@RaikenXion read the 1997 novel "The Return." It goes into depth about the machine planet that assimilated NASA's Voyager 6 probe to later become VGer. Also see the cinematic ending to 2006 game "Star Trek: Legacy." Both explain the (sometimes contradicting) origins.

@RaikenXion It is not. It is by no means considered canon in the Star Trek Continuity. The Borg in 1st Contact were trying to send a message to the borg back in the 2060's over 100 years before Kirk even encountered Vger.
