Upon acceptance of winning it, Obama was praised by the committee, "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy". . well, we can't have more than 2 strong parties in the US, the constitution mistakenly doesn't allow for it. we'd have to switch to a parliamentary system to have more than 2, but that requires changing the constitution in a major way, so it's not going to happen

The US supplied them with weaponry and supplies, to take over Afghanistan so that US would not have trouble with anyone when they intervene in the drug trade and oil mining. The predecessors of the Group of afghans are now known as Talibans, revolted against the US and stopped taking orders from them. The war in Afghan is mere war for oil, drugs and profit.

The trouble it seems is the question of "who decides what the true principles are?" I was fighting to stop the spread of communism and my opponents were fighting to defend their land against foreign invaders. Both ideas seem true and reasonable and yet my friends still died.

I think that it was silly for them to award him the peace prize too for 2 reasons:
1) he didn't even finish his presidency
2) As you said, he was conducting two wars both of which he inherited from the last guy.

Another irony is that as of October 9, 2009 and as of today, September 29, 2010, Obama has not actually done anything to bring about peace. He hasn't yet mediated a peace treaty between any two parties anywhere. He might yet do so, (I doubt it,) but the Nobel people should have waited until he actually did something!!!

I saw his speech and was baffled over the standing ovations. He spent forty minutes justifying war and the Nobel committee could barley hold back their tears. well, we can't have more than 2 strong parties in the US, the constitution mistakenly doesn't allow for it. we'd have to switch to a parliamentary system to have more than 2, but that requires changing the constitution in a major way, so it's not going to happen
i like Jesse too, but Obama has done an excellent job so far. he's really helped our country get back on track by repairing the banks, the markets and now the economy continues to improve. in 2-3 more years, it will be a boom time again

The US supplied them with weaponry and supplies, to take over Afghanistan so that US would not have trouble with anyone when they intervene in the drug trade and oil mining. The predecessors of the Group of afghans are now known as Talibans, revolted against the US and stopped taking orders from them. The war in Afghan is mere war for oil, drugs and profit.

yes there is irony with a peace prize being awarded to someone conducting wars, but let's be fair and stop (conveniently) forgetting that he inherited these wars.
as a non-american i really thought making americans less hated around the world is in itself quite the feat. but apparently every obama hater on youtube could've done that in their sleep anyway huh?
i would not have given him this prize (even HE said he's undeserving), but pissing on him for THEIR choice isn't exactly fair either.

On the surface it does seem very ironic; I mean, he hasn't really done anything. The point here is to realize that there are underlying reasons to award the prize to him. Not to reward him for the actions he has done so far, but mainly to influence his future actions. This is not a terribly uncommon strategy - eg: Yasser Arafat.

I generally support Obama and even I find this ridiculous. On the grounds of basic ethics, there should be a rule that no one prosecuting a war can even be considered for the prize (duh).
Politically, it only hurts Obama and makes it all the harder for him to accomplish whatever quasi-peaceful things they're trying to preemptively reward him for.
On the other hand, to all those who are outraged over this, just remember, it's not Obama's doing.

However, the only options for Afghanistan are (i) Stay w/new rules of engagement; kill all enemies (ii) continue trying to win hearts & minds (doesn't work) (iii) Pull out and, if necessary, rush back in to cross over into Pakistan where the enemy resides. Taliban & Al Quaeda don't recognize any "boundaries"

People have joked about it, but I think it is the truth; the world as well as the voting public have rained down on Obama a tremendous love-fest simply for not-being-Bush.
I may have considered Obama to be the lesser of the two evils during the election, but just bearing in mind that the man has done very little in office, hasn't been able to pass significant legislation with a supermajority, I think he will lose congress next year and lose his own job in 2012.

The problem with awarding this price to Obama, at this point, does not have so much to do with the wars that are going on. The wars are pieces of the aftermath of Bush. The problem is that the price is now awarded for what MIGHT be done in peace work, not what HAS been done.
And, considering the leader of the committee is from the same political party in Norway as the primeminister, which Obama talked so good about, it can be viewed as a bribe. Obama should decline the award!

Sorry platipot, wrong again. I fought in Vietnam in order to get an education and no amount of putdowns can take that away from me. The long view is that corn begets corn, tomatoes beget tomatoes, and war begets (in my experience, death, misery, and destruction). I am not 18 any more and issues as powerful as war are issues that I alone decide for me. If war is your bag, have at it. I wish you well.

Thanks for the comment fdsaks. I understand your point. I was a Marine grunt in Vietnam and saw what war is when stripped of any ideals. The trouble it seems is the question of "who decides what the true principles are?" I was fighting to stop the spread of communism and my opponents were fighting to defend their land against foreign invaders. Both ideas seem true and reasonable and yet my friends still died.
