You have to look at what existed before they came around. Except for the kings, everyone else was piss poor. Taxation was incredibly severe and limitless. For the huge majority this was a life and death difference. The Brits created a system of regular rents, safe housing and respect for private property, established respectable coinage and trade (ironically something that Indians invented 7000 years ago!). This is why Indians who were not a thugs, sided with the Brits.

Its quite hyped. Indians were VERY divided to begin with, although not along religion. If the British were really interested in dividing people, there are far more ways they could have divided. Or better yet, never actually integrated them as they did before they divided them. Besides, incidents of religious strife before the Brits took over were particularly gruesome. Just look at the Sikh rulers of Punjab and the NWFP.

To a large degree.. yes. But it would be hard to say that Indians or Pakistanis are of a particular ethnicity. The region that constitutes Afghanistan and Pakistan today was the frontier for military invasion and migration to India from the Middle eastern, Central Asian and European regions. But before the partition in 1947 they considered themselves more or less, as the same ethnicity. There seems to have been strife over religion which was made worse by 1947.
