the entire song, it could ruin your voice. But if you screamed in the way Cobain scream and balanced it well with singing like he did, I think you'd be alright.

  • have you heard the vocals from SUFFOKATE? that's what your lows sound like.. AND I would like to learn(: please and thank you

  • if this involves breathing in no way am i ever doing this. but man your good keep it up but be very weary of your voice you don't want to lose it mayne

  • If this involves breathing? Don't you breathe anyway? :P.

I'm not worried, vocal fry screaming is pretty easy on the voice. I've taken voice lessons too and sing pretty often. Not metal kind of singing either, normally very soft acoustic kind of singing.

  • He means inhale screaming

  • HA! I figured he meant that but was kinda more tempted to be a smartass, though I honestly wasn't sure. XD. Thanks!

  • AH, so you were asking if this is inhaling? No, vocal fry is an exhale technique. Everything I do, EVERYTHING, is exhale.

  • Pretty good.

Try to get lower. Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel sounds like straight toilet flushing at his lowest.

  • Yes sir! My scream is always a work in progress. I agree, I am not near as good as Phil and most likely never will be! Thank you for your honesty!

  • The human abilities should always be a work in progress! Strive to be your best and push the limits of what is sought to be impossible.

You're actually quite good at this. Keep up the good work, but don't screw your voice up while doing it!

  • BTW, I am no sir. I am of the female gender. Haha.

    But it's ohkay.

  • I do not classify this as vocal fry. The vocal fry is a register that pedagogists use to classify the human voice register that sounds below the modal voice register. What you are doing is something similar to Tuvan throat singing -you are adding partials to the fundamental pitch, creating overtones and multiphonics in your voice by screaming with a certain tension in your chords. You are able to sound good while doing this because you are peaking the mic.

  • I removed my comments because I sounded like a total asshole, when in reality I was just in a really crummy move and you caught me at a bad time! Sorry! In short, its only considered vocal fry by screamers as slang, but your information is honestly very useful!! I'm not sure why I brushed it off so much before, even if I did think you were being egotistical. Hopefully the words of a hormonal 18 year old didn't offend you!

  • hey man, im really feeling the lows, i saw the debate thing with the guy about cupping the mic. but music is what it is, if its gives you a better sound and you can do it live, use it. i have been using the other style of scream for 3 years, learned frys and now i love them wayy more than my old screams. im just working on volume. i have a question that has killed my soul for ever......what style does Tommy Rogers from Between the Buried and Me use? frys? inhales? i have no clue.
