The hand/glove is only an extension of the bat when it is holding the bat. In this case it was not, so it's handling the ball. If the bat was still in both hands it would have been a second hit, which would be fine as it's protecting his stumps.
i was always taught that the hand/glove is an extension of the bat (hense being caught in slips having had it hit my glove not bat) but then its seperated in this rule. Surely the rule of handled ball should be when HANDLING not hitting the ball. IE actually controlling the ball with the hand?
(a) Either batsman is out Handled the ball if he wilfully touches the ball while in play with a hand or hands not holding the bat unless he does so with the consent of a fielder.
(b) Either batsman is out under this Law if, while the ball is in play, and without the consent of a fielder, he uses his hand or hands not holding the bat to return the ball to any fielder.
i thikn he got this one right buddy, plus obstructing the field is when a fielder is attempting a runout and the batsman obstructs the throw, but in point B he says if the batsman uses his hands, therefore, handled the ball...pretty straight forward.
@TheMadcowwww Actually, obstructing the field can be anything from that to shouting to distract someone from taking a catch - clear case of handled the ball here, but I don't know why he didn't have the presence of mind to glove it away whilst still holding the bat in that hand, or the bat - legal second hit in defence of wicket - they should be teaching all kids to do it - as much as I dislike Ponting, he's the best in the world at it by far and it's saved him on numerous occasions.

the rule handled ball is very confusing to me.

Law 33 (Handled the ball)
1. Out Handled the ball
