I think it's pretty simple. It is one of the 10 Commandments. Most Christians follow or at least try to follow the other 9, but disregard the 4th. T.D. Jakes did not finish the entire commandment. It is Exodus 8-11. I think it is pretty clear that God commands is not to work and to keep the seventh day holy.

The Sabbath was a Sign, a weekly ceremony commemorating Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage by the Creator. Christians are not delivered from Egyptian bondage! Christians are not under law to Moses; they are under law to Christ which, as He shows in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5) is of a higher standard and broader in scope that a mere ten laws.
There is not a single commandment to keep the Sabbath in the NT and nowhere do the Apostles command Gentiles to observe it. (Cf decision of Jerusalem Council) Nowhere does Paul detail exactly how the Gentiles are to observe it, which is rather amiss of him, dont you think, if the Sabbath commandment is obligatory, considering he was the Apostle to the Gentiles?

The Ten Commands are a mix of moral and ceremonial law given to Israel alone Christians are not led by law but by the Spirit thro the "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8)
Jakes, is a theatrical pastor, who knows how to get his congregation stirred up. It appears that the day of rest, he is referring to is the millennium, thousand year rest. Knowing the Bible and listening to his message he's talking about the millennium, not the sabbath. There will be no more tears, no more tribulations, no more sorrow. That's what we strive and wrestle for; everlasting life with our heavenly Father in peace. We don't strive/fight for the sabbath we keep it holy by doing so.

We don't base our religion around 1 particular day, we believe in upholding the law of God, and it happens that one of the commandments is focused on a particular day, the 7th day of the week. And it also happens to be the one commandment that Christianity has forgotten about, and it is an important commandment because it brings glory to God.

Just the same as we need to get ready for the second coming! We can't be sinning everyday and then when Christ comes, we say I am ready. The same with Sabbath! @preachaman256 So you would have preferred that they (people of 1844) lost their faith in Jesus and not looked in scripture to see where they error-ed? Even though the prophecy was sweet in the mouth but bitter in the stomach, they persevered. I have no problem with a church like that. Rev 3:10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

Because as a faithful and wise studier of the Word, we notice that God can do anything at anytime he chooses; however, he has certain DAYS, and seasons in which he does them. Also, we can never be 100% certain as to what Jesus' response would be on any topic. We then cross the line and put ourselves on the same thought level as him, as a god. We can say, "according to scriptures he has said..."

There are a few things that you need to study over again. Setting us free from the law means that He has saved us from sin because we broke it. Being under grace does not mean a transition of law. Romans 3:19 says to be under the law means your guilty. THIS is what Christ to save us from because we were in a state of sin. Because Christ died for us, we are under grace which is proven by the fact that we are alive today! He didn't save us from keeping the law my friend (Rom 3:31)

The Sabbath commandment said to do no work emphasizing the point that it is talking of labor because it will direct your mind off God. The work Jesus was doing was the work that is solely centered on God. The Jews had their own laws ADDED to the law of God which is why they said that He broke the Sabbath by helping someone. That is not breaking the Sabbath but to them it was. Thats why verse 18 conclude the accusation of the Jews:

How can he say that the day had no end to it (no actual time frame)? If you read Genesis for yourself, you will see where God, after doing His work on each day He looked over His work and saw that it was good. The bible then says "And the evening and the morning were the ______ day." Why would that principle not apply to the Sabbath? When would Satan have been able to tempt Eve, if they were spending that eternal Sabbath in God's presence?
That is an amazing apologetic! How could satan tempt Eve whilst in the presence of the Lord.
Also if you think about it, after they were tempted, God came to them in the COOL OF THE DAY. So it indicates a time of that day unless the cool of the day was eternally on the 7th day.

Hey i just did some study updates and I found out that the "OLD COVENANT" IS NOT AN INTERCHANGEABLE TERM WITH THE TERM "MOSES LAW".it was God's 10 commandments ITSELF, see Hebrews 8:6-7.Covenant also means testament therefore old & new testaments or old & new covenants. Pastor Jakes conflicts God's law with the Moses law.The eating of meats and drinks was the shadow alright, which was also against us (Deut. 31:26, Col 2:16) but never God's 10 commandments (4th law-sabbath). Moses law would eventruly be against us that's why Jesus blasted the Pharisees in His days on earth because they kept Moses law/ traditions of men rather than God's laws -Mark 7:8-9.
@brianhyde63 Christians are followers of Christ, to say that He was a Jew teaching Jewish law is dangerous. You are negating His teachings and you can take or leave whatever you like. I think it's pretty simple. It is one of the 10 Commandments. Most Christians follow or at least try to follow the other 9, but disregard the 4th. T.D. Jakes did not finish the entire commandment. It is Exodus 8-11. I think it is pretty clear that God commands is not to work and to keep the seventh day holy.

The Sabbath was a Sign, a weekly ceremony commemorating Israel's deliverance from Egyptian bondage by the Creator. Christians are not delivered from Egyptian bondage! Christians are not under law to Moses; they are under law to Christ which, as He shows in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5) is of a higher standard and broader in scope that a mere ten laws.

There is not a single commandment to keep the Sabbath in the NT and nowhere do the Apostles command Gentiles to observe it. (Cf decision of Jerusalem Council) Nowhere does Paul detail exactly how the Gentiles are to observe it, which is rather amiss of him, dont you think, if the Sabbath commandment is obligatory, considering he was the Apostle to the Gentiles?

Why? Those who place themselves under the Law are obliged to keep all the Law (600 plus laws) and not least the sacrificial laws INSEPARABLY connected with the Sabbath and to do so perfectly. Christ was a Jew under the Jewish Law and teaching people under the Jewish Law and that's why He kept the Sabbath! But time, place and circumstances must be taken into consideration. When He died (and especially when the “heavens and earth” eventually passed away as it did in AD 70) that system of Law came to an end. If you wish to maintain sabbath keeping then you are in serious trouble

Under the New Covenant He writes the law on our hearts as it was written on His heart Jeremiah 31; Psalm 39. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to us and by His Spirit imparted to us by grace through faith. The Ten Commands are a mix of moral and ceremonial law given to Israel alone Christians are not led by law but by the Spirit thro the "law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8)

Jakes, is a theatrical pastor, who knows how to get his congregation stirred up. It appears that the day of rest, he is referring to is the millennium, thousand year rest. Knowing the Bible and listening to his message he's talking about the millennium, not the sabbath. There will be no more tears, no more tribulations, no more sorrow. That's what we strive and wrestle for; everlasting life with our heavenly Father in peace. We don't strive/fight for the sabbath we keep it holy by doing so.

We don't base our religion around 1 particular day, we believe in upholding the law of God, and it happens that one of the commandments is focused on a particular day, the 7th day of the week. And it also happens to be the one commandment that Christianity has forgotten about, and it is an important commandment because it brings glory to God.

So when I think of Sabbath and keeping it Holy, I must place my mind, throughout the week, in a state of holiness in order to keep it Holy. Just the same as we need to get ready for the second coming! We can't be sinning everyday and then when Christ comes, we say I am ready. The same with Sabbath! I have to keep my mind focused on God so that I can easily ease into the Sabbath!
What you do on the Sabbath shows how your mind was in the week!

Friend it is pointless in keeping it in Human strength which is why Christ in you is the hope of Glory Col 1:27. This is where your faith comes in. Can Christ truly save you from sin? ALL sin? There are a few things that you need to study over again. Setting us free from the law means that He has saved us from sin because we broke it. Being under grace does not mean a transition of law. Romans 3:19 says to be under the law means your guilty. THIS is what Christ to save us from because we were in a state of sin. Because Christ died for us, we are under grace which is proven by the fact that we are alive today! He didn't save us from keeping the law my friend (Rom 3:31)

Seems like TD Jakes has NOT read the whole new testament. Hebrews Ch.4 clearly says that the SABBATH is to be kept holy. "For if Joshua (Jesus) had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. The Sabbath commandment said to do no work emphasizing the point that it is talking of labor because it will direct your mind off God. The work Jesus was doing was the work that is solely centered on God. The Jews had their own laws ADDED to the law of God which is why they said that He broke the Sabbath by helping someone. That is not breaking the Sabbath but to them it was. Thats why verse 18 conclude the accusation of the Jews:

The solar system cancels the theories of the seventh day or any other day for that matter, since the earth spins on axis causing day and night and the son does not rise or set but is ever shining since its creation. Where do you base your sabbath? God created the entire universe with its millions of galaxies, how can He therefore be confined to a minute space of time like the earth's solar system?

How can he say that the day had no end to it (no actual time frame)? If you read Genesis for yourself, you will see where God, after doing His work on each day He looked over His work and saw that it was good. The bible then says "And the evening and the morning were the ______ day." Why would that principle not apply to the Sabbath? When would Satan have been able to tempt Eve, if they were spending that eternal Sabbath in God's presence?

He uses few Bible verses to talk about rest, but he doesn't really refer to biblical texts to support his believe about sabbath.

From what I understand, T.D.'s son became a Seventh Day Adventist and he became so angered by this he came out with this foolishness. T.D., my brother, you lost major credibility as a preacher, a leader, and scholar by using texts out of their context to prove your flimsy predetermined and pre-opinionated ideas and now its on video. Leading many astray for this. You seem smitten that you are a know it all here, but it's really sad the many there led astray by a ravenous wolf in sheeps clothes

It's pretty sad to see over a thousand people being taught to disobey the bible and how people take the bible out of context I'm 21 and teach a bible study at my university and I see now why it's hard to explain the truth to those that have been lost...

I cant help but notice, how not once has he told his congregation to OPEN their bibles. Matthew 15:9 "But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandents of MEN!.. I'm happy that I go to a BIBLE based church. My faith is based on the WORD of God .. and not the philosophy of a man. But with that said.. lets keep our brothers and sisters in prayer.. Jesus is abt to burst through them clouds :)

this brother is such a false prophet, he twist the scripture and these people just swallow up what he says, they dont read the bible for themselves. look at this all the prophets, Jesus and all the disciples keep the sabbath and it will be kept throughout eternity. so who gave these people the right to twist God's word and preach heresy. read Ezekiel 22:25-29 and for the sabbath as an everlasting commandment read Isaiah 66: 22,23

@opec1984 man you need to unveil the beauty of God to understand the meaning of Gods true Love. Most of Yeshua's miracles were on the sabbath so therefore one must wonder why? why did he have to explain himself and defend himself to such hypocrites. what is the meaning behind his story accounting to David? He also claimed He is Lord even over the Sabbath! Does that mean he is Greater (then a Holy Day)?? Mediate on Matt 11:25-29 for he will GIVE and you will FIND!!!!!! Amen

Ok there has been alot of comments regarding this issue of Sabbath and people claiming that it is no longer needed.
There are alot of things we need to learn and alot of things we need to unlearn.
The Sabbath day identifies who the creator is and my prayer is that we all come to the same obedient spirit that Christ would help us with.
Sin is transgressing the law and this is shown through the Law of the 10 Commandments. Breaking Sabbath IS SIN.

Friends, truth is not truth because man or tradition says it is. Truth is truth because God says it is. PRotestants who keep Sunday are really following the Catholic Church and don't even know it. What they claim about that I agree. Protestants who use "the Lord's day, the calendar has been changed, the law is done away with" and all the other excuses, are just that. Excuses, they wont work with God.His law was written on stone. Because we are saved by grace through faith we keep Sabbath Holy.

@Jondadon2006, Sunday is a man made tradition by the Catholic Church. In 365 AD in the council of Laodicea they change was written and mandated. This was when there was no TD JAke, Osteen, Hank Hennagraph, Chuck Smith, Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, Lutherens, Baptists, etc. There was only the Catholic Church! They did this and admit they did it. Their biblical Catholic scholars clearly state there is no biblical evidence for the change! I'll Post some Catholic quotes...

Here is the source for that quote: The Faith Explained, Third Edition, by Leo J. Trese, 1965, Fides/Claretian, 14th printing, 2005. Again, at least Catholic scholars will not try to hide why they keep Sunday, but protestants: lutherans, baptists, pentecostals, mormins, calvary, vineyard, episcopalian, and on and on, all keep this with not scriptural authority, claiming its the "Lord's day" when it is NOT! Catholics scholars know there is no biblical foundation for it too!

I don't know what your point is for posting this but all I'd like to say the Catholic Church does not have any authority to change the Sabbath in fact no one does.The only person that can do that is God since He is the one that created it. There is no where in the Bible that says Sabbath was changed not 1 verse. The last answer doesn't even make sense,they admit Sabbath is Saturday but yet the Catholic Church changed it to Sunday,where did they get the authority to do that?

@tuts333,here is the source for that post, (The Augsburg Confession, edited by Philip Melanchthon (1530), Article 28: Of Ecclesiastical Power).You are correct in stating the Roman church has not authority to do so, but they claim they do.I post their words with the sources so everyone can see.This is not from Christ, but from man, and all other protestant "Christian" churches keep Sunday because of that. It originated with Roman Catholicism, after the reformation it remained, no sola-scriptura.

Once again folks, Jakes singles out the Jews claiming that the 24 hour period or sabbath day was for Jews who were awaiting their Messiah.But doesn't Isaiah 56:2,3,6,7 talk about the sabbath being for Jew and Gentile.Also Acts 18:4.Even Luke himself was a GENTILE who wrote the Gospels of Luke and Acts who stood for the Sabbath day (7th day)!Do your research people!

Mind if I ask you which you refer to as the Moses law? Is it just the ceremonial laws, or are you referring to the whole book of the law from Genesis right through to Deuteronomy?

Actually the Moses law is the ceremonial law aka the "hand writing of requirements" (Col 2:13 NKJV), the ordinances, commandments of men, doctrines of men,or old covenant. Now "old covenant" is interchangeable with God's 10 commandments which was first written in stone.Now the "new covenant is the same 10 commandments now written in our hearts and minds (Heb 8:6, Jer 31:31) thru Jesus at the cross.Ex. through Deut actually gives exact ref. to Moses & God's laws. Genesis details mainly b4 Moses.

The first five books aka the Torah are collectively known as the books of Moses.However, Genesis as i said b4 details the time mainly b4 Moses.Again, from Ex to Deut. details Moses's law to the children of Israel.Remember, much of the 1st part of Ex. talks about the children as slaves in Egypt well into their freedom.The rest of Exd. to Deut. details the law of Moses (& God's laws).Gen. doesn't really detail the law of Moses even though he wrote it . In fact he isn't even mentioned in that book.

Ceremonial laws are heavily mentioned in Leviticus mainly the 23rd chapter, where it talks about the great yearly feasts of the Lord.Deut. is basically a recap or commentary of the laws by Moses.Its like a review.But collectively specking, Ex to Deut. talks about the laws of Moses.Hope this wasn't confusing.Hit me up if you have any other questions.

P.S.-the term "Old covenant" is the term it self.Moses law as i said b4 is also considered as the old covenant that was done away for good, or forever.NOT the other "old covenant" aka God's 10 commandments which was written in stone at 1st, then transfer into the hearts and minds of the ppl thru Jesus via the Holy Spirit Heb 8:6.That's why you never hear of ppl. being moved by the Holy Spirit in the old testament.Thanks for asking!

Hey i just did some study updates and I found out that the "OLD COVENANT" IS NOT AN INTERCHANGEABLE TERM WITH THE TERM "MOSES LAW".it was God's 10 commandments ITSELF, see Hebrews 8:6-7.Covenant also means testament therefore old & new testaments or old & new covenants. I am terribly sorry, it was an honest mistake.The other terms i had list in the first reply are correct though. Hope this isnt confusing.If you have any other questions just hit me up.God bless!

Pastor Jakes conflicts God's law with the Moses law.The eating of meats and drinks was the shadow alright, which was also against us (Deut. 31:26, Col 2:16) but never God's 10 commandments (4th law-sabbath). Moses law would eventruly be against us that's why Jesus blasted the Pharisees in His days on earth because they kept Moses law/ traditions of men rather than God's laws -Mark 7:8-9.
