Personally, I like the "artsy fartsy" progressive rock sound that Dennis brought to Styx. What I don't like is the "mamsy, pansy" sound that Dennis brought when he wrote "Babe" and "First Time".
If you remember Dr. Demento, he used to play this on his radio program. I knew of this song because I bought all five Styx albums which existed at the time I first heard "Lady."
I have the skinny on this story straight from Chuck Panozzo. It was written by John P AND John C. The only members from Styx on the song are the 2 Johns and Chuck. Dennis and JY wanted nothing to do with the song. They dont appear on it anywhere. Chuck said it was a big FUCK YOU to Dennis who, at the time was writing artsy-fartsy, Emerson, Lake & Palmer crap.
I am holding my copy of "The Serpent is Rising" by Styx in my hand, and nowhere can I see this as a song. Witch Wolf, The Grove of Eglantine, Young Man, As Bad as This, Winner Take All, 22 Years... nothing on a plexiglass toilet anywhere. I'm gonna listen to this in it's entirety and report back later.
@JorealConners Have you found it yet? Try listening to As Bad As This all the way through. Check out the credits on the album sleeve to "all our friends in the Plexiglass Toilet choir", just beneath Arnold Goodman as well. :-)
@Dyynamo Damn... right there at the 3:45 mark. I must've just tuned out by then. In my defense, I'm usually reading when I listen to music nowadays, but still. How'd I miss this?
I remember hearing this back in my teens in the 70s but no other Styx fan I know ever remembers it! I have been told by quite a few people I must have been mistaken. I am VINDICATED!! Thanx YouTube for qualifying a 30+ year old memory!
I didn't believe my aunt when she first told me about this song so I had to go find the vinyl lp and btw thats the only way to listen to Styx lol. I LOVE THIS SONG!
I actually had this album back in the 70s. Not many people did! Now it is on the Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings in all its poorly-recorded glory. I love the song and I love the whole album, even if Dennis DeYoung doesn't.
WoW!!!!! I think this was only on the picture disk(first release) here in the states! Ive been looking for it for years! Thanks for posting this!!! This was my first concert(with April Wine)!!!! I bet it isnt on the Cd!! (which would be sad)
@HallPassExpired It was on the original Serpent is Rising LP on the Wooden Nickel label, but it is not listed in the song list. It is tagged onto the end of "As Bad as This." It is also on The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings double disc CD release which contains their first four albums plus a bonus track ("Unfinished Song") that wasn't on any of the albums.
Before Styx had hit records, Dr.Demento introduced this deep number into the public consciousness, since radio play eluded them until "Lady" broke the ice a year after this song was laid on wax. Haven't heard this for awhile, yet it holds up fine (as does Styx's more recent Billy Bob Thornton-vocalized "Bourgeois Pig"). However, I've wondered whether the Styx-men now feel embarrassed by it or are able to chuckle at their own youthful audacity. Hopefully the latter.
The song isn't listed on the album. The only reference to it is a thank you to the Plexiglass Toilet Choir in the sleeve notes. I don't have the CD, but the song follows on from "As Bad As This" at the end of side 1 on the vinyl LP.
I heard this on Dr. Demento too also around 1982. But that wasn't the 1st time I heard it, that was 2 years earlier when I bought the album. Btw, TSIR is my all-time favourite album cover.
@maxpin63 Actually, both Johns wrote it. I spoke with Chuck Panozzo, at length about this song. The only 3 members on the recording are the 2 Johns and Chuck. It was a big F-U to Dennis who hates the song. Dennis was more artsy-fartsy at the time.
In China the factory workers have to go to a trench on side of the blg. I have a friend who did proto-type work there. he said the trench run down into the rice fields. Men and woman both use same trench.
Oh, and I almost forgot to say that Styx invented the THX opening sound. Give a listen to Krakatoa and after John finishes up his poem, the music goes into a dazzling upward spiral that tips off with the all too familiar THX sound.
I think it's pretty cool that Lucas borrowed it, it's just that I wish that it was more well known that Styx is where that sound came from.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that "all too familiar THX sound" was in fact created by an employee at Lucasfilm. In fact, it's trademarked to them. Doing a quick google search of it would have told you that in about 10 seconds. Perhaps the creator was influenced by by this album, but nowhere is it credited to Styx. It is listed as a "similar predecessor" on wikipedia, along with a few others.
This entire album was strange. The concept of the album had a lot to do with s*x [can I say that on youtube?] or so I have been informed.
Witch wolf is about a prostitute, The Grove of Eglantine..just look at the lyrics because I really can't say it on youtube! The Serpent is Rising is in reference to DNA, and finally look for hidden metaphors in Krakatoa, and ask yourself why the "Hallelujah Chorus" follows it.
Plexiglas toilet just ends up being another dirty, but fun song from that album.
He probably grew out of liking it. A lot of people say their early work sounds like a "Best Of" of other music from that time period, and since that shout he does was pretty cliche for a rock band he decided to make up his own thing later.
This is just my speculation, I've never actually talked to him in person, so I wouldn't know why he did or didn't do something.
I used to go to the library as a kid, borrow this album just so I could listen to it right there. When I bring it up to people now, they don't believe me that the song exists
@maytag28 thats wierd, my library actually had a plexiglass toilet. I would shit forever and listen to this. And there was a Mariachi band there. And a guy who sold tacos.
This is my all-time favorite Styx song. Seriously. I was four years old when my brother bought "The Serpent is Rising" album and when he first played me this song, I ran around the house singing it for days. What precious memories.
I love STYX, have since the early 80s (waaaay back when I was in high school), but I have just one question in regards to this song..."What were they smoking?" or maybe "What weren't they smoking?" lol funny song tho, nad great band
I first heard this on their record album and later somone played a tape recording of it that he got from Doctor Demento which was from a radio station. This song was the last song on side one or two of the record. It was a song that sounded like a choir and the choir was after a poem called "Cracklia" Craclia was after "The Serpent Is Rising" which is also here on "You Tube" Someone was surprised to hear that this was Styx.
I believe you're thinking of "Krakatoa" as the poem read (rather, uhm, 'dramatically' lol) by John Curulewski. It comes right before a brief cut of the "Hallelujah Chorus" which closes out the album.
Those who go out and buy the "Complete Wooden Nickel" CD can find Plexiglass Toilet tagged on the end of the track "As Bad as This"... it's a little hidden gem. ;)
'Serpent' IS definitely a bit of a strange album, but I like it too!

some of you may get a laugh out of this track but it sadly disrupts the flow of this album...which grooves along quite nicely otherwise.

For those whining about Dennis being "artsy fartsy", if it wasn't for him there would be no Styx to remember.
Yes I said "remember" because Styx without DY is like a submarine without a hatch, it just doesn't work!

this is a crazy song!
who hits the high notes in Witch wolf, Winner takes all, Serpent is rising (ending) and Young man? JY or Dennis?
jowox 3 years ago
I know on Winner Take All that it's JY, and probably Witch Wolf as well since that was his song.
As for Serpent i'm tempted to say it might be JC since he was the one singing but if not then it was JY.
pie453 3 years ago
OK but why did he stop doing these high falsettos on later albums? They sound cool I think. JY can sing low too, great range.
