just fixed my xbox but instead of going this far i just took the top off and pressed down oin the heat sinks in like a circular motion, cleaned all the dust out and put it back together and hey presto, worked first time with no towels involved

my xbox has this problem at the moment, if i do the towel trick (or just cover the vents with sticky tape) and overheat it until it rrods, it works again and lasts for about a day but when i go to turn it on the next day i have sound but no video signal so i have to overheat it again.

@xnickyy0x Find yourself a cheap heat gun from Harbor Freight Tools or ACE hardware, as well as a small amount of lead free solder. Then pick up an x-clamp fix kit from eBay or something. Don't be afraid to take it apart, just take your time and use a good video guide. Use the heat gun directly on the GPU heatsink[the short one] and keep touching the solder against it until it melts instantly. Then let it cool for about 30 mins and do the x-clamp replacement. You only need to do the GPU.

just so that any of you who do this fix on your xbox. . . the reason this fix is temporary is because the x-clamps that put compression on the heat-sinks weaken. . . so if you buy a set of screws and washers that is ment to fix the RROD than this should fix this problem as well. the kit can be found on amazon and ebay and this should be a more permanent fix.

I just had this problem. I got it like 50 mins ago. vid was not working but sound was perfect. I opened my 360 cleaned it from the inside, tested it and still sound only. then I did the towel trick and now it's working perfectly again

Pushing down on the already cracked joints will make it worse only temporarily bridge little bits of solder left between the GPU and the PCB joints

Reflow the GPU and H(ana) chip properly with a reflow station or a heatgun if you can't quite afford the reflow station

You never ever want to press down on a chip when it's hot. All you are doing is breaking the ball joints and causing an even bigger problem. So now you will get 0022 error. I have fixed over 60 360's and I would not recommend this to anyone. Best way to do it is to get some liquid flax and reflow the GPU.

First anyone know why you dont touch the chips? First static electricity, second the oils from your skin will actually cause the chip to get very hot/cook/melt in those areas. Please do not do any of what he is telling you as this is one of the worst things you can do. The issue is that the gpu and cpu need to be reflowed dued to the low melting temps of the lead free solder Microsoft uses and it melts and causes the chips and capicitors to be come unseated. The capacitors are those little micro tiny bits around those large gpu and cpu chips. What he is doing is crushing those and as you can see a major no video or erro 74 is from all that excess compound thats bad
