This is what counterpart is meant to sound like. I think Bach would have been please, you just can get that kind of expression on a harpsichord or organ.
That's all I was saying. In Gould's case he may have gone a too far. But even went he went to far, he was great .
I mean my teacher 21, believe he is still at Kenyon. This dude first played with an orchestra -- and of course that is nothing new.
Anyhow he kept making fun of Gould's chair etc... and saying his Goldberg Variations were great but simply not bach. But I'd rather play a fairly racy interpretation than a piece by a nobody.

all of you! are you fucking crazy? whats up with you blabbering about humming? its just musicianship overflowing! ask to any jazzman about one of the greatest jazz pianist KEITH JARRET, and ask if the humming is bad. they gonna beat the shit out of you!
@depauw2004 - I think the humming adds character; it shows how into the music Gould was... But all right then, I suppose we should stop forcing you to listen to music you hate.
@depauw2004 "Most people", Frank said, as he harvested his lonely dental floss, "Wouldn't know music if it came up and bit them on the ass." The humming is part of the sound of the music.
@ManelRuivo Ha ha! Keith Jarret humms because he thinks that imitating Gould will making him a great pianist. His un-emotional, pretentious humming is pathetic.
I've found an not well known musician, Juan Jose CHUQUISENGO (also Sony artist like G. GOuld!!) - hear the Gigue of Bach French Suite, clarity, touch, joy, spirit - just amazing!!!!
I've read he also doesn't perform, is black belt in Karate and Kung Fu, plays jazz, tangos and improvisations in Keith Jarrett style, teaches phenomenology of music at some international academy of Barenboim... WHO is this guy??
what's the BWV number? I've looked at all the the violin paritas/sonatas from 1001-1006, but can't imagine this being an adaptation of a violin piece. I thought I'd seen something vaguely familiar in BWV 1002, but that was a while ago.. any help?
@turncapp oh you do a big mistake...you try to see only the art and not the personallity...music is the only art that need attention to the maker...if don't play bethoven as he is written you won't be able to really understand the piece...
I commented on this `Bach rehearsal with sea gulls and the pet collie` some years ago- I Ialways like to come back to and watch it again-it is so impressive-his short break at 2:02 and the pianistic talent displayed in Gould`s extravagant style- a joy to watch
This video shows a fantastic performance. Glenn Gould! One of the greatest pianists ever, and for me, the best bach pianist. And the top comments is for Lady Gaga???!!! For god shakes!! Vote something else! I don't care about the fact that there are bad comments for gaga. There still exist!! By the way, this partita is amazing..(And sorry for my english!)
Right there with you. I can't remember which moronic loser said 'Glenn Gould Sucked' and can't figure out if it was a joke. But with an open mind I listened to Gaga -- and she is worse than Celine Dion. of Jlo.
Hey, I had teachers that hated him and it was for spite.
When I practice I sing along as well -- it helps with your breathing techniques, and prevents subjective hearing. I am really jealous of him. But only as I wish I could be as good. NOT
I can play any note with one finger very fast, so there are only 9 fingers left to exercise, and there are 88 keys, that is (mumblemumble) 880 fingers times keys to practice, well, ahemmm, what am I talking.

@depauw2004 - I think the humming adds character; it shows how into the music Gould was... But all right then, I suppose we should stop forcing you to listen to music you hate.

@Otacon144
I don't hate the music. Just the humming.
depauw2004 6 months ago
@depauw2004 - You don't have to listen to that either.
Otacon144 6 months ago
@depauw2004 You just don't know a good hum job when you hear one.

@depauw2004 "Most people", Frank said, as he harvested his lonely dental floss, "Wouldn't know music if it came up and bit them on the ass." The humming is part of the sound of the music.

@ManelRuivo 1000 percent correct

@ManelRuivo Ha ha! Keith Jarret humms because he thinks that imitating Gould will making him a great pianist. His un-emotional, pretentious humming is pathetic.
Gould is in another universe together with Bach.

@ManelRuivo I consinder myself to be a jazzman of sorts and I am not a big fan of Jarrets humming. However, I love it when Gould does it.

Half of the song is cut out in this version. Look up Partita 2 to hear the whole thing.

what's the BWV number? I've looked at all the the violin paritas/sonatas from 1001-1006, but can't imagine this being an adaptation of a violin piece. I thought I'd seen something vaguely familiar in BWV 1002, but that was a while ago.. any help?
rds769 7 months ago
@rds769 This is BWV 826.

@turncapp oh you do a big mistake...you try to see only the art and not the personallity...music is the only art that need attention to the maker...if don't play bethoven as he is written you won't be able to really understand the piece...
Grivendal 7 months ago
@Grivendal
Wrong. No composer wrote in a way that was static. If everyone played beethoven the same way -- why listen to it more than once.

NOT
