@123boy isn't it interesting that when the cars were spare no expense, engineering is foremost, function and form are everything, the long term viability of the company was at it's zenith. Now that the american paradigm of marketing is paramount is at the head of the company thinking, the company itself is in disrepair along with it's cars.
How many LUXURYcars from Japan are truly going to be show stoppers---true collectors cars in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years? I CAN NOT THINK OF ONE!!! How have they truly been unique; and decisively changed the direction, attitudes, and perceptions of the buying public and culture?------
Lexus is like the best generic Skippy peanut butter- but still a copy. Wow! this is the best damn Skippy copy peanut butter in the world! That to me does not make it into the pantheon of world greats.
I don't thing Mercedes-Benz is too afraid about what Toyota/Lexus or others are doing. They always have CREATED benchmarks in the industry. Their name and brand is EXCELLENT. All companies change and evolve. They will survive and those great loyal critics will eventually find themselves in nursing homes and be dead soon anyway.
The greatest car marker that most seldom copied any other. Original. That will always be good for me.
We can owe Mercedes losing its legendary quality because of Lexus
Lexus could make better products then Mercedes at a lower cost. This really was a bummer for mercedes and forced them to built cheaper, mass-marketed cars to compete with Lexus.
I fear the same thing will happen with Hyundai and Lexus.
Well,as said before, W123 was the last car Mercedes made by standards and not for profit. Although after the new director of Daimler-Benz AG decided to unite with cerberus and chrysler, their "adventure" costed Mercedes 70 billion €. Thats when cars got bad. I wish that some day in the future, Mercedes will get back in style with retro design, and old technology, not with those stupid electric cars and hybrids! We should use hydrogen instead!
Well, I really consider any Mercedes made after Chrysler and Mercedes Merged in 1998-2001 "risky" in reliability. But anything after that is guaranteed garbage that comes from the "Legendary" automaker.
Its really when Chrysler merged with Mercedes that their Quality dropped to levels that were comparable to cars that were 20-30K cheaper.
I agree. The w124 was the last model to come out that was of highest quality. It too, was over-engineered and the most advanced of the 123/201/126 models.
I think it also coincides with the fact that foreign (particularly japanese) competetion was not yet a huge factor in the luxury car market.
ur so lucky youve been in the museum, i really wanna go there, i know there is a w123 in the museum but you didnt get it in your videos, i know its a 240 D, great car, about the S Class you like, you mean the w126, i love it, but i prefere the older s class, the w116, we call it here the 300, because most of them here are 300 SEL, thats about the w126, the 116 is called 280, or "SHANAB" which means MUSTACHE in my language, because of the turn signal lights style, great cars... thx for the comnts
Awesome pictures ... I was at the Mercedes-Benz Museum not too long time ago. I can recognize some pictures here were also taken from the museum. I still have to edit more footage about it. Plus next weekend there will be an oldtimer meeting not too far away and I am sure there will be also some old Mercedes beauties ;o) The s-class at 1:37 us by the way my favorit S-class (but of course with standard indicators in orange but deep down on AMG wheels, lol)
I have one of the first w123's evermade from 1976, love classic MB's :p

some of the cars to the end are truly rubish, i have to disagree with most of you, Mercedez really picked up in quality from about 2001/2002

Be careful...I had a '98. Those are pieces of garbage. I would say Benz started to go awfully wrong in early 90's.
