I like seeing this scene, but I think taking it out was a good call. Wouldn't have mixed very well with the rest of the opening. But that is just my opinion of course.
Does anyone know who decided to take this one out?
news of this scene hit the fan network very early, as the studio thought we'd all be anxious to see it. It got laughed out of the movie. In the end, it was fine, but no one had ever seen it and we just thought, "bill shatner sky diving? Only if he lands in a buffet."
I have the comic book, and in this scene, the Chekov part was clearly written for Spok, and the Scotty part was for McCoy. Unfortunately, Leonard Nimoy refused to work in this film, and Deforest Kelley had a very delicate health :(
In the Enterprise scenes, the parts starts the same, but when they fall in the nexus, they are inverted, with Scotty interpreting the Spok's part, and Chekov the McCoy's part.

Fascinating. ;-)
Didn't know that. Neat. Think they must have re-used that orbital skydive idea for the altquel Trek reboot too.
