i am from xenia but was not birthed at "gang greene memorial hospital". These examples are just examples of true life experiences. although i did not hang out with these types of kids they were here, in xenia. Xenia has takin a downward spiral since the 74 tnado. xenia used to be a kick ass town back in the day! gummo is just symbolic of small town 'jerry springer' mentalities. there are plenty of jerry springer candidates here (as well as many places throughout the country).

Xenia Ohio is my hometown born at GMH i've lived on kinsey.rd, Orange.ST, Belbrook.AVE, and Omard.Dr whent to ST Brigid elementary, tecumseh elementary, Simon Kenton elementary, and COX Elementary schools in Xenia

Just got done watching it. This trailer made me want to see it so bad, and it didnt live up to my expectations. It wasn't terrible, but it wasnt amazing like I thought it would be.
I don't really understand why some people think Korine is a talentless hack. To me art is something deeply personal. You don't necessarily need to think of some grand message you are trying to portray, you should only be as honest as you can be and people will be able to interpret your work through their own filters. I think that is what Korine is so good at doing. There is a definite narrative in Gummo but it's different for every viewer I think. Like I said it's something extremely personal.
ah.. i remember that scene where the guy is feeling up his girlfriend in the car.. and he said "theres a lump in yo boobie". i thought that was so sad.
gummo is stunningly brilliant a masterpiece unlike anything else by far my favorite film of all time every frame is just right i'm sorry but anyone who doesn't see genius here is an idiot
this movie fucking owned everything you ever fucking thought about life will change after seeing it this movie fucking rocks yours and everyone else world when you see how real this is
hahaha, "ocean's 51 million"..... I totally agree with you - the film is way better after a joint, but still uneasy to watch at times. But that's kind of what i like about Larry Clark's work; it's so real that it's uncomfortable. Just saw Ken Park too - it's a classic. Because it's REAL.
I must say I love this film but ever time after I watch it I feel a little dirty. It has some very odd stuff in it but it is very entertaining at the same time. Just give it a chance and you may walk away from it loving it or just plain sickend by it.
i tried to watch this film when it came out but struggled. it was the gay black dwarf that fucked my head up and the mentally challenged prostitute (whos is actually mentally challenged) i am gonna give it another go this film has a lot to offer

Quite possibly one of the worst "movies" ever (in my opinion). Artsy? A desperate attempt, going horribly over the top and giving it a psuedo-artistic vibe. Painful to watch... Sorry to all the fans, just my opinion.
I appologize for my comment earlier about Kurosawa being awful, I saw my 5th film by him, Rashomon and it was incredible, I was surprised. Plus, I do agree with you about Gallo being great, Buffalo 66 is marvelous. I'm still not sure about how I feel about the Brown Bunny, it was uncomforting but it was so real and surprisingly pulled off well. But I still will stand my opinion and consider Korine a great director.
what did you find compelling about buffalo 66? i found gallo's character completely uninterestig and all i got from that film is how big gallo's ego is.
I thought this film was brilliant. It captures the good and bad of poor white people that doesn't get seen so often. The despair and corrosion of a town that has lost jobs. The decaying of the U.S. itself. This film is as honest as it is prophetic.
and oh, I'm not a Korn fan by the way. And I'm not even sure adolescent Korn fans would be enough curious to know what the hell is Gummo talking about :).
Before I saw his films I read his influences : Godard, Fellini, Cassavetes (obvious), Tarkovsky. His influences were mine, and that's the reason why I wanted so badly to see Gummo. As a fan of those directors, I'm pleased that finally someone has managed to do both something new and rather powerful where you can even feel the gods of cinema's spirits. (hope you understood this, sorry for my frenglish...)
Korine's a genius. People like him, people don't like him, we don't give a damn. I'm not talking about technical things, the way he films, or the story, but the feelings (ha, I'm sorry, I couldn't help it).
And I'm deeply happy to have seen Gummo or Buffalo, I won't tell you why, because it is linked to my personal experience and I don't want you to take my opinion as lofty, hilarious or whatever, I really don't want to bother you with that, but sincerely, would you please name some of your favourite american (indie) directors that you currently find exceptionnal except Wes Anderson, Gus Van Sant or... Larry Clark ? Or maybe Sean Penn (just saw Into the wild today).
Oh, come on, don't be so mean towards Korine's fans! we haven't done (yes, i'm part of them) anything wrong by telling this movie's excellent. I'm french and so spoilt by the previous french directors' heritage, and I love cinéma, I mean I really do, and Harmony Korine or Vincent Gallo are the only indie american directors we know here in France, or perhaps I'm very ignorant of what's new in arts.
whether it sucks or not, its made millions of fans...the soundtrack is awesome, he had a drunk conversation with a gay black midget, filmed two deaf people arguing for god sake..to me thats worth watching.
you make something that gains millions of fans, and causes controversy for no apparent reason, than you shouldnt judge or talk shit. Your one of those people who think your more educated, or cultured, go listen to npr you turd.
Yes--listening to his fans do crack me up. To earn the title of genius, Michelangelo had to paint the Sistine Chapel; Beethoven had to write his 5th symphony; Dostoyevsky had to write "Crime and Punishment;" Orson Welles had to direct "Citizen Kane;" Kurosawa had to direct "Ikiru."
What did Korine have to do to enter the pantheon of geniuses? Tape bacon to the wall. His fans truly are the biggest suckers!
Exactly! They seem to think liking this garbage makes them elite. His fans are so predictable--if a movie has no formal plot, structure, or point whatsoever, and is hated by more mainstream moviegoers, you can bet they'll call it a masterpiece. That someone thinks this kid is a greater genius than Kurosawa can only be explained as immature, pseudo-intellectual pretention.
LaDouche, finally, someone said it! Korine's work is utter garbage--the cinematic equivalent of pseudo-artist throwing paint onto a canvas and calling it art. And while I am a believer in the old saying that there's no accounting for taste, Harmony Korine's fans and defenders tend to be incredibly annoying, immature, pseudo-arty, pseudo-intellectual geeks.
Where's all the substance in that? Gummo had some life ((or lack of)) that made it a haunting hilarious masterpiece. Plus are you the same person that favorited something with Dave Chappelle, the lovely figure in the cc trashy eroding comedy world in it? Modern american comedy is disgraceful to anything caught by camera. I find more humour in the sadistic pleasure of watching Dr. Phil.
I understand your point but never compare Korine to Kurosawa, what absolute rubbish. Korine has so much more to show for that long-time directors, Kurosawa never wrote anything appealing except to little arthouse revival bastards that just want an old foreign film just because it's an old foreign film.
i think they did a fine job capturing how fucked up people are in this world. I personally love this movie. I love it because it's way out there. Not like many movies.
LaDouche, who ever said Gummo was a "deep" movie? It's different, unique, honest, and original, but just because you hated it doesn't mean those who like it are artfags or something, because that is not the case at all. It's just not your thing, accept that and move on. I'd like to know what types of movies you consider "deep" anyway. And if you think Gummo is pretentious, obviously you haven't seen any Godard, Tarr, Tarkovsky, Rohmer, or Bunuel films, sir.
Hell yeah, man. fuck originality! i'm like you douche, i'd rather watch remakes and sequels all day long instead of that shit that makes you think! oh yeah, and go bush!
i don't know i've seen weirder, recently i saw paprika, this anime film about these researchers who developed this device that allows people to view other's dreams, but it also allows dreams to be projected into other people hooked up to the devices. Some of them are stolen and this dream gets loose that is so fucked up that it drives people who have it insane.
on a side note, gummo is nowhere near a favorite (i've only seen it once and have no desire to see it again), but i think it's one of those films to just think about and interpret its meaning on your own. some people want a film's meaning to be laid out in front of them, i guess.
my favorite movie is amelie but i'm also a fan of elephant, breathless, thumbsucker, trainspotting, a clockwork orange, the shawshank redemption, requiem for a dream, fear and loathing in las vegas, rebel without a cause, breakfast at tiffany's and me you and everyone we know. i'll always love pulp fiction and fight club.
It's more about social inequalities, you cannot just look at the film at face value, you have to read into the storyline. It's not hard to understand the message if you pay attention and keep an open mind.
A town of decay, dropkick dead-ass inbred billy bob jebadiah jethro cledus.A great film about the south and its grim needle realities and how all of these people are left behind in life....Hillarious
i agree with zargoffkain OwnagePwnage123 sounds like a complete dipshit. yea ownage its a fuckin emo movie! you fuckin dolt! so tell me what u think off this once ur done jacking off a pig.
OwnagePwnage123 is most likely a product of in breading, cut them a break. There's no such thing as stupid comments...just stupid people who make them
it really is a beautiful movie, I'm sorry if most people don't understand it. Take a deeper look and you might get something out of it. Larry Clark and Harmony Korrine are 2 of the most brilliant directors the world has ever seen. I recomend all of their movies
Btw "Kids" is a movie worth watching also

the weirdest.

i don't know i've seen weirder, recently i saw paprika, this anime film about these researchers who developed this device that allows people to view other's dreams, but it also allows dreams to be projected into other people hooked up to the devices. Some of them are stolen and this dream gets loose that is so fucked up that it drives people who have it insane.

The people in this movie were below white trash. Great film though.

I love the abstract life of these trashy people, amazing movie but only if you have an open mind. Harmony Korine is brilliant.

You saw that trailer and thought that saying "it is really strange" wouldn't be too obvious to waste your time writing?

on a side note, gummo is nowhere near a favorite (i've only seen it once and have no desire to see it again), but i think it's one of those films to just think about and interpret its meaning on your own. some people want a film's meaning to be laid out in front of them, i guess.

my favorite movie is amelie but i'm also a fan of elephant, breathless, thumbsucker, trainspotting, a clockwork orange, the shawshank redemption, requiem for a dream, fear and loathing in las vegas, rebel without a cause, breakfast at tiffany's and me you and everyone we know. i'll always love pulp fiction and fight club.

i saw the first hour or so of this the last night
i was really wierded out but it was realy good

what is your favorite movie? what do you think makes movies "good"? i'm just curious.
weareskyscrapers 4 years ago
It's more about social inequalities, you cannot just look at the film at face value, you have to read into the storyline. It's not hard to understand the message if you pay attention and keep an open mind.

mattjm86 4 years ago
it really is a beautiful movie, I'm sorry if most people don't understand it. Take a deeper look and you might get something out of it. Larry Clark and Harmony Korrine are 2 of the most brilliant directors the world has ever seen. I recomend all of their movies
