Volvo has the most securest car in the world,it has now comparation with renault witch I think is a pice of crap just like fiat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!stupid videooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
@TheGeoadamson I'm quite bad understanding you. Because I'm from Russia. I've got a 1976 RWD carburetor car that have got 0 of 16 in Euroncap and non ABS, EBD, ESP and other things.. And summer tires even in our snowy and sleety winter. And i'm still alive without any crashes. Because I well know how to drive a car, I'm a good driver. Good driver doesn't require an electrpnic supports and safety because he can avoid any crash in all conditions.
Most collisions are NOT head on for a start. As a Volunteer Firefighter I KNOW just how hard Volvo's are to cut apart in a collision beacuse of the superior construction and high tensile steel used. I will gladly take the Volvo. Air bags are over rated and the 940's WERE fitted with them (in Australia at least), so were the Swedish 740's. Had a side impact with a Scania truck in my 740 and despite the fact that all 4 rims were buckled by the impact, the back axle was a banana, I walked away.
@karlrobbers Yea, both the 700 series and 900 series has airbags in all countries. They where optional tho, so the person buying the car from the manufacturer decided if he or she wanted airbags.
AND! How do you know that Volvo wasn't rebuilt? Sure, it could have a clean title, but it could have been put back together with crap parts without telling ins.
My crazy mom drives Volvo 940 Turbo (made in 1998) for 10 years already. Been in 2 car accidents at 80 km/h, just minor scratch on the front bumper both times. Do not know what happened to first opponent, but second one - Mitsubishi Lancer was in repair for 2 weeks. Also escaped accident just 2 weeks ago, the car is very manouverable and can escape the worst hit position quickly. Mom is thinking about changing it into Volvo XC90. But she is not sure yet. Volvo 940 is just the safest tank around!
@Obiwan4682 A car is not safe when it don't get a scratch. If the car don't bend to absorb the energy from the crash, then either the thing the car hits has to, or it will be channeled straight to what and who is inside the car.
That is why modern cars look like train wrecks after collisions at minor speeds. It absorbs the energy, rather then sending it elsewhere. And in case you hit a hard wall or a lamp post, that will be the passengers inside who has to take the knock.
Look how these cheap miserable junks try to manipulate people. Why the Volvo is without engine!????? I don't know who pays for this vomit, but I will send this to volvo!!!
FaiL! No Air bag and no Engine in the VOLVO! The engine is part of the safety system in the 940 series and the 940 came standard with DUAL front airbags so the occupants should have been ok.
@MrSponge1985 i got two 940s and neither of them have airbags. the engine is longitudinal so the modus went down the side of the engine, it didn't hit the engine front on.
Dude, the 940 was designed in the 80's, and the renault atleast 20+ years later.. my life was also saved by a volvo 1 year ago, this video is just stupid.
AND WHY DOESN'T THE VOLVO HAVE ANY ENGINE UNDER THE BONNET?! Stupid show.
@Bierkameel when ytou get the overhead view you can see an engine. The engine gets pushed all the way back. the same thing happened with the yaris and this volvo.
Realize that the Volvo has it's structual design from the late 1980's. The Volvo 940 went out of production in February 1998. Something should have been better in car saftey since then. I'm not surprised of the result. It doesn't matter if the new car is named BMW 5-series, Citroën C4, Volvo V50 etc. they all are better in saftey than this old "tractor". i would go in the modus, even if the volvo has the engine in it. the modus is much stiffer and stronger than the volvo. in a newer volvo i will go in the volvo.
so basically they are saying that if the modus crashes with a newer and safer car for example with another modus, they all die cuz there is no old volvo to absorb all the energy ? clever...
@wankelFan2 They did not, and even if it had been missing, it doesn't make a difference! The impact just pushes it a bit to the left in this kind of crash...
i r volvo expert. no but seriously. that volvo 940 had a carbon fiber hood... as does my 91 volvo 940 turbo :) 250k+ miles on the odometer. do hektik skids all day every day
If you look at the full episode (Season 12 Episode 2) you can see the engine at 40 minutes and 53 seconds (turn brightnes up). At these frames you can see a 4 cilinder RedBlock Volvo engine. I said this before but it was marked as spam. Why? :P
Renault Modus driver would have had more internal injuries because the car "bounced" off the Volvo, so the impact was more severe. I would rather have been in the Volvo. The 940 was not the best Volvo of that period either, the 850 was. They wouldn't dare crash the Modus into a 1993 Volvo 850, which was named the most safe car in the world that year.
@215alessio Haha, yeah I was just going to say that the Volvo will need a repair once every two years, and the Renault will need a repair once every two days.
As a Volvo fanboy, I wan't to say that the Volvo actually has an engine.
You can't see it in this short clip but if you download the full episode (S12E2) and pause it at 40m53s, turn the brightness up a bit you actually see a Volvo B230 RedBlock engine.
You can also type "fifth gear - volvo 940 vs modus" in the search on PhotoBucket to find this exact frame.
damn all these fucking people thinking how just beacuse a car is big
that means its a ''tank'' think about this for a sec, if a car is made of sold steel front and back with big old school bumpers and all the the olny place that isn't solid is where you sit where do you think the car is going to absorb the impact?
WHERE THERE IS AN OPEN SPACE AKA THE CABIN.....
newer cars use crumple zones that's why front ends are make out of plastics, and why bumpers are made from several pieces
@marcvie9 why do you all think this is some kind of conspiracy to make people buy new cars?? Sereously, just because it's heavy and looks like a cereal box doesen't mean it's a tank duh
The Volvo is actually 100% stronger than the vile Renault because they obviously took the steel bar poles out of the Volvo just for marketing the Renault. I love Volvo's.
@TheGeoadamson Off course the Volvo is much better, that's a real car instead of that ugly piece of shit with a front that looks like a rat's face..Renault is owned by the French gouvernment, if they can spare a few euro's using bad quality material they won't let it, they are unreliable, love to catch fire and have poor quality electronics, plastic parts like doorhandles and bumpers look like 20 years old after the first year, it's the most crappy car you can buy, i'd rather buy a Lada or a Kia
just marketing, they removed engine and all heavy stuff from below volvo bonnet ... if the volvo would be a road worthy the result would be so different :)
@radecki73 Hey mate, off course it's marketing..it's simply impossible what is shown, the modern cars have safety beams, that's true. But the rest of the body is tinfoil and plastic, old cars are made of thicker steel, have real bumpers instead of painted giftpaper..and old cars are much more roomy, my sister in law had a severe car crash a year ago, driving a Peugeot, the cage was undeformed, buth she broke her arm because the enormeous plastic dashboard hit her very hard when it came loose..
I don't think the Renault is "cute" at all. In fact, I think it's an ugly piece of shit and the Volvo is way more classy.
But I'll admit I'm impressed and surprised by the results. Although the Volvo is old, I would have expected better.
Some numbers would have been good, though. The Renault gets thrown around a lot more--that must count for something. And rust may be a factor (as I suspect it is in the Bel Air test where you see a cloud of rust, but that's another story).
Search for Renault on fire, and convince yourself...and then ask yourself wat will happen more frequently driving a car, a severe accident or a daily drive..i won't choose a type of car that will cath fire that easy and frequently, euro ncap 5 stars or not!
@MrMizrahi78 fucking hell dude, are you on commission from Volvo or something? Or are you one of these weirdos that is sexually attracted to inanimate objects, and Fifth Gear has insulted your fuck buddy 940?
@MrSpike13 The kind of comment that you have makes it all clear, you have the brains and the thoughts of a 13 year old..that explanes your nickname, way of thinking and typing idiot comments, you little kid.
And no, i'm not payed by Volvo, and no i do'nt want to put my dick in the cars exhaust, you sick little fuck.
Please crash yourself in your dull, stupid Vauxhall rustbucket, wich belongs on a scrapyard for several years. My Volvo will still go when your rustbucket is already a coke can.
And last but not not least, i searched for volvo crashtest on the internet the last few days..i watched several crashtests of these old 700 and 900 series, even when the Volvo's are falling of a cliff, they won't deform that far as shown on this crappy film, it's simply impossible, and with a head on head collision of two equal types of old big square Volvo's, where the very big engine blocks should run into the passenger room, if i should believe the test versus the Modus..it doesn't happen!
I would like to see another test, crash a (original and complete) Volvo 940 on the backside of a Modus, i think the rear bumper of the Modus wil be somewhere under the frontseats..a head on head collision is also a stupid test, high speeds are mostly driven on the motorway and a head on head collision is very rare over there.
And wath about passive pedestrian safety? lot's of caremakers develop car's with softer frontparts today, Citroën is very far with it! I wouldn't like to be hit by a Modus.
Much more people die in Renaults because this carbrand is famous to catch fire, actually they are topscoring with that phenomenon...the electronics are world famous about there unreliability after a while..i bet the testvehicle over here won't be that safe after a few years, i doubt also if the people who have a head on head collision won't die due to internal bleedings, a human body can't handle an impact that big, caused by such a stiff car.
@water0x00 You really do'nt have to sweare or insult people here, it's a fact that the old 940 wich is based on the older 740 series doesn't have any ncap rating, but as clear on the film, and VERY clear when zoomed in, the Volvo does mis some significant parts, if i look under the bonnet of my estate, i see enough thick steel beams and bodywork, the Volvo would crumple more then the modus, but the way it does on the film is unreal. however..does anybody know how much people die in Renaults?
@MrSpike13 Yeah dude, and that's a comment from somebody who drives a vauxhall? if there is one car which is brilliant in bad handling, having no image, no design, bad quality steel, poor looks and a real wannahave for people over 70 years old then it's a vauxhall...damn! here in Holland it's called Opel, a stupid old fashioned GM product, driven by 100 tousends of very old folks, on the wrong side of the road at very low speed, people with taste wouldn't even drive it for free, rustbuckets!!
The people with the Volvo comments:- The point of this excercise was to compare old type v's new type of body construction. New Volvo's are built like the Modus. End of.
Volvo already build safe cars in the fifties, the only safe French car then was the Citroën DS, with safety steering colum, disc brakes, plastic dash and a design that made the engine shove under the body with a frontal crash and a very safe roadholding due the hydraulic self levelling suspension, wich allowed to drive the car on 3 wheels...Peugeot and Citroën are the best French cars, Renault is an ugly piece of crap with poor quality plastics, bad engines and unreliable electronics..
The Volvo has a very big engine, where is it then on the film?
I own a 940 estate myself, a few months ago a 2010 Renault megane crashed on the back of my car, where it is not as half as strong and heavy as at the frontside..
Result; Renault totally wrecked, engine dislocated, and the driver broke his wrist.
Volvo estate; backdoor dented, left backlight broken, bumper broken and lower backpanel dented...Volvo for life.
@Cucarachamlya your comment makes no sense at all. Of course it feels fine, it's a Volvo. But the video is about the changes in car construction the car companies made throughout last 20 years. It doesn't mean 5th gear hate volvos. And they choosed Renault cos it makes one of the safest cars nowadays.
@nicholausdiablo If they want to sell more new cars, it doesn't mean that good cars should be dishonored. They can show us results of crash tests, but i don't understand why they denigrate others. (Sorry for my english)
Hey fifth gear. Next time you do a crash between two cars, don't remove one of the cars engines and then proceed to tell us a french shopping trolley is safer.
if you remove the engine, 200 kilograms of steel punching in the modus are missing. I'd like to see the same test with the modus having no engine, and the volvo having one...Fifth gear just sucks...
it should be less about car crashes and more about not having a crash. i nearly got ran off the road today when some fucker in a 4wd was using the wrong side of the road. I wasnt willing to let that box on wheels smash up my pride and joy. but for Gods sake learn to drive. theres too many people out there who simply cant.
Why does a car always have to be big to be considerded a (real) car for an adult man? The smaller the car, the easier to to get anywhere. A lot of villages in the Italian Alps for instance have roads so narrow that you crash your mirrors on both sides of your 940.... not with a Modus. So, what's the real car then? A big car with a limited road ability, or a smaller, but still comfortable and spacious car you could get everywhere with?
@HondArd Drive whatever suits your need. There's nothing wrong with taking in other factors in consideration choosing a car. With that being said, the Volvo looks way more badass than the Modus. Would only drive the Modus if someone gave it to me for free or I paid less than 500$ US I don't care how much its worth. Its just flat-out ugly in my opinion.
The "Die hard" Volvo lovers will say this test is rigged..The car has been tampered with etc etc.. The fact of the matter that ALL cars have got safer since this Volvo 940 was in production. I drive a Vauxhall/Opel corsa 2010 Year model.. It would probably beat this vintage old Volvo in the same test (Have a look on NCAP if you don't believe me) The current generation of Volvo cars are ultra safe. Car safety has moved light Years since this old 940 was in production. FACT!
@71shoelover I love Volvos own a 780 but I am in touch with reality time has moved on and so has safety. Volvo pioneered much of the common safety features and still lead the pack. If the comparison was between a Renault LeCar of the same vintage as the Volvo 940 it would take a week to find the LeCars Parts
@janetmerner Very well said (nice rare car Volvo 780 Built in Italy I believe) I also HATE French cars BTW..This video shows that what once was the safest is todays "Death trap" Surely it is a good thing that MOST car makers have pulled there socks up on car safety. I drive a 1.3 Litre Diesel 2010 Year model Vauxhall/opel Corsa. It is a good thing that I can choose a car that averages 63 MPG and has great crash protection.
I drive a 940 s. at 17 years old it still runs well and has passed its MOT without problem for years. Accidents do happen but I have never had one as of yet as I pay attention to the road and other cars around me. If there was a car coming at me I would steer away. the 940 has SIPS which push the other car down its length. They have one of the greatest testing plants and has to be seen to understand. Tell me of a car that is still in a good condition and so widely still in use.
I would rather have a safe and sound brand new safety concious Renault Modus with 5*euroncap rating, good amount of airbags, and specially designed crumplezones than a volvo 940 with pedals that push up your legs, footwells that leave the driver and passenger at serious risk of injury,a steering wheel that puts the driver at serious risk injuring the face and chest and risk of serious brain damage/concussion, and a front end that pushes the front wheels into the driver and passenger compartment.
I still would pay more for Volvo 940 Estate rather than Modus if they were in the same good condition :) Modus looks like a big shopping cart more than a car for adult man :D
Volvo always wins in safety! This 940 definitely had some serious crash before. That's a whole secret :D
@uneame I know that modern Renault cars are very solid and safe for people inside them but I ment '80 and '90 were Renault was far far behind Volvo in safety. IMHO Renault bulit this car based on euroncap tests procedure. The goal was to score maximum points in each test and they did it pretty well. Nice job of course. I am just big older Volvos fan so try to understand me a little on this one ;)

Even thought, Vovlo 940 was designed in 80`s, it predates the era in passengers safety. This "test" should be renamed to "Renault Advertorial". Why?
Because Volvo has no engine under the bonnet!
So, it`s obvious that it will be squashed like egg-shell even by bicycle.

This test wasn't meant to prove that renaut is better then volvo.
It was meant to prove that new cars are safer then old ones.
Also, Euroncap doesn't crashtest cars at 80 mph.
I'd also chose the volvo of the two, Not because it's safer, but nicer, and more spacious.
And I'm not planning on driving it like a lunatic.

The Volvo is actually 100% stronger than the vile Renault because they obviously took the steel bar poles out of the Volvo just for marketing the Renault. I love Volvo's.
TheGeoadamson 5 months ago
@TheGeoadamson Off course the Volvo is much better, that's a real car instead of that ugly piece of shit with a front that looks like a rat's face..Renault is owned by the French gouvernment, if they can spare a few euro's using bad quality material they won't let it, they are unreliable, love to catch fire and have poor quality electronics, plastic parts like doorhandles and bumpers look like 20 years old after the first year, it's the most crappy car you can buy, i'd rather buy a Lada or a Kia
MrMizrahi78 4 months ago
@MrMizrahi78 Yes you are spot on and i totally agree with you. if both of those cars were road worthy then the renault would be a sheet of metal.
That volvo 940 is a awesome car and it might be big but its better than that renault.
TheGeoadamson 4 months ago
just marketing, they removed engine and all heavy stuff from below volvo bonnet ... if the volvo would be a road worthy the result would be so different :)
radecki73 5 months ago
@radecki73 Hey mate, off course it's marketing..it's simply impossible what is shown, the modern cars have safety beams, that's true. But the rest of the body is tinfoil and plastic, old cars are made of thicker steel, have real bumpers instead of painted giftpaper..and old cars are much more roomy, my sister in law had a severe car crash a year ago, driving a Peugeot, the cage was undeformed, buth she broke her arm because the enormeous plastic dashboard hit her very hard when it came loose..
MrMizrahi78 4 months ago
I don't think the Renault is "cute" at all. In fact, I think it's an ugly piece of shit and the Volvo is way more classy.
But I'll admit I'm impressed and surprised by the results. Although the Volvo is old, I would have expected better.
Some numbers would have been good, though. The Renault gets thrown around a lot more--that must count for something. And rust may be a factor (as I suspect it is in the Bel Air test where you see a cloud of rust, but that's another story).

Rangeroversport12 6 months ago 2
Search for Renault on fire, and convince yourself...and then ask yourself wat will happen more frequently driving a car, a severe accident or a daily drive..i won't choose a type of car that will cath fire that easy and frequently, euro ncap 5 stars or not!
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
@MrMizrahi78 fucking hell dude, are you on commission from Volvo or something? Or are you one of these weirdos that is sexually attracted to inanimate objects, and Fifth Gear has insulted your fuck buddy 940?
MrSpike13 6 months ago
@MrSpike13 The kind of comment that you have makes it all clear, you have the brains and the thoughts of a 13 year old..that explanes your nickname, way of thinking and typing idiot comments, you little kid.
And no, i'm not payed by Volvo, and no i do'nt want to put my dick in the cars exhaust, you sick little fuck.
Please crash yourself in your dull, stupid Vauxhall rustbucket, wich belongs on a scrapyard for several years. My Volvo will still go when your rustbucket is already a coke can.
MrMizrahi78 5 months ago
And last but not not least, i searched for volvo crashtest on the internet the last few days..i watched several crashtests of these old 700 and 900 series, even when the Volvo's are falling of a cliff, they won't deform that far as shown on this crappy film, it's simply impossible, and with a head on head collision of two equal types of old big square Volvo's, where the very big engine blocks should run into the passenger room, if i should believe the test versus the Modus..it doesn't happen!
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
I would like to see another test, crash a (original and complete) Volvo 940 on the backside of a Modus, i think the rear bumper of the Modus wil be somewhere under the frontseats..a head on head collision is also a stupid test, high speeds are mostly driven on the motorway and a head on head collision is very rare over there.
And wath about passive pedestrian safety? lot's of caremakers develop car's with softer frontparts today, Citroën is very far with it! I wouldn't like to be hit by a Modus.
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
Much more people die in Renaults because this carbrand is famous to catch fire, actually they are topscoring with that phenomenon...the electronics are world famous about there unreliability after a while..i bet the testvehicle over here won't be that safe after a few years, i doubt also if the people who have a head on head collision won't die due to internal bleedings, a human body can't handle an impact that big, caused by such a stiff car.
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
@water0x00 You really do'nt have to sweare or insult people here, it's a fact that the old 940 wich is based on the older 740 series doesn't have any ncap rating, but as clear on the film, and VERY clear when zoomed in, the Volvo does mis some significant parts, if i look under the bonnet of my estate, i see enough thick steel beams and bodywork, the Volvo would crumple more then the modus, but the way it does on the film is unreal. however..does anybody know how much people die in Renaults?
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
that volvo is an ugly, slow, bad handling, ugly, ugly old lorry, there's NOTHING cool about an old volvo :)
MrSpike13 6 months ago
@MrSpike13 Yeah dude, and that's a comment from somebody who drives a vauxhall? if there is one car which is brilliant in bad handling, having no image, no design, bad quality steel, poor looks and a real wannahave for people over 70 years old then it's a vauxhall...damn! here in Holland it's called Opel, a stupid old fashioned GM product, driven by 100 tousends of very old folks, on the wrong side of the road at very low speed, people with taste wouldn't even drive it for free, rustbuckets!!

2707ikke 6 months ago
Volvo already build safe cars in the fifties, the only safe French car then was the Citroën DS, with safety steering colum, disc brakes, plastic dash and a design that made the engine shove under the body with a frontal crash and a very safe roadholding due the hydraulic self levelling suspension, wich allowed to drive the car on 3 wheels...Peugeot and Citroën are the best French cars, Renault is an ugly piece of crap with poor quality plastics, bad engines and unreliable electronics..
MrMizrahi78 6 months ago
Hahaha, get real guys!
You think that anybody believes this crappy test?
The Volvo has a very big engine, where is it then on the film?
I own a 940 estate myself, a few months ago a 2010 Renault megane crashed on the back of my car, where it is not as half as strong and heavy as at the frontside..
Result; Renault totally wrecked, engine dislocated, and the driver broke his wrist.
Volvo estate; backdoor dented, left backlight broken, bumper broken and lower backpanel dented...Volvo for life.

HondArd 8 months ago 3
@HondArd Drive whatever suits your need. There's nothing wrong with taking in other factors in consideration choosing a car. With that being said, the Volvo looks way more badass than the Modus. Would only drive the Modus if someone gave it to me for free or I paid less than 500$ US I don't care how much its worth. Its just flat-out ugly in my opinion.
guitarslayer17 7 months ago
The "Die hard" Volvo lovers will say this test is rigged..The car has been tampered with etc etc.. The fact of the matter that ALL cars have got safer since this Volvo 940 was in production. I drive a Vauxhall/Opel corsa 2010 Year model.. It would probably beat this vintage old Volvo in the same test (Have a look on NCAP if you don't believe me) The current generation of Volvo cars are ultra safe. Car safety has moved light Years since this old 940 was in production. FACT!
71shoelover 8 months ago 2
@71shoelover I love Volvos own a 780 but I am in touch with reality time has moved on and so has safety. Volvo pioneered much of the common safety features and still lead the pack. If the comparison was between a Renault LeCar of the same vintage as the Volvo 940 it would take a week to find the LeCars Parts
janetmerner 7 months ago

@uneame I know that modern Renault cars are very solid and safe for people inside them but I ment '80 and '90 were Renault was far far behind Volvo in safety.
