Not only is this a great song, it's played on "green" technology and they didn't even know it back then--no electricity, no need for oil to run generators, no carbon credits, etc. All way ahead of their time.
-The "On Wisconsin" battle cry happened at Missionary Ridge during the Civil War, it was the battle cry of the 3rd WI, the actual cry be came famous when Gen. Arthur MacArthur Jr. yelled it while going up the ridge...
@gsd1838 very good. I admire your american history. Except, I think Arthur MacArthur was a Lieutenant at the time of the battle of Chattanooga. He also was awarded the Medal of Honor for taking the ridge.
-That is the original version, I dont recognize the version that gets played alot now......I live in Chattanooga, TN now, the basis of the song...LOL!! I went to Marquette, so We are Marquette! Still I love On Wisconsin.....
Wow, I didn't know our song was considered "the best". That's one more thing I can hold over the heads of other people who didn't grow up in Wisconsin! :D
Going to college now in Arizona, I totally miss the smells of the outdoors; the stiff and refreshing breeze of winter, the smell of wet grass after a rain; ahhh....

i thought there was contest and minnesota picked the rouser as the winner. on wisconsin (formerly on minnesota) was second, so then they gave it to wisconsin.
@bandgeek88 Both Wisconsin and Minnesota band sites claim that the song was submitted to the contest by W.T. Purdy and that Purdy's roommate Carl Beck, who attended UW from 1908 to 1909, heard the melody, wrote lyrics for his former college and persuaded Purdy to dump the Minnesota song contest.
Actually, I am from the East Coast, never been to WI. I just think On Wisconsin is the best fight song, musically. BTW- High school bands all over the country play it, they even played it in NC, where I grew up.
nezpercenathan, you've never been to Wisconsin ? oh you poor deprived sonofagun you, we've got rather good hunting & fishing here, if you like & even if you don't take any game or catch any fish, you at least get to see some TRULY 1st rate views of nature
My dad gets season tickets to every Badger home game. I have missed only two since he started getting them in 1998It gets so loud there, but not too loud. I am NOT a fairweather Badger football fan. I support them whether they're doing bad or good and not going to give up my passion.

W played this at HS football games in NC too back in the late 70s and early 80s. A classic motivation, rally fight song!

Minnesota never got the choice. The best song went to Wisconsin. Thx for posting this.

Thanks for sharing. My children play along with it everyday. It would have been much more difficult for them without this.

the best fight song ever. Even John philip Souza said it was.
heavymetalrulz123 3 years ago
It must be if he said it was. On top of that, my high school band used it as our fight song. It's so much fun to play on the trombone!

Well. Yes. This tune s used by more than 20 high school's their fight song. Often duplicated, but never copied.
