A true contralto is as rare as hen's teeth. Eva Podles is a true contralto, and certainly the greatest around today. To hear her sing a role like Ulrica in Verdi's "Ballo" is to be totally spooked out. I've got her performance of it from the Houston Opera from 2009, and I acquired the whole opera just for having her Ulrica, which is only in the second scene of Act I. She's dynamite!
I am stunned how she sings all those styles completely appropriate to the period. Here, she is really the best example of an Italian contralto, and I would love to hear here Azucena or other roles, maybe also verismo, e.g. the Principessa in Puccini's Suor Angelica. I love how she makes the music her own - she is a true artist!
Ok, I don't even know what to write, but I have to comment something. Ok, just take every single amazing, great, positive comment written here, or should be written here, and pretend they are all in this comment
Someday soon we will all find out that Podles has been one of the best singers ever since. It's just that altos have no huge fan base (unlike sopranos) and Podles is far from being a diva. She's just an amazing singer with an incredible range and a warmth in her voice that's simply stunning.
Richtig!
@3F93 Thank you Andreas. I was looking for contralto songs due to my own contralto voicetype. I usually sing mezzo-soprano or soprano opera's for the lack of contralto opera's. If anyone has other contralto's that sing opera tell me please so i can learn more. I've got a range from small d to B2. (Small d is in the lowest range of the barintones and C2 is soprano)
@Operaman41 I'm 30 years old. I don't know any recent operetic contraltos, but i know off the 1950's contraltos. I find it very old and depressing to listen to a 1950 contralto. For the mezzo-sopranos i know of Fiorenza Cossotto, Fedora Barbieri, Grace Bumbry.
Sir(s): If I may, at this Date and Time, state here how, if need be on some soon-coming Fateful Day, even I shall give a dear token of my inner Heart to the Regal Lady for Her Own Petitions to Bear both It and Me upward to that Place Celestial. Thank you so very much. Merci beaucoups. Gratsi.
CIECA (to Laura who has released her) O voice of woman or angel Who has freed me of my chains, My blindness forbids me The sight of your saintly face. Still you cannot leave me Without a pious offering. I offer you this rosary, Pray, accept it. With my prayers added It will bring you luck. May my benediction Be on your head. LAURA and ENZO May the omnipotent God Bear witness to her pious words! GIOCONDA Mother, a guardian angel Protects you. CHORUS Most clearly Heaven Protects the old woman!
"In this famous aria from the first act the blind mother of Gioconda (contralto) unjustly accused of witchcraft by the storyteller Barnaba (baritone), thanks Laura (mezzosoprano) the wife of the noble and powerful Alvise Badoero (basso) who has prevented her from being imprisoned."

There are some disturbing mannerisms in the present voice production of Podles.
But she is a great singer and actress and for the La Cieca character these are probably suitable.

-Looking up Diana Krall on Wikipedia and found this - Great stuff...the world is full of great stuff, if one takes the time to look.
This is wonderful - THANKS. ( check out Diana Krall in "De-Lovely") film available on DVD about Cole Porter...starring Kevin Kline, Ashley Judd and an enchantment of nightingales, covering Cole Porter songs. Mentioned because Diana Krall sings in "Graceful Contralto - according to WIKI - Wow.
