  • I don't want to hear anyone else sing this. Ewa stole my heart.

  • A true contralto is as rare as hen's teeth. Eva Podles is a true contralto, and certainly the greatest around today. To hear her sing a role like Ulrica in Verdi's "Ballo" is to be totally spooked out. I've got her performance of it from the Houston Opera from 2009, and I acquired the whole opera just for having her Ulrica, which is only in the second scene of Act I. She's dynamite!

  • I am stunned how she sings all those styles completely appropriate to the period. Here, she is really the best example of an Italian contralto, and I would love to hear here Azucena or other roles, maybe also verismo, e.g. the Principessa in Puccini's Suor Angelica. I love how she makes the music her own - she is a true artist!

  • Ok, I don't even know what to write, but I have to comment something. Ok, just take every single amazing, great, positive comment written here, or should be written here, and pretend they are all in this comment

  • Amazing voice

  • Ewa is a real contralto. She has the base, the high notes, the tessitura and the ambitus. Marvelous!

  • Sublime!

  • Questa e la voce del mezzosoprano.

Per me non e una contralto vera.

  • I love this song and this kind of voice!!! So wonderful a true contralto did justice as it should be for this beautiful masterpiece!!! Ewa RULES!!!

  • FANTASTIQUE !!!!!!!!!

    MAGNIFIQUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm singing this song this semester and I love it!

Holy boobs! Boobs lady really threw me off for a second.

  • Really a voice of a woman or an angel

  • Someday soon we will all find out that Podles has been one of the best singers ever since. It's just that altos have no huge fan base (unlike sopranos) and Podles is far from being a diva. She's just an amazing singer with an incredible range and a warmth in her voice that's simply stunning.

  • @Andreasberlin35

Richtig!

  • @Andreasberlin35 I agree with you, and contraltos are even rarer than sopranos! They should get the fame they deserve.

Damn people obsessed by high notes.

  • @3F93 Thank you Andreas. I was looking for contralto songs due to my own contralto voicetype. I usually sing mezzo-soprano or soprano opera's for the lack of contralto opera's. If anyone has other contralto's that sing opera tell me please so i can learn more. I've got a range from small d to B2. (Small d is in the lowest range of the barintones and C2 is soprano)

  • @lonely1wicca May I ask how old you are?? Do you know about other mezzo's or contraltos??

Listen to Rise Stevens, Marilyn Horne, Christa Ludwig, Fedora Barbieri. Just look mezzo or contralto

  • @Operaman41 I'm 30 years old. I don't know any recent operetic contraltos, but i know off the 1950's contraltos. I find it very old and depressing to listen to a 1950 contralto. For the mezzo-sopranos i know of Fiorenza Cossotto, Fedora Barbieri, Grace Bumbry.

  • @Andreasberlin35 she is a contralto

  • Voix abyssale et absolument fascinante !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sir(s): If I may, at this Date and Time, state here how, if need be on some soon-coming Fateful Day, even I shall give a dear token of my inner Heart to the Regal Lady for Her Own Petitions to Bear both It and Me upward to that Place Celestial. Thank you so very much. Merci beaucoups. Gratsi.

  • CIECA (to Laura who has released her) O voice of woman or angel Who has freed me of my chains, My blindness forbids me The sight of your saintly face. Still you cannot leave me Without a pious offering. I offer you this rosary, Pray, accept it. With my prayers added It will bring you luck. May my benediction Be on your head. LAURA and ENZO May the omnipotent God Bear witness to her pious words! GIOCONDA Mother, a guardian angel Protects you. CHORUS Most clearly Heaven Protects the old woman!
  • "In this famous aria from the first act the blind mother of Gioconda (contralto) unjustly accused of witchcraft by the storyteller Barnaba (baritone), thanks Laura (mezzosoprano) the wife of the noble and powerful Alvise Badoero (basso) who has prevented her from being imprisoned."

  • nice cuntralto...

  • There are some disturbing mannerisms in the present voice production of Podles.

But she is a great singer and actress and for the La Cieca character these are probably suitable.

  • This is bellowing-swallowing the tone, like a siren on a destroyer. Listen to the great Mezzos of the past, Germaine Cernay, Blanche Thebom and others.

Somma Podles

  • j'adore Ewa Podles !

  • Simply the best!

  • wait wait wait wait

they guy in the beginning with the black coat! I think I saw him playing Pizarro in Fidelio when I went to France.

also, Ewa is hardcore. EYWA EYWA EYWA.

  • straordinaria!!!!!!!

  • You never see the audience applaud after this aria which is truly beautiful. And the way Podles sings it... she's a league of her own.

  • Wow! They don't make contraltos like that anymore! Brava!

  • Errr... Podles is still singing. So I guess they do?

    But yes. Brava indeed.

  • Increible! :)

  • BEAUTIFULL!!!

  • Finally a real contralto!

  • oh my god! manrico60 again? he is tracking down all the videos from great singers and posting illogical comments. check his profile, he hates everything, this woman is awesome

  • i'm getting my daily podles fix yesss :-p~~

  • The greatest singer before us to-day =untouchable !!!!!!!

  • what is she saying? its beautiful, but i cant find the translated lyrics anywhere...

  • She is singing a heart felt prayer.....translated ah tis the voice of angel bright has caused my cruel chains to seer while my poor eyes void of sight can see thy features yet i wdould offer ere we part a token from my heart from my sad, grateful heart this rosary i give thee round it my heart felt prayers cling and on thy head for ever near shall be my heart felt prayer

  • heartwrenchingly beautiful

  • Beautiful

  • Totally beautiful. Her acting is fantastic too!

  • wow

  • a great voice. forget zajick with the huge wobble. voice alone is not enough. podles reigns now as no. 1. the greatest of the young ones is giada amparan. a future podles? i think so and maybe better

  • I'm just learning about opera, the Wiki links are very very useful for me. I don't read music, so when they describe someone's vocal range as between this note and that note, I can't hear it in my head, I have to listen to a real example. This really helps me learn to distinguish a contralto from a mezzo from a soprano. So there!

  • Why is wikipedia linking to youtube?

  • Bacause she is a contralto, its a treat i tell ya.

  • now isn't that self-explanatory?

  • Because they can and its free.

  • They are rel=nofollow links. If you knew what you were talking about you would know that spammers dont use wikipedia links because of this attribute. That is why wikipedia allows outgoing links

  • Good job on replying to something I said 3 weeks ago. They efffing linked here because the article was about CONTRALTOS and this is a video depicting a CONTRALTO. Did anyone say anything about SPAMMERS? Just shut the hell up and go crawl under a rock.

  • yet another person with no clue what they are talking about.

  • WOW, very impressive, wiki walking from Nat King Cole...Elvis...Contralto thanks for the enjoyable video

  • Epic.

  • Can anybody, please, tell me what OMG means, English is not my first language and I don't even have a clue

  • lol! it means "Oh My God" (and "lol" means "Laughing Out Loud")

  • Umm.. not a wiki-sent person.

Was looking up La Giaconda, saw that Podles was La Cieca, and thought OMG I have to see that!

    Wonderful!

  • I don't really care for this particular style of opera (I'm a baroque fan) but Ewa can make me love anything she decides to sing, from Verdi to Russian songs. Luv her.

  • My gawd, what a voice. Wanted to hear Contralto as well. Blew in from Wiki.

  • wiki wiki

  • Great. Great!!!!!

  • Yeah, wiki ;)

  • ahhhh... contralto :)

  • thanks wikipedia

  • Just blew in from Wiki.

  • Joanne Catherall of the band The Human League sent me here. Go 80's synthpop!

  • Go Wikipedia!!!! LOL

  • i be wiki sent

  • another wiki sent "contralto" looker. this is nice :)

  • I always wonder why sopranos want to do Gioconda, since Ponchielli gave the best music to her mom.

  • What do you mean?

  • Cieca gets 'Voce di donna', Enzo gets 'Cielo e mar', Baranaba gets 'Ah, pescator' (after dominating Act I), even Laura gets a good aria, and all Gioconda gets is a couple lines of 'Enzo addorato' and if she doesn't sing it as beautifully as people remember Milanov singing it, she has nothing left but to shriek her way through the Suiccidio. Thanks, but no thanks.

  • EXCELLENT !!!! For those who remarks negetively...go listen to Milli Vanilli & Michael Jackson. Not everyone appreciates arts & skills.

  • Amen to that! I sing mezzo-soprano and this woman's voice totally blows me away. Fantastic!

  • I agree your comment is absolutely inappropriate, you don't go around judging people just like, first it's not your problem the things that we do with our lives, that shows the level of ignorance that some people can achieve, I don't have any problems with straight people, but I hate the ones who think the same as you, GET A LIFE.

About the singing the best contralto ever

  • from wiki as well.

    Maria Callas.

  • Another wiki sent person.. looking up Contralto.

  • Just another Wiki-sent viewer. ;) Nice piece though.

  • So what if they are gay? At least they have the brains and lack the insecurity to enjoy a great voice. I'd rather be gay than an idiot!

  • Your comment is completely inappropriate and offensive, and demonstrates your ignorance and total lack of respect for diversity. Grow up!

  • Don't you get it?

Bendsito is posting the link all over wikipedia to get more views on his video...

  • This is why teachers don't allow Wikipedia as a reference. ;)

  • hi! what do you mean?

  • huh? Because one can LEARN something in writing and then HEAR an actual AUDIO example of it via a link?

God forbid we have learn via multi-media! It should be a crime! *moron*

  • and so??? They are appropriate links are far as I can tell. More power and gratitude to 'em.

*someone's got an anger issue, I see"

  • Christine McVie for me!

  • Katy Perry here. LOL.

  • Toni Braxton sent me here from Wikipedia

  • A correctly, well-trained voice is always good to hear so that the public can be informed as to how it should sound when you sing the why you should....i.e. breath control, word phrasing, projection to the last seats in the venue, etc. Ladies, this is where it all came from in the beginning.

  • Katy Perry calling
