I think I know what Dunning was thinking. The Waratahs were playing an advantage, if you listen closely you can hear the ref say "Offside". So he thought that he'd miss the drop goal, letting them play the penalty to kick it into touch and then to go for the line out, which would possibly lead into a try.

But I think he should have just intentionally knocked it on to play the penalty from there, like most players now do

Dunning is a genius. He was attempting an Andrew Johns-style play. Johns used to aim for the goal posts on purpose, so the ball would richochet into the arms of a chaser, who'd then score. He just was a little off in the way he struck the ball, but you can'y blame a front rower for that, where was the 5/8 calling for the ball?

He's really pissed cos the tahs needed a bonus point to get into the finals, and they had advantage, so a missed drop goal wouldve resulted in a penalty for the tahs, which would have had a fair chance of resulting in a try, which would have given em the bonus point.

By making the goal, he increased the lead but gave away the chance of a try, therefore tahs were out of the final.
