Brian Wilson transcends genius-His chords and arrangements are just beyond anything else. In a way it reminds me of "Spinal Tap" and the "Lick My Love Pump" thing. Forget the goofy girls, or car stuff, just listen to the chords and harmonies. We had the Beach Boys long before the Beatles, but their sweetness wasn't really appreciated till later. @danrontay "Girls on the Beach" is an emotional bath of achingly gorgeous harmonies - it's hard to believe that Brian Wilson wrote it in February of 1964 - some of the modulations are quite advanced for that period (or any period). I agree that it is one of the greatest songs in pop history, conveying a timeless warmth and rapture.

Its intense yet serene richness of feeling shows today's music for the utter trash that it is by conmparison.

The genius part is that there are about 4 key changes, including one mid-verse. Like Mark said, virtually nobody was doing that in 1964, let alone a "pop" band singing about surfing. Brian did things musically that up until then, pop groups just didn't think of.
