  • It depends what taxes are spent on. Switzerland have lower taxes than Italy, Spain, UK, France, Portugal, Greece and the USA. Yet they have better schools and healthcare. The UK wastes around 30 to 40% of state soending and only spend around 30% on schools and healthcare.

  • @warriorprince1010 A lot of the euro countries have a voucher system, which ensures competition and quality among schools, and is a major reason they do so much better, and their children and people are so much smarter as a result, than ours.

Here private schools are shunned as being a rich people luxury...I see no reason why everyone shouldn't be able to access that kind of quality.

Unfortunately the government monopoly on education is preventing that from happening.

  • @Spjungen The USA finished on a par with most of Europe in eductaion. Only some smaller European countries have betetr eductaion and those are in countries of a few million people. Most of Europe has worse universities, higher unemployment and less wages.

  • A crime scene investigator or a forensic specialist probably does not on average make as much as an investment banker, but who's to say the banker is a "more productive" citizen? I don't understand how people fail to see the way in which such a ridiculous argument falls flat on its face. Higher income doesn't necessarily correlate to higher "productivity", especially with heirs and heiresses like a paris hilton or kim kardashian. How can anyone reasonably quantify "productivity"?

  • If suicide is revolutionary, then yes, the flat tax is a revolution.

  • I find it funny how many if not most of the countries that have taken this flat tax into use, are poor and/or ruled by dictators. This tax wouldn't work for more developed countries.

May I add that Iceland who 'was' one of the worlds richest countries, encountered a financial and political crisis that led their biggest banks and their economy to collapse, leaving them in debt to other countries and giving them a high number of people out of work. Maybe because of this flat tax?

  • this would destroy the bureaucratic administration the IRS.

  • Add Hungary to the list.

  • that loss of incentive allows an elderly widow to afford carers or gas and electric in the winter, in allows less well of families to maybe aford a holiday or just keep up with the bills, or someone just starting up in life trying to save for a house... there is a price to pay for a staggered tax system, but in my opinion, and of those in power in all the civilised world, its a price worth paying...

  • if you dont at least aknowlage and understand what i put then i give up on you lol

  • of the staggered tax system, the argument for a flat tax is unethical....

  • You made 5 comments, and I still don't understand what the fuck you're talking about there.

Dude, pull your head out of your ass, and see the reality.

If all cats start off with nothing, and you make a rule that whoever catches more mice, will have more mice taken away from him (percent-wise) than those who caught less (the current "progressive" tax system), the cat that would have caught more mice would have less incentive now to catch more.

  • @op684 yes i agree he would have less incentive, but not no incentive at all, the incentive is still there as even though you get taxed more than you did before you 'worked harder and earned more', your income will still go up in real terms.... that is the incentive to work. Nobody bar maybe 1 in 10000 would look at a Staggered Tax system and think ''i dont want to work harder because then i will be in the higher tax bracket and have to pay more tax'' because you are still going

  • @op684 to have more income after tax than you did before, even though the tax increased, and the amount your income goes up after the increased tax is deducted is a big enough amount for your to want to earn it ,say 5000... now yes in some systems there is a case for reform of the tax brackets where the income you would earn extra after going up a tax bracket, after the extra tax is a small amount, so the incentive is almost none existant, but that is an argument for a reform not abolition

  • @op684 Haha. I like this analogy. The problem is that no matter how much you dumb it down, they just can't understand...

  • The only thing I don't agree with in the vid is the capital gains tax. Capital gain is first and foremost a PROFIT/GAIN, therefore it should also be subject to a flat tax. ANY GAIN should be subject to the flat tax.

  • moveing frm a staggered to a flat tax rate, the rich pay less, the middle earners pay about the same and the poor suffer the most as they will pay more tax than befre, some may say the poor deserve topay the same as everyone else, its their fault their poor, others will say that just life,i say take a fuc*** look at yourself conservatives, you all say your christians dont you? go and read the Bible again and see if you can figure out why wanting a flat tax rate makes you a twat..

  • @sikmiXXX

No offense, but you're a moron. There can be no sane argument for unequal tax treatment of income/profit. All types of income and profit should be treated equally, because then there is incentive to work more/smarter and make more. That poor person is going to be content with being poor because he knows he'll have to pay higher taxes if he works more/smarter.

A 10% flat rate on ALL types of profit/income... is the ONLY fair tax.

  • @op684 u are a moron lol, no sane argument? take a hike lad... the incentive to work harder is so you have more money, you still get taxed higher, but overall you get more money, incentive sorted.... just because you work hard or are smarter in no way alone dictates how much you will earn, the enviroment you are raised in and the options available to you do, and as the enviroments vary MASSIVLY across the UK (poor/wealthy areas) it creates a situation where people are born disadvantaged..

  • @op684 there will always be exeptions,a person born into a wealthy famly may do poor in life, and vice versa.. but on the whole if you are born in a poor area you will do worse, cleaver or not...motivated or not...

so to some up for you,not thati should bother, your clearly a tory who has his head up his arse, if you do well in life you sould be proud to pay taxes to help less wel off people have a fairer chance in life, ALL MEN ARE NOT BORN EQUAL only are they equal in the eyes of God, good day

  • @op684 sori i just feel compelled to give you a analogy here, its a priy important you understand this..

9 cats around a table, 3 with lots of food(well off), 3 with just enough food(quite well off), 3 with hardly any food at all (not well off at all), all the cats have to give some of their food away... the cats with lots of food have to give aaway the most food out of all the cats, but they wtill end up with the most food left out of all the cats, but wait, now the cats with lots of food

  • want all the cats to give the same amount of food each, even though the cats with hardly any food will now have to give even more food away, and the cats with lots of food already have more than enough food as it is, is this a moral thing to do? ill let you decide...

  • btw please dont just say ' the cats with most food deserve to have more food because they worked harder for it, and the cats with no food have no food because they are lazy'

  • While I do agree factually with the rhetoric in this video, I'd let the facts speak for themselves more. Saying things like "tax codes that penalize the most productive", while true in my eyes, might off turn the very people we're trying to persuade.

  • SCrew you and your flat tax, how about NO taxes? Get a clue and stop being a schill for the power that bees.

  • @LibertyJedi moving towards a flat tax is a step closer.

there will never be the option to just cut all taxes, even though i'd support that too.

  • I use to like Joe Hockey but now I know he's a fool. A flat tax rate? R U serious? Did theu not do Economics 101?

It's got to the point where trained monkeys would be better in the liberal party then what they have now. This is just sad.

  • @pbk718 Watch the video before you comment, whiz. As Dan explains, the Flat Tax would be fairer because everybody pays the same rate, that is nobody is punished for making more money. The rate that the Liberals proposed was granted, high (35%), but that pretty much was the only mistake made there. All they had to do was make the rate that everyone pays a lot lower (like say, 15%), and it would have been more acceptable. Btw, there is no university I know of that teaches ECON101.

  • @OmegaRage Don't make assumptions based on bad info. If you can add and multiply, you'll know that this is a bad idea. All this proposal means is that the richer will pay less than those who earn less as a proportion of their income It's why we've had a progressve tax rate for so long. As for Econ 101, it's a idiom, look it up.

Hey Hockey, i've got some new policy ideas for you; Let's peg the dollar, introduce tariffs on all imported goods and finally, elimintate the poor by printing more money!

  • It's true, there is a global flat tax revolution. Here in Australia there's been a bit of talk about introducing a flat tax after it was recommended by a tax review that was commissioned by the government in 2008 and came out this year. Unfortunately the Labor/Greens coalition (which is left wing) is in government at the moment so we might not see that recommendation come to fruition for at least the next parliamentary term. But we are in debt and desperate times call for desperate measures.

  • what the fuck? Ukraine? Russia? Have sane tax system? These guys don't know a fck what they are talking about, i am very disappointed with cato keeping such morons as their staff

  • flat tax pls

  • America needs to either abolish the income tax and move to a flat sales tax, or adopt a flat income tax of 15% and STOP SPENDING on WAR and SOCIALISM

  • @DracoMalfoy87 See Ron Paul, we can go to no income tax if we reduce government to just the 1992 levels. Say no to taxes! Income tax is unconstitutional!!

  • I know Ron Paul opposes the income tax. Has Ron Paul proposed that sales tax or some other tax would build roads and pay for the military? Roads and military are something that taxes have to pay for. I am not saying getting rid of income tax is a bad idea - I am just wondering what taxes would pay for anything if that happened.

I believe before 1913 or so there was no income tax but there were high tariffs which are also bad. Is sales tax the answer?

  • @DracoMalfoy87 Taxes are already in place for the roads and military. The income tax only pays for the interest on the debt and with all the debt it's not even paying for that now. • @DracoMalfoy87 a good short book to read would be 'economics in one lesson' ... it was written in 1946, but is still as relevant as ever, and since it deals with princples .. not faulty 'correlation-causation', then it surely would be a good read in another 50 yrs from now. read the amazon reviews.

  • fuck taxes

  • You know, whether flat tax is in Americas interest of not, i just don't see it getting passed - and it is because of municipal bonds. If there were a flat tax, municipal bonds would loose the tax exempt advantage that make them able to sell at a lower interest rate relative to comparable bonds. (1) First everyone holding municipal bonds would loose money instantaneously as the price fell, and (2) municipal cost of capital could arguably be to high, in the long run resulting in defaults.

  • flat tax leading to more revenue... listing iceland as a success story

  • @willn89ten it had nothing to do with taxing real businesses; the fail was in unwise investment policy, also known as financial speculations or something

  • Flat tax= workers pay the tax. People with money to invest already cleared from taxes don't get any more taxes on their investments. Good for the rich not for me.

Cato institute should be changed to the Advocates for Restoring the Guilded Age and Sticking it to the Poor. AFRG&SP.

  • Great job! showing us some of the most miserable places as a model to imitate! Then go and live in Georgia, Iraq or Mongolia you moron... Besides, Iceland has has been bankrupted, Kyrgyzstan just lives through a revolution and who knows when the psychopatic President of Georgia will wage the next war, let's spare talking about Iraq. Does't seem to contribute so much to stability your stupid flat tax. :-D

  • Why are there so many viewers from Norway here?

  • Only problem with the flat tax it will send cpa's out of business because the tax forms will be so simple. On the other hand state, and local taxes might be complex and they will still be needed for that. Also some cpa's are multi marketable so that means that they can still get commission from IRA's, and stocks, bonds etc... Still the commissions may be higher because they lose income.

  • The more I learn about Flat Tax the more I like it. I am not a big fan of Fair Tax because there is nothing fair about it. They are simply shifting the tax burden from the consumer onto the business. That is going to hurt private sector business growth with increased taxation. Private business is the lifes blood of this country responsible for 96% of GDP in the US. If we are created equal, we all should be taxed equally. Based on the size of the US, a simple rate of 7% would be GREAT!

  • Good vid... It would be nice if we could move towards a more sensible tax policy.

  • hoodoo961...you should do some research before you open you mouth. The fact is that the EVIL RICH pay the vast majority of the taxes on income, gains, death, etc. You really should do some research before you speak.

  • idm sorry dumb fuck -- depend how they make their money.

If they work for their money -- own a business or have a job for example, they pay very high taxes on their labor.

But if they get it by credit swaps, leverage buy outs, capital gains, ect, they pay no or very low taxes.

Since you don't fucking grasp that, you don't know your ass from a whole in the ground.

  • what percent of actual people do you think do make the vast majority of their money this way?

    it's a very very low(as in sub 1%) figure

and the idea is to lower taxes for all period...get government to spend less and lower their intake and give us less taxes

a 15% across the board would do that...especially since the bottom bracket would probably still pay no tax any how

99.9% would pay this tax...capitol gains is to incentivize businesses to come and offer us jobs

  • Such as it stands, yes, those with the most wealth pay the most wealth in taxes. But the point is that cranks like these guys are trying to change that, so more of the tax burden false on the middle and lower class. You need to learn the difference between what is presently and what will be if certain events come to pass.

  • Why is income earned through work and production worthy of taxation, while income earned through capital gains and investment worthy of exemption? All this crock about a flat or fair tax is merely a scam by the rich in this country to get out of paying taxes at all, so all the burden falls on the middle and lower classes. Institutes like this are financed by small cadres of cranky wealthy men.

  • you are a very silly under informed individual

  • Nope. It is people such as yourself, who have been duped into believing outmoded and false dogmas and maxims, that are "uninformed" and "silly." If you cannot see why this flat tax proposal is a transparent scam, then I don't know what else to say other than that I have some Bear Sterns stock to sell you.

  • and i'll go ahead and sell you some hope and change brother...keep on believe what you want...i think you're wrong and as brainwashed as i'm sure you think i am...so whatevs man

  • i don't understand how people like you can even manage to put your pants on in the morning

educate yourself...and no not by keith olbermann

  • Dirk dumb fuck -- educate this retard.

This goofy fucker in the video tells you its a "flat" tax - but later on explains, by golly, its NO tax on stock profit, credit swap profit, leverage buy out profit, hedge fund profit, ect.

It has ALL taxes paid by those who actually work for a living -- labor, business owners, small business.

So it's not flat is it dumb fuck --

This guy would shit his fucking pants if we had a true flat tax, where all income was treated alike.

  • wow you got problems bro

  • Does somebody have a rope to lynch this fuck, im a icelander and due to this pompus asshole and other fanatics that worpship milton friedman iceland is ruined

  • What are you talking about? Iceland is one of the top ranked countries in the world. Hdi levels.

  • so you have not hord of the economic crash in iceland

  • Your economic illiteracy is evident, government intervention in the economy caused the collapse not Friedman's policies which explicitly reject government interference,

Google: "Iceland's Banking Crisis: The Meltdown of an Interventionist Financial System"

  • Educate yourself. It were the bank regulators that are to blame for Iceland's failure. Protecting big banks and having their friends 'regulate' them and bail them out when they fail is what's the problem. Not the flat tax.

  • @bobbyb1978

the bankers are the problem, we did not bail out the banks we had to save the public and we are not goona bail out the fucking briths

  • Personally, I appreciate the information, because it is exactly & only that, information - Now, what an individual Does with that information is far more important -

(BTW-ANY response to those individuals who are unable to express themselves w/out vulgarity only promotes their posts)

  • Trickle down doesn't work and more proof is obama is using it right now by bailingout the BIG GUYS and not the SMALL GUYS. We should of had no bailout or if any TAXCUTS FOR THE SMALL GUY/businesses

  • The purpose wasn't a trickle down effect, it was to keep the economy from completely collapsing. Small business doesn't exist without loans from large banks, the bailouts were designed to let the large banks stay in business so they could continue lending money to small business owners or people wanting to start a business. Tax cuts for small business would not have prevented a collapse.

  • No the problem is they are proping up these failed companies by wasting even more money. Companies can't become profitable again until they restructure. The way to do that is go bankrupt. Don't listen to mainstream politics.

  • Wrong. Small banks lend to small business. Big banks speculate as they are guaranteed by government. The economy would obviously improve when these big banks would simply be allowed to FAIL as they should instead of being rewarded for excess speculation.

  • Debate? You dumb fuck, Im not debating this bastard, Im exposing it. This is the fucking Bernie Madoff tax plan you fucking idiot. It is a fucking con game you dumb bastardd.

Here is your first clue dumb fuck -- its NOT flat. You got that dumb shit? Its NOT flat. Its ZERO tax for his income dumb fuck. Got that idiot? ZERO.

Then he tells you dumb fucks thats its flat. Guess why he lies dumb fuck? Cause he is trying to screw you dumb fucks.

  • Yes - its not a FLAT TAX at all. Its a fucking farce. I can call my ass a Flat tax -- but I still need it to shit.

Someone needs to wake you dumb fucks up. YOu are sitting there with your mouth open, duh duh duh , acting as if this fuck is talking about a FLAT TAX. FUCK NO, its not flat tax. Its a fucking CON GAME bullshit lie. Its not flat.

This guy would shit a brick if a real flat tax passed - meaning his cap gains paid taxes just like work.

  • Good thing you libs learn so well in school. You may want to give up posting until you learn to speak or write in English.

  • You need to put the emotions aside if you have ever learned how to debate, which is highly doubtful.

To add do you think that a flat tax would work?

  • Errr... Iceland is now bankrupt!!

Other than that, yes a flat tax with no tax offsets or deductions sounds like a great idea.

  • This is a great idea. Much better than the Marxist plans of the Democrat Party.

  • There's nothing showing that regressive/non-progressive taxation is effective as an economic policy. In fact, it's pretty intuitive why progression taxation is better; lower income individuals spend a much larger portion of their income on goods/services, compared with wealthy individuals who invest a larger portion. Unless you buy into trickle down philosophy, which hardly any economists alive believe in.

  • Why do you libs always want to play the Class Warfare game? You have been playing it for over 50 years.

Yes, I do buy into what you libs call "trickle down". I believe that it works in the private sector. You libs also believe in "trickle down" also except you think the government is were things should trickle down from.

  • Democrat dumb fuck -- how about lets play the game of fucking truth idiot.

How about when you say its a "flat tax' that it be FLAT -- not some fucking opposite of flat. How about we start with that dumb fuck?

So this fuck head has a plan he says is FLAT - but its ZERO on his income - and others pay ALL the tax.

Does that sound flat to you dumb fuck?

So he is calling his shit FLAT -- when its not fucking FLAT. WHy dont you pull that out of your ass and explain it.

  • Your posts are not even understandable. Please retake 1st through 6th grade English class. At that point, I will dummy myself down to discuss the issues with you.

  • wow...just wow

you need to go look up some stats man

  • Why do you believe in trickle-down economic philosophy when almost no economists believe in it? There is no data backing it up. I mean, you're free to think that trickle-down is true, but you can't exactly blame myself and others for choosing to agree with prominent economists instead of some random people on the internet.

  • You are correct that a lot of left wing economists agree with your position.

First, what do you mean by "trickle down"? If you mean reducing taxes and lower government spending which will give people, not government more money to save, invest, and spend, I am for it.

If you mean what most libs mean which is let the government take money from some and give to others, then I am against it.

Coolidge, JFK, Reagan, and Bush 43 all lowered taxes and the economy took off.

  • Its so nice to know people can discuss things intelligently, and that they always make claims and support them with evidence. And don't simply yell and resort to personal attacks to win. Or at least make themselves feel like they did.

  • flat tax = awssome ness I stay make it a reallty

  • Notice his own plan is for NO taxes on cap gains, dividends, credit swaps, stock profits, leverage buy outs.

The only tax is on WORK. Dont you see this you dumb fucks? He wants WORK to be taxed -- NOT capital gains. Got that dumb fucks - ZERO tax on his income, but your dumb ass who WORKS would pay ALL the taxes.

Then to confuse you dumb asses, he calls that a FLAT tax. Its not flat if his tax rate is ZERO.. Do you got that dumb fuck?

  • You're kinda abrasive about it, but what you're saying is essentially true. If a flat tax was used to generate the same tax revenue as the government receives currently, almost everyone in the US would see their tax rates go up. Rich people would get richer because they have a much larger portion of their income as capital gains.

  • The mentioned countries will have around -10% growth this year ;)

  • That because they are developing

  • No, because it's a recession.

  • They also had growth rates of some 7-10% growth before the recession.

  • So, dcraneathalpc - what do you think the cure for poverty is? I say it's creating more jobs. Reducing penalties for productiveness, as demonstrated globally, reduces unemployment. When was the last time a poor person gave you a job?

  • msimone dumb fuck -- when is the last time a con artist lied about money?

Pay attention dumb fuck - he is CALLING it flat tax, but its not fucking FLAT you fucking idiot. How fucking stupid can you be? Its NO tax on certain income, but ALL taxes on another income. Do you fucking grasp that yet moron? He should call it FOOL THE DUMB FUCK tax plan, causes its sure fooling your dumb ass.

  • Flat tax -- this guy in the video isnt for a fucking flat tax.

Just because thats the fucking name he gives it -- doesnt mean shit. Look at the details dumb fuck.

His tax is not fucking flat at all. Its a HUGE tax on some kind of income - work mostly. And its NO tax on other income -- his income mostly.

Its typical fucking bullshit -- to fool stupid people. Pay attention to basic details you dumb fucks.

  • You are dead right. So many morons out there, it boggles the mind.

  • I love the idea of the flat tax, but can the UK and US really afford it? We both have massive defecits and debt, and would having a low, flat, and 'tax once' tax scheme generate enough revenue to keep government stable in these times? Obviously we need to keep spending to an absolute minimum, but is that still enough? Your thoughts please

  • the falt tax system is the best for the us.

  • Funny thing is, the right-wing voters, most of whom would actually be hurt by a flat tax, eat this stuff up. Wise up. You're poor too. I can't blame this guy though. It's too EZ when you have the connections to make a killing off shoddy derivatives and inside knowledge. I mean, with a progressive tax, how can he afford his yacht, his hookers, and his coke?

  • We had a revolution over taxation without representation. Now we have representation without taxation for some. If everyone is to participate equally in this government, we need to have a flat tax. No deductions, no excepthions.

  • Is this guy still selling this crap?

He calls his plan Flat tax - its flat my ass. Its as Flat as Dog the Bounty Hunter's wife.

His plan isnt flat -- its a HUGE tax on work, and NO tax on his favorite income: unearned income, dividends, stock options, credit swaps, capital gains, etc.

God bless all income -- but dont fucking sell us this shit of NO tax on your income, and then call it a flat tax.

    Lying creepy bastard.

  • "The commie manifesto'' = the most boring book i have ever read

  • Marx and Engels claimed that, in the effort to create a classless society, a "graduated income tax" could be used as a weapon to destroy the middle class. Through the clever use of language, the government promotes the fraud.

  • Many were to socialists who saw world war I and world war II as a way to get rid of capitalism. The idea was simply to make permanent the system of rationing, price controls and government central planning from the war.

Truman basically saying nuts to you and allowing the private economy to reestablish itself. This is what finally ended the great depression(disaggregate GDP into public and private); '47 was the single best year for the private economy in US history.

  • Why do I read the comments?. . . Here's a thought. If you disagree with the flat tax, the fair tax, or taxes in general, try a little something called DEBATE. It can be done without nasty, hateful name-calling, presumptions about how a man you DON'T EVEN KNOW earns an income, or flagrant misrepresentations of the goals of the Cato Institute, a brilliant group of people who promote libertarian ideas and tackle a whole host of government-vs-individuals issues, taxes being only one of many.

  • The reason why a flat tax isn't fair is that the more income one has, the greater return he can get on each additional dollar. This is because a wealthy person can receive cheaper loans and invest a larger portion of his money. Because of the greater earning potential greater wealth affords you, progressive taxation is the only method that is fair.

  • It is amazing that the commie's understand concepts of capitalism more than most americans.... rather sad really.

  • Maybe that's because they want everything to be equal, as usual, so, equal taxes. If you look at the countries the average income is still extremely low compared to America, etc, and the Russian government, I believe, still controls many aspects of the economy. If you could combine deregulation and flat taxes you would have an extremely rich country

  • CATO has one goal -- to get rid of taxes on unearned income. That's why it exists.

It their wacko world, the self employed,, small business, and wage earners should pay all the taxes. But credit swaps, leverage buy outs, cap gains, dividends, naked shorts -- should pay NO income.

But they can't come out and say that crap -- so they make a bogus "flat tax" that only taxes income from work. All other income isn't taxed at fucking all.

  • Its incredible that the Cato institute feels that the United States can or should model ourselves on these tiny nations such as Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a city. It has no military, no agriculture, and a vastly smaller and more agile population that can respond to change quicker than a big nation.

  • Comment removed

  • Robbing people can't create wealth idiot -- that's what this guy in the video is trying to do.

He is trying to rob people who do the WORK -- who run the BUSINESS - who are self employed,

He wants NO tax on cap gains, dividends, credit swaps, naked shorts, leverage buy outs.

He wants ONLY people who work, who operate business, who are self employed, to pay taxes.

Have the lying bastard in the video pay taxes just like self employed guy pays -- watch him shit his pants.

  • Right on. I wish more people would realize this.

  • Actually dumb ass America had the biggest 30 years of prosperity when we had HIGH fucking tax rates -- not low.

And we didn't have prosperity until we had labor rights,

Clearly you know nothing of tax history.

My point is -- this fuck head in the video is lying. His plan isn't fucking flat at all. He and his buddies would pay NO tax, while workers paid ALL the taxes.

That's not flat fuck head -- thats a con job.

  • You're such a moron; how can robbing people and business's lead to economic growth? The period you're referring to had a boom because of cuts in government spending, and tax decreases. The taxes between 1950-1972 fluctuated between 20%-88% which is far lower than 92% under FDR. Use some common sense moron, I know you're jealous of people smarter and more hard working than you, but you don't have to steal from them.

  • No form of income taxation is "fair." Instituting a "fair" or "flat" tax would only mean higher tax rates for us all, as they are destined to rise over time. Let me put it this way: The "progressive" income tax was instituted in 1914, as a 1% marginal tax rate on the top 5% earners. The democrats wanted to cap the income tax at 10%, but the republicans objected because they thought it would eventually eventually reach 10%. Little did they know that FDR would make it 91% two decades later.

  • Quest for bullshit

No one every paid 91% income tax. Plus, when income taxes were high, US became the wealthiest nation on earth.

Fact is all tax plans have loopholes -- this Bullshit "flat tax": is actually one giant fucking loophole for unearned income --

A real flat tax would make sense -- tax all income alike. thats not what this shit is in the vide -- this con artist calls it flat, but its really ZERO tax for him and his buddies, but very high taxes for workers.

  • The logic of liberals, they believe that high taxes leads to economic growth. The utter ignorance of people who know nothing about economics or history. The reason why we had huge economic growth from the 1950's-1969 was because of the massive cuts in government spending, the top marginal tax rate shifted from around 20%-88%. The stagflation crises was caused when the taxes were reduced for an extended period of time, leading to wage inflation (wages soared). Then unions caused unemployment.

  • The key to Fairtax is bullshit. Fairtax is based in fine print on a massive surcharge that cities and states would have to pay.

Why the fuck does Fairtax hide this shit in the fine print? It woudl be a massive fucking surcharge on all city and state spending.

For example, if a state build a highway for 4 billion -- they would have to give federal government 1.5 billion in sales taxes.

Its fucking NUTS. And they hide this shit.

Google Fairtax absurdity -- learn what shit it is.

  • The only flat tax I support is the Fair Tax. The key to the Fair Tax concept is the rebate. It reduces the effective tax rate for all but the biggest spenders. You have to spend $200,000 a year to pay the full 23% of the Fair Tax. Most consumers never spend more than half of that so, their effective tax rate would never be more than about 12%. The effective tax rate for a 10% state Fair Tax would be around 8%. That's 20% total. Most middle-class consumers currently pay about 33% total.

  • isn't Iceland bankrupt?

  • Oh sure it had nothing to do wit the flat tax bahaha

  • Yeah flat tax worked just great for Iceland dint it?

  • Iceland's system wasn't a pure Flat Tax system. And there were other bigger reasons why they went "bankrupt." It's a little too complicated to explain on youtube.

  • Flat tax makes sense -- too bad Dan hates a flat tax.

Oh yes -- he calls it a Flat tax. Funny how these guys pick a name thats exactly OPPOSITE of what it really is.

Dan's plan is for NO tax on him, and his unearned income buddies -- cap gains, credit swaps, leverage buy outs, hedge funds, naked shorts. He wants NO tax on them.

He wants ALL taxes paid by workers-- by ordinary income.

That's not flat. Thats flat like PIke's Peak.

  • We need a whole new tax code.

But Fairtax lunatics pretend that the government will create its own reveneue - by magically taxing itself on its own spending.

Yes -- its that frigging ABSURD . And Fairtax leaders know it.

    Google "Fairtax absurdity".

  • Whichever way you put it, taxation is just another word for plunder. Every person is the sole owner of the fruits of their labor, not the government.

  • Agen - good moron -- go out and build your own roads, fight your own wars, create your own infrastructure.

No dumb ass -- all taxation isn't plunder. Plunder is plunder. You are an idiot.

  • I'll see if I can elaborate my statement a little for you, even if you are incapable of doing so yourself. Non-intervention would be a start. There are no valid reasons to fight futile foreign wars. There's enough taxes in the form of fuel taxes, sales tax, property taxes etc. to pay for the roads and infrastructure. I take it you like your overblown, intrusive, warmongering government? I don't, and I especially don't like being robbed of half my income to finance such an abomination.

  • Its true. Money from roads and transportation infrastructure comes from gas taxes. Sales taxes and property taxes pay for pretty much everything from schools to libraries and other infrastructure. These taxes are apportioned and we can account for it. We didn't have an income tax until 1913 and even still only the top 2% earners paid less than 10% income tax. If we didn't need a 56% income tax then, why do we need it now? I would add wasteful to warmongering, intrusive, and overblown.

  • Dan should call his group -- the bastards that want only wages taxed.

YOu can boil all his shit down to that -- they want ONLY work to be taxed. Everything else the lying bastard says is smokescreen bullshit.

He spins and bullshits and lies -- he and Newt and Steve Forbes -- their real hard-on is to have NO tax on hedge funds, ect.

They want ALL taxes paid by workers. Which is fine-- but they should say that, and quit lying to you dumb asses.

  • He's a dumbshit lier?

You know what, who cares, I certainly don't. Hong Kong is an economic marvel and the #1 ranked Country in terms of economic freedom and they do almost everything the opposite of America,

So go on think what ever you want draw up some hammer and sickles and yell far and wide the benefits of progressive tax; I have my sandbox and you have yours, have fun.

  • Hong Kong is a m arvel not cause of a flat tax -- you have no clue what their tax code is. Its just this dumb shit liar telling you.

I don't know the details of their tax code either --- but I've h eard these bastards lie about such shit over and over.

DO you know how someone is lying when they talk about a tax plan?

When their lips are moving. Iceland and Russia have flat taxes and are having a hell of a time.

Don't believe any of these lying batards from CATO. About anything.

  • Well I do have a clue as I was born and raised in Hong Kong , so so far the only dumb shit liar I've encountered is you.

You are partly right that its not just the tax code that makes Hong Kong a marvel, its ranked #1 in terms of economic freedom, which is a product of many factors including limited small government + regulations and no minimum wage law. In short we do almost everything the opposite of your Democratic party.

  • Iceland just went completely broke dufus --bankrupt. Idiot. Plus the other countries you mentioned tax capital gains.

SO not only is your plan full of ship-- its a con game -- the example you give WENT bankrupt.

    Quit lying to people Dad,.

Dan wants to tax ONLY productive people -- workers. He wants NO tax on hedge funds, credit saps, and other financial bullsip.

He wants tax ONLY on work. Talk about punishing productivity!!!

So quit lying to people Dan.

  • Flat my ass. Lets see how flat or fair his plan really is

A high school kid working 20 hours a week at McDonalds would pay more taxes -- not just a higher rate - but more actual taxes -- than ALL hedge funds, ALL leverage buy outs, ALL inheritance, ALL cap gains combined.

One high school kid - taxed more than ALL hedge funds cap gains dividends combined.

Thats not flat you dumb fuck.

In other words-- the bastard in the video is a lying sack of shit.

  • Comment removed

  • Now, if a tax were reallly flat -- the government wouldn't care how you made your money. Work at McDonalds or make it on leverage buy outs-- pay the same percentage.

    That's a flat tax.

What the lying bastard in the video has is just the OPPOSITE. The kid working at McDonalds - one kid -- would pay more taxes that ALL the hedge fund profit, all capital gains, all leverage buy outs, ALL credit swaps, all unearned income.

So he is lying to dumb people.

  • To see how fair or logical this guys "plan" is, check this example

A high school kid working 20 hours a week at McDonalds would pay more taxes -- not just a higher rate - but more actual taxes -- than ALL hedge funds, ALL leverage buy outs, ALL inheritance, ALL cap gains combined.

One high school kid - would be taxed higher than ALL of them combined.

    That's what he calls "FLAT"

    How flat is that?

In other words-- the bastard is a lying sack of shit.

  • A true flat tax is a legitimate concept.

That's my point -- how can I make this clearer? What the lying bastard in the video is talking about is NOT a flat tax -- its zero tax on his income. Its ALL tax on labor - wages -- self employed. Things we generally call "ordinary income"

You can discuss the fairnes or effectivenes of a flat tax rate -- but this guy just CALLS his a "flat tax" but its ZERO tax on unearned income.

So that's just a lie - he is trying to fool stupid people.

  • If the lying bastard in the video was for an actual flat tax -- where everyone paid the same rate -- that would be one thing.

If capital gains, hedge funds, leverage buy outs, naked shorts, credit swaps-- had to pay the same taxes that self employed roofer does, or a dentists does, or a teacher does -- great.

But right now, as it is, work is screwed on taxes. Work pays 300% higher tax rates.

This lying sack in the video wants unearned income to pay NO tax - and work pay ALL the taxes.

  • Well, if you own such a company, and get paid, then you pay tax on that income, right? A flat tax, but at the proper rate.

So, how is that a problem? Or unfair by any means?

  • Shock retard -- why doesn't your dumb ass show me where I am wrong?

The lying bastard in the video claims he wants a FLAT TAX -- when actually its the opposite of flat -- its zero tax for him and his buddies -- high tax -- all tax - on workers and ordinary income.

I don't blame you retards for hating the truth.

  • This fucker in the video is lying, and he knows it. He just calls it flat moron.

    Flat my ass.

Its zero tax, you dumb fuck , on his income, zero.

    That's what he wants retard.

But he has to package his crap to fool stupid people like you -- so he calls it flat -- and its working. You dumb fucks think its flat.

This bastard would shit his JC penny underpants if he had to pay taxes like workers do now. But he want workers to get screwed WORSE and pay ALL taxes, while he not pay ANY

  • stop... please just stop and go away you pathetic person

  • Comment removed

  • You don't get this do you dumb ass? This lying sack of shit in the video ---he doesn;'t fucking want a Flat tax -- his proposal is not a flat tax at all.

Its fucking ZERO tax on his ass, and his buddy's ass. He wants ONLY work -labor to pay taxes.

  • The bottom half of this country don't even pay taxes. Quit your whining

  • How many astroturf accounts do you own, FilmCriticOne, a.k.a. FarceTax a.k.a. FreeLunchTax?

  • The only tax plan I know that isn't a con job -- Ron Wyden from Oregon had it a few years back.

Its simple, fair, and short. But because it's honest and not bullshit, most of you dumb asses will never like it/

  • Yes - our tax system sucks. Precisely because of con artist like the lying bastard in the video -- and the dumb asses who believe them.

We need a simple tax code -- and a true flat tax is fine with me idiot.

The problem, retard, is that lying bastard boy in the video isn't for a flat tax.

Read this slow moron -- his tax is not fuching flat.

Thats right retard -- flat my ass. It's a scam you moron. He wants ZERO tax for him and his buddies -- he wants HIGH taxes for your dumb ass.

  • There are lots of simple modifications to (what he seems to call) a (pure) 'flat tax' system, that can make it more fair and prosperous (and more flat in a way). Yes, but I wouldn't be so hard on it to say wich of those ways would be better.

Priority #1 should be to lower overall taxes (since most industrialized countries have quite high taxes and suck the nuts).
