Well I still like their music but the fact that he said "if HE is who HE says he is..." made me mad. "If you deny ME I will deny you..." says the Lord
this was disappointing. and if you haven't been on medication for depression, you haven't had depression. sorry, but...clinical depression doesn't go away on its own.
Matt H should really be the spokes person, but it mighta been cuz he got a chance to think while Matt T just had to blurt out something. So Matt H was able to give it better focus. The interviewer guy was far more straight forward with his belief with who Jesus is, but I don't think either band member denied Jesus at all. "Judge not, lest ye be judged", I agree that their music is much less straight forward than when they were first starting out, but I don't see that it's been harmful in anyway.
ok if I asked you on the spot without it being fresh on your mind what you thought about Jesus, you would seriously have to have time to think about it to give the best description you could. sure they didnt say much but they don't have too, all you have to do is listen to their music and it's clear. For example, "Never Underestimate my Jesus".
I thought their descriptions were a little bit lacking too, at first. Then I thought about it and realized that their music speaks for itself. More than likely, as many have pointed out, they wanted to be able to reach out to all of their fans, not just the Christian ones, with what they said. Bring the listeners in first, then hit them with the Message in the music. And, if you have ever listened to the "Unknown" song in "Two Lefts," you know that Matt isn't the best conversationalist. Haha.
sigh. They had such a chance to speak the gospel (not preach. just speak.) sad. Cracked me up when MattT said "I like natural stuff..." natural like...pot? Natural like...vodka? Natural like...Jesus? Come on. I kept thinking of Adam Young of Owl City "who is Jesus to you?" He would have said "He's EVERYTHING. He's my Lord. He's my Savior. He's God..." I respect that. Not so much this....
I love it when Matt Hoopes sais that Jesus left us the choice: Yeah I believe it and No I don't. There's no such thing as a 'grey area between black and white' like Matt Thiessen put it =D
I think people might be reading into the Matt responses too much. Their songs speak for themselves and clearly demonstrate what they believe. They seemed to just be trying to answer the question in a way to relate to more people, and get them thinking.
I'm not christian or anything, but I am a fan of Relient K. I think its crazy that you christians are judging these guys on how they view their lords. As long as they believe in your god, why question their opinion of them? Not every follower will have a one track mind.
Everyone go look up C.S. Lewis's "Liar, Lunatic, Lord" argument. That's what I think Matt is referencing. He's saying that if Jesus is who He says He is, then it's everything. If not, He's either a liar or a lunatic. He's saying that there's no gray area. As a man who's seen Relient K live multiple times and met members of the band, I'd say that Matt isn't a very eloquent speaker. People need to stop judging and trust that the Lord knows Matt's heart.
To those people doubting whether Matt's a christian or not because of what his answer was; it's very normal for christians, when asked about their faith, to back away and try to avoid the question. It's our nature which makes us feel ashamed, or that we have to explain ourselves, or accommodate for the views of unbelievers. It doesn't mean he isn't a christian :)
It can be really hard to say everything that is really in your heart on camera when a question is thrown at you. He may not be as quick as Tebow with those answers, but I think he knows his Jesus
Why is it they sound like idiots and they dont know what they are saying when they are asked who jesus is to them....but they speak perfectly fine about depression, the concert...Jesus should come first!! Even if caught off guard, if Jesus is number one in their life...they will know what to say..hellooo he should be their best friend! ...and theres a diff between "not shoving it down someones throat" and simply not knowing Jesus personally. Compared to his music, it sounds like he fell away. :(
@20dia10 I think it's more that they were trying to make their statements about Jesus Relateable. It's hard to say the perfect thing on camera in an interview that only lasts a couple minutes. Like Matt Hoopes was trying to get at, it's hard to consolidate how they view and feel about Jesus.
@dafterlife I THINK he was using the word if as an example ya know? it sounded like he struggled with words at the beginning, but i think he sort of straightened it out at the end
what Matt said is a ligit desc on Jesus and don't bash on him the way the guy asked him just came out of no were and also you have understand theres alot of non-belivers that are fans of RK Matt might be trying to message about Jesus in a simple way for them. don't bash on RK for not giving you the responce you wan't!
@jimcoolfilms I relate to alot of these responses & i am also a christian without feeling the need to bash the guys. For those of us who are followers of god that's who we are.. From the time we get up in the morning to when we go to bed at night so i think their all just trying to say that if that's who you are then it's just silly to not say so. We live in a world that's now supporting the rights of people all over whether it's for color, race, or sexual preference. Why should christians hide.
@Galitzen724 I concur with that. But I feel like it might've caught them a little off guard. I think the second answer really made up for it though. Besides, just from the music, you know they have trust in the savior. (:
"I believe in him" is all they really would of had to say. When he hesitated it made me sad. I'm not saying he should have preached, but it kinda woulda been nice to hear one of my earliest influences say that they believe in Christ and what he did.
@Galitzen724 I totally agree. I must admit that hesitation had me thinking, Oh no..not you guys too. It's so hard to see bands stay & endure the race as they develop in their careers when they start to hold their tongues.. I mean, i was always under the impression that at least two of them were christian but idk. Like you said, it doesn't mean you have to preach a message but if you're a born again christian you shouldn't have to hide that for anyone.
@Galitzen724 I agree; I've been listening to them for about 7-8 years now and loved the message they gave about God in their earlier music. I was disappointed about the "answer" Thiessen gave, and even Hoopes'. Sometimes, trying to cast a wider net and keeping everyone "happy" about the image you want to portray really devastates what you really believe in. This video leaves a bad taste in my mouth... :(
@Galitzen724 yeah seriously. I had my doubts about them before, but this was all the proof I needed. I'm not judging or anything, but, "If you're ashamed of Me I will be ashamed of you..."
@Galitzen724 I completely agree. Relient K has always been one of my favorites and I've always been one to defend their faith, but this revealed a lot about how he is afraid to offend anyone. It's okay to pursue a more secular label to reach a broader audience but when you're asked a straight up question like that you can't shy away from that.
"Come All You Weary" by Thrice. 'Nuff said. Any Christian on here bashing RK for not force feeding faith down the throats of others are the reason why Christians like me stopped going to church. Heaven forbid they've hit a point in their lives where they can accept the fact that having a Christian label doesn't mean you're "holier than thou" and can judge the lives others lead.
@PoeticRasling I don't want to bash relient k, and I'm really not saying they should have preached.. Just by starting out in a christian label, and advertising that you believe in God, and through that influencing a lot of young people.. You need to take responsibility. They kinda were asked a question with an easy answer,"what do you think of Jesus?". And they decided to take a no stand, and give an answer with "ifs" in it. They influenced me a lot growing up and now they've disappointed me.
if you actually believe in Jesus you won't beat around the bush, you either do or don't and you can't just say "Well, he was a good guy." If you have christ in you he's gonna come out in everything you do. I love Relient k I just don't like how they portray thier faith, they seem to just "like" Jesus and they aren't "Living for him."
their music has religious tones but not being a believer doesn't take away from enjoying their music. they don't shove it down your throat. I enjoyed it as a full fledged christian and I still enjoy their music now that I don't consider myself one anymore.
@suddenlycomplete Jesus is not simply a friend, He's a savior and son of God who came into the world to die for our sins. Matt does not say anything close to that, that is disappointing; only listening to his oldest music would you see his transformation to leaving Jesus out of his songs. I agree with you that there are not enough words to describe Christ, but like you said, we can love Him with just the few words of praising his name in our actions, and in the case for Relient K, their songs.
ahhh! My boyfriend and I were in this video twice!! he stands out more though because he's tall and handsome. blue tank with yellow shades.
Relient K is God-fearing and amazing and are most certainly inspirational to Christians and non-Christians. PS. it's not up to us to judge the amount of faith that they have.
@yayvalerieyay that's the thing. they don't relate to us that faith as being the faith that Jesus calls us to have. The last inspirational song I heard from them, concerning or close to concerning to Christ is Who I am hates Who Ive Been. Even in that, they don't mention God's name, only their regret in mistakes. :(
@SurfinSkatinLovin Honestly? I hear Christian referances, morals and metaphors in nearly all their songs. Sure, they skipped up in Forget and Not Slow Down- but I tottally understand, and Matt did still make an attempt to connect some of their songs (such as Therapy) to God in some matter.
@Legonater I'm sorry. I guess I am just not hearing their messages clearly. I thought, though, that if we belong to a savior, and we put him before all, we would recognize our fame and music's popularity would be all because of His will and His assistance. Yeah, I guess Jesus can just be a friend. Matt Hoopes might have said some good stuff, but it makes a difference for both guys to praise God and call Him a Savior, Mediator, and Redemmer.
@SurfinSkatinLovin Like a few other people said, I believe Matt was speaking in terms all their fan base would understand. Sure Christ is our saviour, but he IS a friend as well.
@Legonater I'll only give you the Bible. 1 Cor 2:6-16 gathers that the world cant understand what we speak if we speak as Christians. But, James (ch 1) says that a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Based on what you have said, this band has made themselves comfortable to the world. Well, Rom 12:2 speaks about that. So does 1 John 2:15-17, and 1:5-6 in a deeper way. Jesus says not to conform in Matt 6:24 because of the result. James 4:4. hope this helps u.
@SurfinSkatinLovin um.... id have to say in order for God to be our savior, He must also be our friend... i mean i hear that all the time from more mature believers than myself... In order to grow in our relationship with Him He must be our best friend, with whom we share everything with
@ascitiesburn444 That's a great point! Jesus is our friend & savior, but the first step to knowing him & having a relationship with Him is putting him in yoru heart and recognizing that he saved us from our sins by dying and raising from the dead. Romans 10:9. He is our best friend, and we should be confident to tell Him everything. Check and see what Matt said. He didn't say best friend, he said friend with good advice. there's a difference. Hope this helps.
I think Matt's faith was shaken from the depression and he's still not 100% about it right now but he still like believes in God and stuff but I think he still needs some time to think about it. Also I think that he is a shy kind of guy and he expresses his feelings better in song. Therefore, what you must take into consideration is his latest work, which is what he has been feeling recently. That will tell you what he thinks :)
I'm an agnostic who doesn't submit to believing in anything unless it's absolutely certain, and I gotta say that not being adamantly sure about your faith is healthy. I can respect christians, but I will never understand how you can base your lives on something that uncertain without doubting. Doubting and questioning is healthy and it is exactly what has driven science and man kind forward for the last 1500 years.
@Eirikofs Doubting is healthy when you don't know something for sure--you are right. But when you start learning, you come to a point where doubting is unhealthy. I don't base my life on something uncertain. There is nothing more sure than my salvation in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the sure thing. Don't be afraid to question what you know, but only do so as an approach to discovery. To permanently remain in such a state is to ruin for yourself. Some things are true, and some are not. You must choose
ME PARECE MUY BUENO EL MENSAJE QUE BANDAS COMO LA SUYA DAN AL PUBLICO JOVEN Y MAS EN EL MUNDO EN QUE HOY EN DIA ESTAMOS. GRACIAS POR HABLAR DE DIOS Y ESPERO QUE SIGAN ADELANTE. SALUDOS
What Matt said also describes a really nice person, making it a bad description of Jesus. Christ is the infinite, all-surpassing, incarnate (human) member of the Trinity and is perfectly holy and completely beautiful. After taking our sins upon himself and bearing the fullness of God's wrath, he died, and three days later rose again. He offers a rest in this life and a hope for the next. THAT is the God I surrender to every day, not 'the coolest person to hang out with who gives advice'.
I respect matt you know why? He's an honest man and gave an honest answer. We believe what we believe. We cannot believe something that we don't believe in. Christians think everyone has to believe the same thing.I'm sure everyone would choose to believe in Jesus Christ if they could, why would any one want to spend eternity in hell? I will fallow God forever. I believe in the fruits of the spirit, things like patients, kindness. Christians seem to do at pushing people away then saving them.
i love this band and i love Matt's writing. his faith seems to still be there but it seems it was shaken. if you listen to the ENTIRE forget and not slow down album it is based off the incident of his faincee leaving him. still a remarkable album, but i still sense a shake in his faith.
I'm not a very good speaker. I stutter a lot.. And I don't exactly express myself through words. If I did that would be cool but I'm
Better at it through music and art. That's how I express my feelings and thoughts. And so does Matt. And he has expressed Jesus through his music. So cut the dude some slack. I imagine I would be pretty tounge tied if I knew I was speaking to thousands of people.. I guess only Matt knows what he was thinking when he said that.. And I agree also with a lot of other
Also, I believe anyone here can disagree with Relient K respectfully, and that one who does should not be accused of "dissing". There is a difference between disagreeing and ruthlessly slandering. Just as there is a difference between clearly articulating your Christian faith, and "judgmentally thumping people over the head with a Bible". Please, don't so recklessly generalize.
I love Relient K. All I can say is that my response would not have been Matt Theissens'. I agree, a musician with a wide variety of people in their fan base must be aware of non-Christian viewers and not present a view that would be hostile towards people of different faiths. However, many seem to equate a clear statement of Christian belief as automatically "beating someone over the head with a Bible insensitively". If Matt T. had been clear, why would there be so much disagreement over this?
With me on Matt T.'s answer I'm half and half. What he said was an honest answer, not a Sunday School answer which is probably what most of you would've said if you were Matt. On the other hand he should've said something more deeper....something that would've made non-Christians think.
You can literally see what he's thinking. "Oh man, I should've said something more than that!" He kind of looks like he kind of regretted his answer. The question was "What is your perception of Jesus?"
@PrettyTiaF That's a great insight. Most people become (or try to ) musicians to speak what they truly feel. And if it's hard to answer questions in an interview it must be easier to do so in song with a lot of thought put into lyrics. (like "Friday" XD)
Guys, I think thats just the way he talks (to all the upset christians out there). I mean his first answer to the depression was "i dont know." He may not know how to express his thoughts all the way--may be a little tounge-tied. He might even be shy for all I know. But listen to what he has to say in his music. That just might glue everything together. I heard the wonderful Jon Foreman say "I'm a better singer than I am a talker." some ppl aren't very good talkers (like me) so cut him slack.
people say Relient K denies it is a Christian Band...I think that they don't really think that it is a genre. They just express on what they feel about their relationship with God. They already made people more aware about the good of Christianity. And they never stopped since. Plus, people expected too much from Matt's answer bout Jesus because of what he is already known for.......His Songs!!!
his answer was perfect, it describes what Jesus is to peoplee and that he does see him as the Savior and that and though its hard he makes it through, his answer says yesi believe in that, but im not gunna diss on you if you dont, its not a one sided answer and keeps poeple neutral bc not all their fans are Christians. He just didnt want to offend anyone. his anwer were wise and greatly worded

When Matt Thiessen wrote "Getting into You" and the lyric "In a way words can't describe... I'm going to love you with my life." It is clear words will never be enough to describe what Christ has done for us - we don't even understand in our brains without words; BUT we do know that Christ has given us love for his creation, for humanity, and for Him. We can love him with words and even more, we can love Him with our lives.
"I think he, I mean if he IS who he SAYS he was then that like, I don't know that's everything, you know. That's like he would've been the coolest person to hang out with or talk to and probably, I mean obviously, gives really good advice on how to live your life and I'm sure if you know, we follow that we would find ourselves being happier than we are, umm, so yeah, I mean I, I would consider him a friend, you know." - Matt Theissen
Take all the divinity and miracles and supernatural and resurrection away from Jesus and I still believe he was and is the direct reflection of love. And if God is Love then he is a direct reflection of God. I say this as a gay man who has grown numb and cynical of christianity as it is known today.
isnt matt's response like, "i dont wanna say im right, i just want you to know.." and "there was a man who lived one day.."
so why is everyone so disappointed?
i think its better he answered this way. otherwise, he mightve seemed arrogant or almost pharisetic if he pushed Christ onto everyone else in warped tour..
(although hoopes' reply was also really cool. i love them both.)
Wow, this interview made me sad as well:( Thank goodness for Matt Hoopes and his saves on this interview, because in my perspective, Theissen was dropping the ball here on what a great opportunity he had to spread God's love, and in reality, he would still be in Ohio right now doing nothing if God hadn't given him the talent that he has...Hoopes was on the money, and you can also tell he's read at least a little of C.S. Lewis by his first answer haha! But, all we can do is pray for them!RKrocks
Guys, remember that Matt didn't know that this man also was a believer when he gave him his answer. If tried to explain it in a simple way, in order for non believers to get it too!
Depresses me to see one of my band idols have a such a simple view of Christ... he wrote all these songs, claiming to have a strong faith and relationship and understanding of Christ.... But Jesus way way more than just a cool dude or a guy that would be a great example of how we should live our lives. Jesus is/ was a savior that gave everything in order for us to receive the kingdom of heaven someday.... why is it so hard to say that? I love matt and matt.. i just hope they truly understand !!!
His answer wasn't bad, it was just awkward, he was trying to explain his personal relationship with Jesus and didn't really know how to get it out. I can understand that
I never comment on videos, but I have to say, in Matt's defense, the question was "what is your perception of Jesus' and, not for nothing, the "awkwardness" in Matt's answer probably has a lot to do with the hypostatic union being a MYSTERY of faith. It's not something you can easily put into words and that's why Matt is so amazing for what he does. I am currently getting my Master's degree in Theology and this kid is right up there in my book with great Christian theologians for his charisms
Matt isn't questioning his relationship with god. I mean, I believe in God, and in reality, we never really know if what we believe is right. He's saying if in fact we are right, then Jesus means everything.
he's not questioning his faith, he's doing it this way to urge nonbelievers to question what they believe. matt realizes a large partof relient k's audience aren't christians so he's trying to present christ in a way that nonchristians can better understand.
@dougmoerhoffman yes, that's about right. you have to meet people on their level for them to even come close to understanding what you're talking about.
I think that "what is your perception of Jesus" is a very hard question to be asked on the spot like that so people shouldnt give matt such a hard time. Its a huge question and a very difficult one to answer
Don't judge people. if you heard something that seems wrong to you and you want to say something about it, better keep them to your self and you could pray for them instead. (remember their song "Bite my tongue") We cant JUDGE. we never knew and we'll ever know Gods plans for them.
Sometimes we think of Christianity as a religion, however its a relationship with Jesus. If Matt considers Jesus a friend, than he has a relationship with him.
All of these comments make me realize how glad I am to not be a part of Christianity anymore. Matt T.'s answer was a very typical "Christian" answer that very clearly stated his faith without being over-the-top about it. You people are nuts. This guy is a genius songwriter who obviously has a very strong faith, and you're all sitting their judging him because why? He gave a sincere, respectful answer and not a crazy-super-religious one? Ugh. Assholes.
i think what he was trying to do was not overwhelm the non christian fan base because not everyone is going to listen to you if you just up and start talking about Jesus in their face so that's what i think he was trying to say i guess.
I'm not saying the members of reliant k aren't Christians, but right there Matt stumbled a little bit. Kinda disappointing he definitely could have been much more bold. We cant be lukewarm Christians, and that quote was very very lukewarm, leaning toward cold. He had a great opportunity to say who Jesus really is. Now im also not saying I know i would have been as bold as an apostle, but we are called to be bold. IMO
Why don't we as Christians try to stop focusing on what Matt is saying and doing right or wrong, and look at ourselves. I promise, if you look inward, you don't need to look outward. Funny how we can be so blind to our own shortcomings, yet we are so ready to persecute and put down others...
Matt T. knows that a lot of fans who aren't Christians are going to watch the video and he may just be wanting to get their attention and get them to look at the claims Christ made and as Matt H. said doing something about it. Also, this video could have been edited.
And then they talk about Jesus, and the answer fails epically. Sorry.
I know the answer is different for different people. But being in such an influential band, I just don't get why they won't just acknowledge Jesus. There are so many people who need him, and God's music has such an awesome affect on people's lives, whether you notice it or not. Singing about breakups is okay, but Worshiping Jesus Christ is something that can't compare...
HOLD ON EVERYBODY. Matt T never said he didn't believe Jesus was Savior or anything like that. I think that he wasnt sure if the guy interviewing him was a Christian or not so he didn't shove it down his throat. You can tell he was almost relieved when the interviewer said he believed Jesus was Savior. What he said is true. If Jesus isn't who he said he was then nothing matters. That doesn't mean Matt T doesn't believe Jesus was the Son of God. He was leaving it open ended for their secular fans
@relientofleeland41 , I agree, but I think that when he looked "relieved" when the interviewer said he is a Christian, it was probably more that he was ashamed that he had given such a wimpy answer in the presence of a believer. So really, although people are trying to justify him and stuff, at the end of the day, come on. Who cares who's interviewing you? They can be a satanist, and really, that's when you need to have the strongest answer you can. Lukewarm Christians make me sick.
@iheartchrissavage I do agree he could've (should've) answered it more clearly. I just wasn't ready to make a judgement that he has lost faith or doesn't believe in Jesus like some people.
I love Matty T, but my heart doesnt agree with his answers. Jesus is it. He's everything, the only reason I am breathing. Not just 'a cool dude to hang out with'...
Wow at everyone who is dissing Matt for his answer. Judging him for what he said in one interview? Saying you're ashamed of him? Throwing him under the bus for not giving the CORRECT Christian answer? Should he have spoken in tongues and prayed for the interviewer? O_o All the things he listed are true anyway: Jesus does give good advice to live life, He IS everything, He IS the coolest person to hang around with, and if we listened to Jesus we would find ourselves happier than we are.
Seems to me that most of the people denouncing him ARE Christians, which means you understand who Jesus is and why he came to die. However, to the unchurched, the hurting, the broken, those who have never known him on a personal level, he gave a very down to earth explanation. We use the terms "Saved", "Savior", "King" because that is who we know him to be, and we love him for it. But for the non-christian, to know him as a friend is much more personable. Check yourself.
Just because someone is in a band doesn't mean there super christians and there is answer from cs lewis and they turned it into a chance to minister to everyone watching
matt oh matt...... I AM SO DISSAPOINTED OF YOU... WHEN I HEARD YOUR RESPONSE I WAS LIKE DOWN AND BROKE MY HEART WHEN YOU SAY THOSE WORDS.... MY FAVE SONG OF RELIENT K IS "THOSE WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH" so what are you saying now?????? IS THAT ENOUGH???? STAND UP FOR JESUS MAN...... I DONT KNOW IF IM STILL GONNA LISTEN TO YOUR SONGS.... YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BAND, HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES MANY OF TEENS LISTEN TO THIS BAND........
@jgmarburger He answered that the best way he could on the spot. It looked like he was caught off guard with the question. I think he also just didn't want to throw religion in anybody's face, which is respectable. They don't suck. They're musicians, not talking heads. It's tough to answer difficult questions like that with a camera in your face.
@atlfan2319 I've been following these guys for the past 11 years. trust me when I say that I want nothing more than for these guys to be legit! Its just time to be honest about the situation, these guys have fallen far away from the band that sang "never underestimate my Jesus", or "Jesus I pray, take all my mistakes, throw them away", or I'm getting into you, You're essential to survive". 10 years ago, if they had 100 cameras in their face, they wouldve answered with truth. know what I'm sayin?
@jgmarburger His answer may not have been the best, but have you ever been put on the spot like that? It's not easy. Regardless, the factor of his salvation (or lack thereof) is between him and God. God can still use this band to shed light to others, regardless of what their specific beliefs are.
I think Matt answered the question in a way that supports the way god created us, he gave us a choice to follow him, if people that do not follow Christ see the interview it isn't pushing God in their face, it subtly reminds the viewer that the choice to follow is there
I wasn't disappointed with Matt's response about Jesus at all. He was making a basic apologetics argument, and Hoopes explained it better than Matt did. We can't just believe that Jesus was a good guy, because He claimed to be the Son of God. I think that's what Matt was saying but he couldn't get it across in only two or three sentences.
All of you are wrong for judging his answer anyway....unless you are God up un heaven watching this video you have no place to judge him. Read the bible.
@stupidboy32 If you're referring to the "Judge not lest ye be judged" passage then you might also want to read the verses directly after it that explain how you are supposed to judge someone. And you just judged a bunch of people when you told them they are wrong for judging. True, we cannot condemn people, but it is not only allowed but commanded for us to point each other in the right direction, which entails judging one another's actions on an ongoing basis.
Guys...I've followed the band for about 8 years and Matt T. has had some trouble with his depression resulting in sins. The guy had his music to help him. The lyrics say it all! Forget and not slow down was the album where he got over it and he is now on a ladder up from his sins. He hasn't changed.....
GET OVER IT. He's not gong to say 'Jesus is griggin awesoem' because that's wrong. the answer is that there is so mcuh discrepancy in the bible and religious teaching, that there is no way to know what is true until we die., and i agree 100% with him - I can live without God, becasue without jesus there is no afterlife anyway, and with him, then a god so loving would never send anyone to hell, so just get over it, and enjoy the tunes.
Have you listened to some of Relient K's songs? TeaPartier22 names a couple of the more Christian ones. Though I'm surprised "Deathbed" isn't in there, that's the most evangilistic song I've ever heard. It's clear through their music that they believe that Jesus Christ is alive and well. Matt was probably just having more trouble putting his beleifs into a unprepared comment than into premeditated writing like he normally does.
I also am a tad bit disappointed also... =/ Austin Carlile gave a better answer than an openly(at least lyrically) Christian band. However, he does seem bad with cameras.
@rickyraccoon3 ill give you my answer, its nothing fancy its just striaght up truth. Jesus is a good person, he is perfect and loving, hes God, he makes me better and i believe in him.
Nothing fancy, just straight truth, im sure thats what matt thiessen meant.
wow, those are some intense interview questions. didn't waste any time there.
and what was wrong with his response? did you want him to give the whole gospel message? he answered the question like he should have, especially without prompting. it was a weird question and he answered it.
Well I still like their music but the fact that he said "if HE is who HE says he is..." made me mad. "If you deny ME I will deny you..." says the Lord

Auquachick113 1 week ago
ok if I asked you on the spot without it being fresh on your mind what you thought about Jesus, you would seriously have to have time to think about it to give the best description you could. sure they didnt say much but they don't have too, all you have to do is listen to their music and it's clear.

20dia10 1 month ago 3
@20dia10 I think it's more that they were trying to make their statements about Jesus Relateable. It's hard to say the perfect thing on camera in an interview that only lasts a couple minutes. Like Matt Hoopes was trying to get at, it's hard to consolidate how they view and feel about Jesus.

@Galitzen724 I agree; I've been listening to them for about 7-8 years now and loved the message they gave about God in their earlier music. I was disappointed about the "answer" Thiessen gave, and even Hoopes'. @Galitzen724 I completely agree. Relient K has always been one of my favorites and I've always been one to defend their faith, but this revealed a lot about how he is afraid to offend anyone. It's okay to pursue a more secular label to reach a broader audience but when you're asked a straight up question like that you can't shy away from that.
thefallout25 2 days ago
"Come All You Weary" by Thrice. 'Nuff said. Any Christian on here bashing RK for not force feeding faith down the throats of others are the reason why Christians like me stopped going to church. Heaven forbid they've hit a point in their lives where they can accept the fact that having a Christian label doesn't mean you're "holier than thou" and can judge the lives others lead.
PoeticRasling 2 months ago
@PoeticRasling I don't want to bash relient k, and I'm really not saying they should have preached.. Just by starting out in a christian label, and advertising that you believe in God, and through that influencing a lot of young people.. You need to take responsibility. They kinda were asked a question with an easy answer,"what do you think of Jesus?". And they decided to take a no stand, and give an answer with "ifs" in it. They influenced me a lot growing up and now they've disappointed me.
Galitzen724 2 months ago 3

@suddenlycomplete Jesus is not simply a friend, He's a savior and son of God who came into the world to die for our sins. Matt does not say anything close to that, that is disappointing; only listening to his oldest music would you see his transformation to leaving Jesus out of his songs. I agree with you that there are not enough words to describe Christ, but like you said, we can love Him with just the few words of praising his name in our actions, and in the case for Relient K, their songs.
SurfinSkatinLovin 2 months ago

Relient K is God-fearing and amazing and are most certainly inspirational to Christians and non-Christians. PS. it's not up to us to judge the amount of faith that they have.
yayvalerieyay 2 months ago
@yayvalerieyay that's the thing. they don't relate to us that faith as being the faith that Jesus calls us to have. The last inspirational song I heard from them, concerning or close to concerning to Christ is Who I am hates Who Ive Been. Even in that, they don't mention God's name, only their regret in mistakes. :(
SurfinSkatinLovin 2 months ago
@SurfinSkatinLovin Honestly? I hear Christian referances, morals and metaphors in nearly all their songs. Sure, they skipped up in Forget and Not Slow Down- but I tottally understand, and Matt did still make an attempt to connect some of their songs (such as Therapy) to God in some matter.
Legonater 2 months ago
@Legonater I'm sorry. I guess I am just not hearing their messages clearly. I thought, though, that if we belong to a savior, and we put him before all, we would recognize our fame and music's popularity would be all because of His will and His assistance. Yeah, I guess Jesus can just be a friend. Matt Hoopes might have said some good stuff, but it makes a difference for both guys to praise God and call Him a Savior, Mediator, and Redemmer.
SurfinSkatinLovin 2 months ago
@SurfinSkatinLovin Like a few other people said, I believe Matt was speaking in terms all their fan base would understand. Sure Christ is our saviour, but he IS a friend as well.
Legonater 2 months ago

Eirikofs 3 months ago
@Eirikofs Doubting is healthy when you don't know something for sure--you are right. But when you start learning, you come to a point where doubting is unhealthy. I don't base my life on something uncertain. There is nothing more sure than my salvation in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the sure thing. Don't be afraid to question what you know, but only do so as an approach to discovery. To permanently remain in such a state is to ruin for yourself. Some things are true, and some are not. You must choose

Oldeboy25 3 months ago
I love Relient K. All I can say is that my response would not have been Matt Theissens'. I agree, a musician with a wide variety of people in their fan base must be aware of non-Christian viewers and not present a view that would be hostile towards people of different faiths. However, many seem to equate a clear statement of Christian belief as automatically "beating someone over the head with a Bible insensitively". If Matt T. had been clear, why would there be so much disagreement over this?
Oldeboy25 3 months ago
With me on Matt T.'s answer I'm half and half. What he said was an honest answer, not a Sunday School answer which is probably what most of you would've said if you were Matt. On the other hand he should've said something more deeper....something that would've made non-Christians think.
You can literally see what he's thinking. "Oh man, I should've said something more than that!" He kind of looks like he kind of regretted his answer. The question was "What is your perception of Jesus?"
gobacktothatplace 3 months ago

Ugh. Assholes.

@Skitzabeth I agree. XD I thought it sounded very sincere and thoughtful as it was...

i think what he was trying to do was not overwhelm the non christian fan base because not everyone is going to listen to you if you just up and start talking about Jesus in their face so that's what i think he was trying to say i guess.
MinatoUzumak1 4 months ago 3

I think he said he believes in God. He says, "...I condider Him a friend, you know?"
jesusfreak9597 4 months ago
I think his answer was fine, it's probly not easy doing an interview and answering on the spot, cut him some slack
TheSupersam14 4 months ago
And then they talk about Jesus, and the answer fails epically. Sorry.
I know the answer is different for different people. But being in such an influential band, I just don't get why they won't just acknowledge Jesus. There are so many people who need him, and God's music has such an awesome affect on people's lives, whether you notice it or not. Singing about breakups is okay, but Worshiping Jesus Christ is something that can't compare...

what Matt T. said is disappointing
SuperYamahaDrummer94 4 months ago 3
HOLD ON EVERYBODY. Matt T never said he didn't believe Jesus was Savior or anything like that. I think that he wasnt sure if the guy interviewing him was a Christian or not so he didn't shove it down his throat. You can tell he was almost relieved when the interviewer said he believed Jesus was Savior. What he said is true. If Jesus isn't who he said he was then nothing matters. That doesn't mean Matt T doesn't believe Jesus was the Son of God. He was leaving it open ended for their secular fans
relientofleeland41 4 months ago 3
@relientofleeland41 , I agree, but I think that when he looked "relieved" when the interviewer said he is a Christian, it was probably more that he was ashamed that he had given such a wimpy answer in the presence of a believer. So really, although people are trying to justify him and stuff, at the end of the day, come on. Who cares who's interviewing you? They can be a satanist, and really, that's when you need to have the strongest answer you can. Lukewarm Christians make me sick.
iheartchrissavage 4 months ago
@iheartchrissavage I do agree he could've (should've) answered it more clearly. I just wasn't ready to make a judgement that he has lost faith or doesn't believe in Jesus like some people.
relientofleeland41 4 months ago
I love Matty T, but my heart doesnt agree with his answers. Jesus is it. He's everything, the only reason I am breathing. Not just 'a cool dude to hang out with'...
mohawkgal27 4 months ago
Wow at everyone who is dissing Matt for his answer. Judging him for what he said in one interview? Saying you're ashamed of him? Throwing him under the bus for not giving the CORRECT Christian answer? Should he have spoken in tongues and prayed for the interviewer? O_o All the things he listed are true anyway: Jesus does give good advice to live life, He IS everything, He IS the coolest person to hang around with, and if we listened to Jesus we would find ourselves happier than we are.
okLaptop1 4 months ago 35
@okLaptop1 Is there not some middle ground between "speaking in tongues and praying for the interviewer", and being seemingly vague and open ended?
Oldeboy25 3 months ago
Seems to me that most of the people denouncing him ARE Christians, which means you understand who Jesus is and why he came to die. However, to the unchurched, the hurting, the broken, those who have never known him on a personal level, he gave a very down to earth explanation. We use the terms "Saved", "Savior", "King" because that is who we know him to be, and we love him for it. But for the non-christian, to know him as a friend is much more personable. Check yourself.

YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BAND, HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES MANY OF TEENS LISTEN TO THIS BAND........

you guys suck. seriously. stand up for Jesus.
jgmarburger 5 months ago
@jgmarburger He answered that the best way he could on the spot. It looked like he was caught off guard with the question. I think he also just didn't want to throw religion in anybody's face, which is respectable. They don't suck. They're musicians, not talking heads. It's tough to answer difficult questions like that with a camera in your face.
atlfan2319 5 months ago
@atlfan2319 I've been following these guys for the past 11 years. trust me when I say that I want nothing more than for these guys to be legit! Its just time to be honest about the situation, these guys have fallen far away from the band that sang "never underestimate my Jesus", or "Jesus I pray, take all my mistakes, throw them away", or I'm getting into you, You're essential to survive". 10 years ago, if they had 100 cameras in their face, they wouldve answered with truth. know what I'm sayin?
jgmarburger 5 months ago
@jgmarburger His answer may not have been the best, but have you ever been put on the spot like that? It's not easy. Regardless, the factor of his salvation (or lack thereof) is between him and God. God can still use this band to shed light to others, regardless of what their specific beliefs are.
icephoenix9021 4 months ago
I think Matt answered the question in a way that supports the way god created us, he gave us a choice to follow him, if people that do not follow Christ see the interview it isn't pushing God in their face, it subtly reminds the viewer that the choice to follow is there
Z3r0NeM 5 months ago
I wasn't disappointed with Matt's response about Jesus at all. He was making a basic apologetics argument, and Hoopes explained it better than Matt did. We can't just believe that Jesus was a good guy, because He claimed to be the Son of God. I think that's what Matt was saying but he couldn't get it across in only two or three sentences.

All of you are wrong for judging his answer anyway....unless you are God up un heaven watching this video you have no place to judge him. Read the bible.
stupidboy32 5 months ago
@stupidboy32 If you're referring to the "Judge not lest ye be judged" passage then you might also want to read the verses directly after it that explain how you are supposed to judge someone. And you just judged a bunch of people when you told them they are wrong for judging. True, we cannot condemn people, but it is not only allowed but commanded for us to point each other in the right direction, which entails judging one another's actions on an ongoing basis.

All their music has subliminal messages based on their faith. Listen to the words!
stupidboy32 5 months ago
Guys...I've followed the band for about 8 years and Matt T. has had some trouble with his depression resulting in sins. The guy had his music to help him. The lyrics say it all! Forget and not slow down was the album where he got over it and he is now on a ladder up from his sins. He hasn't changed.....
stupidboy32 5 months ago
I don't see anything wrong with his answer. God is our friend and obviously a lot more, but that was his SIMPLE answer to the question.
gibsondude07 5 months ago
I don't exactly think those questions were appropriate, so it's understandable that they were stumbling on their answers.
shakeitoff95 5 months ago
GET OVER IT. He's not gong to say 'Jesus is griggin awesoem' because that's wrong. the answer is that there is so mcuh discrepancy in the bible and religious teaching, that there is no way to know what is true until we die., and i agree 100% with him - I can live without God, becasue without jesus there is no afterlife anyway, and with him, then a god so loving would never send anyone to hell, so just get over it, and enjoy the tunes.
itypesmiling 5 months ago
@itypesmiling
FlagPoleJumper 5 months ago
