I was caned as a child. As a result I resolved (1) to be more careful about getting caught, (2) never to even threaten my children with physical violence and (3) to immediately break the nose of any barbarian proposing to beat me with a stick.
I never did get caught again, so have not had to break anyone's nose. My children are wonderful and well behaved - intelligence wins over brutality every time.
We've removed pain from punishment and looked what's happened....if it ain't broke....don't fix it........The kids who killed little Jamie Bolger didn't even get a smacked arse....there are some people for whom nothing else works and if pain was reintroduced in to punishment the prisons would empty very quickly and anti social behaviour would be such a small problem it wouldn't even make the newspapers.. A besieged pensioner would only have to threaten phoning the police to cause a scatter.
they say that "where there is no fear, there is no respect" but I feel for teachers and what they have to do...I for one am very grateful to live in a country that allowed me to be educated,to be able to read and write and add up,,,something that in the past I took for granted...
I'm a student myself and I agree that the cane should be brought back. First of all these panellist's seem to think that's it's cruel and barbaric, they talk as if every student would be caned, however this is not the case as only the barbaric children themselves would be caned. By caning these students they'll realise that they are not untouchable and would submit to the teachers wishes, also the kids that rebel against the teachers authority are the type of kids who can only respect violence
It's dishonest to use the excuse that if you use the cane on kids there would be more violence. It's because everyone wants a "quick fix." This is why they are resorting to throwing money at teachers to fix it. You simply start the rules in primary schools and let the new rules follow the children as they get older. The truth is, it was a mistake and many don't want to admit it and now are afraid of the children.
Why do all these against corporal punishment think that their kids will be the ones to break the rules and have to be punished.
They will argue with you that their child is an angle but desperately fear their very own child will be the one receiving punishment for doing something wrong. I think they know more about their kid than they are letting on.
This is nonsense that to give teachers raises and smaller classes will changed the kids from asulting 50% of all teachers.
Teachers are no longer a respected job and soon the same will be said of parents.
None of these kids respect teachers unless they were raised good kids at home. In the old days, the kids that came from bad families and good faimlies still had equal respect for the teacher because they both knew they could be disciplined... Yes, it was the threat.
how can childrens behaviour get better when politicians like harriet harman are promoting women to fuck their husbands off. reports show that the worst behaved kids in the country come from broken homes.
i think that bringing the cane back will just increase violance in schools, if a teacher caned a student then they would probs just fight back, and then there would be that small minority of teachers that would abuse that power.
for everyone who thinks that the cane should be brough back. schools in bad areas of town have students with violent tempers and are likely to respond by hitting the teacher back.
the second it becomes right to beat a child; we will grow up with it as being ok to beat people. how the hell do you think abuse at home starts? wife beating?
if you want the cane back you're wrong in the head.
I'm a teacher - I have been kicked, sworn at, had my door ripped from its upper hinge, and two days ago a kid physically intimidating me approaching me and kicking the door. These kids KNOW teachers cannot touch them, and they are cheeky, rude and nasty. I would like to see more parents and decision makers actually come into a school - actually visit real classrooms and see what kids are like. The truth would really hurt and prompt strong action.
@jlandles I agree with you , that does happen,But honestly there is a very small percentage of students in each year which do physicaly assult or intimiadte teachers.
Most of thoughs students are in the bottem sets and they do that because they are bord as they are constently learning the same thing, another reason is because the teachers look down on them and treat them like babys.
I guess you would get it from all years but honestly its not all students which you , your self should know.
The only way children of this moment will respect their teacher's is if they respect their parent's, since that is absent the need to re-evaluate how to apply positive authority is fundamental. But only an efficient government could implement that!

The only teacher that has to use an implement such as this is an imbecele, a bully and totally incompitent at their jobs. Is it really always the children who are at fault or the pathetic school system that fails them?.
Teachers should be allowed to do their job unruly and expelled pupils should be sent to a school within a police station.
OUTSTANDING Jenny! She is right on. caning was the most barbaric thing in the history of discipline. MANY better ways to give the kids consequences as well. As Yasmin states, CLEARLY Euorpean children far better behaved, and they do NOT physically punish students!
so basically its ok to control someone with violence nice...

I remember some of the teachers at my school. They were nerdy little men that wouldn't of been able to do shit.
Some of them barely came up to my shoulders. Years ago teachers tended to be ex forces/big men.

haha, good luck with that. The kids are over 6 foot nowdays and bring knives to school. If it was brought back it would create more trouble.
Kids are getting worse these days but it's a very deep subject.
The world is a different place these days and kids can be influenced by far more media types.
There is no solution as society it'self is getting more & more violent.

if you bring back the cane theres going to be shootings and stabbings involving teachers
People today do not give a shit anymore
and parents arent allowed to smack their own children so schools being given the power to do so is just fucking stupid

IF THE CANE STILL EXISTED THERE WOULDNT BE SHOOTINGS!!
i dont not think it should be as bad as it used to be.
AND CORPORAL PUNISHMENT - I DO NOT MEAN BEATINGS!! THATS CRUEL!!
JUST A SLAP ON THE LEG!!!
THAT WOULD STOP THE WHOLE RACE OF CHAVS!!!

If schools in UK cane children the way they do as the way they do it in Singapore, many people would think twice before they reinstated it in the UK.
