L'obsessió de París des d'aleshores ha estat el d'uniformitzar uns territoris lingüíticament i cultural molt diversos: destruir totes les llengües que no són el que ells anomenen francés; si havia altres habitants a l'hexàgon que no parlaven francés, com els haurien d'anomenar, doncs? Amb un terme despectiu, envilidor, que, reforçant les polítiques de genocidi lingüístic, fes creure els parlants d'occità, basc, bretó, català, alemany, flamenc, etc, que el que parlaven era merda, amb perdó.
La dialectalització de l'occità té com a motiu principal la manca d'oportunitats que ha tingut aquesta llengua (que per cert, va ésser la primera de les llengües romàniques en desenvolupar una literatura important i decisiva en la història cultural d'Europa: és la llengua dels trobadors) en poder-se desenvolupar de manera normal, a partir de la invasió dels francesos del nord en la seua "croada" contra els càtars, i sobretot a partir de la revolució francesa i "el Terror".
Alhora, quan hom parla d'occità en general hom parla de tots els parlars de les anomenades llengües d'oc, fortament dialectalitzades (tot i que els lingüistes estan d'acord en la seua uniformitat peculiar bàsica front als altres dialectes constitutius del llatí més propers, català, aragonés i llengües d'oïl). Així que lingüísticament, amb tota la certesa, es pot dir que aquesta dona parla occità, qualsevol que siga la modalitat que fa servir.
"Patois" és una denominació despectiva, creada per a envilir verbalment una llengua que es pretén destruir; alhora fa sentir tot el pes del complex d'inferioritat als seus parlants, de manera que pensen que el seu parlar (i ells mateixos) són inferiors a la llengua imposada, en aquest cas el francés (llengua d'oïl de l'Île de France). Qui fa ús del terme patois no parla en termes lingüístics, sinó racistes. Els lingüístes i els que s'estimen els seus parlars i la seua cultura l'anomenen occità
Occitan would be in better shape if Occitania is reunited with Catalonia, Moldova should unite with Romania perhaps those two will happen in united europe, North Korea and South Korea should unite as well..
Amen to that. The Parisians have been imposing their brand of identity to all of France since the 18th century. It's time the Occitans, Bretons, Basques, and Catalans to stand up for theirs.

There are no state schools teaching the languages, nor is there any funding for their propagation. You have to look first at the current constitution, which states that France is an INDIVISIBLE republic, alluding to its language policy. Pardon my French, but I say tabarnacle!

You might find other figures saying that Spanish speaker amount to millions. That is, if you include Chabacano, a macropidgin of Spanish and native languages (Tagalog, Cebuano, etc).

The modern nation-state of France was essentially born out of the crucible that was the Crusade against Toulouse and Aquitaine--a dirty political power grab dressed up as a religious war against Cathars. In reality it was all about expanding the power of the king in Paris, but it did have the side effect of completely destroying the Cathars, too.

Sadly the accent is now totally different from what it used to be centuries ago and is, in fact, strongly "francesised". There are occitan enclaves in Italy and Catalunia, though, where the phonic rendering is more cleanly latin and less franck and so more similar to the original medieval "lengatge"
@sassisch1 Because that's what they're called. In France, the term "patois" is rather like the English term "regionalism." Breton is a patois, even though it's not closely related to French. Basque is a patois, even though it's not even Indo-European. Ça ne veut pas dire que c’est pas une langue.

The vid was taken in a hamlet in the municipalatie de st-Julien Chapteuil Haute Loire.
All the enhabitants of the region, including the lady herself call what she is speaking patois.
When asked about its origins she said it was Occitan.
