@ariesmindworks - i agree that they could all do better, but disagree that they give nothing. If anything I think they are badly documented - and yes i bypass so called drupal ways myself. As you say, Pick 10 lines of code over 10 megs of bloat. Now that's mantra i can agree. With limitations, warnings, and disclaimers. :-).
if panels or ctools had ended up in core, it would be time to leave drupal for a different system. they're both massively over-engineered, poorly documented, and buggy as hell. whether you can even even get it to run on a given drupal instance is a total crap shoot.
@ericscoles oh come on. I might agree that the versions in 6 are not very user friendly. At the same time nearly every major drupal 6 site that's come out in the last 6 months is using panels and ctools -- and those sites seem to be running just fine.
@nicklewisatx I have to agree with @ericscoles. Ctools, Panels, Rules and Views gives nothing for the developers. We did fast webapps with XHTML2 and RDF support before these tools appears, we weren't afraid of writing 10 lines of code instead of installing a 10 MBs of bloat. These are wonderful options for those are don't know how to code, but we choosed Drupal because we wanted a KISS CMS, not the PHP implementation of the Sun One...
Damn ... It just really doesnt work the same when you understand german... Haha ;)
