@tchaikovsky27 I have had this album since it was first released. It remains one of my top ten all-time favorites, and I couldn't count how many times I have heard this song. But I went to 0:45 to listen to what struck you... and chills went down my spine. Absolutely agree; her voice (and her phrasing and her control) is (are) unbelievable.
the most affecting feeling in music, I think, is a certain yearning sensation that combines joy with a deep sadness (and a little bit of every other emotion bundled in there as well). just devastating..
I mean how do you describe the feeling of this song? I remember reading somewhere... this description of "ecstasy", as being an experience where you feel all emotions at once, like you want to cry and laugh madly all at once. Elizabeth Fraser's voice has that feeling to it. so does this song.
@dreamtransmissions I like that description of Ecstasy. If you see all the colors in the spectrum at once, you're looking at white light. Not to get too mystical but that was the first thing that popped into my head when I read that. The sum being greater than it's parts?
Mitchell is the alpha and omega of female singer songwriters, and probably up there in the top five of the best of ANY singer-songwriters ever (the Beatles, Paul Simon). Everyone (without exception) who has come after her owes her a huge debt. Her songs and vocals are as astonishing and singular and iconoclastic as they were when they were first recorded. "All I Want" is a brilliant example. Thanks for uploading it.
@Rossonero072213 I read somewhere that James Taylor was really the first "singer-songwriter" He tells the story of his audition for his first record contract. It just happened to be Apple Records and it was Lennon and Mcartney that signed him! He was apparently the first artist the Beatles signed To Apple Records. Kind of a mind-blower I thought!
The person who started the singer-songwriter movement was Dylan himself, although I don't think he was really ever part of that movement. But, yeah, James Taylor was with the Beatles during their recording of the White Album. Lucky lucky bastard.
@bastardfingers You are a fool . And I say that lightly . Bob Dylan IS, if not THE most influential music writerof all time . He has inspired many many bands , and musicians . His music is perhaps covered more often than any other artist. His inspiration crosses many musical barriers . You can find it in Folk,Singer songwriter , Soft Rock ,Rock,Hard Rock,Heavy Metal, Avaunt Guard ,Jazz, Blues, Pop , Shoegaze, Brit-Pop, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, And even Classical , along with Soundtracks .
@kbdevo1962 Nah you know nowt dumbo, and I DON'T say that lightly. Joni is right, Dylan is a phoney. It's good he's there though. He draws out the fools.
Seriously? She has said numerous times what a huge influence he was on her. She's called him, and Leonard Cohen, her 'pace runner.' It's fine if you don't like his music, but to deny and dismiss his tremendous legacy and influence is pretty ignorant. Dylan secured his place as the most important musical artist of the second half of the twentieth century 40 decades ago.
@kbdevo1962 Like You ! Tell that to the Beatles... Without Dylan they would have never evolved . You can TRY to call him a phony all you want . But there IS enough evidence to BACK UP what I am saying . Playing favorites will never let you win this argument .
@bastardfingers Never enough space in these boxes ! Jimi Hendrix got famous covering Dylan tunes . I can't stand Springsteen but I'd Imagine he has covered more than a couple of Dylan tunes . Manfred Mann has also covered a Bunch of Dylan tunes . It has NOTHING to do with Fashion ( Anyone that tells you different has no brains and belongs with the Hipster crowd . So If it was only fashion why are some of the most noted artists around covering his music ? Because HE IS THAT GOOD !
@Rossonero072213 That's a tough one - was he singer-songwriter or was he folkie? Certainly when you use the term singer-songwriter you immediately think of James Taylor, Carol King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, etc; I wouldn't say Dylan comes immediately to mind. To me Dylan stands apart from those classifications in a way the Beatles can't really be crammed into a category either. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you, just that it's an interesting discussion to have.
I wouldn't classify him as a singer-songwriter in the 70s mold (although Blood on the Tracks has to be one of the greatest albums in that genre, or any genre), but I think he really invented the whole movement while never becoming a part of it. And he did it on Freewheelin', think of a song like Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.
@Rossonero072213 THAT actually was the song that was in my head as I was typing which made me rethink my stance. Then I just said hell with it and posted. Blood on the Tracks is definitely of the 70s singer-songwriter fashion but again, Dylan seems to move from genre to genre fluidly and with varying amounts of success.
Yeah, which is why I said that he invented the genre without ever really becoming a part of it. The 70s singer-songwriter scene would've been very different without his influence, Joni, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon et al. have said as much. Although, I think that at heart Bob's a tragic folk musician.
@Rossonero072213 I'll throw another one in there just to mess things up - Gordon Lightfoot. Some of his really early stuff is right out of that genre and he didn't really join it until the 70s.
@Rossonero072213 Yes and no. I think he plays both. Stuff like Cotton Jenny and Early Morning Rain are definitely folky and then If You Could Read My Mind and For Lovin' Me and other things are in the spirit of singer-songwriter. If You Could Read My Mind is just a brilliant song no mater what genre you put it in.
Taylor Swift's arm lyrics brought me here!

Sort of... I found her music through J Dilla. Greatest poducer that ever lived =D
He sampled ''Joni Mitchell's - Big Yellow Taxi'' to make ''Janet Jackson's - Got Till It's Gone'' maybe you've heard it?

Instead of arguing about who started the singer-songwriter revolution, just research to see whose song or album was released first.
